H E A LT H REPORT

1Live the sweet lifeDark chocolate has the tick of approval

from researchers in Italy. Their study published in The Journal of Nutrition discovered that the fl avonoids packed into dark chocolate helps reduce infl ammation and may cut the risk of heart disease. Furthermore, Australian research out of Swinburne University of Technology reports that the polyphenols found in dark chocolate help promote feelings of calm and contentment as well as reducing oxidative stress in the body.

2Say cheers with water

The Harvard School of Public Health reports that we need to drink more water! According to their research, women need to consume approximately 11 cups or 2.75L a day and men need 15 cups or 3.75L a day. Pure, contaminant-free, alkaline water is best for your body! New research suggests that water’s hydrogen component has some profound effects on combatting toxicity, infl ammation and degenerative disease. The great news is that advanced water fi lter systems such as the AlkaWay UltraStream produce pure, contaminant free, and hydrogen-rich alkaline water. Tests show water from the UltraStream contains 10,000 times more active molecular hydrogen than ordinary tap water.

3Sleep inThe American Psychological Association

reports that getting enough sleep is crucial to a healthy life. You need to make sure you

get around seven hours of good quality, uninterrupted sleep each night to help

improve your mood, boost energy, cut food cravings, limit

the chance of putting on extra weight and even reduce your risk

of chronic diseases such as heart disease. In fact, Dutch research found that people who get less than seven hours of shut-eye a night increase their heart disease risk by 65 per cent! If you’re struggling to doze off, why not try having a cup of a relaxing camomile tea before you hit the sack?

4Brush upMake time for your

pearly whites each day by brushing and fl ossing at least twice daily. Not only will this help keep your teeth bright and healthy, but it will help prevent gum disease and tooth loss. Additionally,

American research has found that tooth brushing and keeping your teeth free of plaque helps reduce the risk of dementia and pneumonia. The British Medical Journal reported that people with poor oral hygiene were more likely to suffer from infl ammation and heart disease. Select a sugar-free toothpaste and soft-to-medium bristled brush.

6Stress lessUnmanageable stress – that is stress that

just doesn’t let up and you have trouble dealing with – is dangerous and bad for your health. It can lead to depression and anxiety, trouble at home and at work. Reduce stress by delegating, carving out some me-time in your day, exercising and eating a balanced diet. To help ease feelings of stress, anxiety and depression the Natural Medicine Journal suggests using lavender oil in oil burners, in your bath or infused in massage oil.

7 Be a natural beautySwap chemical for

natural, for glowing, healthy skin, according to an Australian report published in the International Journal of Chemistry comparing natural beauty products and chemical-based beauty products. The researchers determined that

natural beauty products are better for your skin and the environment because they contain more pure raw ingredients than chemical based products, and that there are less side-effects and reactions when using natural products rather than the chemical ones.

8Take a supplementLife can get busy in

the blink of an eye and often you need something to help keep you on top of your nutritional game. Taking a daily multi-vitamin

is a great way of doing this and ensures you’re getting the

nutrients you need. This is particularly important if,

like many people this New Year, you’re setting a resolution to lose weight. Since you eat less when trying to lose weight, it often means

you’re not getting all the nutrients you require. A

multi-vitamin helps keep your tank topped up.

9Go meat free While becoming a vegetarian or vegan

is a major lifestyle change, meat-eaters can

reap the benefi ts by going meat-free once or twice a week. According to Foodwise,

reducing the amount of meat you eat by going meat-free on Mondays will

help reduce your waistline, and the risk of developing bowel cancer and heart disease. To ensure you’re still getting enough protein, incorporate dairy, eggs, legumes, nuts and meat alternatives such as tofu

into your diet on days you’re not eating meat.

10Help othersLife is busy, we get that. We also

understand that you might barely have time to do all the things on your to-do lists each day. But, there is one thing you might want to consider doing…volunteering or helping others. Why? Because not only will they feel the positive effect of your assistance, but you will too. Research from East Carolina University in America found that people who volunteered experienced improved physical and psychological wellbeing. Volunte ering Australia reveals that 36 per cent of Australians volunteer their time to help others and that the two most common reasons that people volunteer is that it helps give them a sense of purpose and to make a difference to their community.

With the New Year rolling in, it’s time for out with the old and in with the new. Here are 10

tips to help bring about a new you. From diet, to beauty and wellbeing, you’ll be inspired to make some healthy changes. Simone McClenaughan reports.

5 load up onfruit and veg!

Fresh, organic fruit and vegetables taste great and

getting your daily dose of fruit and veg is important

in a balanced diet. However, upping your fruit and

vegetable intake just got a little bit more important.

The European Heart Journal has discovered that

every 80g portion of fruit and veg consumed

reduces the risk of heart disease by four per cent.

So if you eat fi ve serves of vegies and two serves

of fruit for a total of seven serves, that’s a potential

heart disease risk reduction of 28 per cent.

H E A LT H REPORT

Be inspired bythe incredible transformation

of Nathan Meola, who dropped 120 kilos in sevenyears. Here’s his story:

In 2005 I weighed 246 kilos. I’d been an overweight child who grew into an obese adolescent, then a morbidly obese young adult. The weight gain increased exponentially with each year; in 2003 and 2004 I put on more than 60 kilos. I was like an out-of-control freight train headed for the end of the line. Even though I was physically uncomfortable, hot and in back pain, my constant thought, which perhaps gives a glimpse into the perspective and priorities of a morbidly obese person, was ‘What’s for lunch?’

Growing up in an Italian/Spanish household, most of my earliest memories

included food. Celebrating, commiserating, whatever the occasion, food seemed to play a starring role. I can’t say this was the reason I became as heavy as I did, but it certainly contributed to my dysfunctional relationship with food.

The wake-up call came during my fi nal exams at high school. I couldn’t sit in the exam room with the other students because I couldn’t fi t in the seats, I had to apply for special disability consideration and sit my exams in a separate room by myself. I had such severe sleep apnea that I couldn’t even stay awake for the three-hour exams. Needless to say, when I got my results back I was devastated. It forced me to consider what my future might be if I continued to gain weight. What kind of life would I have to settle for? What compromises would I have to make in my career? How would I start a family and what kind of example would I be setting for my kids? How long would I live?

In January 2005 I had lap band surgery,

which restricts the amount and type of food you can eat. For the fi rst few weeks, all I could eat was soup. I craved lots of other foods, but eating them would just lead to pain, followed by the need to throw up. After six miserable months, I’d lost around 45 kilos. Then the weight loss slowed down and eventually stopped altogether. Although I initially thought weight-loss surgery sounded like a miracle, I soon discovered that imposing a physical restriction on the amount of food you can eat, without dealing with the reasons why you want to eat so much, is not the solution.

For nearly fi ve years, my weight stayed the same. I was depressed and felt like my last chance to drop the excess kilos had come and gone. Due to complications, the lap band was no longer restricting my food intake, so I was on my own again.

The real change came in 2010, when I spent four weeks at a weight-loss retreat learning everything about exercise and nutrition. I slowly began to break down the emotional barriers that caused me to gain so much weight in the fi rst place. I started working out with a personal trainer and changed my bad habits. I quit my sales job and found part-time work at Go Vita Sans Souci. I wanted to surround myself with people who I could learn from and who inspired me to continue living a healthy life. This was one of the most important factors in being able to continue losing weight – and keep it off. I now weigh 125 kilos and have been working as a personal trainer for almost a year, helping others to lose weight and live healthier, happier lives.

Nathan Meola works at Go Vita Sans Souci and at ONE Personal Training Solutions at Padstow. Connect with him on Facebook or Instagram:@natemeola for more weight loss tips or to get in touch.

Nathan’s top weight-loss tips

Ditch the scalesWeighing yourself might be easy, but it can also be misleading. Track your progress by recording your waist, hips and thigh measurements, seeing how your clothes fi t and how you feel.

Get liftingI didn’t see major changes in my body shape until I started resistance training. Find a good personal trainer to teach you correct weight-lifting techniques, and concentrate on big movements like squats, deadlifts and bench press for maximum calorie burn.

Increase the intensityResearch shows that 15 minutes of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) – alternating periods of explosive exercise with short periods ofrest – is equal to more than anhour of steady cardio work. You’ll also continue to burncalories up to 24 hours aftera HIIT session

Find a support networkIf friends encourage you tomake bad food choices on a daily basis, then it might be time to fi nd new people to hang out with.It can be a hard thing todo, but serious weightloss requires majorlifestyle changes.

Fish oil Scientifically proven to support weight loss, fish oil also supports healthy heart, brain, eye and joint health.

SpirulinaFull of helpful nutrients, spirulina also helps to stabilise blood sugar levels and reduce sugar cravings. I take spirulina in the afternoon, instead of sweet treat. Try Hawaiian Pacifica Spirulina.

Coconut oil This thermogenic fat helps boost metabolism, so use it in cooking, add it to protein shakes or eat it straight off the spoon! Try Banaban Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Coconut Oil from the Pacific Islands.

Today, women appear to suffer more hormonal related health issues

than ever before.Go magazin e chats to natural health practitioner, Tracey Yeend, about ways to manage hormonal imbalance from puberty to menopause.

Tracey Yeend runs two busy clinics in Adelaide and sees women with hormonal issues on a regular basis. She says, “The majority of women I see with hormonal imbalance are seeking relief from PMS, heavy bleeding or menopause symptoms and more often than not, their problems are aggravated by high oestrogen and long-term adrenal stress and fatigue. In these instances I tend to recommend the herb Vitex agnus castus or chaste tree, known for its ability to increase progesterone production. It is also useful for treating irregular cycles, erratic ovulation, acne, endometriosis, and uterine fi broids. For optimum results I use vitex in conjunction with the superior Ayurvedic herb, Shatavari, commonly known as asparagus root“.

Shatavari supports women’s vitalityConsidered the ‘queen of herbs’ in Ayurvedic medicine, Shatavari is known for cleansing, strengthening and nourishing female reproductive organs and normalising hormones. It can be used throughout a woman’s reproductive lifecycle, strengthening vitality and overall health and wellbeing. Its balancing effect means it is ideal for young women with painful, heavy periods (which usually improve once regular ovulation commences). Shatavari also helps to build blood and support deep tissue, making it useful for preparing the uterus for conception. And it is also benefi cial for post-menopausal women, including those who’ve had hysterectomies.

Transitioning from peri-menopause to menopauseTracey sees women in her clinic who have typically had regular cycles, which become unpredictable, with heavy bleeding and says, “For women experiencing peri-menopause symptoms, I aim to get them to transition into a symptom-free menopause. Shatavari and vitex help balance the hormones, lighten the bleed and restore a sense of regularity until menstruation stops. Best of all, if oestrogen is already elevated it won’t be raised further. Importantly, Shatavari will not extend the peri-menopausal period beyond what it would otherwise have been.”

Searching for the best product for youWhen it comes to hormonal imbalance, it is not always easy to know what is the best product for you, luckily Tracey has some words of advice, “While I am a big fan of vitex and Shatavari for women’s hormonal issues, if fatigue is also a factor, I would recommend in addition, around two grams daily of rehmannia, a herb which nourishes and supports depleted adrenal glands.”

The fi nal step in Tracey’s general treatment plan is the

mineral zinc (around 24mg of elemental zinc daily). She explains, “Oestrogen excess is linked to high copper levels and adequate zinc levels can help counteract this. Sage can also be helpful if a woman is experiencing hot fl ushes but I would normally advise you take this separately if it is needed so you can adjust the dosage if required.”

Words of cautionTracey cautions that in most instances “You need to seek the advice of a healthcare professional as many of the PMS/menopause formulas available, contain oestrogenic herbs such as black

cohosh, and for some people, this could exacerbate symptoms. In my practice I fi nd as many as 65 per cent of women over the age of 35 suffer from uterine fi broids, frequently the result of too much oestrogen. Often the only symptom of the fi broids is heavy bleeding, so many women are unaware they have them.” Tracey therefore avoids recommending oestrogenic herbs and prefers herbs such as Shatavari, which has the added benefi t of shrinking fi broids and lightening bleeding. Tracey Yeend has over 27 years of experience in many areas of women’s, children and family health. Based in Adelaide, she is a registered nurse, registered midwife, Ayurvedic and natural health practitioner, as well as holding qualifi cations in pharmacology and teaching.

Case storyMaggie is 45 and up until recently has had regular, pain-free periods. Lately her period arrives without warning and is extremely heavy (requiring pad changes every two hours) and she is experiencing cramps like she had as a teenager.

I prescribed her an herbal hormonal balancing formula, one tablet four times a day for the days she was bleeding and one tablet twice daily for the remainder of the month. The next time she had a period, the bleeding was markedly reduced and she found the cramping more manageable. By the third month, she was only having light periods which were pain free and these will probably continue until menstruation fi nally ceases of its own accord.

Narelle Mullerlooks at ways to boost everyday

energy levels.

Pssssst! Wanna know the secret to vitality, joy and longevity? I know many readers would love to know it comes in the form of a sin gle pill. Admittedly, that sounds appealing; however, the reality is so much more vivid and wonderful. It allows you to move with vigour, breathe

with exhilaration, eat with relish and sleep harmoniously. It takes effort, but the journey is part of the adventure. Ok, ok, we’ll cut to the chase and reveal the answer to a beautiful life.

Drum roll ... the secret is: great nutrition, plenty of water, regular movement, lots of laughter and a good quota of sound sleep every night. I can hear groans and cries of, “We’ve heard this all before”. The reason it keeps coming back is because it is true, it’s the secret to the one and only way to live optimally.

The sleep factorOne of the biggest factors infl uencing your day is how you slept last night. It will determine how much energy you have in your internal stores to face challenges and embrace opportunities, it will also depict, to a large extent, how you eat and consequently how you function.

In recent years much has been written about the effect sleep has on weight gain. This comes down to the body’s circadian rhythms, or our biological clock, which gives us cues through the release of hormones as to when it is time to sleep,

10 ISSUE 33 • 2014 11 ISSUE 33 • 2014

H E A LT H REPORT H E A LT H REPORT

wake, when we are hungry, when we are sated and so much more.

If our body clock is out of whack, our body systems become dysfunctional and we end up eating too much or too little, not sleeping, slumping at inopportune times of the day when we need to have clarity and vitality and generally fi ghting an uphill battle against the world and ourselves.

There’s a billion dollar industry in drugs that induce sleep alone, but with increasing awareness of the health side-effects there’s a growing movement towards more natural solutions.

Natural sleep solutionsLifestyle changes: A very simple and effective step towards good sleeping habits is to ensure your bedroom is totally dark. Any light, from an outside street lamp to a digital clock, even a full moon, can affect the release of our wake-up hormones and disrupt sleep patterns.

Block-out curtains or blinds can help, as can wearing an eye mask.

Exercise (though not before bedtime), light evening meals, disconnecting all electronic devices several hours before you go to bed and reducing alcohol and caffeine, are all good sleep habits.

Misguidedly, people often turn to stimulants such as caffeine and sugar when they’re experiencing an energy slump and while these do give a temporarily boost, there’s a price to pay. When we alter our chemical state artifi cially, we get a fast peak - then comes the crash.

Even when attempting to follow a healthy lifestyle regime we may still need a helping hand to bring the metabolism into balance and that’s where natural supplementation comes in.

Daily health insurance: If you are not sure if you’re getting all the nutrients you need from your daily diet then it may be worth investing in a daily multi

supplement to ensure you are! New to the market is Amazonia Raw Multi, a powder that encompasses a full array of live ingredients including essential herbs, seeds, super foods, veggies, sprouts, spices, sea minerals, live foods, grasses, roots, chlorophyll, berries and 13 strains of pre-probiotics. It’s a perfect way to start each day, simply add to water or juice.

Gentle homoeopathic remedies: Natural remedies with soothing homoeopathic ingredients and tissue salts taken throughout the day can have a calming physiological effect, preparing the entire body for rest at the end of the day. Some of these remedies are also suitable during pregnancy, a time when sleep patterns are often disturbed.

Amino acid therapy:Amino acids are the body’s

natural building blocks of protein, important for

neurotransmission, the sending of electrical impulses in the brain. If vital messages are not getting from the control centre to the worksites,

things are likely to go haywire. Researchers at the

University of Newcastle have drawn on years of research into

amino acid therapy with chronic fatigue patients; to conclude that amino acid supplementation (with Top Nutrition’s Fatigue REVIVA and its patented delivery system) is a way to improve energy

levels, sleep patterns and concentration. Natural herbal adaptogens:

These help the body to resist or cope with stress and are another means of attuning ourselves for better sleep and the consequent benefi t of increased vim and vigour. Many adaptogens work synergistically and products which contain rhodiola, Siberian ginseng and withania will all help to tune and strengthen the nervous system resulting in increased stamina as well as an ability to defl ect tension and go with the fl ow in times of hardship.

You and your partner’s good health and fi tness prior to conception are of paramount importance to not only

improve your chance of conception but to ensure a healthy pregnancy and baby.

Healthy diet with nutritional supportA healthy diet, with added nutritional support, plays a very important role for your health prior to and during pregnancy. Nutritional requirements are increased during pregnancy to help meet the additional energy demands of pregnancy, provide nutrients for the growth and development of your baby and build-up energy reserves in readiness for breastfeeding. Healthy diet

Your diet should consist of a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, wholegrains, lean meat, poultry, fi sh (small, short lived species are best to reduce mercury risk – such as salmon, trout, cod, whiting and sardines), dairy fo ods and plenty of pure water. Avoid processed or refi ned foods that have little nutritional value and foods that are more likely to contain listeria bacteria such as; soft or semi-soft cheeses, soft-serve ice-ream, pre-packaged fruit and vegetables, cold seafood and deli meats, pate, unpasteurised dairy products, sushi and sashimi.

Nutritional supportIn theory, a healthy varied diet should provide you with all the nutrients you need, but there are some vitamins and minerals that are especially important. Look for a specialised vitamin and mineral formula that will cater for the increased nutritional needs of preconception, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Important nutrients to look for include:• Folic acid to help prevent neural tube birth defects.• Vitamin B12 defi ciency increases the risk of neural tube

birth defects, even in women taking folic acid. • Iodine defi ciency is common in Australia. The healthy

development of your baby’s brain and nervous system relies on your thyroid hormone production.

• Choline defi ciency is a risk factor for neural tube birth defects and is important for healthy nervous system development. Many formulas do not contain choline so many pregnant women may have low choline levels.

• Vitamin D for healthy bones and teeth. Low levels of vitamin D are associated with impaired fertility and problems during pregnancy.

• Biotin is needed for rapidly dividing cells. Recent research published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has shown that pregnant women are slightly defi cient in biotin.

Regular exerciseKeeping up a level of fi tness during pregnancy is important for physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Exercise helps to reduce common complaints of pregnancy including backache, constipation, bloating or swelling and improves strength and endurance in readiness for labour and motherhood.

Positive lifestyle choices Maintain a healthy weight during pregnancy to reduce your risk

of complications. Avoid alcohol, cigarette smoke, toxins and chemicals. Plan, schedule and prioritise your sleep and if you’re tired, rest. Learn to say ‘no’ and ask for help when you need it to reduce

stress levels. Keep communication lines open in all your relationships. Daily pelvic fl oor exercises to reduce the risk of incontinence. Take a daily supplement to ensure your increased nutritional

needs are met.

5 Keep stress under control – eat in a quiet, relaxed environment.

6 Supplement with probiotics to help build up the good gut fl ora,

which assist digestion and help build immunity – take a supplement or eat fermented foods such as yoghurt, miso, tempeh or sauerkraut. For IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) sufferers, a strain of Lactobacillus plantarum (Lp299v), has been extensively researched and is widely used in Europe for the management of the condition.

7 Supplement with plant derived digestive enzymes if you are suffering

digestive symptoms such as indigestion, fl atulence or bloating – the body does produce enzymes (such as amylase, pepsin, proteases and lipase) which help break down the nutrients in food (such as carbohydrates, proteins and fats) into smaller molecules that the body can easily absorb and use. Sadly the modern diet contains high levels of foods containing saturated fats, complex carbohydrates

and proteins which can put extra strain on the digestive system. Supplementing with a plant derived digestive enzyme supplement can help support digestion and relieve some common digestive complaints. Ginger is also a great digestive soothing herb that is sometimes added to digestive enzyme supplements.

8 Ensure you have suffi cient fi bre in your diet to keep you regular

– if you are not sure, taking a daily fi bre supplement could be a great support to your digestive system. Psyllium is a good source of fi bre, it absorbs a great deal of water in the intestinal tract, helping to soften stools. Because it swells inside the intestines, psyllium also helps to make you feel more full and satisfi ed after meals. Taking a fi bre supplement that also contains taurine and glycine can help improve the production of healthy bile, and help with the removal of excess cholesterol from your body. To really have maximum impact on your digestive system, try a

fi bre supplement such as Cabot Health Fibretone which also includes liver herbs dandelion root and St Mary’s thistle. These herbs have a cleansing and healing effect on the liver and help stimulate the gall bladder and improve fat metabolism. Fibretone is excellent for people with constipation, abdominal bloating, fl atulence, diverticulitis or gall bladder conditions or those who suffer a fatty liver.

Article adapted from Your Guideto a Health y Gut, Go MagazineAugust 2013.

Digestion begins when you eat food to access nutrients so you can absorb and employ them for a multitude of vital bodily functions. While it would be nice if everything ran according to plan, you often thwart the grand scheme by lifestyle infl uences such as unsuitable diet, taking medications, not staying well hydrated, not exercising enough and allowing too much stress into your life. Your emotional health plays a crucial part in gut function as your gut and brain work in tandem, constantly relaying messages back and forth.

Eight steps to a healthier gut

1Eat well – lots of organic, fresh fruit and fruit juices, raw veggies, steamed

veggies and fi sh, will help maintain a healthy digestive system.

2Drink alkalised pure water – to help clear toxins from your system.

3Swap coffee for refreshing herbal teas – from a naturopathic perspective,

people who suffer from tummy troubles are often advised to avoid coffee, especially

if they’re prone to diarrhoea. Caffeine doesn’t just stimulate your mind; it also stimulates your gut, which can hasten the speed at which the food you eat moves through your gastrointestinal tract and is excreted out the other end. Try refreshing herbal teas such as peppermint, chamomile and fennel, all of have traditionally been used to help relieve fl atulence, bloating and cramping pain.

4 Chew your food well before swallowing – this helps to make it

easier on your digestive system to do its job.

&optimising absorption of

zinc magnesium

Naturopath Paul Keogh explains how your choice of

mineral supplement affects your body’s ability to use and absorb it. Given that we live in the lucky country with its abundance of fresh produce, you’d be forgiven for assuming that Australians have healthy, nutritious diets. In reality, the diets of many Australian adults are low in some of the nutrients most essential to our health and wellbeing.

For instance, the National Nutrition Survey demonstrated that in many age groups, the average consumption of zinc and magnesium by Australian adults is less than the recommended dietary intakes (RDIs).

People who are at particular risk of these nutritional shortfalls include athletes, adolescents, men and women over 65, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and vegetarians and vegans.

On the surface, the solution might seem as simple as popping a pill. Surely taking a mineral supplement will sort out any issues and top up your levels of these critical nutrients?

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple,

because your ability to absorb zinc, magnesium and other minerals from supplements is affected by the form they’re in. Here’s a basic summary of the science involved.

Organic versus inorganic mineralsBroadly speaking, minerals come in two forms: organic and inorganic. (In this context the word ‘organic’ doesn’t refer to pesticide-free farming, but instead is used in the chemical sense, where it refers to compounds that contain organic acids eg. amino acids and citric acid).

In many instances, the minerals found in supplements are inorganic. For example, zinc is often found bound with sulfur to form zinc sulfate, while magnesium may be bound to oxygen to form magnesium oxide.

Inorganic minerals are diffi cult to absorbWhen you consume an inorganic mineral salt, your body starts to break it down very quickly after you ingest it, because the acidic environment of the stomach causes the mineral to dissociate from the compound it’s bound to.

In its unbound state, the mineral can readily bond to another compound it encounters during digestion – commonly compounds called phytates, which are

naturally present in whole grains, nuts and some vegetables – and can travel the length of your digestive system trapped in these compounds and unable to be absorbed and utilised.

The freed mineral may also cause unpleasant irritation when it comes into contact with the gastrointestinal mucous membranes, sometimes having a laxative effect or causing diarrhoea.

Organic minerals offer enhanced absorptionIn contrast, organic minerals are very well absorbed, and less prone to causing digestive discomfort.

For example, when zinc or magnesium is bound to the amino acid glycine to form zinc glycinate and magnesium glycinate, they are highly bioavailable. This is because glycine binds to the mineral in two places, making it stable enough to pass through the stomach without being split apart.

Once it arrives in the intestines, the zinc or magnesium glycinate can be absorbed into the mucous membranes intact, without competing with other minerals (such as calcium) for access to absorption sites, and without drawing fl uid out of the tissues and into the bowel where it can cause digestive problems such as diarrhoea.

All this science might sound a bit mind boggling, but what you really need to

know is that when it comes to choosing a supplement, organic sources of minerals are your best bet. Look for products containing organic minerals such as zinc glycinate, magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate and magnesium aspartate – these tend to be better absorbed and more usable by your body than inorganic mineral salts such as zinc sulfate, magnesium carbonate and magnesium oxide.

The difference in absorption could be substantial, making it well worth your while choosing your mineral supplements carefully, even if it means spending a little extra money to get a highly bioavailable product.

Paul Keogh is the executive and technical director for Global Therapeutics P/L trading as Fusion Health. Paul is a qualifi ed naturopath and medical herbalist with 25 years combined experience in clinical practice and the development of integrated Chinese and western herbal medicines.

Why might you want more magnesium?

Why is Zinc so important?

Whym

Zinc is required by every oneof your cells, and is involvedin a myriad of physiologicalprocesses. Below are just a fewof the many reasons you need it:

IMMUNITY: Zinc is required for the production, activity and healthy functioning of cells that identify and destroy invading disease-causing organisms. This has many implications for human health – for example, it means zinc assists in the defense of colds, and may help reduce their frequency, severity and duration.

SKIN, HAIR AND NAILS: Zinc is essential for the formation and repair of collagen, and consequently for the maintenance of healthy skin, hair and nails. For example, it’s required for the healing of cuts, scratches and acne. It may also help address hormone imbalances linked to some types of hair loss.

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH: Zinc is essential for men’s prostate health, the maintenance of normal testosterone levels, and sperm production and function. It also supports the production and balance of women’s hormones.

VISION, HEARING, TASTE AND SMELL: Zinc defi ciency can interfere with your ability to see, hear, taste and smell properly, causing symptoms such as night blindness and a reduced ability to smell or taste your food. It may be benefi cial for age-related hearing loss.

DIGESTION AND BLOOD SUGAR BALANCE: Zinc is required for blood sugar regulation. Due to its role in tissue healing, it may also support the integrity of gastrointestinal mucous membranes and improve gut health.

Like zinc, magnesium is involved in hundreds of physiological functions –

here’s an overview of some of the most important:

ENERGY PRODUCTION: Your cells need magnesium in order to generate energy. No wonder it’s often used to reduce fatigue and enhance stamina!

ELECTROLYTE BALANCE: Due to its vital role in fl uid balance, magnesium is essential for recovery after exercise and other activities associated with perspiration loss.

MUSCLE FUNCTION: Magnesium is required for muscle contraction and relaxation. Taking supplements may relieve defi ciency symptoms such as muscle spasms and cramps.

HEART HEALTH: Unsurprisingly, magnesium is essential for the health of the heart – the only muscle in your body that’s actively working every moment of the day and night. It’s also required for cholesterol and blood pressure regulation.

BLOOD SUGAR: Like zinc, magnesium is involved in the maintenance of healthy blood sugar.

NERVOUS SYSTEM: Magnesium regulates the nervous system to help relieve stress, nervous tension, irritability and mild anxiety. It can be particularly benefi cial during times of stress or insomnia, and to relieve certain neurological conditions, such as restless legs.

WOMEN’S HEALTH: Taking magnesium may help relieve period pain and premenstrual symptoms such as mood swings, fl uid retention and migraines. Maintaining adequate levels may also help reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis.

Since 2005, Yalari has been providing Indigenous children

with full scholarships for their entire secondary school education. In January this year, Yalari brought its 43 new Indigenous scholarship students together on the Gold Coast for a camp to orientate them to their new life at boarding school. As these students begin their remarkable journey, it’s fair to say that the next fi ve to six years while fi lled with opportunities, will test their resolve, as they begin a life away from their family and community. But judging by past experience, over 90 per cent of them will fi nish year 12 at the school they now attend.

As these students start their journey, another group of 24 Yalari 2013 graduates, start a another journey as they head to university (17 students) or traineeships and employment (the remaining seven students).

Yalari is immensely proud of these 24 students and the 64 who graduated before them. They are living proof of the Yalari program success. Many are the fi rst in their families to complete high school, and most are the fi rst in their families and communities to attend university. The example they set has a profound effect in their communities in remote, rural and regional Australia.

Five of the 2013 graduate students are training to become teachers and others are headed to courses as diverse as aquaculture, commerce, international relations, psychology and media studies. Others are beginning their training as carpenters, nurses, aircraft engineers, mechanics and paramedics.

These young graduates have come a long way in fi ve or six years but they never forget where they come from and are immensely proud of their culture and ancestors. The difference is they now have the education and the confi dence to take them wherever they want to go.

Go Vita has been looking after the health of Australians for 25 years and now thanks to your support, and the amazing work of Yalari, we are providing three

Indigenous Australian children with the opportunity of a secondary education. www.yalari.org

According to the National Heart Foundation, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in Australia, killing one person every 12 minutes. One of the risk factors for CVD is high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol – the so-called ‘bad cholesterol’ – so discovering that beta-glucans can lower LDL cholesterol is great news.

The benefi ts of beta-glucanBeta-glucan is a concentrated,

soluble fi bre found in the outer layers of oats and other

grains, such as barley, rye and wheat.

When ingested, it forms a thick gel that binds

to excess cholesterol and prevents it from being absorbed in the gut. Instead, the excess cholesterol and gel are excreted as waste matter. Also, since cholesterol is an essential component of bile (an acid required for digestion), when levels of cholesterol drop, the body has to take more cholesterol out of the blood stream to produce bile. This reduces overall levels of cholesterol circulating around the body. Scientifi c studies have revealed that beta-glucan can help lower LDL cholesterol by about 10 per cent, with much of the research concentrated on oat beta-glucan. So, can someone get the same effect by eating just plain oats? One serve of oats contains around three per cent of beta-glucan, so supplementing with a concentrated form of oat beta-glucan is far more effi cient. Look for a beta-glucan supplement with good solubility and a high molecular weight, important for gel formation to mop up excess cholesterol.

We love apple cider vinegar atGo Vita! Here are our top 12 uses for this centuries old remedy.

1Digestive and weight loss aid: A 2005 Swedish study showed how sipping apple cider vinegar mixed with water during a

meal, helped keep blood sugar and insulin levels lower, helping to reduce cravings and increase your level of fullness after eating. A 2009 study reported in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry found consuming acetic acid (contained in apple cider vinegar) for 12 weeks led to signifi cant declines in body weight, abdominal fat, waist circumference and triglycerides.

2Neutralise stomach acid: After consuming a particularly fatty meal, take two teaspoons of cider vinegar in a glass of water

to relieve the nauseous feeling and get your digestion working better! While helping digestion is apple cider vinegars biggest claim to fame, helping indigestion and acid refl ux problems have been added to its growing list of benefi ts. For best results dilute one to three teaspoons apple cider vinegar in warm water and consume before every meal.

3Help improve sleep: Mix one or two teaspoons with a little honey and some water, and sip prior to bed, traditionally this

mixture was used to help bring about sleep.

4 Remove lint from clothes: Add half a cup

to rinse cycle.

5 Clean and disinfect wooden cutting boards: Wipe

with full strength cider vinegar.

6 Remove spots and fi lm from glasses: Rinse glasses in water and

cider vinegar.

7 Clean windows and fl oor tiles:Add cider vinegar to wash water.

8Extend the life of fresh cut fl owers: Add two tablespoons cider vinegar and

one teaspoon sugar to each litre of water.

9 Keep pet fur shiny and eliminate odours: Add cider vinegar to pet’s

drinking water.

10 Deodorise fridge: Place a cup of apple cider vinegar inside the

refrigerator for two days.

12For a fresh, healthy complexion: Dilute one part

apple cider vinegar to two parts water (make more dilute for sensitive skin) and use a cotton ball to dab on your face after cleansing and before applying moisturiser. Helps balance the pH level of the skin and the antibacterial and antifungal properties of the cider vinegar help prevent acne problems.

My cider vinegar looks strangeIf you notice a slimy layer inside your cider vinegar bottle, don’t worry and don’t throw it out! That’s called the ‘mother’ and is actually cellulose, a natural fi bre produced by the vinegar bacteria, and some say this is the most nutritious part of the vinegar! Also note that because it’s an acid, cider vinegar should always be stored in glass, not plastic, bottles.

What is apple cider vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar has been used since 5000BC as a tonic and beverage; it is made from the juice of whole apples that have undergone a fermentation process until their sugars turn to vinegar.

As the weather heats up, so does your chance of becoming dehydrated. To avoid dehydration it’s important to maintain your fl uid intake and also replace the fl uids you lose due to sweating and exercise. Pure water is by far your best option and should make up the major part of your daily fl uid intake. Here are some other options to try:

Go coconutsCoconut water, rich in electrolytes, is excellent for lowering blood pressure

reports the West Indian Medical Journal. A study found that hypertensive patients who consumed coconut water for two weeks reduced systolic

blood pressure by 71 per cent and diastolic blood pressure by 29 per cent.

Stay healthy and hydrated this summer with some of the best drinks for your wellbeing. Simone McClenaughan reports.

Beautiful beet juiceBeetroot juice is up there with salmon and blueberries in terms of nutritious super food status! Not only does it reduce blood pressure, new studies suggest the nitrates it contains allow people to exercise up to 16 per cent longer because of their ability to reduce oxygen uptake, so you are less tired while exercising.

Replace mineralsFor athletes and regular gym goers, it is especially important to put back the electrolytes you lose through your workout, to help prevent cramping and fatigue. While coconut water is ideal, an electrolyte mineral mix will feed your body so you can perform to your maximum.

Time for teaTea is one of the most popular and ancient drinks around. It’s not surprising given that green varieties especially are known to help prevent cancer and heart disease, reduce oxidative stress, insulin resistance and hypertension. In the warmer months, try making your own sugarless iced tea as Harvard research has found that consuming commercial sugary iced teas may lead to weight gain and diabetes.

Coffee breakThe American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published the results from the Iowa Women’s Health Study which discovered that coffee consumption may prevent infl ammation, which is a risk of heart disease because coffee is a major source of antioxidants. The Dieticians Association of Australia recommends limiting coffee to three or four cups of percolated or drip coffee each day due to the caffeine content.

Clean up A green liquid, chlorophyll, is made from alfalfa concentrate and helps to remove

impurities and toxins from the body as well as managing bad breath and body odour. A teaspoon in one glass of water a day is ideal.

Milk itGood ol’ milk is renowned for its health benefi ts such as supporting healthy bones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis, diabetes and colon cancer and is a brilliant source of calcium and vitamins. For vegans, people who are lactose intolerant or simply don’t like cow milk, there are a number of alternatives such as soy, rice, almond and oat milks.

Feeling juicyResearch has outlined the many benefi ts of juices, such as beetroot juice lowering blood pressure, cranberry juice preventing urinary tract infections, and blueberry juice improving memory function.

Smooth movesA nice treat on a hot day, smoothies combine the goodness of fruit, vegetables, dairy and dairy alternatives, as well as little extras that will further boost your health. Adding linseed, sunfl ower seed and almond (LSA) mix to your smoothie will increase your vitamin E consumption and a sprinkle of chia seeds will give you a hit of omega-3 fatty acids and fi bre. L I V E WELLL I V E WELL

If one of your New Year resolutions is to get healthy, then including more nutrient-dense, raw fruit and vegetables in your diet is a good

start. One of the easiest ways to do this, is to blend yourself a wholesome smoothie, it’s as easy as 1 2 3!

Choose a dairy or dairy alternative baseStart by selecting a protein rich base for your smoothie – you may decide on full cream or skim milk as your base or a dairy free alternative such as soy, rice or almond milk. For some, you may prefer to add a scoop of plant protein powder with water to form the base, such as NutraLife Whole+ Organic Protein powder, from pea and rice protein which is dairy

and soy free and rich in enzymes to assist digestion.

Choose a variety of colourfulfruits and vegetables

By selecting as many different coloured plant foods as possible, you are able to access a wider range of nutrients. For example:

Orange fruits and vegetables such as rockmelons, pawpaw and

carrots are rich in the antioxidant betacarotene, important for the health

of your skin, lungs, immune system and vision.

Green leafy vegetables such as spinach and bok choy are very high in the essential minerals iron and magnesium and the antioxidant folate, important for healthy blood and the healthy functioning of the nervous system.

Purple-red fruits and vegetables contain powerful antioxidants benefi cial for the health of the skin and cardiovascular system. Grapes, blueberries and eggplant are high in anthocyanadins, antioxidants that work to build strong blood vessels. Red capsicum and strawberries are high in vitamin C, benefi cial for building healthy, collagen rich skin, and supporting the health and integrity of blood vessels.

A convenient way to add a wide range of colourful fruits and vegetables is to use a scoop of a wholefoods powder such as NutraLife Whole+ Fermented Superfood. Fermenting increases the bioavailability of nutrients for more effi cient absorption, unlocking benefi cial nutrients and promoting healthy bacteria in the intestinal tract. Another option is Amazonia Raw Food Multi which combines a full colour spectrum of essential herbs, seeds, superfoods, veggies, sprouts, sea minerals, live foods, grasses, berries and 13 strains of pre-probiotics. Just add water or juice!

Add an extra boostAdding a ‘little something extra’ can

help boost your smoothies’ health benefi ts. Here’s a start:

LSA mix (linseed, sunfl ower seed and almond) will provide a vitamin E boost, great for your skin, heart and muscles.

Chia seeds, a great vegetarian source of omega-3 fatty acids and great

source of fi bre. If you do add chia seeds, consume your smoothie immediately, as if left

to sit chia seeds will create a gel-like consistency to your smoothie.Raw cacao powder adds a lovely chocolaty fl avour and will

boost your magnesium levels, helping create a relaxed and happy nervous system. Oats will boost your energy levels, great if recovering from illness.

Do protect your skin from the sun, especially during summer months. Wear a hat, use a sunscreen and avoid long periods of time in the sun.

Do a patch test of any new skin care product – place a small amount on the inside of your wrist, apply a Band-Aid over the top and leave for 24 hours without water. This will give you an indication if that product will be suitable for your skin.

Do make sure your hair care products contain natural non-irritating ingredients and you swap soap for natural alternatives, such as the Mineral Energy Bath & Shower Gel.

Amazingly, half of us suffer with sensitive skin conditions and experts agree that this number is set to rise. Here are Go magazine’s top tips for what to do and what not to do!

continued over

The increased use of synthetic ingredients in personal care products is one theory that explains why today, skin seems to be more sensitive; however there are numerous other theories that range from the increase in allergies, to environmental pollution, to the popularity of harsh treatments such as skin peels and microdermabrasion that are making your skin more vulnerable. We also know that hormone fl uctuation, certain foods and stress, both emotional and environmental (from harsh weather

for instance), can temporarily upset your skin. Whatever

the reason, it is clearthat the burning, itchy

sensation of s e n s i t i v e skin is here to stay.

What to DO to calm sensitive skin Do read labels carefully. Sensitive skin

tends to be quite dry, but responds to the nourishment offered by rich natural emollients (moisturising ingredients that help lock in moisture).

Do reduce the number of skincare products you use, keeping to a simple natural routine is best.

Do be aware that allergies or sensitivities to skin care and cosmetic products can build up slowly over years. Therefore a product you’ve used for a couple of years could well be the culprit for your red, itchy skin.

Do try pure almond oil or jojoba oil to moisturise particularly sensitive, irritated skin. Apply on a cotton cloth and gently pat the skin.

Do ensure you drink plenty of pure, alkalised water every day to help keep the skin hydrated from the inside. Add a dash of lemon or chlorophyll for extra cleansing and purifying benefi ts.

jojoba oil a multivitamin for your skinSydney-based naturopath Anastasia Zafi ropoulos recommends jojoba oil as a moisturiser, particularly for dry skin, just a few drops applied to the face and body as needed helps to restore moisture to the skin. It can be used after showering, shaving or waxing. A few drops added to a lukewarm bath, helps leave your skin feeling soft and supple. Jojoba oil also makes a great natural alternative to using mineral based ‘baby oils’, as it is gentle enough to be used on baby’s sensitive skin. The Jojoba Company of Australia was fi rst in the world to make the connection between the ability of the jojoba plant wax esters to protect skin against moisture loss and their ability to deliver nutrients deep into the skin. After much research and international collaboration, they developed a natural skin care range with jojoba as the hero ingredient, ideal for dry skin conditions.

What NOT TO DO if you have sensitive skin Don’t use harsh exfoliants containing coarse nuts

and shells, on sensitive skin as they will simply exacerbate the situation.

Don’t use products containing harsh cleansers, sulfates, parabens, benzoyl peroxide, PABA, SLS or fragrances, as they will strip sensitive skin of natural oils and dry out or irritate your skin.

Don’t use hot water to cleanse skin, use lukewarm water which is less irritating. (Saunas and steam rooms are also a no-no!)

Don’t use petroleum-based products, as these just form a barrier on your skin but don’t nourish, soothe or hydrate your skin.

Don’t touch your face throughout the day! Surprisingly we do this more often than we think and it is one way we can transfer bacteria that can irritate the skin.

Don’t roughly rub your skin with a towel after showering, as this will irritate, just gently pat skin dry.

Don’t consume foods you know irritate your skin such as red wine or hot spices.

Immune health – make sure your children wash their hands regularly with soap and water. If their diet lacks vitamin C, supplement them daily. Try liquid olive leaf extract in breakfast juice for the next month to help build up their immune system.

Eat more fi sh – it’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help maintain children’s brain function. Low intakes of omega-3 have been linked with learning problems and ADHD. Try to include fi sh in your family’s diet several times a week. Oily fi sh like mackerel, salmon and herring are good choices. Some children benefi t from omega-3 supplements.

Regular exercise – keeps them healthy, alert and energised!

Adequate sleep – keeps them performing well and keeps their immune system healthy! Aim for eight to 12 hours every night.

Hy dration – children need plenty of fresh, pure water. We love Cheeki stainless steel drink bottles, free of harmful BPA found in plastic bottles.

R egular meals – your children need fuel to make it through the day. Children who don’t eat breakfast or lunch may fi nd it harder to concentrate, not learn as well and may not get all the nutrients they need for growing.

Healthy snacks – avoid unhealthy boxed snacks particularly those with additives in the 600s – check labels carefully – the 600s reportedly lead to lack of focus and brain fog. Opt for fruits, healthy smoothies, wholegrains, yoghurt, low fat cheese, hard boiled eggs, raw veggies and homemade dips.

Rescue ointment – Brauer natural Paw Paw ointment is handy in the schoolbag for dry, cracked skin and chapped lips.

Now the kids are back at school, the pencils are sharpened, the books are bought and covered, it’s time to focus on making sure they’re off to a healthy start.

Go Vita Springwood is a bit of an institution; it’s been in the main street of Springwood for over 45 years, and for 25 years has been owned and run by local residents John and Colleen Baker and daughter Liz. Liz, a mother of two, spent an anxious day when the fi res fi rst hit, not being able to contact her children who had been evacuated from school and taken to safety. Over 500 frightened children were evacuated, and the teachers and staff did a stellar job in maintaining calm and order despite the fact that three of them lost everything that day. This really affected Liz and her sister who were in awe of the courage and selfl essness shown; they

knew they had to do something to help. They started with signs outside the shop asking for donations of blankets, food and clothing; home baked meals were delivered to the shop and then taken to exhausted fi reman; Facebook posts asked for items for kitchen starter packs and so it grew. The Go Vita Springwood team were overwhelmed by the generosity of their friends, family, suppliers and of course their customers. In the words of Liz’s Facebook post, “we witnessed the transition from shock and devastation to a renewed sense of purpose and can-do attitude. The experience has been humbling to say the least, and we feel privileged to be part of this great community. Thank you!”

Go VitaSpringwood lends a hand

In October last year, the worst fi res to hit New South Wales

since the 60s devastated several Blue Mountains communities, including Springwood and Winmalee. Yet, in true Aussie style, it wasn’t long before people looked for ways to help. Go Vita Springwood was among them.

From left: Liz and John Baker with Andrew O’Keefe (Go Vita CEO) who visited the store to offer his support.
