Hanuman was not the mightiest since birth and didn’t havemany extra ordinary powers when he was born. The s tory behindhis attainment of magnificent power goes like this . A s a child when hanuman was looking out of the window, then hesaw the brightening yellow mango on the mango treesurrounded by leaves but in reality it was the sun piercingthrough the gaps left by leaves of mango tree. A ngry Indra fired his powerful weapon vajra (thunderbolt) atHanuman. Being an avatar of lord Shiva, hanuman didn’t die byIndra strike but he became unconscious and fell back down onearth. Upset over Indra attack on innocent child, another deityV ayu (the deity of wind), and second father of lord hanuman,went into seclusion mode by withdrawing all the air of theuniverse which made all the living beings asphyxiate. Seeingthis , other deities reques ted Indra to withdraw the effec t of hisweapon ‘V ajra’. When Indra withdrew his weapon effec t, hanumanbecame consc ious but Vayu was still not happy since his childsuffered the strike of Vajra. A ll the deities then blessedhanuman with powerful powers to appease deity V ayu. On therequest of Lord Brahma, deity Vayu later released all the airback into the atmosphere.

Brahma also gave the power of removing fear infriends, inf luencing fear in enemies, and ability to vary his formand structure as per his will. Before this incident, hanuman was called as ‘Maruti’. His name is alsoderived combination from two sanskrit words Han ("destroyed” or "killed) and maana(pride) thus implying the meaning "one whose pride was destroyed”Hanuman is the most knowledgeable deity When hanuman came to know that lord surya(Sun) has all theknowledge of the three worlds , he quickly raised his body aroundthe sun orbit and requested surya to transfer knowledge byaccepting him as a student. Undeterred, Hanumanenlarged his form to such an extent that one leg was on thewestern ranges while the other on the wes tern ranges coveringthe entire earth and once again pleaded surya to teach. Pleased by his determination, Deity Surya (Sun) agreed andgave all the knowledge to hanuman.

Surya refused by saying thatthe pleasure to teach such a dedicated s tudent was a fee initself. Hanuman c rossed the ocean to reach lanka in search of goddessSita (Lord Rama wife) who was kidnapped by demon Ravana. O nseeing goddess Sita sobbing on her separation from husbandlord Rama, hanuman appeared in front of Sita and gave her lordRama ring. O n seeing lord rama ring, she became assured thather husband is alive and hanuman is his messenger. Pleased byhanuman devotion and the news of rama trying to rescue her,she blessed hanuman with immortality. Since then, Hanumanremains immortal; and responds to the call of his s inceredevotees thereby helping them in fulfilling their des ires . In another story, when hanuman teared his chest to show theimage of ram and Sita residing in his heart, he was blessed withimmortality by both Lord rama and goddess sita. He also reminded him of goddessSita blessing of immortality turning futile if he ascends tovishnuloka. So lord ram asked hanuman to stay on earth to helpinhabitants of earth attains moksha through devotion andkarma.
