WARP XOne of Screen Yorkshire’s key production investments is in the Sheffield-based
Warp X – the low budget film studio using digital technologies along with new
business models and release strategies. Jointly funded with UK Film Council,

Mammoth Screen returned to Yorkshire to shoot ‘Wuthering
Heights’ after fi lming ‘Lost in Austen’ in the region. Screen
Yorkshire invested in both productions through its Production
Fund creating jobs for crew, regional production spend as
well as securing positions for a number of regional trainees.
“We have a very successful and ongoing relationship with
Screen Yorkshire and the Yorkshire region, most recently with
our critically acclaimed production ‘Lost in Austen’ which was
shot and partially post produced in the region. The wonderful
diversity of landscape and locations all within a reasonable
travelling distance made Yorkshire the natural home
for fi lming our new adaptation of ‘Wuthering Heights’.”
“Without Screen Yorkshire’s investment and support, the project
would not have been possible. This, coupled with the stunning
locations on offer, meant Yorkshire was clearly the place to
base the production. Screen Yorkshire’s valuable investment and
production support along with the fantastic crew and facilities
in the region enabled us to deliver a production of which we are
extremely proud.”
“I think one of the great things about fi lming in Yorkshire is the
crew-base, thanks to Yorkshire TV and Granada over the last
20-30 years there is a really good bank of technicians. However,
the fi nance of any movie is critical and you need to fi lm where you
can get the best deal, there are many advantages of Yorkshire
but in the end the combination of it being the real place along
with a decent contribution from Screen Yorkshire and its other
support was invaluable.”
The fi lm adaptation of the cult book, ‘The Damned United’ by
David Peace, about Brian Clough’s legendary 44 days at Leeds
United in the 1970s, was one of Screen Yorkshire’s major
production investments in 2008. Produced by Left Bank
Pictures, the fi lm went on to achieve box offi ce success
and major media coverage.

“I would like to take this
opportunity to thank everyone
at Screen Yorkshire for all
their support and co-operation
during our time in North
Yorkshire. The people of York
and the surrounding areas
have not only made fi lming
‘Crusoe’ possible but also a
pleasure. It was great to be
back in Yorkshire – where the
crew are highly professional
and the locations stunning.
Screen Yorkshire’s Production
Liaison team provided us with
crew and locations support
before and during our shoot,
and helped to make our
experience in Yorkshire truly
amazing. I cannot wait
to come back.”
LUCY BASNETT-MACGUIRE // ProducerHARDY PICTURES // Channel 4 // 1066
“To take the audience back to
1066 we needed a landscape
that was as wild, epic and
varied as our story which
encompassed everything from
beach landings to forest
battles. The Lord of the Rings
had New Zealand, but we had
Yorkshire and it gave us
everything we needed and
more. We even found an
existing wooden bridge that
with minimal modifi cation
stood in for the famous
Stamford Bridge where the
Anglo Saxons defeated the
Viking invaders. Yorkshire is a
great place to fi lm, so good in
fact that we are coming back
for our next production.”
“This is the fi rst time I’ve worked in the North of England, and I
just love the unfailingly committed and talented crew, who march
back up the sodden fi eld after fi ve hours of sterling work, every
one of them smiling – and bang on time for lunch, too.”

RED RIDINGThree fi lms on different formats by three different directors
shooting at the same time throughout Yorkshire. That was the
challenge for the producers of the ‘Red Riding Trilogy’ – three
features for Channel 4 adapted from the quartet of ‘Yorkshire
Noir’ crime thrillers by David Peace. Screen Yorkshire had been
involved in the project from the start, initially optioning the rights
on the books before Revolution Films got involved and Channel 4
commissioned them. Screen Yorkshire invested £100,000 per fi lm
to secure the production for the region creating jobs for Yorkshire
crew and inward investment. The success of the fi lms means
that the investment will be recouped to be re-invested in
further productions.

way so we used lots of contemporary but brutalist, 1970’s

we used local crew and it was just a really good experience to be

Screen Yorkshire Business Investment Fund
in Sheffield-based independent games developer
Tuna Technologies towards the creation of their
new award-nominated title, Cletus Clay.
Cletus Clay is a video game made entirely
out of clay, using traditional stop frame animation,
just like Aardman’s Wallace and Gromit

GAME REPUBLIC
Game Republic is Screen Yorkshire’s network for video games
companies based in the region. It runs networking events,
a student showcase to bring industry and university students
together, brings publishers to the region and supports
international trade missions. Yorkshire and Humber has
three of the world’s top 100 games studios including Team 17
who develop the Worms franchise, Rockstar Leeds who develop
Grand Theft Auto and Sumo, developers of Virtua Tennis 2009.
Game Republic also brought the Eurogamer Expo to the region
in October 2009 so that 4000 young gamers could experience the
latest games whilst meeting the region’s companies to fi nd out
how to develop a career in the industry.
“As a Sheffi eld-based
company, it’s great that we
can be supported locally by
organisations such as Screen
Yorkshire and Game Republic.
With their help Yorkshire has
become a fantastic region for
the games industry to grow
and evolve.”

4iPYorkshire and the Humber is
one of three cornerstone
partners for 4iP, Channel 4’s
major new initiative to
encourage innovation on
digital platforms, which aims
to re-invent public service
media for the digital age. 4iP
is an innovation fund that
supports great ideas for
websites, games and mobile
services, from across the UK,
which help people improve
their lives.
Channel 4 has committed up
to £20m, with £3m of this
ring-fenced for co-investment
in Yorkshire and Humber along
with Screen Yorkshire’s £3m
matched fund from Yorkshire
Forward. Screen Yorkshire will
be managing and promoting
the fund and the region is
home to a 4iP Digital
Commissioning Manager,
Lucy Würstlin. 4iP is looking
for digital projects which take
creative risks, nurture new
talent, champion fresh
perspectives and ways of
looking at the world – all on
digital platforms.
VeryMuchSoScreen Yorkshire invested £27,250 into the feature documentary
producer VeryMuchSo so it could develop a slate of fi ve fi lms. The
award-winning company based in Sheffi eld had produced a trilogy
of fi lms about North Korea and other feature documentaries but
faced diffi culties in growing the company further and having the
resource to develop a slate of projects. The Screen Yorkshire
investment will also allow the company to investigate alternative
methods of distribution.
“BestFrontSeat’s core business is to deliver high quality video
content on-demand and to broadcast live events such as
concerts, company announcements and sports events.
The Screen Yorkshire investment was critical to us in building
our own content distribution platform which will now allow
us to gain new contracts and build our business here in Yorkshire.”

VIGILANTE
VIGILANTE“The experience of making ‘Vigilante’ was
invaluable to me as a filmmaker, and I’d like to
thank Screen Yorkshire not just for funding the
project, but also for the development, support
and encouragement they gave me throughout the
process. Thanks to them, I have had the privilege
of seeing my work screened at festivals across
the world and have picked up two awards for
the film in the process.
The challenges involved in making a short film are
only truly realised when you have a production on
the horizon, and I have learnt so much about
successful filmmaking thanks to the opportunities
afforded me by Screen Yorkshire.”
Set in the quiet and idyllic village of Hewson,
‘Vigilante’ is a dark and satirical mockumentary
that follows one member of a village group as
he sets out to eradicate crime and anti-social
behaviour and asks ultimately, to what lengths
should we and would we go to make our community
a better place? ‘Vigilante’ was commissioned under
the Screen Yorkshire Digital Shorts scheme, and
went on to win ’Best Yorkshire Short’ at Glimmer
2009, and an accolade at The Accolade Competition.

TRAINEE SCHEMES
I fi rst got in touch with Screen Yorkshire when I registered on
the crew and facilities database as an Accounts Trainee, and was
contacted by the accountant working on The Damned United.
I was hesitant about leaving my 9-5 job to take on work as a
freelancer, but with Screen Yorkshire’s help I have since worked
on three regionally-based major productions and have never
looked back.
Screen Yorkshire funded these placements as well as providing
me with help, support and guidance in the form of CV workshops,
networking events, and funding for Sage training, which I have
put into practice on my most recent job (Married, Single Other).
The team always follow my progress and give me help to keep
my career on the right path, and I am very grateful
for their continued support.

Screen Yorkshire’s investment in film education projects aims to get young
people and community groups interested in making and watching films.
Three films at Scunthorpe Young People’s Film Festival were supported
by Screen Yorkshire. Destination Steeltown is an intergenerational project
which takes a look at how life has changed for a group of Muslim elders since
they emigrated to the UK in the 60s. Young people from the Madani Youth
Organisation in Scunthorpe interviewed and filmed them in their mosque
and neighbourhood.
The second film, Triptych, follows two young serial offenders and the third
project, It’s not all Gaga, involved the Barton Youth Band.

“As always I was delighted to see how quickly young people
adopt the skills necessary to gel together on a film shoot.

“Without film education projects like these many of these young
people would never have engaged with media. This experience
helps them express themselves, gain confidence and develop
skills. In the longer term some of them may look to work in the
creative industries due to their interest being stimulated in
film-making.”

BRADFORD UNESCO
CITY OF FILM
Bradford became the world’s
fi rst UNESCO City of Film in
2009 thanks to a partnership
between Bradford Council,
the National Media Museum
and Screen Yorkshire along
with the support of the
University of Bradford and
Pace plc and in collaboration
with a range of partners from
fi lm organisations, creative
industries, commerce and
education. Bradford is now
part of the UNESCO (United

was awarded the status due
to its fi lm heritage; its
inspirational fi lm locations;
its diverse society and its
celebration of fi lm and its
commitment to sharing
understanding and enjoyment
of fi lm through the National
Media Museum and the
City’s annual fi lm festivals.
Bradford has been the location
for several iconic movies
including Billy Liar, The
Railway Children and Yanks
as well as acclaimed TV
productions such as the Red
Riding Trilogy, all of which
were set in and around the
City. Bradford now hopes
to use the status to encourage
more fi lm-makers and
enthusiasts to come to
Bradford; build Bradford’s
local and international profi le
and give the community
and visitors an exciting and
inspiring place to enjoy fi lm;
and enhance people’s
fi lm-making knowledge and
develop their fi lm-making
potential.
“This is superb news for
Bradford and is testimony to
the City’s dedication to the fi lm

Hundreds of fi lms – over
50 hours worth of footage
– showing life in Yorkshire
and Humber over the last
century is now available online
through a new website created
by the Yorkshire Film Archive.
The carefully selected fi lms
were chosen through a

audiences across the region.
Whether it is Queen Victoria
visiting Sheffi eld in 1897, a

in Filey in the 1950s, or footage
of the region’s great industries,
such as textiles, steel,

In addition to the fi lms
themselves, the website
contains detailed cataloguing
and contextual information,
and a dedicated Learning Zone
where teachers can download
