On the club side of things I have been flat out with the Website, which is now up and running. I have also been working on the new Club Shirts, the first samples of the shirts have arrived, see “all the goss” for more details…..Sorry I missed the Mandorah Run, I was in Bali at the time, well I’m not really that sorry, it was a great holiday with the kids. Cheers Wilko

“All the Goss”

Club Shirts; Stocks of the club shirts are running low and we have been pursuing other options to see what is available. Club sponsor Tony Gray from Autobarn put us onto Bud Clothing and we came up with a design that is both modern and depicts the essence of the Classic Holden. As you can see from the handsome model wearing the shirt they will really make you stand out in a crowd. If you are interested in a full button up shirt we can accommodate that as well, Just order them through your Treasurer, Ian Campbell. Club Donation; A belated thank you goes to Paul Whitaker who donated $200 to the club to go towards the new trailer. In his words “I haven’t done much for the club of late and it’s the least I could do”. John Palamountain, on behalf of the committee sends a grateful thank you for your kind donation.

Rex Hales has been busy with his HT Premier, hot on the heels after that beautiful respray he is upgrading that tired transmission for a modern T700. A few modifications have been made and it should be back on the road in no time.

Harry Mellios has bought half a car, literary. After being contacted by a MVEC Katherine member Harry did the deal on half an FJ Holden. The old FJ that used to adorn the bar wall of the old Dolphin hotel in Millner (about where spotlight is now), then for many years after the bar room of the Emerald Springs Hotel. The car has seen better days and Harry’s intention is to fix it up and have it on display at his place, You should check it out at next years “City to Souvlaki” run. He may also be interested in buying the other half if you see one lying around….

A little birdy spotted an FE Sedan on the back of a Tilt Tray the other day, I’d like to think the owner Mal Janes (who has a thing for FE’s) is as proud as punch to own such an original looking car that has survived the ravages of time in the kind and tender care of ‘an ole Cocky’ in Whyalla in SA. The only reason the bloke sold it was that he was too old to drive….. Due to the lack of response from members, the committee cancelled the September “Croc Cruise”. Sometimes I just don’t understand it, the committee goes to great lengths to organise events for members and we don’t get any response. RSVP’s would appreciated. The Committee wishes to thank Adam Bowman of Litchfield tours, for his offer of organising the Croc Cruise for the Club. The committee puts out repeated requests for ideas for club functions and events. Please tell us what you would like to do, or better still organise an event for your fellow Holden enthusiasts. The imagination is unlimited.

“Supercheap Bathurst Show” The Holden V Ford Bathurst Precursor show saw a display with 32 participants from both genres and a few ring ins. The day started with a parking frenzy akin to a Coles car park with display cars competing with shoppers for spots, but once we had taken over it was well arranged with cars around the lawn area and some up close and personal with the shop.

Catering honors went to CFCCNT and Ford BBQ tent was running hot all day selling sausage Sangas and soft drinks. It was a well set up display with, at a guess, several hundred people passing through.

There were some great prizes on offer, $250 gift card for the best Holden and another for the best Ford and great ‘goodie bags’ for all the other winners. Best Ford went to Michael Dickinson and his XR Sedan, Best Holden went to Ian Campbell with his EH Sedan (anyone with a spare display cabinet or feather duster for sale pleases ring Ian).

Judges Choice went to an AC Cobra owned by Troy Glover (must have had a ford motor) and Peoples Choice was club member Adam Bowman and his GTS Monaro. (A Holden) Best original went to Wilko with his “finally” restored HZ GTS Monaro with Grumpy picking up the final bag of bits for having the best mutilated car (yep his EH Wagon was out and about)

All in all a good day with the CHCC taking four of the six prizes on offer. Thanks go to Supercheap and Shannons insurance for putting on such a great show.

Grumpy

“Mandorah run”

After an apprehensive week wondering if more rain would fall on the weekend and compromise the Run, Sunday turned out to be a beautiful day. 16 cars turned up at Coolalinga with two more joining us on the way….40 people looking forward to lunch at Mandorah Pub and the cruise there and back. We had a gaggle of Monaros (Greg, Peter, Kerry), a cluster of EH’s (Grumpy, Ian, Xavier ) a One tonner (Brent), a Ute (Trevor), Torana SS hatchback (Damon), FJ (Dave), HT Kingswood 253V8(Stephen), Torana XU-1 (Alan), GrpA Blue Meanie Commodore(Jeff), HK station wagon(Patrick), Camaro (Trevor), HQ Premier ( Larrie ), VE Ute (Steve) and a Suzuki Sierra.

We proceeded from Coolalinga to Darwin River Dam to see the new, heightened dam wall. A very pretty spot which should be the site of a Club BBQ in the future (Apparently we did one in 2006 and had a good turnout). While there we were entertained by Grumpy’s 60’s music (tapes not Grumpy singing, heaven forbid).

The run from there to Mandorah was very scenic as everything was green from the recent rain. The road was perfect and enabled a number of members to blow the cobwebs out of their cars (sticking to the speed limits of course!). Ah the sound of V8’s and supercharged sixes was a real turn on. Grumpy enjoyed the chance to give his recently completed EH a run and stretch its legs.

A future showdown at the street drags at Hidden Valley between Grumpy’s supercharged EH and Wilko’s warmed over HZ GTS would be an interesting event (How about it guys?) We just managed to park all the cars fronting the Marina and then proceeded to enjoy simple tucker under the shade of the substantial verandahs of the Mandorah Pub and gaze across the harbor at Darwin. A very pleasant lazy lunch. Club members left singularly at different times to return back to Darwin, some looked at Wagait Beach and Tumbling Waters Holiday Park on the way home. We only had three members (that I am aware of) with problems on the run. Damon’s Torana SS ran over a branch while avoiding an errant driver and luckily only suffered a pulled out seal on his right rear flare but was a bit shaken up by the incident. Stephen had overheating problems in his HT due to a cracked heater hose, after redirecting some hoses he managed to get home. Craig Dawson turned up at Coolalinga with his HK Monaro but couldn’t come on the run due to a coolant leak. All in all a very pleasant and successful outing and looking forward to next year.

“HZ GTS”

It’s been a long time coming but its finished, well as finished as any classic car can be……. Well, there’s always something more to do isn’t there. I dropped the HZ off to T&L panel works in Coconut Grove about a year ago and while work was done sporadically it was done well.

During the build it was discovered that many parts would need to be replaced. A full rubber kit, door hinges, little things like clips, and a stack of other parts. Rare Spares and Autobarn came to the rescue over and over again. It couldn’t have been done without them.

The major hassle I had with the car was with the stripes, (hit me up and I’ll tell you a story, as the car had to be sprayed twice), but I like to thank Ray Younger for his skill and unwavering eye in applying the masking kit. When you see the car you can understand the detail that has gone into it.

In early October I got the car back on the road and it is looking a million bucks, this old girl still turns heads where ever she goes, fine lines and old school styling never gets out of date. Thanks to Tec at T&L Panels works we have another piece of Aussie motoring history saved. Cheers Wilko

Although there wasn’t much, the rust had to be dealt with. Small holes in the beaver panel, a few holes above the rear wheel arches and under the front windscreen, these were dealt with utmost skill with inner and outer sections receiving the same due care.
