to accept the Texas Conferences invitation to take part in the VCI process.VCI is a three stage process. The rst stage involved the assembly of a team of volunteers who

each committed to read a series of books and attend monthly meetings with teams from otherchurches engaging in this same process. The reading was signicant, and each months meetinglasted approximately four hours, so this was no small commitment. The purpose was to confrontnew ideas and get a glimpse of what vibrancy looks like in the church. This stage, which has been arich experience for our VCI team members and for me, draws to a close this month as we read ournal book and attend our nal meeting.

The Church Council has encouraged team members to begin sharing the ideas they haveencountered with more of the congregation. You will soon see some of the books they have readin your Sunday school classes, as well as in mid-week study groups. Dont miss the opportunity toencounter these books which have changed the hearts and minds of many who have read them.

With the close of the rst stage of the process, I am excited to announce that the Church

Council voted in September to continue on to stage two. This stage will involve a great deal ofdata gathering regarding both our church and our community. The purpose is to gain insight intowho we are and who our neighbors are. You may soon be approached by a member of the ChurchCouncil or VCI team as they go about this great task.

Once the requested data has been gathered and sent o, stage two continues with site visitsto our church to gauge what it is like to be a guest in our midst, and a consultation process. Theconsultants visit and subsequent report will likely come next spring, which will signal thetransition to stage three.

Stage three will be our opportunity to respond to the consultants report, which will includeseveral prescriptions, or changes we will be advised to make as we pursue vibrancy. Theseprescriptions will be oered to us as an all or nothing proposition: either we agree to follow all of

them, or we reject the consultants report. This decision will require a church-wide vote. Thus, no

tangible changes will be made until the entire congregation has a say in the matter. If we do not accept the prescriptions from our church consultant, we walk away and the VCI

process ends. If we do accept them, we will receive continued support from the Texas Conferenceas we implement changes over a series of months or even years. If youre interested in VCIs trackrecord, we learned at our original orientation meeting that approximately 75% of churchesengaged in the process, which is utilized in several states, accept all the prescriptions and continuethe process. Of the 25% who walk away, more than 90% of congregations come back within a yearto accept their prescriptions and continue the process.

VCI is a process that works. VCI helps congregations like ours become more vibrant, grow, andmake a signicant impact for the Kingdom of God. I hope you will join me inprayer for all that God has in store for us through VCI. If you have questions, please dont hesitate to ask me, or a member of the VCI team (see page 7.)

    Grace & peace,

    (cont. from pg. 1)
