For some odd reason, I read the Eyethu as 'Eye thru' and thus immediately lost the plot. At the time, I did not realise that this was not some 'Eye testing' facility which had sponsored the race. The penny only dropped when Dean McCleland (RAC) mentioned that it was the Eyethu (Ieh-yeh-too) race on Saturday.

EYETHU is a Nguni word meaning ‘ours’. It is also an affirmation of togetherness, of shared ownership or partnership.

The Start around 06:20, it was still quite dark, as it was heavily overcast (The photographer: Peter Darroll from RAC).

The 21.1 km (half marathon) and 10 km distances were set off at 06:30 in Freesia Street, South side of the mall. Temperature 9 degrees Celsius, although the slight breeze did add to the chill factor (in my opinion). Heavy cloud cover, with the promise of precipitation, although none was felt during the race. So, the weather conditions were quite apt for running, once one was sufficiently warmed up. The 5 kay Fun Run was to start 06:45.

The race commenced facing Westward, took a right into Jacobson Drive, then a sharp left, a lovely downhill to Mayflower Street, next turn right, a climb up Daffodil Street where Jacobson Drive was re-joined. Hmmm, with many twists, ups and downs, one eventually curves past Total Murrayfield Motors in Rossouw Street. Yes, you have guessed correctly. The way back to the Finish line in front of Run-A-Way Sports (East of the Start) is up the wandering steep incline of Rubida Street. The route (my perception) was the same as the 11 kay we have done before, so I gather it was rather further than the expected 10 kay distance.

Thank you for a lovely organized race. I see there were 'Builder's Warehouse' goody bags for the half-marathon participants, which one apparently missed out on if one only did the 10 kays (although I noticed hundreds of yellow bags piled up under a gazebo afterwards).

Thank you, Run-A-Way Sports, for sponsoring the Lucky Draw prizes, plus making a 20% discount available on race day for participants presenting their race number. Yes, it is necessary to read the race flyer to take cognizance of these type of windfalls (mere meters away from the finish lanes). :-( and :-)

Agapé greetings.

What Does a Lump on My Lower Leg After Running Mean? Running is a good way to work out the cardiovascular system and the muscles of the leg, but it is also very hard on your joints and bones. Each time your foot strikes the ground while walking, it puts pressure equivalent to 1.5 times your body weight on your legs. Running increases this pressure sig-nificantly. Over time, that can cause damage to the bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments, espe-cially if you have ill-fitting footwear or weak joints.

Some lumps on your lower leg after exercise can be treated with self-care measures, but there is a risk the lump could be cancerous. Consult your doctor for a diagnosis.

Shin Splint LumpMedial tibial stress syndrome, more commonly known as a shin splint, is characterized by pain on the tibia — the bone on the inner part of the lower leg below the knee. Lumps caused by shin splints are felt along the inside of the tibia, and there may be associated swelling of the leg.

The pain from shin splints often goes away once you start to run but returns when you finish run-ning. Shin splints occur most frequently in runners that run on an uphill or downhill grade and those that stop and start a lot or wear ill-fitting or worn-out shoes.

Muscle Hernia in Lower LegMuscle hernias in the lower leg are caused by a weakness of the fascia — the tissue that forms a sheath around the muscles and nerves. If the fascia is weak or defective, the muscles of the leg push through, forming a lump.

The lump is not always painful, but it can be if the pressure exerted on the hernia is made worse by exercise. Lumps formed by muscle hernias usually occur on the outside of the lower leg.

Other Causes of Shin Lumps

A lump on the lower leg after exercise can develop for a variety of other reasons and running may simply make them more noticeable or exacerbate the lumps. Trauma to the leg can cause swelling or a bump, as can an infection.

Inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus can produce lumps, particularly around the knee. There is also the chance it could be a tumour of some kind, which in rare cases can be cancerous.

Treatment for Leg ConditionsShin splints can be treated by resting the leg and applying ice when the lump initially forms, then heat after it is reduced. Wearing shoes with arch supports or adding arch supports to an older shoe can help reduce the shock on the joints when running.

Stretch your legs before and after running and wear a shin splint or calf brace to support you after you return to running. A physical therapist can also provide an individualized treatment plan for you if you have this condition.

Muscle hernias, if not painful, should not cause a problem when running, but it's best to consult a doctor to be sure. All other possible causes will need to be diagnosed by a doctor. Even if the lump is not painful, there is the possibility it could be malignant, or cancerous.

Your thought for the week

Something to ponder over / something spiritual

On the Last Day of School before ChristmasIt seems that there was a lady named Jean Thompson and when she stood in front of her fifth-grade class on the very first day of school in the fall, she told the children a lie. Like most teachers, she looked at her pupils and said that she loved them all the same, that she would treat them all alike. And that was impossible because there in front of her, slumped in his seat on the third row, was a boy named Teddy Stoddard.

Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were unkempt and that he constantly needed a bath. Add to it the fact Teddy was unpleasant. As the school year went by it got to the point that she would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold 'X's and then marking the 'F' at the top of the paper biggest of all.

Because Teddy was a sullen little boy, nobody else seemed to enjoy him, either. Now at the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's records and because of things, put Teddy's off until the absolute last. But, when she opened his file, she was in for a sur-prise.

8

Page 9: This n That 08-12.doc · Web viewAgapé greetings. Race Results. Clicks Wierie (AGN) 10km race - 2019-08-09. Position. ... On the Last Day of School before Christmas. It seems that

His first-grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright, inquisitive child with a ready laugh. He does work neatly and has good manners...he is a joy to be around."

His second-grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student and is well-liked by his classmates -- but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle."

His third-grade teacher wrote, "Teddy continues to work hard, but his mother's death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesn't show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken."

Teddy's fourth-grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and sometime sleeps in class. He is tardy and could become a prob-lem."

By now Mrs. Thompson realized the problem, but Christmas was coming fast. It was all she could do, with the school play and all, until the day before the holidays began and she was suddenly forced to focus on Teddy Stoddard on that last day before the vacation would begin. Her children brought her presents, all in gay ribbon and bright paper, except for Teddy's, which was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper of a scissored grocery bag.

Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents and some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet, with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of cologne. She stifled the laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and she dabbed some of the perfume behind the other wrist.

At the end of the day, as the other children joyously raced from the room, Teddy Stoddard stayed behind, just long enough to say, "Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my mom used to." As soon as Teddy left, Mrs. Thompson knelt at her desk and there, after the last day of school before Christmas, she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she quit teaching reading and writing and speaking. Instead, she began to teach children. And Jean Thompson paid particular attention to one they all called "Teddy".

As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded and, on days that there would be an important test, Mrs. Thompson would remember that cologne. By the end of the year he had become one of the smartest children in the class and... well, he had also become the "pet" of the teacher who had once vowed to love all her children ex-actly the same.

A year later she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that of all the teachers he'd had in elementary school, she was his favourite.

Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. And then he wrote that as he finished high school, third in his class, she was still his favourite teacher of all time.

Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, that he'd stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would graduate from college with the highest of hon-ours. He assured Mrs. Thompson she was still his favourite teacher.

Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he got his bachelor's degree, he decided to go a little further. The letter explained that she was still his fa-vourite teacher, but that now his name was a little longer. And the letter was signed, "Theodore F. Stoddard, M.D."

The story doesn't end there. You see, there was yet another letter that Spring. Teddy said that...well, that he'd met this girl and was to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering...well, if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit in the pew usually reserved for the mother of the groom.

Most people overlook a child's heart when it is buried under pain. Take the time to give a wounded child your love and he will learn to love the world. Love is very powerful. Use its power wisely and someone will be the better for it.
