Westronglybelieveinthetask-basedlearningsystem. Itstandsuponthreemainpillars:- Learningbydoing:thestudentdoesnotfinishinthecontentofthesubject,he

needsto“do”somethingpracticalandusefulwithittomakesenseinthelearningprocess,toreallymasterit.

- Interactionwiththestudentsandfeedback:theinteractiondoesnotonlytakeplaceinthevirtualclassroom,butwithinandthroughthetasksubmissionandcorrectionitself,andthisiswherethefeedbackhasmostsense.The“trueanswer”isnotgiveninthefirstround.Onthecontrary,theindicationsgiveninthecorrectionallow/helpthestudentrethinktheissueandfindthe“Trueanswer”bythemselves.Thisisthebestwaytolearnsomethinganddonotforgetitever!

- Flexibility:thisrefersnotonlytotheperiodoftheyearinwhichtheycansubmitthetasks(whichisopenalongthewholecourseyear)butalsotothekindoftasksthestudentshavetodo.

Hereisanexampleofthefeedback thestudentsreceive.ThisisanEnglishtaskandwecanseethesystemtheyhavetocorrectwithoutprovidingthecorrectanswers.AttheIEDA,studentsareinvitedtosubmitandresubmitasmuchasneededtolearnfromtheirmistakes.Studentsworkonthemistakesteachersshowandexplain,withoutprovidingthesolutions.Let’s seeanexample:theEnglishdepartmentusesakeyofcolours toshowthestudentswhatkindofmistakesthereareintheassignment:redisforspelling,blueisforvocabulary,etc.Theyalsoaddnotestoexplainthemistakesifneeded.Thus,thestudentsknowwhereandwhatkindofmistakesthereareintheirassignment,buttheyhavetoworkonthesolution.

- TheuseofICTtoolsbecausetheyallowusworkonthebasicskills,goingastepfurtherfromthecontent.Theyalsoprovidethenecessaryspaceforcollaborativework–thisbecomesveryrelevantifwetakeintoaccountthatstudentsarefarfromeachother,notphysicallysittinginthesameschoolandclassroom-.Andfinallybutnotlessimportant,theyallowthevisibilityofthestudents’production,andthismaybeveryencouraging.

- Creativityisseenasananti-plagiarismtool,inthesensethatthemoreopenthetaskis,thelessprobableitwillbetocopy/pasted fromthecontentontheInternet.Therequirementofcreativityisbecauseithelpscontextualizingbothontheside ofthestudentandtheteacherasthecreatorofthetasks.Onthestudentsside creativityallowsthepersonalenrichmentbecauseithelpsthestudentexpresshimselfwithsomeliberty;ontheteachersside,itisimportantthatthetaskisdesignedinawaythatisappealingspecificallyforourtypeofstudents(again,knowingWHOourstudentsare,seeexampleinnextslides).

Thelast characteristicofourtasksistheimportanceoftheassessmentsection,becauseitisstatedfromtheverybeginningofthetask,sothatthestudentsaretoldwhatandhowthetaskwillbeassessed.AtthebeginningoftheIEDA,weworkedmorewiththeobjectives,butweknowthattalkingabouttheevaluationcriteriaisclearerforthestudents.

Theassessmentisusuallyexpressedinrubrics,andthisallowsteacherscreateroutesoflearning.Let’s thinkofataskinwhichthestudentshavetocreateapresentation;inthetaskthestudentsareproposedtouseanonlinetoolforpresentationswithaudio,buttheyarealsoofferedthepossibilityofusinganofflineone.Therubricalsotakesintoaccountotherpoorerpossibilities–likecreatingapresentationwithouttheaudio,orjustadocumentwithpicturesinit.Allthesepossibilitiesareofferedbymeansoftherubric,withtheircorrespondingassessmentweightinthefinalresult.

Finally,theteacherscanseethestudent’sevolutionalongtheyearthankstothisrubricwhencheckingwhetherastudentchoosesmorecomplexpossibilitiesoftheserubricsattheendofthecourseyear.
