Welcome to GMag the offi cial magazine of Geelong’s leading philanthropic organisation – Give Where You Live!

Read on to discover how your donations are helping Give Where You Live make a difference to the lives of so many in our region during their time of need and how you can get involved with Give Where You Live in 2013.

Welcome to the fi rst edition of GMag for 2013.

This fi rst edition of the year is supported by long-term Platinum Partner, Shell, and contains news on our upcoming events, some of the amazing work that our Community Partners undertake in the region, as well as other Give Where You Live news.

2013 will be an exciting year for Give Where You Live. One of our priorities will be to continue to develop our Grant Making Strategy to ensure that we are giving grants in the most effi cient,

effective and strategic way. As part of this work we have been reviewing a relatively new method of solving complex social issues called ‘Collective Impact’. Collective Impact has been developed in the United States and has been used by a number of foundations to achieve some extraordinary results in addressing some deep-seated community issues. It ensures a collaborative approach from many participating organisations that come together with a collective goal. While the goal may be a shared one, individual organisations play their own roles in achieving the collective ambition. We are working hard on developing such a model in an area of great need in the region and we are looking forward to working with our Community Partners on this project.

October 2013 will see another major event come to Geelong, the Australian Masters Games. Give Where You Live are very proud to have been selected as the offi cial Community Partner to the Games. With over 8,000 participants competing in 57 sports at over 70 venues, it will be a major event for the region. It is expected that The Games will provide a boost of $12.5 million to the local Geelong economy at a time when many businesses are experiencing some challenges. I would encourage everyone to support The Games either through spectating, attending the events or even better, participating! Anyone over 30 is eligible and with 57 sports on offer there is something for everyone.

Once again, thank you for all of your continued support. We of course will continue to hold many fundraising events throughout the year; the Mayday Appeal will again run in May and of course Feed Geelong in October. If you are able, please consider contributing to Give Where You Live in 2013 and we will ensure that your support will help others in your local community – Geelong.

A major local issue: education disadvantage Fact - the G21 region has a significantly lower proportion (36%) of people (15 years and over) who have completed year 12 or equivalent compared to the Victorian average of 44%.*

In our January 2011 to June 2012 Grant Allocations, Give Where You Live allocated approximately 30% of total allocations (over $720,000) assisting those experiencing education disadvantage.

Give Where You Live, through our Community Partners, currently provides support for over 2,500 children and young people, providing specialised and targeted programs aimed at overcoming educational disadvantage for early years, long term retention and education outcomes in high needs areas in the Geelong Region. Here is a selection of some of the wonderful programs currently being undertaken by Give Where You Live Community Partners.* G21 Health & Wellbeing Profile 2009

YOUR DONATIONS AT WORK

The Smith Family Learning for Life SponsorshipsThe Smith Family’s Learning for Life Sponsorships Program in the Geelong region is delivered to young people in need, prioritising the communities of Norlane and Corio.

The program assists low income families and their children through the various stages of education, connecting them with learning opportunities and supporting relationships

so they can build better futures for themselves.

Through your donations Give Where You Live was able to provide $40,000 in Grant Allocations to The Smith Family to support the operating and delivery costs to help build brighter future for disadvantaged youths.

MacKillop Family ServicesMacKillop Family Services is one of the largest providers of specialist support services to vulnerable and disadvantaged children, young people and their families in the Geelong region. MacKillop exists to help children and young people at risk by providing them support, security and stability. Each young person is protected, nurtured and given the chance to build a bright future through their many programs.

MacKillop Specialist School, part of MacKillop Education, is a flexible educational setting for young people aged 5-16 years who have a range of social and emotional difficulties particularly as a result of experiencing trauma. The program aims to engage students by using education as a pathway out of poverty, developing programs to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Give Where You Live provided a Grant Allocation of $60,000 in the last Grant Allocation round for special needs and IT equipment to increase access to technology in the classroom. Technological aids such as iPads and smart boards have been introduced to engage and develop the skills of ‘hard to reach’ students.

CatholicCare and Give Where You Live helping refugees settle into our community ‘Ali’ is an 18 year old Afghani male who, as the remaining male family member, was compelled to leave his mother and two sisters to seek asylum in Australia, following the Taliban murder of his father and elder brother. He is currently enrolled at North Geelong Secondary College and has now engaged with CatholicCare’s Refugee Counselling Program to gain support and assistance with deep levels of trauma, grief and anxiety. Despite this grim reality, Ali continues to attend school, study hard and focus on positive solutions to dealing with his grief and anxiety. His dream is to reunite with his family. He has gained tremendous support from this program and is deeply grateful for all that he has been offered.

“It is a privilege to be able to assist such worthy people as Ali. Give Where You Live, through your generous donations, has assisted CatholicCare to help young refugees in their resettlement journeys” said CatholicCare Project Workers.

Innovation!! DAL is an employment and training organisation for young people with an intellectual disability. In 2012-2013 Give Where You Live partnered with the successful Corio Bay Innovators Dial-A-Lunch participants by providing $10,000 to respond to needs of young people with an intellectual disability who have expressed concern about their weight gain. A supervised weekly program is providing increased physical activities and responding to 25 participants seeking advice on healthy eating options. The program is proving very popular and the participants are really enjoying it, which emphasizes the fact that if given choice and input into the program then it is usually successful.

Life Education - GeelongLife Education Victoria is a community based, independent organisation at the front line of positive and preventative drug and health education. Along with mascot Harold the giraffe, Life Education is helping young people make informed decisions about drugs and their health.

Life Education - Geelong has been promoting its message of Drug Education

and Healthy Lifestyle in local schools for over twenty years. Give Where You Live supported the Life Education program through a Grant Allocation of $9,500 over the last financial period to ensure disadvantaged students in Geelong primary schools are able to attend the program.

Workplace Giving is not about people giving a lot - it’s about a lot of people giving something.

Commencing in 1954 Give Where You Live’s Workplace Giving Program has been operating for nearly 60 years, and accounts for approximately 4% of Australia’s total workplace giving making Geelong the country’s workplace giving capital, reinforcing the generosity of Geelong’s population in helping those in need in our community.

This financial year is our MILLION DOLLAR year and we’re on track to reach our goal.

We are thrilled to report that we have hit our half way mark of this year’s program and have received 50% of our $1 million target.

We need you to get on board and help us make it happen. If you haven’t already signed up for Workplace Giving or you are able to increase your giving - even if it’s only by $1 or $2 a week, please contact Leigh Johnston on 5229 4364 or email [email protected]

Workplace Giving OUR MILLION DOLLAR YEAR!

Geelong Mayor, Keith Fagg Workplace Giving Ambassador

Give Where You Live is delighted and extremely appreciative of Geelong Mayor, Keith Fagg’s generosity, in that he has chosen Give Where You Live as his Workplace Giving charity of choice.

Workplace Giving is a personal commitment that Keith, along with hundreds of Geelong workers, undertake with every pay and it says so much about their personal values and generosity. We have hundreds of people giving $3, $5 or $10 with every pay.

Keith’s donation, of half of the Mayoral salary, is a substantial one, making the Mayor, Give Where You Live’s largest Workplace Giving contributor and will go a long way to help those suffering from disadvantage in the Geelong community.

If you or your workplace would like to join the Mayor and commence or add to your current Workplace Giving, please contact Leigh Johnston on 5229 4364 or [email protected]

In the 11 years from 1999, there has been an 82% increase in the number of family violence incidents reported to Victoria Police*

As a specialist domestic violence crisis service, Zena Women’s Service supports women and their dependent children escaping family violence.

From June 2011-June 2012 Zena Women’s Service received over 1350 referrals - more than double the number received in the previous year. To assist this growing number of vulnerable women and children in our community, Give Where You Live, through your donations, has funded a second intake worker for 2012-2013. Without the support of this second intake worker, the organisation would struggle to support this huge increase in referrals which are anticipated to increase significantly again in 2013.

Christine Shaw from People @ Work began her involvement with Give Where You Live as a Loaned Executive, jumping at the chance to join the Allocations Panel in 2009 and has been involved in every allocation round since.

Christine said “volunteering for Give Where You Live, is a great way to network with people from various Geelong organisations, but you also get a personal insight into the work that they and their Community Partners

undertake and just how much they need support. It really opened my eyes and made me so proud to contribute and be part of the Geelong community.

Everyone needs to take some responsibility for making their community a stronger, healthier place to live. The smallest contribution can enable great things to happen. Being part of the Allocations Panel allows me to close the circle of my donations giving me a real opportunity to help determine where my donations should be allocated and how I can help.”

Ford in the Community

A golden partnershipWhen Alcoa produced its first aluminium ingot at the Point Henry smelter in 1963, it signalled the company’s Australian beginnings. It also marked the establishment of a long and impactful three-way partnership between Alcoa, its employees and the Geelong community through Give Where You Live.

The partnership began with a corporate donation from the company and employees donating to Give Where You Live’s community programs.

Fast forward to 2013 and Alcoa continues to make an annual corporate donation, more than half of its employees donate via Workplace Giving, the Loaned Executive Program is thriving and Give Where You Live fundraising events are as popular as ever.

Throughout the five decades, the partnership has grown and evolved but the reason behind the partnership’s success remains the same - Alcoa and Give Where You Live share a common commitment to improve lives and create positive, long term social change in the Geelong region.

Alcoa celebrates 50 years in Geelong this year and is looking forward to sharing this golden milestone with Give Where You Live and its many other Community Partners, employees and stakeholders throughout 2013.

Ford & Give Where You Live a PartnershipThe Ford Employees Contribution Scheme (FECCS) demonstrates Ford’s commitment to corporate citizenship by providing a Ford administered scheme that offers employees the opportunity to donate to a selected charity through payroll deduction. Ford Australia is proud to support Give Where You Live as one of 8 charities involved in the program.

Ford Australia has a long history of supporting Give Where You Live with this tradition of donating time and money continuing, with one-third of Ford Australia’s workforce making a financial contribution to Give Where You Live. This history of support has included an annual corporate donation, Workplace Giving, event sponsorship and staff participation as well as the provision of three Ford vehicles for Give Where You Live staff. Furthermore, Ford has provided valuable ‘people power’ through the nomination of employees for the Loaned Executive Program.

Ford employee, Wayne Moore, has been involved in the Workplace Giving program for over 30 years since he began work at Ford. Wayne shares what the Workplace Giving Program means to him.

Give Where You Live Platinum Partner, TAC has always been a great supporter of the annual Geelong RiverFest (formerly Corporate Head of the River) and staff have gone to great lengths to build their team fundraising. Last year TAC rowing crew ‘Rowed Safety’ had a ball raising money at their Bogan Bingo Evening.

Calling on their colleagues to reveal their inner bogan, the evening featured a bogan air guitar competition with many of the 70 strong crowd either strumming the air strings themselves of voting for their favourite wanna-be guitarist.

The Biggest Bogan of the Night fashion parade saw many of the best dressed bogans strut their stuff on the catwalk impressing the judges with bogan attire that had been hiding secretly in their back of their wardrobe. Winners received Gold Class cinema tickets.

The events on the night provided everyone with a laugh and the $1800 raised was donated to the Feed Geelong appeal via Give Where You Live’s Geelong RiverFest Fundraising Challenge.

“I have always supported Give Where You Live because it supports and gives back to the Geelong Community.

When I first started working for Ford in September 1979, Ford kind of sold the idea of donating as it was one of the largest corporate sponsors of the organisation. Back then it was United Way but still supported places like Bethany. I have been donating to Give Where You Live for over 30 years. If colleagues question whether they should join the Workplace Giving program I tell them of the work that Give Where You Live does and encourage them to support if they can”.

Committee for Geelong’s Annual Leadership Award 2012CONGRATULATIONS TO BARRY FAGG

Congratulations to Barry Fagg on being presented with the Committee for Geelong’s Annual Leadership Award as recognition of his outstanding leadership in the community. Barry is a most worthy recipient.

A relatively new initiative of the Committee for Geelong is the presentation of the Annual Leadership Award. Since 2010, the Committee has recognised the work and outstanding contribution of a member of the Geelong Community.

Committee Chairman Michael Betts said “The Award is focussed on the imperative to both develop and recognise community leadership. Barry has a demonstrated and respected presence in the Geelong community, in particular for his work with Give Where You Live, the Geelong Community Foundation and other important community causes in the region.

Barry has provided his commitment and significant business acumen to a number of organisations over a long period of time, including three years as President of Give Where You Live. He understands the importance of supporting and nurturing those in our community who may be under-resourced or suffer some level of disadvantage.”

Give Where You Live nominated Barry for this award in recognition of his tireless commitment to our organisation over the past 20 years. Barry has been an incredibly active advocate for Give Where You Live in its mission to support people in our region facing disadvantage. His involvement has included roles as Campaign Director, Board Member, President, Life Governor and E&S Trading Golf Classic committee member since the events inception in 1992.

Barry now joins fellow award winners Frank Costa (2010), and Michael Dowling (2011) in an impressive list of leaders who are shaping the future of the Geelong community.

Evologic Technologies are dedicated to providing dependable Computer Support to businesses. They are also dedicated to helping their community and are a great supporter of Give Where You Live.

Evologic Technologies has been involved with Give Where You Live for 10 years in many forms. In 2004 Evologic Technologies were given the opportunity to provide their first Loaned Executive and found it so beneficial that they have only missed two years since. With a relatively small team, a large percentage of their business have benefited from the training and opportunity to engage with the community provided by the program.

“I cannot recommend the program strongly enough, both from a professional development perspective as well as the profound personal impact it has on how we walk through our community.

We place a large focus on having a healthy organisational culture at Evologic. This has lead to 100% of our Team contributing to the Workplace Giving Program. It’s just part of what we do. Give Where You Live are renowned for running some incredible events and we love being able to provide broader experiences to our team and contribute to Geelong at the same time.

We are in the business of productivity and efficiency, and while we deliver that through technology, the fact that we can contribute to so many local beneficiaries by supporting one outstanding organisation is perfect for us!” commented Chris Davies, Evologic Managing Director.

Fagg’s Mitre 10 is heavily involved in our community from donating prizes for school fund raisers, operating the community weekend BBQ to supporting Give Where You Live through the Loaned Executive Program and Workplace Giving Program. It is important that any business gives back to the community – as it is the community that has helped make that business a success. We look forward to serving the people and businesses of Geelong and Give Where You Live for another 150 years!

Give Where You Live supports Back to Back Theatre’s ‘New Spaces, New Ideas’ project that explores new social impact programs for young people with intellectual disabilities in their redeveloped rehearsal and theatre space.

The recent production, a community project titled “Hell House Provocation, Belief & Morality” comprised a theatre presentation of Hell House, written by a US evangelical minister Pastor Keenan Roberts, followed by three community forums on provocation, belief and morality.

Actor Iris Walsh Howling reflected on the overall production saying “It’s been a really interesting process working with the community of people who have become involved. They are from all walks of life and it is an open, inclusive, safe way of working”.

Back to Back Theatre received a $33,710 funding allocation from Give Where You Live over the last financial period.

Our volunteer Grant Allocations Panel is made up of approximately 40 members from a cross-section of the Geelong community who support Give Where You Live staff and Board to read and rate all Grant Applications. Applications are read and rated against specifi c key selection criteria that ultimately ensures that funds are allocated in accordance with community need and where funds will make the biggest impact to benefi ciaries.

Give Where You Live’s Community Partners are those organisations in our community who undertake the vital work that helps improve the lives of those suffering from disadvantage in our community.

2013 Community Partner and Grant Allocation will be announced on Tuesday 9 July.

Mayday AppealEvery day in your community there are tens of thousands of people who are struggling against disadvantage as a result of poor health, low education levels and insuffi cient income.

During May, Give Where You Live is asking for

your help. We are asking everyone in Geelong to donate $1. We’re not asking much, just a simple gold coin from everyone in Geelong which will amount to so much. If everyone in our community can spare just one gold coin, we can reach our target of $220,000.

We are asking Geelong businesses, schools, groups and individuals to help out. Please contact Give Where You Live at [email protected] to register for a collection tin and Mayday fundraising kit or securely donate online at www.givewhereyoulive.com.au and select Mayday as your appeal.
