Race reports/Upcoming race information

Race Report: Jackie Mekler 25 km (12 May 2018)

Separate start for walkers? No. This meant I never had an idea as to who my competitors were, and it was only when I finished that I heard that I was not under the top 3. (0/5)

Separate start for 10/25? No. I saw at least 4 walkers ahead of me at the start or that came past me during the early parts of the race (not knowing whether they were doing 10 or 25km), but there were more walkers that had finished ahead of me, yet whom I never saw at the start or on the route. I still have no idea what my final position was. (0/5)

Prize money for walkers: First three, but no age category prizes. Normally I would only give a mark of 3 under these conditions, but since the prize money was so good (R1,500; R1,000; R500 for the first 3, I am giving a bonus point – even though I did not win anything) (4/5)

Separate results for walkers: No. I find this very disappointing for one of the strongest walking clubs in the province to present a race and then fail to have separate results. This is really unaccept-able. (0/5)

Start: There was absolute chaos at the entries, especially with online and pre-entries. My under-standing of online entries is that it is supposed to ease the pressure on the day, not increase it, so clearly something was very wrong here. They also ran out of numbers and several athletes, myself included, got entry tickets in plastic sachets (I have no problem with it, but several athletes ques-tioned whether I had entered as I did not have a big, visible race number). All of this chaos trans-lated into a late start. This is not acceptable. The start filled from the back and was in a relatively wide road, but I think if I were a bit later, it would have been a problem, as there were clearly many more athletes than anticipated. Very good, except for the late start (3/5)

Route: Other than a few hills especially on the extra loop for the 25 km, this was a really nice route for a walker. Some uphill’s, some nice and long downhills, most of the time more than enough space for athletes and traffic. None of the hills were so steep that a walker had to lose form or rhythm. A very good walking route. Around 150 or so metres of grass at the end, but at least, for once, this was even grass and not uneven as we’ve experienced in several other races, so this did not bother me. Excellent (5/5)

Page 4: This n That - Agape 05-21.doc · Web viewComrades Church Service General Clothing available: Buffs @ R100 Ladies skirts @ R200 Second skins @ R220 Age tags @ R30 Please contact Marietjie

Marshalling: Marshalls at most intersections, with good direction of athletes and traffic. Excellent (5/5)

Water points: The water points were generally quite good, with helpers serving on both sides of the road and with enough helpers’ present. Also, more than the standard Coke and water – there were bananas and other goodies too. However, other than one water point (around 5/20 km), not much spirit at the water points, which cost them half a point. Very good (4.5/5) Access and parking: More than adequate secure parking, both in the car park and in the street. Very good (4/5)

Personal experience: It is clear that the season has started to turn, and it was quite cool, albeit not cold. I wore a T-shirt under my vest, but no gloves. It would have been better not to wear the T-shirt, as it caused some discomfort during the race. I received a lot of support from runners along the route and was very happy with them complementing my style (at least that tells me I am not do-ing too badly!). With just 11 days since a full 42.2 km, my legs started protesting around 15 km, and I slowed noticeably over the last 10 km, but was still happy with my time. Without the Wally in my legs, though, I am sure I’d have been able to cut several minutes on the day. Nonetheless, the Wally was more important, so I’m happy. Very good (4/5)

General comment: I caught up with JJ Appel, who was doing the 10 km, after about 1.5 km and we walked together until around 4 km, before I told him to go as the pace he set was too hot for me for the 25 km. At around 3 km, an athlete from Run/Walk for Life Central Gauteng tried to pass us, with a “W” indicating him to be a walker. However, he did not lock his knees on a single step and was lift-ing on every single step as well, which means he was blatantly running. When we challenged him on his style, he became quite aggressive and was rather rude, but eventually he did fall back. He then ended up finishing in third position in the 10 km. Jaap Willemse who finished fourth then lodged an appeal against this “walker”, but the referees were not interested in the appeal, as there were no judges along the route. This is a very serious shortcoming in AGN races. However, after a number of athletes supported the appeal, the judges eventually awarded the third prize to Jaap. Although in this race sense prevailed, the same athlete has “stolen” prize money from real walkers in several races this year, including Denel in which I also saw him blatantly running. This really leaves a very bad taste in the mouth and confirms why separate starts (or completely separate races) are re-quired for walkers, preferably with judges. This will allow other athletes and judges to very quickly “sort out” such blatant disregard for the rules of the sport. It is one thing not to have a perfect style and sometimes not fully lock a knee or lose contact with the ground (and I will be the first to ac-knowledge that I still have to work a lot on my style), but blatant running simply does not belong in the sport.I also saw quite a number of other Agapé runners on the race and at around 15 km there were 5 or 6 of us within perhaps a 100 metres from each other. It is nice to interact with the others from the club while on the race.Total: 29.5/50 (59%)

Nine Surprising Ways Running Helps Your BodyYou know running is healthy, but do you know all the good it does?

GROWS CARTILAGEIgnore the naysayers—running isn't necessarily bad for your knees. Research from Australia's Monash University suggests that the impact of running can increase cartilage production, which can safeguard your joints from arthritis.

SHARPENS HEARINGResearch from Bellarmine University found that very fit women were six percent more likely to have better hearing than less-fit women. Exercise improves circulation to the ear, which provides a greater supply of nutrients to help preserve hearing.

SAVES YOUR SKINRutgers researchers found that mice who drank caffeinated water and then ran had fewer skin-cancer tumors than rodents who either just got caffeine or just ran. The caffeine-exercise combo caused fewer damaged cells to develop.

BEATS MIGRAINESPut down the painkillers. A study conducted at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden found that migraine sufferers experiences fewer head pounders when they worked out for 40 minutes three times a week over three months.

REGENERATES MUSCLEMuscles mass declines over time—or does it? University of Illinois researchers found that exercise triggers a type of stem cell (mesenchymal stem cells) to spur other cells to generate new muscle. That process could prevent age-related muscle loss.

EASES ANXIETYFeeling panicky about an upcoming work presentation? Go for a run. Researchers from Southern Methodist University near Dallas found that people had significantly milder reactions to stress if they engaged in regular intense aerobic exercise.

PREVENTS CANCERFinnish researchers studied 2,560 middle-aged men over 17 years and found that the most active men were the least likely to die from cancer, especially in the gastrointestinal tract or lungs. The more intense the exercise, the better.

INCREASES BRAINPOWERTo see how exercise stacks up against other mental stimulants, University of Illinois researchers exposed mice to three types of brain boosters—savory foods, new toys, and exercise wheels. The wheel was the only tool that improved cognitive function.

STRENGTHENS BONESWeight-bearing exercise increases bone density, which guards against fractures and osteoporosis, according to researchers from the University of Missouri. High-impact exercise, like running, appears to offer the greatest protective benefit.

Your thought for the week

necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Don't count the years - count the memoriesYour smile for the week

Hello! Gordon's pizza?- No sir it's Google's pizza.

- So it's a wrong number? Sorry- No sir, Google bought it.

- OK. Take my order please- Well sir, you want the usual?

- The usual? You know me?- According to our caller ID data sheet, in the last 12 times, you ordered pizza with cheeses, sausage, thick crust.

- OK! This is it ...- May I suggest to you this time ricotta, arugula with dry tomato.?

- What? I hate vegetables.- Your cholesterol is not good, sir.

- How do you know?- We crossed the number of your fixed line with your name, through the subscribers’ guide. We have the result of your blood tests for the last 7 years.

- Okay, but I do not want this pizza! I already take medicine ...- Excuse me, but you have not taken the medicine regularly, from our commercial database, 4 months ago, you only purchased a box with 30 cholesterol tablets at Drugsale Network.

- I bought more from another drugstore.- It's not showing on your credit card statement

- I paid in cash- But you did not withdraw that much cash according to your bank statement

- I have other sources of cash- This is not showing as per you last Tax form unless you bought them from undeclared income source.

-WHAT THE HELL?- I'm sorry, sir, we use such information only with the intention of helping you.

- Enough! I'm sick of google, facebook, twitter, WhatsApp. I'm going to an Island without internet, cable TV, where there is no cell phone line and no one to watch me or spy on me

- I understand sir but you need to renew your passport first as it has expired 5 weeks ago

Something to ponder over / something spiritualIt Takes Patience and Persistence to Reach a Goal "These things I plan won't happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will sure come to pass. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day! " Habakkuk 2:3 (LB)

The seventh step to getting where God wants you to be is to be patient and persistent. Why? Because it's not going to happen overnight. The more important your goal is, the longer it's going to take; the more significant it is, the more discipline it's going to require.

Step #1 - Determine your present position

7

Page 8: This n That - Agape 05-21.doc · Web viewComrades Church Service General Clothing available: Buffs @ R100 Ladies skirts @ R200 Second skins @ R220 Age tags @ R30 Please contact Marietjie

Step #2 - Be specific about what you wantStep #3 - Look for God's promiseStep #4 -- Ask God to help you Step #5 -- Identify the barriersStep #6 -- Create a step-by-step planStep # 7 -- Be patient and persistent

Nothing great is ever accomplished without persistence and patience because, in order to be success-ful, your dreams must translate into work. The people who succeed in life are the people who are will-ing to do what they don't feel like doing. They are not mastered by their moods, they are mastered by the Master, and they establish their goals and plans according to God's will.

Eliezer was a great example of patience and persistence. We saw his patience in choosing the right woman by making a detailed plan. He didn't make a snap judgment. He wasn't impulsive. The Bible says in Genesis 24:21 (NIV), "Without saying a word, [he] watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey succeed."

Later, after he got invited to Rebekah's house for dinner, the Bible says, "The food was set before him (Eliezer), but he said, 'I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say'" (Genesis 24:33 NIV). Now personally, I would have eaten first. But this guy was focused.

What's the point? If you are going to really reach your goals in life, sometimes you have to delay grati-fication. You have to do the tough thing instead of the fun thing, the right thing instead of the pleasur-able thing.

And the reason that's so hard is because most of us don't want to delay gratification. That's why we're in debt. Our attitude is, "I want it and I want it now." And if we can't afford it, then we put it on our credit cards.

It's important for you to learn this lesson because any goal that's worth achieving is going to have obstacles in the way. You need to have a long-term view so, when difficulties come, you can persevere knowing that you are going to get past it.

I love today's verse. It's a great reminder that God's timing is perfect and ours is not. When you find yourself in God's waiting room, just be patient and persistent. A God-given vision will always be ful-filled.
