Both nationally and internationally, Hofstra is increasingly recognized as a university on the rise. Started in1935 with one building, Hofstra has grown to become a leader in terms of teaching excellence, scholarship,technology, academic resources, and programs offered. The Hofstra community is driven, vibrant and energetic,helping students find and focus their strengths to prepare them for successful futures.

Hofstra University includes Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Frank G. Zarb School of Business,School of Communication, School of Education and Allied Human Services, Hofstra Law School, HonorsCollege, New College, School for University Studies and Hofstra University Continuing Education. HonorsCollege is a program for high-achieving students; New College (a division of Hofstra College of Liberal Artsand Sciences) offers interdisciplinary study and innovative block scheduling; and School for UniversityStudies was developed for students with academic challenges. Hofstra University recently joined with NorthShore-LIJ Health System in announcing a historic agreement to establish a new medical school on the Hofstracampus. The new school will be the first traditional all opathic medical school in Nassau County and thefirst new traditional medical school in New York state since 1963.

Within these schools are many innovative programs designed to help students succeed in the professionalworld. These include the Legal Education Accelerated Program, a program that allows students to earn botha B.A. and a J.D. in six years; new undergraduate majors in Chinese, Chinese studies and women’s studies;and new graduate degree programs in documentary studies, education, business and other areas.

Our student body is geographically, ethnically and culturally diverse andof increasingly high caliber. Students attending Hofstra come from 51states and territories and 65 countries. The SAT scores and averageGPAs of incoming students have increased in the past six years, withSAT scores rising more than 100 points to 1179, and GPAs rising morethan four tenths of a point to 3.37 between 2001 and 2007. Half thefirst-year class entering in fall 2007 came from outside New York state.

To ensure that Hofstra will be able to continue to expand its academicprograms and build its reputation, the University more than doubled itsendowment in the last six years, to more than $200 million. The University’sambitious $100 million capital campaign, launched in 2006, has alreadyexceeded its goal.

In the fall of 2007, PresidentStuart Rabinowitz made twohistoric announcements: in

October he announced thatHofstra University, in partnership

with North Shore-LIJ HealthSystem, planned to establishthe nation’s newest school of

medicine. In November heannounced that the Commission

on Presidential Debates hadchosen Hofstra as the site of

the third and final presidentialdebate of the 2008 election.

Hofstra University’s faculty is one of its greatest resources. Our faculty includes Guggenheim Fellows and Fulbrightscholars, award-winning scientists, and leaders in business and education. Ninety percent of Hofstra’s full-timefaculty hold the highest degrees in their fields.

Yet they are as passionate about teaching as they are about research.All our classes are led by professors. And we keep our classes small,allowing professors to emphasize interaction, critical thinking and analysis.With a student-faculty ratio of 14-to-1 and an average undergraduateclass size of 22, students can be assured that they will get the personalattention they need.

Hofstra extends learning beyond the classroom through a variety ofstudy abroad opportunities. These faculty-led programs allow studentsto explore locales in Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and Central America.The European Odyssey, a unique study abroad experience, takes studentson a semester-long trip across Europe to study the history, politics andculture of the continent in the context of the developing European Union.

Meena Bose, Ph.D., Peter S. Kalikow Chair in Presidential Studiesand professor of political science, represented the American PoliticalScience Association on the U.S. Department of State’s HistoricalAdvisory Committee.

Alafair S. Burke, J.D., professor of law, is an expert on prosecutorialdecision making, community policing and nonpunitive responses tocrime, and a well-known legal and trial commentator for the media.She is former deputy district attorney in Portland, Oregon.

Julie Byrne, Ph.D., Monsignor Thomas J. Hartman Endowed Chair inCatholic Studies and associate professor of religion, is author of theacclaimed book O God of Players: The Story of the Immaculata MightyMacs.

Sybil DelGaudio, Ph.D., dean of the School of Communication andprofessor of radio, television and film, received an Emmy Award forAnimated Women.

Nora V. Demleitner, J.D., LL.M., dean of Hofstra Law School, clerkedfor the Hon. Samuel A. Alito, Jr., then a member of the U.S. Court ofAppeals for the Third Circuit, and testified before the U.S. Senate onbehalf of Justice Alito’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. She islead author of Sentencing Law and Policy.

Neil Donahue, Ph.D., associate dean of Honors College and professor ofcomparative literature and languages, has been the recipient of grantsand fellowships from the Fulbright Program, the National Endowmentfor the Humanities and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Markus Dressler, Ph.D., assistant professor of religion, was the recipientof a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship.

Carolyn Dudek, Ph.D., associate professor of political science, wasawarded two Fulbright Fellowships.

Laurie Fendrich, M.F.A., professor of fine arts, is an abstract artistand a regular contributor to The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Eric Freedman, M.A., J.D., Maurice A. Deane Distinguished Professorof Constitutional Law at Hofstra Law School, has representedGuantanamo Bay detainees, and in 2004 received the DybwadHumanitarian Award of the American Association on Mental Retardationfor his work in exonerating an innocent Virginia death row inmate.

Monroe Freedman, LL.B., LL.M., professor of law and former deanof Hofstra Law School, received the Michael Franck Award, the AmericanBar Association’s highest award for professionalism, in recognition of“a lifetime of original and influential scholarship in the field oflawyers’ ethics.”

Mitchell Gans, J.D., ‘71, ‘74, Steven A. Horowitz DistinguishedProfessor of Law at Hofstra Law School, twice won an American BarAssociation award for article of the year. He provides policy andstrategic assistance to the IRS on transfer and income tax issues.

Margaret Hunter, Ph.D., associate professor of engineering, receiveda National Science Foundation grant to modify existing curricula toattract more women to technical studies.

John Impagliazzo, Ph.D., professor of computer science, received alifetime service award from the Association for Computing Machinery,Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education.

Laurie Shepherd Johnson, Ph.D., ‘85, professor and graduate programdirector in the department of counseling, research, special educationand rehabilitation, was the recipient of a Fulbright grant to develop aconflict and cooperation curriculum for Cyprus.

Eric Lane, J.D., professor of law, is co-author of the bestselling bookThe Genius of America: How the Constitution Saved Our Country – andWhy It Can Again.

Robert Leonard, Ph.D., professor of comparative literature and languages,is a Fulbright alumnus and one of the world’s leading forensic linguisticsexperts.

Phillis Levin, M.A., professor of English, has been the recipient of aFulbright Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship and a NationalEndowment for the Arts Fellowship.

Gregory Levine, Ph.D., professor of physics and astronomy, was a KavliInstitute for Theoretical Physics Scholar.

Phillip Lopate, Ph.D., professor of English and The John CranfordAdams Chair in the Humanities, is a Fellow of the AmericanAcademy of Arts and Sciences.

Dennis Mazzocco, Ph.D., associate professor of radio, television andfilm, has won nine Emmy Awards and three Cine Gold Awards.

Martha McPhee, M.F.A., assistant professor of English, is the authorof several books, including Gorgeous Lies, which was nominated for aNational Book Award.

Lisa Merrill, Ph.D., professor of speech communication, rhetoric andperformance studies, was the recipient of a National Endowment forthe Humanities Fellowship.

Christine Noschese, M.A., assistant professor of radio, television andfilm, has produced and directed numerous films, including Keep onSteppin’, which won the Best Short Film Award at the NewburyportDocumentary Film Festival.

Norman I. Silber, J.D., professor of law, is a director of ConsumersUnion and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.

Alan Singer, Ph.D., professor of curriculum and teaching, and Mary Carter, M.A., adjunct assistant professor of curriculum andteaching, received the National Council for the Social Studies 2005Program of Excellence Award for their slavery curriculum.

Matthew Sonfield, Ph.D., professor of management, entrepreneurshipand general business and The Robert F. Dall Distinguished Professorin Business, is a Fellow of the Small Business Institute.

With New York City just a short ride by train or car, students can takeadvantage of the many internship possibilities the city offers, gainingvaluable on-the-job experience in areas such as finance, business,media, advertising and entertainment. Students can also experiencethe city’s many cultural riches. Broadway shows, The MetropolitanMuseum of Art, Madison Square Garden, Chinatown and Little Italy,and Wall Street all are within easy reach of the Hofstra campus.

State-of-the-Art FacilitiesHofstra’s 112 buildings include state-of-the-art teaching facilities, 37 residence halls, and libraries that contain1.2 million print volumes and provide 24/7 electronic access to more than 50,000 journals and electronic books.C.V. Starr Hall, home to the Zarb School of Business, features the Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room, one of themost advanced academic trading rooms in the country, with 34 Bloomberg Professional terminals that allowstudents to access the same data, analytics and software used by finance professionals. Dempster Hall, whichhouses most of the School of Communication, contains one of the largest noncommercial broadcast facilities inthe Northeast as well as a cutting-edge converged newsroom and multimedia classroom. In addition, there aresix theaters, including a new black-box theater, and an accredited museum. The Hofstra University Museumcoordinates about 12 exhibitions annually and offers an extensive collection of outdoor sculpture, with morethan 60 pieces.

Recreational and athletic facilities include an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a full recreation center, anindoor sports and entertainment arena, and well-maintained athletic fields.

Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of theAmerican Presidency

Hofstra is one of the few institutions in the countrywith a unique focus on the American presidency. Throughannual conferences and a lecture series featuring leadingscholars on the subject, this center promotes continuingresearch on issues related to the American presidency.

Center for Civic Engagement

This center was formed based on the belief that informedstudents are more likely to participate in the democraticprocess. Through debates, exhibits and activities, itencourages students to participate as citizens in theircampus, local, state, national and global communities.

The National Center for Suburban Studies

This nonpartisan research institution promotes theobjective, academically rigorous study of suburbia’sproblems, as well as its promise. It focuses on a broadrange of issues, from local and national perspectives,and hosts conferences on those issues.

Institute for the Development of Education in theAdvanced Sciences

The Institute for the Development of Education in theAdvanced Sciences (IDEAS), based within the Schoolof Education and Allied Human Services, focuses oncutting-edge issues in science and technology for thegeneral public, local public and private school teachersand administrators, and college educators.

Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center

This center supports high-quality educational andpractical experiences for Hofstra University students,and provides services to Hofstra University employeesand the community. It includes four clinics and a fullylicensed early childhood program.

Long Island Studies Institute

A cooperative endeavor of Hofstra University and NassauCounty, this institute is a major center for the study ofLong Island local and regional history. Its collectionsrepresent a rich repository for local history research.

Wilbur F. Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies

This new, interdisciplinary center brings the resourcesof Hofstra Law School, the Frank G. Zarb School ofBusiness and the Institute of Real Estate to bear on thecomplex issues facing the real estate industry. The centerprovides real estate professionals, municipal officials,developers and the public with information, analysisand a forum for discussion.

Institute of Real Estate

This institute promotes professionalism and serves asa trusted source for real estate education, mentoringand networking for the real estate industry throughconferences, educational programs and publications.

Institute for Health Law and Policy

Hofstra Law School’s Institute for Health Law and Policywas designed to meet the need for education and trainingof attorneys in the rapidly expanding field of health law,offer instruction for health care professionals who areencountering increasingly complicated laws affectingthe delivery of health care, and provide a center ofexcellence for the study and formulation of healthcare policy.

A Vibrant Campus Life

Hofstra offers more than 170 student clubs and organizations, including about 30 fraternities and sororities, 18varsity sports, and more than 500 cultural events each year. Students can choose from organizations as diverseas Film Club, Danceworks, and Hofstra University Gamers.

Hofstra’s NCAA Division I athletic program includes baseball, football, wrestling, softball, volleyball, field hockey,and men’s and women’s basketball, lacrosse, cross-country, golf, soccer and tennis. Students who are not DivisionI athletes can join the student section “Lion’s Den” or participate with more than 25 percent of our students innumerous intramural sports.

Students can also attend debates, lectures and readings by the many scholars, business leaders, writers and celebritieswho visit campus each year. Popular series and events include “Great Writers, Great Readings,” the Day of Dialogue,and distinguished faculty lectures. The University also hosts four annual festivals – the Shakespeare Festival,Dutch Festival, Irish Festival and Italian Experience Festival – and a flower and garden show, which are opento the public.

Hofstra University was chosen by the Commission on Presidential Debatesto be the site of the final 2008 Presidential Debate, scheduled forOctober 15, 2008. To maximize the unique opportunities a presidentialdebate provides, Hofstra launched Educate ’08, a comprehensive seriesof conferences, events and lectures about the election, politics andpresidential history. This educational initiative has brought to ourcampus many of the nation’s leading scholars, journalists and politicalcommentators, including Maureen Dowd and William Kristol, MaryMatalin and James Carville, David Gergen and Paul Krugman.

Other recent visitors to campus include former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft; Salman Rushdie, author ofthe controversial book The Satanic Verses; John M. Geddes, managing editor of The New York Times; and ScottRitter, former U.N. chief weapons inspector.
