Transcript of This month we would like to continue with building resiliency in … · 2016. 3. 29. · This month...
This month we would like to continue with building resiliency in children. There is much research to
support the idea of raising resilient children, teaching them the tools they need to respond to the chal-
lenges of childhood and to develop these skills into adulthood. Resiliency is much more than simply
dealing with conflict, it focuses on the skills necessary to deal with many situations, in which we all en-
counter.
Today’s families are under tremendous stress with the potential to damage both physical and psycho-
logical well-being.
Dr. Ginsburg (M.D., MS Ed., FAAP) is a pediatrician who works out of The Children’s Hospital of Phila-
delphia. He has identified the 7 C’s of resilience that teachers, staff and parents can use to help their
children recognize their abilities and inner resources. So far we have examined Competence, Confi-
dence, Connection and Character. This month we will examine the fifth C – Contribution.
CONTRIBUTION
Children need to realize that the world is a better place because they are in it. Understanding the im-
portance of personal contribution can serve as a source of purpose and motivation. Teach your chil-
dren how to contribute by:
Communicating to children that many people in the world do not have what they need;
Stressing the importance of serving others by modeling generosity;
Creating opportunities for each child to contribute in some specific way.
Follow along next month as we examine the sixth C – Coping.
END OF YEAR AWARDS
End of year awards at Namao School have been a way to celebrate the successes of students during
the year and as such has been a celebration of our “tradition of excellence.” In the past, we have had
our awards day for Primary on the last day of school with our awards for Elementary and Junior High on
the evening the night before. However, this year, the last Gr. 9 PAT is on the last day of school, June
26. As such, in order to facilitate awards this year we are planning on having awards as follows:
Primary Awards – June 26 at 10:30 am.
Elementary Awards – June 26 at 1:00 pm.
Junior High Awards – June 29 at 1:00 pm.
June 29 is not a scheduled day for students, as such busses will not be running. Parents attending
awards at 1 pm on June 29 would be required to bring their students for the awards. This change is not
intended on being a permanent method of delivering Awards to our students, however, due to the
timing of this year’s PAT we feel this is the best alternative.

In mid-January, one of our Grade 1 students shared that she had become an Earth Ranger and had joined
the effort to protect the habitat of the Western Screech Owl which lives on the western side of the
Rocky Mountains in British Columbia. Our students were very interested in learning more about this
fascinating animal and decided that they too would like to raise awareness and work together to contribute
to the protection of the screech owl habitat. The students have worked very hard to learn about these
owls and demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. They also took their efforts a step further and
raised funds to support habitat protection through Earth Rangers and the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
On February 19th and 23rd the students held a school-wide bake sale and raised $380.00 for this
cause. Mrs. Cronshaw, Ms. Kleespies and the Grade 1 students would like to say a huge THANK YOU
to the parents and staff who donated baking, and to the students of Namao School for their support!
We are very grateful to the Grade 5 and 6 volunteers who ran the sale.
World Book Day is on March 5
To celebrate books and reading, we have embarked on a num-ber of school-wide activities. Please take some time to look at our Readers are Leaders wall which is east of the office across from the PEP classroom. You will see pictures of all of our staff and many of our students with books they are currently read-ing. We want our students to see that the staff at Namao School are readers too! All of the classroom doors will be covered with titles of favorite books, authors or book recommendations. On March 5, all staff and students are encouraged to dress up as a favorite book character. We will have the opportunity to see everyone’s costumes during our World Book Day parade at 9:00 a.m. on March 5, please drop by if you can.
As Harry Truman said “Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers.”

On February 20th Kindergarten went to St. Albert and visited the Art Gallery and Multimedia Studio. The children explored
art with their 5 senses and learned to appreciate all different kinds of art including video and still pictures of real life things. They created two different pieces of art using paper/stencils/crayons and clay to portray characteristics of them-
selves. It was an art terrific field trip!! Thank you to all our parent volunteers that made this trip happen!
Disconnect to Connect
On Family Day, students were asked to participate in our “unplugged hours” challenge by
participating in various activities that did not include electronic devices and submitted a
ballot of how many hours were spent “unplugged:”.
A draw was made and the winner was…
