BATTERY BACKUP This simple project makes a nice companion to power units in case of power outages, especially caused by severe weather. At the height of a storm, power ceased and my “Atmospheric Disturbance Monitor” went dark. This created a need for a backup supply. It takes planning to use a battery backup. Simply plugging into this power source is not enough. It supplies 12 volts DC, not house current. My “Sferics Detector” on this site shows the need for using a DPDT power switch. One side controls the line power and the other side, battery power. Note the design of the power supply. The power LED wasadded after completion ofunit. I had faulty breakersand needed an indicatorto show it was working.The LED is connected tothe switched output.

If I didn’t reveal mysecret, you wouldn’t knowthat the large washercovers a square hole fromthe original breaker.
The battery is from ourelectric-start .Water eroded theelectrical connections so Iremoved the battery andfound a use for it.

COULD NOT BE USED SOTHE FOOT IS ATTACHED
WITH CONTACT ADHESIVE! Take note of theprotruding screws forattaching the feet. Thesemay need to be taken intoaccount when arrangingobjects in the project box.
It’s not just for backup.I plan to use this unit topower other projects.

You may want to change the way the LED indicates power or eliminateit. This design has the LED on whether power to the battery charger ison or off (I have several of my projects switched off at night). The store-bought battery charger has two LEDs which indicate battery state.
MAINPOWERSWITCH
Automatic charger isdesigned for sealed lead-acidbatteries. It keeps the batterysafely topped off.
