Foreign Language teacher Anne deLeon

Art Teacher Hannah Pasquale

BY SCOTT E. KINNEY

EDITOR, 16 VOICESNEWFIELDS | One teaches the art of

language, the other the language of art. Both are part-time and both are new to

Newfields Elementary School. Theschool is pleased to announce the arrivalof foreign language teacher AnnedeLeon and art teacher HannahPasquale.

On Mondays and Fridays throughoutthe year the school will be receiving vis-its from deLeon, who will be teachingSpanish to all grade levels. DeLeon willbe teaching fourth and fifth gradersthrough January and at the end of thatmonth it’s the first through third grad-

er’s turn. She brings several years of teaching

experience in both Connecticut and atSpaulding High School in Rochester.

DeLeon said she is looking forward toteaching elementary-aged children.

“I really prefer this grade level,” shesaid. “The teaching is more like the kidslearning their first language.”

DeLeon said her 45-minute classes willcontain several songs and games.

“The littler kids need more kinestheticstuff, more games,” she said. “Thisshould be fun.”

Pasquale will be making twice-weeklyvisits to the school on Tuesdays andThursdays to lead the children through

New staff at Newfields

the art world. Pasquale replaces formerart teacher Deb Wheeler-Bean, who isnow teaching at the Lincoln Street Schoolin Exeter.

“I get to teach the whole age range,”said Pasquale, who will also be teachingat the Great Bay eLearning CharterSchool on Fridays.

The art teacher comes to Newfields Ele-mentary after a brief career in massagetherapy. Pasquale said the change is awelcome one.

“I loved working with my hands,” shesaid, “but I didn’t have much interactionwith people.”

Pasquale holds a MAT (Masters of Artin Teaching) from the University of NewHampshire. She favors longer lessonsthat get the students more involved in

each project and there will be few, if anycrafts, in her classroom.

“In the school setting, even at the ele-mentary level, it should be fine arts-based,” said Pasquale. “Having longerlessons makes the kids get moreinvolved in what they’re doing. It givesthem the opportunity to really look atsomething and put effort into it. It helpsthem take pride in their work.”

Newfields Elementary School PrincipalDennis Dobe said it is always a thrill tobring in new educators.

“It’s a great opportunity to bring newpeople from different schools and withdifferent experiences into our schoolcommunity,” said Dobe. “Bringing newstaff to the school makes it a richer, betterplace for the students and staff alike.”
