by Stacy C.http://prezi.com/cxsutziasbch/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy&rc=ex0share
Mixed messages marinate in the mind./clues as to what’s inside lie in a books’ binding/
where falsities and truths are ripe for the finding./art lovers of literature decry/
sales are the reason why/covers sometimes speak the truth/
yet other...times...lie.

The faces of readers are different than in the past. Books with diversity and gender equity have not caught up with the reading clientele.
1985 - 18 ‘multicultural’ books published2011 - of the 5,000 published, 300 considered to have ‘diversity’
“For quite a few years we have been commenting on how few books by and about people of color are published in the United States in relation to the overall number of books produced annually. As the population of the United States continues to not only increase, but become more diverse, the output of publishing houses has not been a mirror of society, at least in terms of the numbers.

Boys are the main character in a book twice as often as
girls.
Boys won’t read a book if a girl is the main character….
Is it morally wrong
to promote books to one gender
or another?
Society now?

Caldecott adjective searchF = Beautiful, frightened and worthM = Big, horrible and fierce
Newbery Award - 3:1 male heroes
Can you think of benefits of
gender-specific materials…?
How this affects children... a child has no strong identity - more vulnerablechildren need to identify with characters in a book...or how important are they? Am I on the shelf?
Let Toys Be Toys CampaignLet Books be Books
13 retailers last year dropped the BOYS/GIRLS from toysworking with publishers too
Remember...media, advertising, video games, presentations, everything in our culture
A classroom book shelf should be representative of both genders and all cultures.
Be critical of all materials in your classroom.
Remember your favorite…..?
Look for minorities in books and authors.
Look for non-stereotypical situations and characters.
What’s in a picture? How important are book covers?
Cover Art Matters!- first impression- sells the story
- sets expectations
However, may not be true to the story inside…
1st edition cover of ‘Micah”
“I’m undecided, stuck somewhere in between….half
black, half white…”
Readers were outraged.
