Our Parish Council is preparing a Neighbourhood Plan for the Sherington parish. The survey results will provide the foundation of our plan so it is very important that your household participates.

What is a Neighbourhood Plan? The Localism Act 2011 introduced Neighbourhood planning. A Neighbourhood Plan allows local people to influence, for 15 years, the planning and development of the area in which they live and work and should: • Develop a shared vision for a village (or town);• Choose where homes, shops, offices and other development should be built;• Influence how much housing should be built, and of what type;• Identify and protect important local green spaces or other treasured assets.

Once approved, the plan will have legal force in setting out what development is acceptable in our parish and for what reasons. Developers and local authority planners will have to take notice of it. Without a Neighbourhood Plan, we will have little control over any development that takes place and are likely to receive less community funds from those developments.

SHERINGTON NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN SURVEY#1

We can influence development. Our Neighbourhood Plan must comply with Milton Keynes Council’s Local Plan and the government’s wider policy of sustainable development. Some new housing will have to be built in Sherington. A Neighbourhood Plan will help us ensure that this housing is suitable for the parish and meets the needs of our area. It will identify the facilities and services required to meet the demands that any new housing will make upon our community.

What do you need to do next to build our Neighbourhood Plan? Please complete the survey as fully and thoughtfully as you can and return it to us as detailed at the end of this booklet. We encourage younger people to take part, as often their views are not heard.

If you require further informationIf you have questions about the survey or wider Neighbourhood Plan process, one of the Sherington Parish Councillors would be pleased to talk to you. You can visit the Sherington Neighbourhood Plan Web site. http://www.sherington.org.uk/nplan.htm

If required, you can print off additional copies from the Website

PART 1. ABOUT YOU

What is sustainable development?Summarising the Government’s National Planning Policy Framework as:-

ENVIRONMENTAL: protecting and enhancing our natural and historic environment by improving biodiversity, using natural resources prudently & responding to climate change.

SOCIAL: supporting strong vibrant and healthy communities by meeting present and future housing needs and by providing a built environment and local services that support the community’s health, social and cultural wellbeing.

ECONOMIC: building a strong economy, making sufficient land available in ways that support growth by innovation by identifying and coordinating infrastructure.

UK planning policy requires a presumption in favour of sustainable development, meaning Milton Keynes Council will approve without delay any planning applications considered sustainable unless an approved Neighbourhood Plan specifies otherwise.

In order to get the best outcome for Sherington Parish, our Neighbourhood Plan must take the principles of sustainable development and apply them to the requirements of the people who live and work in Sherington Parish.
