PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome back to all our Riverbank families and a special warm welcome to those students and their families who are joining our school community. We hope you enjoy a long and happy association with our school. We take pride in setting high expectations of our students. They are the very centre of our structured learning environment, which offers exceptional opportunities for all. Our school is focused on the personal success and wellbeing of every student, enabling them to grow into respectful, responsible and successful students who build strong relationships. At Riverbank Public School, we strive to build a safe, inclusive and secure learning environment. Our Restorative Practice approach provides a framework for building respectful relationships, effective communication, personal and social responsibility and a sense of belonging. Students, staff, parents and community members are encouraged to participate in all aspects of school life. Parents are valued as true partners in the education of their children, contributing their initiative, energy, time and expertise to the school. At Riverbank, all students have the opportunity to attain knowledge, skills, values and attitudes enabling them to be reflective, self-sufficient and self-motivated lifelong learners. Riverbank is a large school and continues to grow daily. Our school has grown from 290 students in 2015 to 1100 in 2018. This year we have formed 42 mainstream classes and 3 support classes for students with special needs. Out of the 42 mainstream classes, we have 38 straight grade classes and 4 composite classes. We have formed the following classes:
• 10 Early Stage 1 - Kindergarten • 14 Stage 1 - Years 1 and 2 • 10 Stage 2 - Years 3 and 4 • 8 Stage 3 - Years 5 and 6

SCHOOL NEWSLETTER • 7 February 2018• TERM 1 WEEK 2 This is how we Learn and Live!
The class names, teachers and a school map have been included in this newsletter and our 2018 School Information Booklet is now available on our school website. Middle Years - Years 5 & 6 (Stage 3) are part of an innovative Middle Years program with The Ponds High School. Stage 3 students will be based in eight demountable classrooms in the high school, allowing the learning environment and programs to cater for students maturing at different rates. Teachers from Riverbank and The Ponds High School undertake collaborative planning with an explicit and effective focus on Middle Years students and their transition to secondary school. School Invoices - 2018 school invoices will be sent out each term. Term 1 invoice will be sent home next week. To ensure your child attends the Swimming Carnival (Years 3-6 and Year 2 students turning 8 this year); please pay your Term 1 school fees as soon as possible. Opportunities for all - At Riverbank, students have a wonderful opportunity to participate in weekly Chess, Dance, Choir, Band, Music, Drama, ICT, Debating and PSSA sport programs. 2018 School Calendar - I have included the 2018 Term 1 Calendar in this newsletter which highlights key events throughout the term. Dates may sometimes vary, and new events will be added. The complete calendar is available on the school’s website. Meet the Teacher information evening sessions will be held on Monday 19, Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 February. All sessions will commence in the school hall and these sessions are for parents only. Individual student learning will be discussed at parent - teacher interviews in Week 10. School Priorities - I look forward to working with the school’s talented teachers, support staff and with our school community with the implementation of our priority areas of focus, being Kindergarten and Stage 1 Language, Learning and Literacy (L3) program, visible learning goals, Targeting Early Numeracy and a whole school focus on enhancing reading and writing skills. Our main priority is to foster a learning culture that ensures all students reach their full potential to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens.

SCHOOL NEWSLETTER • 7 February 2018• TERM 1 WEEK 2 This is how we Learn and Live!
Communication - Newsletters are published during even weeks and daily updates are sent out through our school app. Our Facebook page celebrates our weekly achievements. Morning Lines - Kindergarten students are to be taken directly to their classes of a morning and can be collected from their classrooms of an afternoon. Years 1 & 2 students will line up under the covered area near our school hall from 8.55am and their teachers will inform you where you collect your child of an afternoon. Parents are requested not to pick up their children from the upstairs classrooms. Years 3 & 4 students line up on the basketball court of a morning and afternoon. Years 5 & 6 students line up near the entrance to our bus bay. We request parents leave the school grounds as quickly as possible in the morning. Our school gates are closed at 9.15am and reopened at 2.30pm. There is a single gate entry should you require access throughout the school day. Teachers are on duty in the playground from 8.30am to 9.00am every morning. Entering and Leaving the School - Due to the installation of classrooms in our school carpark, staff now use the high school carpark, located on Wentworth Street. For safety reasons parents are NOT permitted to use this carpark for ANY reason, except those who have sought special permission from the school. Please DO NOT use the carpark as a thoroughfare to enter or leave the school or drop students off in the morning and pick-up students in the afternoon. Late Drop off and Early Pick Up - If you are picking up your child early, you must go to the front office and sign them out before you collect your child from the classroom. If a student is late coming to school, you must sign them in at the front office before they go to class. The school’s Kiss and Ride area is within the “No Parking” zone. You are allowed to stop your vehicle only to set down or pick up passengers. Your vehicle must not stop for more than 2 minutes. The driver must not be more than 3 metres from the vehicle. Highway patrol will be regularly patrolling our perimeter. The school has applied for a school crossing supervisor. Thank you for ensuring the safety of all of our students when entering and leaving the premises. Welcome Picnic - The staff and I look forward to seeing you at our Welcome Picnic on Friday 16
February from 5pm - 7pm in the school grounds. Please bring along a picnic and the P&C will be selling cool refreshments.

Restorative Practices Restorative Practices form the relational basis for Quality Teaching and Learning at Riverbank Public School. Our Restorative Practice Framework, because of its explicit nature, offers a common language and practice capable of fostering healthy relationships. Student achievement is enhanced through Restorative values being embedded as a way of being and learning together. Our approach fosters individual responsibility and helps develop empathy. Inappropriate behaviour or choices and mistakes can be viewed as an opportunity for insight, learning and development in both the academic and social domains. The explicit framework is inextricably linked to the Quality Teaching Framework and includes the following sets of questions to be asked by children, teachers and parents. When Things Go Wrong…..When Someone Has Been Hurt • What happened? • What were you thinking of at the time? • What have you thought about since? • Who has been affected by what you have done? In what way? • What do you think you may do to make things right? • What did you think when you realised what happened? • What impact has this incident had on you and others? • What has been the hardest thing for you? • What do you think needs to happen to make things right?
The process is empowering as it takes students from the past to the present and gives them hope for the future. It empowers them to make things right and heal any harm that has been done. A restorative classroom setting is one that values dialogue through an inclusive approach where everyone expects to be heard and through this participatory process, students develop the capacity to learn that emotions are an important and legitimate expression of healthy dialogue. This process helps students to deal with conflict, tensions and difference in respectful ways that engender trust and foster healthy relationships.

School Motto The school’s motto, ‘Learning to Live, Living to Learn’, reinforces a broad and enriching curriculum, which not only focuses on the development of literacy and numeracy skills but also on the social and emotional wellbeing of the students whilst respecting a culturally diverse community. Riverbank Public School Code of Behaviour • We share the voice space by listening actively to others and expressing ourselves confidently. • We follow instructions by being in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing. • We use build-ups by saying encouraging, affirming things to others. • We keep our hands, feet and objects to ourselves so that everyone is safe. • We own our own behaviour because we choose how we behave. Our Help Increase the Peace (HIP) Keys – School Rules: Our school values will incorporate the ‘Help Increase the Peace Keys’ to promote a harmonious, nurturing and challenging living and learning environment.
The HIP program offers a whole school approach to building relationships through communication, co-operation, trust building and conflict resolution.
