Welcome to This Is The Week That Is!

This is our eighth This Is The Week… and every year, just when I think there is nothing more to write about, our political leaders give us fresh material. And every year the artistic team becomes more comfortable with the chaos of creating a show that has to be written at the last possible minute so that it stays current.

The first day of rehearsal, there is an outline but no script. Not only do the actors not know what they’re going to say, the costume, prop, and video designers have no idea what they will need to build. And even after scenes are written, things change so quickly.

I remember sitting around the writers table our first year — we had just finished writing a hilarious scene about then-Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, that we were thinking would open the second act. Just then, Kate Tejada, our Managing Director, poked her head in and said, “Donald Rumsfeld just announced that he is resigning!” We picked up our scene and ripped it to shreds. And one of the most difficult phone calls I ever had to make was to a costume designer to tell her that we were cutting the scene with the Octopus and the Dancing Stem Cell (don’t ask) and replacing it with a scene featuring famous Jews and I needed Barbra Streisand, Woody Allen, Sammy Davis Jr. and Tevye costumes by the next day.

The people who make This Is The Week…happen are fearless. They are also some of the finest people I know. This past year we lost one of those fearless spirits, our colleague and friend Reuben Mitchell, who for the past two years has played Obama, Flava Flav, a righteous weatherman and a dancing hot dog among many other roles.

The unpredictability of our world means that the process of creating This Is The Week… will always be about the ability to adjust no matter what. For me, however, it is also about transforming difficult, ugly, frustrating, and sometimes incredibly sad situations into moments of joy. Thank you for being here.

The world needs more comedy.

This is for Reuben.
