Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Parish Life Weekly Schedule There are lots of famous quotes credited to the likes of Mark Twain, Albert Einstein, and Abraham Lincoln … things that apparently

they never actually said. I suppose someone found the phrase so clever, so wise, that surely someone famous and important had to have said it first. But here is the story behind some clever words that I was able to track down. Maya Angelou, famed poet and memoirist, was visiting a classroom at Baylor University after which a professor, Greg Garrett, thanked her for her writing and her example. Then he added (in an academic environment that doesn’t always share the world of religious belief), "And to think ... you're a Christian." In his blog, Mr. Garrett reports (with a wee bit of embarrassment) that Ms. Angelou responded to him in her deep resonant voice: “Oh honey, I am not a Christian. I am trying to be a Christian.” “Trying to be a Christian” is how I opened my preaching last Tuesday, All Souls Day ... and from that clever response by Ms. Angelou, I tried to explain the meaning of our commemoration. There is no room in Heaven for sin and selfishness. God wants us full-grown. But thirty or sixty or ninety years, is not enough time for many of us to become fully grown, free from sin. Maybe I am being harsh, but looking around (and knowing myself) I see lots of people still working at trying to be Christian, and not so many finished projects yet. My Mother was a wonderfully faithful and loving woman, but when she died a dozen years ago, she still had an issue or two that needed to be addressed. All her life, for example, she tended to be a bit fearful. I don’t think she will be fully ready for Heaven until God removes that and makes her courageous. I think I take more after my Dad more than my Mom, so looking at me, you have some sense of the kinds of things he was still working on when he died at age 54. And God wants him full-grown too. And it’s that idea that God will not settle for us being partially finished, that fueled our ancestors in faith to trust in God’s gracious schooling even after death. God is surely the best of teachers and He will finish the work. And He gives you and me the dignity of helping. I mean, it’s God’s grace that transforms us … but He honors our affection for those whom we have loved and have passed, and welcomes our assistance on their behalf by inviting our prayer and sacrifice. No one would have thought it odd while she lived, that my prayer for my Mom had an effect. Catholics believe that our prayer for our dear ones continues to be a blessing after their passing. And that is what we mean by Purgatory. Though it’s usually capitalized, it isn’t a “place” like Mosinee or Paris … and lots of philosophical problems arise when we talk about “spending time” there. (With God, our concepts of time and space sort of melt away.) Yet Purgatory is our name for the process by which God would complete those whose orientation and trust were towards Him, but who didn’t start soon enough, live long enough, or were seriously contrite enough to be ready at death to meet God face-to-face. This cleansing and growing up thing are God’s gift to those trying to be a Christian. It gives me great hope. I trust you see it that way also. Msgr. Mark

Readings for 33rd Sunday in Ordinary TimeNovember 14

Daniel 12:1-3; Hebrews 10:11-14,18; Mark 13:24-32As the Church year nears its end, we read two Scriptures from a kind of biblical writing called apocalyptic. It sounds ominous, and it sort of is. Apocalyptic literature became popular a couple of centuries before Jesus and generally died back a couple of centuries after Jesus, but it contin-ues to be composed (in a non-biblical form) even today. It tends to arise during periods of severe strain and outright persecution, giving a hopeful sense that God is about to act for his own on the day of his choosing. The book of Daniel was written when the Jews were suffering under religious persecution a century and a half before Jesus, and the thirteenth chapter of Mark includes Jesus’ teaching to his disciples as the early Church stood to face resistance from a non-believing majority. What words of hope do youfind in today’s Gospel, in Hebrews, and in Daniel?

Two Upcoming Celebrations of our National Day of ThanksgivingOn the evening before Thanksgiving, Wednesday the 24th at 6:30 pm, we will be re-connecting some threads that were cut by COVID’s onset, as parishioners at St. Michael and Resurrection Parishes are invited to join our neighbors at Imman-uel Lutheran (630 Adams Street)in an ecumenical Thanksgiving Service of the Word. Fr. Mark will preach. But, on the positive side, there will be pie to follow.

If you’d like to donate a pie, please take it to Immanuel Lutheran (enter through the doors from the Hamilton Street parking lot) on Tuesday the 23rd or Wednesday the 24th between 9am-3pm or Wednesday evening prior to the service (doors will be open by 5:00pm).

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Thanksgiving Day morning, November 25th, we will celebrate the Eucharist at 8:30 am at the Church of the Resurrection. Sorry, no pie at this one, but something far more sustaining: the Eucharist. Come to one; come to both. Gratitude isn’t a chore … it’s therapy.

Beginning on the First Sunday of Advent (November 28) we will have a limited number of the Sunday Readings books available at Mass. If you would like to purchase a copy of your very own, please let us know by November 8. They will be available on a separate table when they arrive with a basket for your offering of $3.50. Current COVID procedures at Sunday Masses at the Eastside ParishesLast updated October 13, 2021Here’s a rundown of our current procedures at worship:· For the unvaccinated, the continued wearing of face coverings and social distancing remain strongly recommended; even those who have been vaccinated are encouraged to mask at Mass and at other parish events.

· Most of each church will be available for seating with two exceptions: first, the pews at the very front and the very back of each section will continue to have an empty “buffer” row (behind or ahead of it) for those who would welcome more space between them and others. And for the time being the 5:30 pm Mass at Resurrection will continue to re-quire 6’ distancing and the wearing of masks by all.

· Taking the offering “passively” at the entrances of the church will continue for now.· Sanitizing of “high-touch” areas (pew tops, door handles, etc.) will continue per CDC recommendations.Stay tuned. Things change.
