Compound nouns �  What are the three types of compound nouns? Give

an example of each one. �  One word (e.g. chalkboard)

�  Separate words (e.g. school bus) �  Hyphenated words (e.g. fire-fly)

Time-order signals �  Can be words or phrases

�  Important to show order in narrative paragraphs

�  Should be followed by a comma (except soon, now, and then)

Purpose �  What are the three main purposes for writing? Think

of an example of each. �  Inform (e.g. Wikipedia entry)

�  Persuade (e.g. Political essay) �  Entertain (e.g. Novel)

Simple sentences �  Simple sentences are sentences with a single

subject and a single verb: �  My grandpa ran to the bus.

�  OR they are sentences with a single group of subjects and a single group of verbs: �  My grandpa and my grandma ran to the bus and caught it

just in time. �  These are called compound subjects and compound verbs.

�  What is a sentence fragment?

Compound sentences �  Compound sentences have two clauses, each of

which has a subject (group) and a verb (group). �  My grandpa ran to the bus, and I stayed with my mom.

�  My grandpa and grandma ran to the bus and caught it just in time, and my mom and I stayed on the corner and waited for my dad.

Compound sentences, cont. �  My grandpa ran to the bus, and I stayed with my mom.

�  How are the clauses in a compound sentence joined? �  a comma

�  a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) �  For

Coordinating conjunctions �  In this chapter, we’re focusing on the four most

common coordinating conjunctions: �  And

�  Write an example compound sentence for each one.

A note about coordinating conjunctions

�  Sentences should never begin with coordinating conjunctions: �  *I moved to Syracuse last year. But I have lived in the

United States for three years already.

�  The second sentence is considered a fragment.

�  How can we correct this?

Punctuation �  There are three main rules for commas related to

our grammar in this chapter: 1.  Use commas after time-order signals at the

beginning of sentences (except soon, then, and now). 2.  Use a comma before the coordinating conjunction in

a compound sentence.

3.  Put a comma between the items in a series of three or more items.
