PRESIDENT’S REPORT

What a season it was with many highlights and only a few low points. All up the club performed very well and there is much to be pleased about. The highlights for the year include:-

Junior and Senior Club Champions 4th Grade Red were Premiers T20 Champions 1st, 2nd and 3rd Grade 1st grade undefeated Minor Premiers and Grand finalists Third Grade Semi finalists 4th Grade Red Grand T20 finalists 16A Minor & Major Premiers 14A Grand Finalists 11 Grand finalists U16 and U14 Weetbix Cup finalists. Final played at SCG Teams from all junior ages made semi finals

First Grade had a great season only recording two loses; one in the T20 competition and the other unfortunately the grand final. Again Graeme Batty dominated the Illawarra competition by scoring some 921 runs in all forms of the game and also took 32 wickets. Graeme won the Batting Aggregate, Batting Average, the Best and Fairest (as judged by the Umpires) and the Ron Ring Illawarra Cricketer of the year. Jonathan Cook also had a very good year winning the Illawarra bowling averages by taking 34 wickets at 9.91 and with the bat he scored 322 runs. Other mentions should also go to Neel Honavar who had a good season with bat and ball and has truly become a very good all rounder, Nick Bell who had a better second half with the ball than first, Martin Luskin who had the most dismissals in 1st grade for a wicket keeper and Shane Davis who made a return this year and made a fine 36 in the grand final. At one stage I thought he was going to get us home. Second grade was very successful in the T20 competition going through undefeated. Special mention to Nathan Lawson who won man of the match honours in the final for his 3/15 off the allotted four overs and the steady batting of Nicholas Theodossiadis (38) who controlled the innings to ensure we won. The regular season was somewhat disappointing as second grade failed to fire in the first five games and it wasn’t until round 6 that they registered their first win. This proved to be their downfall as they failed to progress to the semi finals (some may say the two washed out games in February didn’t help). Arron Latse, an under 16 all rounder who won the batting averages for second grade is a talent to watch in the upcoming years as well as others including Darcy Crane, Robby Gyngell and Troy Coleman. Special mention must go to Matt Williams who helped turn the team around upon his introduction when he became available; and to the uncompromising batting of Nicholas Theodossiadis who seemed to hold onto his wicket for dear life itself, although unfortunately was largely unavailable through the season. Trent Boncompagni led our third grade team where many under 16 players participated and succeeded. Brothers Jacob and Dylan Murphy scored centuries in third grade, Keiran Richards had a huge impact on the team when he played. All three also played second grade at different times through the season and Dylan also played one first grade game. Keep an eye out for these young cricketers. The third grade performer of the year was the ever young Chris Betts who managed to win the Cricket Illawarra Third grade batting averages that included his maiden century quickly followed by his second century. Additionally Chris also won our bowling averages and to top this off, he also won Most Improved in Grade. What a year for Chris; well done. Fourth grade Red was the “Fathers and Sons” team and I must personally thank Greg Stacey and Scott Stark for doing what some of us have failed to do; that is keep young players playing cricket, some old ones also. Directly from this team of last year, Darcy Crane went on to play second grade, Nicholas Stacey who until contracting glandular fever was a very strong member of the second grade team and Matt Stark who was very good in third grade. Who will forget his four overs in the T20 final and the crowd roaring “Starky? Starky!”

Page 5: THIRTY SECOND ANNUAL REPORT - Keira Cricket Clubkeiracc.nsw.cricket.com.au/files/1581/files/Annual Reports/2012-13... · Keira Annual Report 2012-2013 pg. 3/50 OFFICE BEARERS 2011-2012

Keira Annual Report 2012-2013 pg. 5/50

The team had a great year and they won their grand final easily. Playing Wests Blue Keira batted first and accumulated 8/178 off the mandatory 45 overs. Keira then proceeded to bowl out Wests for 80 with James Stacey taking a hat trick and retribution was complete after their crushing defeat at the hands of the same team in the T20 final. The team was not dominated by one player but there were many contributors; Geoff David scored a century took and the Keira fielding award and the Keira 4th grade bowling averages; Matt Scavarelli won Cricket Illawarra batting averages for Fourth Grade, James Stacey took a hat trick and also scored a century and the ever green Phil Dowdell scored his maiden century. Phil recalls it was so hot they were taking drinks breaks every 18 overs and he was glad one drinks break arrived as he could not remember how he advanced his score from 63 to what it was at that break!! Fourth grade black had an average year but I must say I mentioned to Peter Murphy who captained the team very well that I thought he must have had some 30 players participate through the season at that point. This does not help with team camaraderie, team structure or establishing a role on for the team. There was a welcomed return to the playing field for Joe Ucles and Chris Parkes. The senior scene really suffered from poor player availability and this along with training attendance seemed to be a systemic problem. The number of differing players per team were:-

First grade 16 Second Grade 27 Third Grade 40 Fourth grade Black 35 Fourth Grade Red 24

I don’t believe the solution will be easy but we will need perseverance and patience. The best day of the season without fail I believe was the T20 finals. Wet weather greeted us and third grade was delayed until after first grade. Second grade had what would be considered a very steady win against Helensburgh (Keira 5/91 from 19 overs defeated Helensburgh 5/90 from 20 overs). Followed up by a very convincing win by first grade who controlled the game from the outset Keira 4/131 defeated Wollongong 8/104 and of course third grade 7 for 120 after 20 overs defeated Wollongong 7/116 after 20 overs. I was impressed to see how supportive each grade was of one another and how the Keira faithful waited with great anxiety as third grade finished the day off well past 8:00 pm. Jonathan Cook was our club coach this year and I must congratulate him on his efforts through the year. Jonathan was well organised and ensured that training ran smoothly and as a young coach, he did very well and certainly concentrated on improving our fielding. I was disappointed for Jonathan as at times training was poorly attended but you could always rely on the young brigade to be there. The under 21s were well coached and managed by Steve Coleman. Unfortunately we played in the rain against Helensburgh in the semi-final and were well beaten. However, one of the highlights through the 21s series was Rob Gyngell and Dan Constables last wicket partnership against Northern Districts where we were bowled out for 201 after being 9 for 64! On the representative scene we had Graeme Batty and Tim Laws represent NSW Country, additionally Neel Honavar and Jonathan Cook represented in the Illawarra team. Daniel Constable represented at under 17s and colts. Dan also went on to be selected in the NSW under 17s squad. The junior scene was once again underlined by a great effort by all the coaches, managers and parents. I must thank all the coaches:- Paul Constable Under 16A Brent Koppell & Jack Dobinson Under 16B Peter Brailey Under 14A Ron Johnston Under 14B Matt Imber Under 12 Darren Nunn Under 11 Tony Oakley Under 10 Doug Murphy Milo Cricket

I attended at least one game from each team throughout the year and what I saw from afar was well run teams. The coaches and players did such a great job, we won the Junior Club Championship by a long way. An achievement that all should be proud of and I am sure we are all hoping it will be repeated next year. A special mention must go to Andrew Horsely who is the facilitator of the junior group and Paul Constable who attends all committee meetings to discuss and help with all things in junior cricket. Paul was also the person who managed to obtain the red trousers that looked so good on our players through gala days and Weetbix cup games. We were very fortunate to have the 16s and 14s represent us at the finals of the Weetbix Cup finals played at the SCG. Both these teams were the very first regional teams to be represented in final of this competition and they both played very well but were unfortunate to come up against very good opposition. We had 17 junior players represent Illawarra cricket at different levels: U11 - Liam Constable, Brandon Silcox, Max Okely, Tate Harland. U12 - Aubrey Duncan, Aiden Imber U13 - Wesley Van Kempen, Tane Nunn, Caelan Smith U14 - Daine Richards U15 - Kyle Booth U16 - Keiren Richards, Dylan Murphy, Jacob Murphy, Aaron Llatse, Daniel Silcox, Daniel Constable. The White Lions were re-born on the field thanks to the efforts of Joe Ucles who managed to develop organise and maintain the new look masters playing team. They played several games both home and away and the games that I attended there seemed to be a great enjoyment yet good fair competition. Many thanks to Mark Johnson who produced two newsletters for the White Lions. Unfortunately we also had the sad passing of Phil Hearn who was a long time player for Keira through the seventies. Phil played first and second grade and I can recall playing with Phil when he captained second grade. Phil was a good batsmen but also handy with the ball. The club performed very well through the year financially and we will report a small surplus. We took on a new initiative by holding a barbecue at Bunnings. The day turned out to be a great success and on the day, Joe Ucles donated drinks, bread and onions and also took many pictures. Many thanks to Stewart Williams, Peter Murphy, the Constables, Liza Booth, the Richards Family, the Silcox Family and Joe Ucles who helped throughout the day. We have applied to have another barbecue at Bunnings. Kim McConnochie continued to work tirelessly on the pavilion project and the DA was approved this year. Consequently we worked with Wollongong City Council who applied for funding to commence the project but this was unsuccessful. Through Kim’s leadership we have applied for a small grant through the department of Sport and Recreation and we await the outcome of this application. The success of this application will lead to further submissions for funding and hopefully we will be able to secure enough funds to commence and then complete the project. This year through the work of Peter Brailey we had two new sponsors; Kel Campbell Fuel Supplies and Premium Tyres. This enabled us to discount new training shirts to our juniors. We also maintained our sponsorship through one of our long time sponsors Verekers Lawyers; thanks to Peter Williamson. The IMB referral sponsorship worked well and we had some funds come to us through this promotion. Again the Tennis Club was our major sponsor and they supported us very well throughout the year. The club announced a major long term new sponsor at the end of this season; Wiseman Park Wollongong City Bowling Club. This sponsorship is a three year rolling sponsorship that enables Keira to grow the value of the sponsorship if it completes its commitments successfully.

The new sponsorship will require new attire throughout the club and we have a small subcommittee who is working on this. To fund the new attire we will have to commit to use some of the cash reserves that have accumulated over the last few years. To ensure all players are correctly outfitted for the season we will be offering a discount scheme that will be inclusive of fees. We introduced a new initiative this year by sending emails to all club members, sponsors, white Lions and interested people. There were two emails generally sent each week including one to inform the fixtures for the weekend (junior and senior); the second which was only sent to senior players were team selections. These emails included all our sponsors which was a different way in trying to promote them in return for their valued support in difficult times. The committee worked very hard through the year under some tough circumstances and I cannot thank them enough for their hard work, commitment to Keira and the vision that they have in making the Keira Cricket Club a better club. SENIOR REPORTS

First Grade Report 1st Grade Report 2012-2013 Keira Cricket Club

I was proud to lead the Lions again in my 4th season at the Club. I was hoping for a massive year for the 1st

Grade side mainly due to the new recruits we obtained in the off season. Tim Laws from St George / Randwick

was a huge signing for the club as Tim had played many years of 1st grade in Sydney and added a lot to our

strong batting order. Shane Davis, who played for the club a few seasons ago, was back and added a lot with

bat and also in the field as a strong catcher and outfielder. The rest of the lads were enthusiastic for the new

season with Jono Cook taking over coaching duties for the club as I had retired from the position. 2 day cricket

was out for this season and 55 over games introduced to bring a few teams back to the pack.

The season started off in fine fashion with great wins over Uni , Northern Districts and Corrimal. It looked like

Keira was sending a big message to the rest of the comp that we were the team to beat in both forms. After a

disappointing year with the bat last year for Keira, I was determined to have a huge start to the year which I did

Page 8: THIRTY SECOND ANNUAL REPORT - Keira Cricket Clubkeiracc.nsw.cricket.com.au/files/1581/files/Annual Reports/2012-13... · Keira Annual Report 2012-2013 pg. 3/50 OFFICE BEARERS 2011-2012

Keira Annual Report 2012-2013 pg. 8/50

scoring 400 runs in the first 6 rounds. Tim Laws , Jono Cook and Neil Honavar were also consistent

performers with the bat in the early rounds. With ball Cookie and Honavar were dominant and looking the

goods for 30+ for the season. A big test for the side was round 6 vs Helensburgh which would show where

we were at as they are very competitive but we came up trumps easily with 100 from myself and solid 30’s

from Honavar and Constable . The game was looking the goods for a winning draw after ‘Burgh got off to a

good start but we pulled it in with the crucial wickets of Hayden McRae and Blissendon . With 15 overs to go

and the ‘Burgh needing 100 runs with 6 wickets we thought they might have had a crack but they were pulled

in by the negative tactics of Captain Tim Lloyd. This cost them the game in the end as we bowled them out in

the 15 overs with 3 wickets from myself and 3 from Cookie who got the last wicket from the 2nd last ball of the

day . A very satisfying win which was key to our unbeaten season so far.

The next 2 rounds were victories and the games were over before they started. Dapto and Wests were fielding

very weak teams this year and we were looking to dominate both teams as we chased low totals in both

games with great performances from Butler 4/12 against Dapto and myself 5/39 and 60 not out against

Wests. With the new format the games were over at 3pm which was disappointing as in a 2 day game we

could have played some more good cricket and seen our players take more wickets and maybe get someone

making a big score .

The season was rolling round beautifully with wins from all out round games except The SCG cup as we were

knocked out in the 2nd round by Lake Illawarra again for the 3rd year in a row. We didn’t fill a full team for this

game with 6 players out.

After the NSW Country Championships myself and Tim Laws were selected in The NSW Country side to tour

Bundaberg in the Australian Country Championships in January, in which we would miss the next 2 round

games vs. Wollongong and University. Jonathan Cook led the side to 2 great wins with highlights from Cook

33 and Dobinson 30 against W’gong and wickets from Honavar and Cook against W’gong who we thought

were going to be a tough opposition . We smashed them with runs from Dickie and wickets from Honavar. The

next 3 games saw victories over Port Kembla , Balgownie and Northern Districts with a few washouts mixed in,

which happens every year without fail. Mixed in with the season this year was the T20 comp, which we won

quite easily with only 1 loss against Balgownie in the last round . The final saw us play Wollongong which was

going to be a fantastic game against a team very suited to that format with quality player such as Hicks,

Goulding and Yabsley. We batted first and posted a good score of 130 with scores from myself 55 , Cook 30

and Doug Murphy 25 . On a great track and fantastic outfield I thought the score maybe short but that wasn’t

the case with match winning spells from Nick Bell, Troy Coleman and Jono Cook who kept the W’gong chase

well below the required run rate all game and they finished well short . It was the 2nd time we have won the

Cup which no other club has done before. It was a great day for Keira with wins from 1st , 2nd and 3rd grade in

the T20 finals.

Our final home game was against Wollongong and it was a huge game as it would have given us that

undefeated season in the home and away rounds . Wollongong batted first and posted a modest score of 156.

Our chase started slowly but Constable 33 and Cook 46 not out batted very well to get the runs and cap off a

wonderful season .

In the Semi Final we played the very much improved Corrimal who were a surprise packet all year. At Dalton

Park on a great track again we got off to a horrible start losing 5/26 with some great bowling from the old war

horse Adam Brown who had the ball on a string. With Cook and Honavar at the crease we needed these 2 to

show the Lion fight and get a partnership going, and they did - putting 85 together in quick time to put us in a

great position at 5 -111 and a great platform to get 160 + and put the game out of reach for Corrimal . Honavar

finished with 73 and batted out of his skin with good support from Murphy 27 to get us to 194 . A wonderful

effort from Honavar and Cook as we were in big trouble and needed someone to stand up - and they did in a

big way.

Page 9: THIRTY SECOND ANNUAL REPORT - Keira Cricket Clubkeiracc.nsw.cricket.com.au/files/1581/files/Annual Reports/2012-13... · Keira Annual Report 2012-2013 pg. 3/50 OFFICE BEARERS 2011-2012

Keira Annual Report 2012-2013 pg. 9/50

Well - before you have read this report you would know that we lost to Helensburgh in a close game which

was shattering for the boys who toiled so hard but couldn’t put it together with bat on the day.

All in all it was a fantastic year and I was very proud to lead the 1st grade side again in a season which only saw us lose 3 games out of 20 which was a great effort. Since I have been at the club I have seen great improvement from all the boys such as Honavar, Cook, Butler and Bell and Grand Final victory is just around the corner and when they get one they will want more - it will just be about getting that 1st one which is always the hardest . I think 2013-2014 will be the year with that experience - sometimes you have to lose one to win one. G. Batty

Second Grade Report How do I review our 2nd grade 2012/13 season? Should it be classed as the season that was or the season that could have been? Let’s start with the season that was & recount our T20 efforts.

The T20 comp was something new for 2nd grade this season. This format seemed to really suit our style of play – though some said this was because we often score quickly but rarely bat out our overs in the “long form” of the game! - & saw us reach the finals not having lost a game. There was a great spirit amongst the whole team & there was always the feeling that we all had each other’s backs. This reflected on the field & we consistently turned in wonderful team efforts – each player knew their role & fulfilled it well.

As with any team, we had some outstanding individual performances in these regular round games. James Pirie’s 5/21 vs Helensburgh was the bowling highlight, with all 5 wickets being bowled! With the bat, Aaron ‘Bad Boy’ Llatse’s 69 opening the batting vs Balgownie was another dominant T20 performance of note.

Our semi was vs Port Kembla at Zeims Park. I won the toss & elected to bat. We lost Bad Boy for a duck, but Jack Dobinson (who’s occasional nickname of JD seemed particularly appropriate on this morning) was batting without inhibition & knocked up a quick fire 21. We lost a few cheap wickets in the top order before Horse (17), Matt Williams (28) & Jake “George” Murphy (13) steadied the ship, steering us to 8/114 off our 20 overs.

Robbie “Ginge” Gyngell got us off to a flyer with the ball, snaring 3 early wickets. Tight bowling from the bowlers & some great fielding saw Port needing 12 off the last over. Bad Boy proved up to the challenge with the ball & kept a very cool head for a young man, with Port finishing 5 runs short. The Lions are in the Final! The final was played Helensburgh, who fielded a vastly different side to that which we’d given a pasting during the regular rounds. They won the toss & chose to bat on a Dalton Park wicket that had been under covers due to yet another wet week. The wicket was flat but a little sticky, with the ball not really coming through. With our regular T20 opening spin option (Troy “T.C” Coleman) promoted to 1sts, I gave Nathan “Shaggy” Lawson the task of being our tweaker. He responded by snaring 3/15 in his excellent 4 over spell, much to our delight! We once again bowled tight & fielded well, restricting the Burgers to 5/90 off their 20 overs. In response with the bat, we lost J.D early for a duck. The Burgh boys fired up & got very excited, but fellow opener Chris “Sledge” Hamer has other ideas & made a very good 23 that included plenty of ‘Sledginess’. At the other end, Nick Theo was compiling a beautiful innings – this was hard fought, with lots of singles, hard running & minimal risks. He was joined by Matt Williams & together they batted Helensburgh out of the game, with Nick falling for 38 - just 5 runs shy of victory. Darcy “Bronco” Crane joined M.W & scored 3no before Matt hit the winning run & the Lions were victorious! Go you Lions! Undefeated T20 2nd Grade Premiers!! The team song was sung loud & proud of course, led enthusiastically as always by James Pirie.

I guess now we need to look at the season that could have been…..

The season opener vs Uni saw us take the field with 6 2nd grade debutants, 3 of these playing their 1st Senior grade game. Uni posted 246 & Keira managed 228 in reply. This in itself was quite astounding considering we had 7 batsmen fail to reach double figures (4 didn’t trouble the scorers at all!) Jim “Jellem” Ellem posted a hard fought 42 alongside the evergreen Andrew “Horse” Horsley before we lost 6 for 36. It was only the attempted heroics of Horse & Ginge who put on 90 for the last wicket before Ginge was caught & bowled by the wily Peter Sommerville, leaving us 18 runs short & Horse the last man standing on a magnificent 101 n.o.

Page 10: THIRTY SECOND ANNUAL REPORT - Keira Cricket Clubkeiracc.nsw.cricket.com.au/files/1581/files/Annual Reports/2012-13... · Keira Annual Report 2012-2013 pg. 3/50 OFFICE BEARERS 2011-2012

Keira Annual Report 2012-2013 pg. 10/50

Whilst the following rounds saw several close games & the return of many players that were unavailable for the start of the season, we didn’t taste our first “1-day” win until Round 6.This round saw the return of Matt Williams who made a healthy contribution to the result with 4/43 & a match winning 71 n.o.

This seemed to really kick start our season & we went on to win 8 out of our next 10 games played, breaking into the Top 4 with 7 rounds left to play. Unfortunately the weather conspired against us, washing out several crucial rounds that had us pitted against lowly teams while those above us would have been playing each other. So, rather than sitting in what should have been 2nd or 3rd position, we found ourselves in 5th – needing to attain a win vs 3rd placed Wollongong (& expecting that Minor Premiers Northern Districts would defeat 4th placed Corrimal. A 20 point win would see us jump to 3rd if this happened). Wollongong knew that they couldn’t miss out on a finals spot as long as they denied us the full 20 points & played accordingly batting very steadily on a Dalton Park road to ensure that they were not bowled out – posting 6/187. We fell 26 runs short of their total, meaning that our season was over. As it turned out, even if we’d chased them down & won, an unexpected win by Corrimal over N.D occurred that would have denied us a finals spot regardless.

I’d like to thank all the guys that played 2nds this season. Despite not reaching the semis, we did have a good season. The spirit & bond of the side was tight & we truly played as a team. It was fantastic to see the emergence & development of the younger players in the side. Ginge gave his all, Bronco grew with both bat & ball and Bad Boy was often our best player. His fielding was superb (lurking in the covers, saving runs & performing some outstanding run-outs at crucial times), he bowled well when needed & was our leading run scorer (scoring 348 runs across both 1-day & T20 comps). I’m sure that these guys will go on to fulfil their promise of becoming prominent & valuable Keira players.

From the ‘senior’ ranks; T.C bowled well & was our workhorse, often bowling the full allotment of 15 overs & keeping it tight. Shaggy took up this role admirably when T.C went to 1sts. Nick Theo batted very well for us when was in the side – sadly Nick’s work commitments meant that he played far too few games & we often missed the starch that he added to our batting line-up. Matt Williams’ value to the team with his all-round abilities was clear. He batted with his usual power & flair and really stepped up with the ball in his hand this season, finishing with 21 wickets @ 11.57. Unfortunately, Matt played only 9 games of the regular season for us & could have achieved so much more had he played a full season. Some of the lads found it astounding that we had lost only 2 of the last 14 games of the season, yet didn’t make the semis. My response to that is to point to our poor start to the season, which was fuelled by a remarkable number of high grade unavailability. It seems that everyone is keen to play at the business end of the season, yet the same can’t be said for the start. While we know that our season was cruelled by a horrible month of weather at the end of the season, if we had won just 2 of those early games we’d have finished comfortably in the Top 4.

We all love our mighty cricket club, thus I implore all Lions to represent it to our fullest ability & commit to playing from the start of the season –and to play most games. If we can accomplish this, I guarantee that the Lions will roar louder than ever! ROAR!!

Third Grade Report

Season 2012-13 was one that yielded some success for third grade in the form of a Twenty20 Premiership, but ultimately felt like a case of so close yet so far when it came to the major prize at the end of the season. The season started off somewhat slowly but gained some momentum on the back of some inspiring individual performances. Darcy Crane's unbeaten half century against Corrimal and Dylan Murphy's maiden century of 105 against Balgownie in just his 9th grade game saw the Lions season get started. The season really picked up some pace on the back of a purple patch of form for Chris Betts. Revelling in his role as skipper in my absence, Bettsy piled on the runs with his first ever grade century, amassing an impressive 130 against Helensburgh and sharing a record breaking double century opening stand with Matt

Stark (69). After taking 245 games for the first century, the second came around just 2 weeks later against the old enemy Wests. Chris carried his bat for 114no, with Simon Williams' 45 the only support for Bettsy. His two tonnes sandwiched a performance of 6/42 with the ball against Dapto. We entered a frustrating period either side of Christmas, which included five matches with close margins. Unfortunately we were on the wrong end of four of them, giving up winning positions in each game. After being 7/37 against Wollongong, we managed to scratch out 144 and with a good bowling partnership between Brent Koppel (3/27) and James Ellem (2/24) we had Wollongong on the ropes at 9/111 only to let the game slip. We also failed to chase 97 against University after a spell of 4/9 from myself. Our run chase saw us lose 6/0 to be all out for 70. A loss to Northern Districts followed the same script as the match against Wollongong. Defending 130, an opening spell of 5/55 from myself had the Butchers 9/96 and again we let it slip. Amongst the run of outs we managed a six run win against Port Kembla with James Pirie announcing himself with 4/58 from his 17 overs, coupled with another tight 10 over spell of 2/11 from Brent Koppel who was making a habit of picking up two or three wickets each week. Amongst the season proper, third grade tasted Twenty20 cricket for the first time this season, which saw the Lions take home the trophy on a spectacular day for the club which saw all four grades make the final and ultimately claim three premierships. Our only loss in the Twenty20 season came in our opener against Wollongong in awful conditions, a well made 40 by Dylan Murphy adding some respect to the scoreboard. A comprehensive win against Dapto came on the back of a century stand from Chris Betts (46no) and Aaron Llatse (60) in chasing down a competitive 127. The double header was a good day out for the Lions with wins against a strong University side backed up by a demolishing 10 wicket win against Helensburgh. Some impressive hitting from Nick Stacey (48) and T20 specialist Lincoln Bendall-Moon (36) gave Uni a tough 130 to chase. Brent Koppel's 3/23 spearheaded an overall tight bowling performance which saw Uni fall 21 runs short. Kyle Booth showed why Keira's future looks strong after he made short work of Helensburgh with 4/14 together with Justin Grant taking 3/6. Justin again starring in the run chase with 52no in an unbeaten opening stand with Jordan Theodossiadis (29no), easily passing the target of 82 in under 10 overs. The final T20 round game saw a comprehensive 137 run victory over Balgownie. The lions put on a show with the bat, scoring 203 lead by Bendall-Moon's 77 and cameos from the Murphy twins and guest star Jeremy Tosswill. Our semi final saw our winning streak against Corrimal continue. Batting first our total of 108 felt somewhat short. After a pivotal 35 runs with the bat, a fiery opening spell of 4/10 from Bendall-Moon setup some extremely tight middle overs from Kyle Booth (1/10 off 3) to restrict Corrimal to 91. On a day which saw all four grades in the final, our boys were forced to watch grass dry until we finally got our run under lights on the main oval. Batting first against Wollongong, a steady start from Chris Betts gave our eleventh hour call up Chris Butler a good platform to make a crafty unbeaten 45 to give us a very defendable total of 120. With the game delicately balanced, I rolled the dice and threw the ball to part time off spinner Matt Stark. The following overs created a legend that will be told over schooners for years to come as he halted the run flow, picking up two wickets in the process. After a period that was all Wollongong, Brent Koppel bounced back to take two crucial wickets in two balls in the 16th over to put us well and truly back in the match. Some tight overs from Bendall-Moon left Wollongong needing 10 from the final over. A wicket from the first ball of the final over from Koppel made it too hard for Wollongong as the Lions got home by 2 runs. The match was played in a fantastic atmosphere and the tense victory capped off a great day for Lions.

Buoyed by the T20 success, we then went on a run of four wins in a row. Chris "Sledge" Hamer made the most of his nine lives, belting a well made 84 against a top four side in Corrimal in difficult conditions. He then followed it up with 81 against Balgownie, supported by another one of our talented juniors, Kieran Richards, who smashed 5 sixes on his way to 45. Chris Betts continued his love affair against Helensburgh, returning to form with a half century. But he was overshadowed as Jacob Murphy as he joined twin brother Dylan on the centurions list with a highly entertaining 122. During our winning streak, James Pirie was an absolute stand out with the ball. His figures included 3/22 (10) v Corrimal, 4/28(12) v Balgownie, an incredible 8/41 (13.2) v Helensburgh and at one stage looked a certainty for taking all 10 and 4/34(8) v Wollongong. He was backed well by ball magnet Tim Frater, whose bucket hands snared some impressive catches to go with his fiery spells that would trouble plenty of batsmen in higher grades. Chris Betts also grabbed another five wicket haul against Balgownie. When it came to the semi final we unfortunately became a victim of our red hot form when we ran into a strong Northern Districts team. We made a competitive 174, but our lack of strong competition in the closing stages of the season proper had us a little underdone in the field as the minor premiers chased down our total 5 wickets down. Overall the season was highly enjoyable for myself as a captain. We had a strong mix of both youth, which unearthed some future talent for the Lions through the likes of the Murphy twins, Kieran Richards, Kyle Booth and Matt Stark, and experience in the form of Chris Betts, James Pirie and Chris Hamer, all who's knowledge made my job a hell of a lot easier. Congratulations on a great season to all of the third grade players, which included many positive results both on a team level as well as individual performances. I have no doubt that many of our core group of players from this season would taste success in higher grades well into the future, a future that yields so much promise for our club. Fourth Grade Red Report

CAPTAINS REPORT 2012/13 4TH GRADE CRICKET

The whole idea of setting up the father/son side last season was to ensure that 9 young cricketers who had played together since under 10s would not be lost to the game. The first year was a massive success and the second year we exceeded all expectations. We retained the majority of the side losing Darcy Crane and Matt Stark to the higher grades. We picked up Darren Smith, Geoff David and Matt Scavarelli joined his father for this year. These guys proved to be amazing pickups for the side contributing on the field and fitting into the tight knit culture of the side. The major highlight of the year for me was that we never relied on one person and everyone in the team chipped in at different times of the year to ensure we got the points. The perfect example of this is our bowling in the finals where Alec took six in the quarters, Matt Scavarelli took 5 in the semi and James Stacey took 4 in the Grand final including a hat trick. This was achieved by pressure build from Geoff David and Joel Dowdell who were our spearheads all year. Joel Dowdell deserves special mention as he improved out of sight and is extremely passionate about his cricket after contemplating retiring at the age of 16. He took 29 wickets for the year and bowled some amazing spells throughout the year which turned games around for us. Our spin trio of Matt Scavarelli, Greg and James Stacey were the three best spinners in the comp.(appsy and murph may argue) and tied teams down and took plenty of wickets. Our batting was also shared around with lots of guys scoring runs throughout the season the standouts being Geoff David, James Stacey, Matt Scavarelli and Phil Dowdell. Phil, James and Geoff scored amazing centuries though the year all in similar vein off about 50 balls, very pretty to watch. The highlight of the year in the batting was Neil Adams getting is highest score of his career of 20 not out this was at the age of 47. Our batting was a little bit fragile throughout the year but stood up in the final series when it matters. Particularly in

the final when Harry and Greg got us off to a great start which enabled us to post a highly competitive total which we could defend. We had a great year we came second in the competition at the end of the rounds and we were top of the table in the twenty 20 competition. We made the Grand Final in both competitions and had very different outcomes on these days against the same opponent. Firstly, the 20/20 final against west could only be described as a debacle. After clever planning and thinking the skipper decided to change the batting order which was not one of my finest moments. All out for 26 is all I need to say the only day of the year that someone didn’t stand up and be counted. They got them of 3.2 overs and it was all over. Lucky for us that the three higher grades all won and we could be happy for them. Also in our favour was the fact that Wests as only they do carried on like complete tools in their celebrations which gave us great motivation for the rest of the year. On Grand Final day we got an opportunity to seek revenge against West with a rematch in the longer form of the game. The day got off to a good start with the captain winning the toss for the first time since Christmas. We chose to bat and after a solid start we slumped to 7/125 then our master blaster Matt Scavarelli stepped in and blasted 39 in quick time which got us to a respectable 183 of our 45 overs. Wests then batted and got off to flying start and were 0/32 off 5 overs. Then the game turned on a fantastic caught and bowled by Alec Adams. Joel Dowdell came on and took 2 quick wickets and we were on top. Wests then put on 30 runs with their star batsmen taking control of the game. They were 3/72 when the wily fox Greg Stacey removed their star batsmen and they crumbled like hot apple pie. The spinners cleaned up with Greg and Matt taking one each and James taking 4 wickets including the greatest hat trick of all time. All in all the season was amazing we had a great bunch of blokes playing for the right reasons and for each other and positive support from the club. Highlights of the year were Mike Crane making his wicket keeping debut at 51 and doing a great job. Phil and Joel Dowdell opening the bowling together and Matt Scavarelli hitting Wests opening bowler for 3 sixes in the second last over of the grand final. I would like to thank Greg Stacey who is the driving force behind the team and has done an amazing job. Greg does all the behind scenes stuff he collects money, sends email and keeps dodger happy with a perfect scorebook. Let’s hope the next season is bigger and better than ever. The most positive thing heading into next season is that three boys Matt Scavarelli, Alec Adams and Joel Dowdell all want to try their luck in the higher grades. Greg Stacey, Keira 4th Grade Father & Son

The White Lions Before I begin the 2012-13 report on our Inaugural playing season I think I should explain a little of how we as a team was formed and the concept of these matches we play. Mark Johnston first got the idea to form the White Lions from ex players and current playing members of the Keira Cricket Club. His father, Ron was associated with the Long Horns. The Long Horns are ex Viking Rugby players that still go and watch games and are still involved with the Club helping with administration and running of the Club. Before the Keira 150th Anniversary Mark had decided to get in contact with ex Keira players for the celebration. He had contacted them as he wanted to get as many ex players to attend. He also wanted that the ex players should be kept on a mailing list and be given a monthly news letter to keep The Old Guard informed of what was going on in our Club. A great concept and a very good way to create interest. (Once a Lion always a Lion). Mark had got in contact with me looking for photos that I may have had for his father’s book and he formally invited me to the 150th Anniversary. At the 150th I met with so many players I had not seen in years. It was truly a great night and I enjoyed it immensely. My wife had left earlier in the evening and I stayed on talking with all the guys that I'd spent my youth growing up and playing endless summers playing cricket. When I arrived home Grace said to me,” Joe that was the happiest I've seen you in years why don’t you get fit and play again.” I was that hiped up I didn't sleep. Later in the day I rang my friend Bill Moffatt who had been trying for years for me to make a come-back. As soon I told Bill what my wife had said he put me in his side the B.O.B's to play in and over fifty's game against the Gentlemen of Nowra. That game was on Australia day 2012. The 150th was in late October 2011 and I figured I need that time to get fit. Mark had also ask me to return and have a look at how we practice. This was a great way to get fit and my come-back trail had begun.

Keira Annual Report 2012-2013 pg. 14/50

Well Australia Day came around and I fell ill while playing. I managed to get through the game and ended up in Hospital needing bypass surgery. I can honestly say that if not for Mark and Ron getting in contact with me for 150th I would have probably be dead now. Well I played in this game and I played against some legends of cricket of eras gone past. I played with Bob Webster who was the terror of Nowra Rep Cricket of the 70's. After the game which the B.O.B's had lost we all sat around and I listened intently to these older great players and the inherent problems they had with their Clubs. Imagine out of the twenty two players all over fifty playing hard to win a game and after the game socialising and discussing club politics. This is when I got the idea. I thought with the work Mark had done with the mailing list why not get a team of ex Keira and Illawarra players together and form a team. I had earlier brought up a question to the Keira Committee asking if you are a White Lion does it give you equal rights as current playing members. It was deemed that if you are a current financial White Lion you have the same rights as a playing member . So the Playing White Lions was formed. We have had 22 players play this last season. Some are ex Keira Players. Some have been invited players from other Clubs. The concept is not playing to win but to get out on a paddock and play as well as you can against players of a similar age and socialise after the games. Every game has been played in great spirit and new bonding friendships formed. These friendships are not just of the White Lions but of the visiting teams we play. They are truly great days and it my great pleasure to be a White Lion. Well our first game was played at King Gorge on the 28th of October 2012. We had invited a Canberra rep over 60's side to play against us. It was a great day and we won the toss and our Captain Ron Johnston elected to field. Canberra was bowled out for 124 and we passed them 6 wickets down. Pick of bowlers was Stewy Williams, Paul Vallota 3 wickets and ex Port player Phil Dowdell taking a couple wickets. Our best batsman was Scott Stark, Kim McConochie, ex Uni batsmen Steve Coleman, Rick Boatswain and Doug Murphy. Dough getting us home with some big hits over covers. Scott Stark was M.O.M. Canberra went on to be Australian Champions at the Adelaide over 60's Carnival in November. Our next game, we had now become the touring White Lions. This was played at Kenmore Oval Goulburn and was against the Trinity Tigers. This was played on the 11th of the 11th at 1 minute pass 11. Ron won the toss and batted first. We scored 170 runs with four forced retirements. Ex opening Port and Balgownie opening batsmen John Bye played and scored 35. Also Doug Murphy, Chris Betts (ring in) and Kim Mcconochie all getting 35. Goulburn pass us 5 wickets down. The pick of our bowlers was Kim Mcconochie and Chriss Betts. This game also brought University's Club president into the White Lions, Bruce Toswill. Dough Murphy had open the bowling and after two overs he suggested I come up to the stumps because he didn’t think he could bowl fast enough to get the ball to carry to me on the full. I guess all those big hits and quick running between the wickets had taken everything out of the tank. M.O.M for us was Doug and Kim both been awarded bottles of wine. Our first Mid Week game. 5th of December This was our first Bus trip away. We played against the Gosford Cyclones and it brought back many past players . Tim Fitzgerald, Dave Dobinson, Chris Parkes and new convert Paul Constable. It was decided we hire a bus for our three hour trip to Doyalson. We had to pick Parkesy up at Sutherland and then travel north to Pennant Hills to pick up the Fitz. What a trip believe me we all got the Peter Pan syndrome and it was like school kids on a school bus. It was a great day and everyone enjoyed it. It was topped off by beating the Cyclones convincingly. Again our captain Ron won the toss he was having a good run and he elected to field first. ( he didn’t want to be embarrassed by been bowled out cheaply) Well the Cyclones batted and managed a reasonable total of 148. Bruce Toswill opened the bowling and bowled tight. Parkesy was into the wind and the wind must have been blowing a gale because the first ball he balled bounced 6 times before it got to me. Dobbo at 1st slip was cracking up laughing. Moffo at gully with his usual self giving pleasantries to Parkesy. I think Moffo said,” yep not much has changed in 20years.” Everyone just laughed. Well Fitzy, Moffo and Captain Ron bowled really well. Dobbo has still got it and even turned the ball. But the pick of the bowlers was Paul Constable. He was a little wayward at first, but after a few encouraging words from myself he bowled much better. John Bye and I opened the batting John finding the track hard to bat on and was out for 8 runs. Doug Murphy was in next and also found it difficult getting a a duck. I scored 22 and Parkesy and I put on a fifty run partnerships before I was out LBW. Parkesy was retired at 35n.o and that brought Kim in with Bill Moffatt. Kim was given not out clearly nicking the ball to the wicket keeper. In a gesture of good sportsmanship, Kim's next

ball he spooned up the ball and was caught at mid off. Moffo was batting with the Fitz and got us home. Fitzy was M.O.M Now you would think our trip home would be old blokes having a nap. We decided to have our after game meal it was to be at the Doyalson R.S.L. We had a few ales and a meal and a few ales and some more ales . Dobbo our bus driver had pushed the keys in my direction and I had drive home. Well we drove home and Kim was in the front seat with me. We had to drop Fitzy on the way home at Ryde. When we dropped him off Kim said to me, hey Joey how about we do a detour through the Cross. Well we did detour but we went via Newtown. This part of the trip has to be censored for the funny comments that were said. Believed me my head was spinning from all the laughter. We didn’t get home until 2am in the morning. Carol, Ron's wife ringing him asking where he was and wanting to know what he wanted for dinner. We all just cracked up. What a great day I’m truly sorry to all our wives but it was Kim's fault we came home so late. Our next game was against University 16-12-2012. Invited White Lions player Bruce Toswill had enjoyed playing these games so much he had formed a team of ex Uni players. In the change room before the match Paul Constable was presented with his Cap and welcomed as full member of the White Lions. The game was played on the main Uni Oval and another great day was had. Ex Uni First Grade players Rick Chalesworth John Pemperton, Bruce Reed and ex Keira Player Kevin Pallier also played for University. We batted first and we got 168 runs. A pretty good score on a varying bounce wicket. John Bye and myself opened the innings and we got to a good start. It was a stinker of a day and drinks were taken every 10 overs. I was stumped for 24 and John Bye and Bill Moffat were force retirements. Chris Parkes and Dave Dobinson also getting runs. Peter Murphy was caught by a freaky catch with the ball been snatched inches off the ground. We fielded ok but the Uni Batsmen chased down the runs with ease. I recall there opener been dropped on 0 and going on to score a 35 retired n.o. It was the old saying catches win matches. Paul Constable was unlucky not to get a hatrick. His hatrick ball been nicked hitting the back of my gloves and deflecting enough to put Dave Dobinson off to get the wicket for him. Needles to say Paul Bowled very well again. Baza Reed getting Uni home with two overs to spare. M.O.M for us was Bill Moffatt. Bruce Toswill has spoken to me at the end of the season and would like to make this a yearly event. Our next game was planned against the B.O.B's on the 13th of January. It was washed out. For those who don't know B.O.B's stands for the Berry Old Bastards. Our last game of the season was to be White Lions vs The Highlands over Fifties. This game was also dedicated to the memory of Phil Hearn a White Lion who had succumb to cancer and had pass away earlier in the week. Both sides took the field and we had a minute silence in his memory. The opposition was made up of players from the Highlands Cricket teams. They had players from Moss vale Mittagong and Bowral. Nearly all the players don’t get the chance to play on turf. Well Captain Ron finally loss a toss. There Captain decided to field as wanted to show his players how we batted on turf. Paul Vallota opened with John Bye and got us away slowly. Paul wanting to try opening the batting found it hard to pierce the field and was out for 2 runs. Kim in at number 3 was out for a duck and I don’t think the Highlands were learning much as to how to bat on turf. John Bye was out for 30 and Bill Moffatt again was force to retired at 35 coming back at the end of the innings to get a very nice fifty with Captain Ron. Bill hit a six on the last ball to give us a score of 170. Our fielding started great with Paul Vallota taking a great catch. Dodger even quoted as saying that was one of the best catches he had ever seen. Paul was at point and the batsmen hit a powerful square cut hitting down on the ball going a great rate of knots. The ball was hit forward of point. Paul dove full stretch sliding along the ground catching the ball cleanly. Bill Moffatt, Dave Dobinson and Peter Murphy Bowled really well. The highlands got very close to our score with one of the batsmen on forced retirement been allowed back in the final over. They needed 4 runs in six balls and Ron decided to bring Paul Constable back on. We had got a wicket after a confusion of the batsmen been run out. This brought back there gun bat. Ron had gone defensive and was trying to soak up the singles it got to the last ball and they needed 2 runs to win or 1 run for a tie. Bill who was at first slip wanted to move to a wide slip. I had notice him move and said to him where he

Page 16: THIRTY SECOND ANNUAL REPORT - Keira Cricket Clubkeiracc.nsw.cricket.com.au/files/1581/files/Annual Reports/2012-13... · Keira Annual Report 2012-2013 pg. 3/50 OFFICE BEARERS 2011-2012

was going? He said you can cover that area and I refuse him to move wider. Imagine last ball and the Moffo and Joey arguing about where he should field. I pulled rank on him and said the keeper places first slip where he wants him to be. So Bill moved to a standard 1st slip. I could feel the heat and it was from the Moffo fuming. Paul bowled a fast ball outside the off stump the batsmen slashed it nicked the bat flew over the top of my gloves. Moffo leaped up and to the left taking a one handed catch and winning the game for us on the last ball. Everyone ran to Bill congratulating his great catch. As we walked off I said to him you still want to go to a wider slip? We both laughed. Our last game was to be played one week end before the semis, against Canberra at Canberra. But the weather had gone sour and we were washed out. Well this brings me to end of our first Annual report. I dearly like to thank everyone for their efforts and I will be again organising games this season. To the wives thanks so much for letting your husband’s play. I know most of you would think your husbands would never play again. What does the future hold? Well I hope that the White Lions can host our games on Keira Oval. I hope we can use this as a means to keep ex cricketers interested in having a game. The Umpires Association fully supported our games as did Port Kembla and University Cricket Clubs . I am hoping that the C.I. see us as a form to keep players that have done so much work for their Cricket Clubs interested in promoting the game. This form of the game is great for intermixing ex players of the similar age that still enjoy a game of cricket without fear of some young bowler trying to rip there head off on a synthetic pitch. This form of Cricket brings together Cricketers that played against each other once and now play together as a team. This form of Cricket renews old friendships lost after we had retired from playing competitive cricket. To the Keira Cricket Club thanks so much for supporting me. To Ron Johnston thanks for Captaining the side. Last but not very least thanks to Mark Johnston who got in contact with me and making me a part of Keira again. JUNIOR REPORTS

Under 21’s Report After the weather interrupted previous season Keira’s side eagerly looked forward to the 21’s season. After a solid preparation the side with some new blood took on Dapto at Reed park. Darcey Crane Aaron Llatse(3-29)bowled with great shape and Darcey and Robbie unsettled them with their pace. 15 year old Kyle Booth on debut bowled beautiful outswing and was rewarded with the fine figures of 3-10.Troy Coleman bowled very tightly to get 1- 6 off 4. Dapto were rolled for 59. Matt Stark 16* and Dylan Murphy 25* made short work of this target with us finishing on 0-63off 11.3 overs. Both batted very confidently. Our second game was against the highly credentialed Northern Districts team. Their bowlers bowled with pace and bounce and our young batting line up struggled .We lost a steady stream of wickets to see us reach a very shaky 9-64. Dan constable had batted number three and he was 30 not out when joined by number 11 Robbie Gyngell. Dan defended stoutly and Robbie hung in and against the odds they survived and then flourished and then exploded to completely demoralize the Northern Districts side. Amazingly they added 137 for the final wicket with us finishing on 201!! Dan played one of the great innings to finish on 115*. It was an innings of class and maturity. Robbie belied his position in the batting list to score a fabulous 39. It was one of the greatest comebacks in Keira history with this being the highest ever last wicket partnership in all grades. We took the field on a high but the classy northern districts batters proved hard to shift with them reaching 2-66 before Troy Coleman and Dan Constable (again ) ripped the heart out of their batting lineup with 3-33 and 3-20 respectively. Darcy Crane with 2-36 and Aaron Llatse (1-13) were also in the wickets. The fielding was brilliant with some great catches taken and many runs saved in the field. Overall one of the greatest comeback victories that many of the old heads in the crowd have ever witnessed. It was one of the proudest moments I have ever had in my extensive coaching career. Our next game was against Wollongong and a solid all round batting effort highlighted by the skipper James Ellem’s fantastic 53 and well supported by Kieran Richards (17)Aaron Llatse(19)and Darcey Crane (16) saw us reach 9/181. Our fine fielding led by Keiran Richards with a brilliant catch saw us dismiss the young Wollongong side for 88. Best of the bowlers were Dan constable (3-16) , Darcey Crane 2-11 and Aaron Llatse 2-16. This saw us qualify for the semi finals as the top qualifier. A fantastic effort. Unfortunately the weather interrupted the semi versus Helensburgh with us bowling in persistent rain with a ball resembling a piece of soap and our quicks struggling to maintain their footing. The McCrae brothers took their opportunities and batted very well to make the major contribution in their 5-141 of 39 overs. Again Troy 2-19 and Dan 2-33 bowled brilliantly with a wet ball but conditions were most difficult. Jacob Murphy was excellent behind the stumps in most awkward conditions. After a three hour rain delay we resumed our innings in brilliant sunshine on an old style “gluepot”. 9 catches in front of the wicket later we were dismissed for a most disappointing 58.Keiran Richards batted brilliantly for 28 with 2 consecutive massive sixes being the highlight of an innings of concentration and poise.

Overall this was a brilliant season for a fantastic group of young men. James Ellem’s Captaincy was attacking and intelligent and he showed potential as a future leader in our club. Farewelling the under 21’s was James, Troy Coleman and Jordan Theodossiadis. All three have been part of the 21’s since its inception and their skill and enthusiasm will be sorely missed. A huge thank you to the parents who were enthusiastic and most supportive with the afternoon teas being a highlight!! Thanks to the club for its support. Next season should be eagerly awaited for this great group of young lions. Congratulations to all. Steve Coleman (manager)

Under 16A Report

Keira U16A – 2012/2013 Season Report The season started with 29 players registered. The grading process was made easy with each player nominating what grade they wished to play and team mates the wished to play with separating 14 in the A’s and 15 in the B’s. Keira 16A’s – Oliver Dunn, Aaron Llatse, Kyle Booth, Byron Malby, Jayden Cecil, Keiren Richards, Mustapha Elmir, Toby Felvus, Noah Mowbray, Jacob Murphy, Dylan Murphy, Daniel Constable, Daniel Silcox, Tyler Whitton. The season was not marred by wet weather as in previous years and the boys were busy playing two day (60 overs per side), one day (30 overs per side) and T20 fixtures as well as many called into Grade cricket on Saturday afternoons. Daniel Constable, Jacob Murphy, Dylan Murphy, Aaron Llatse, Daniel Silcox, Keiren Richards and Kyle Booth (U15) all represented Illawarra in the DCA competitions with Daniel Constable captaining the victorious U16 Bradman Cup team. During the regular season the team remained undefeated until the final round. This outstanding record was the result of some dominant displays as well as a couple of backs to the wall come from behind wins of which Houdini would have been proud. All players contributed throughout the season with Dan Constable 120no vs Helensburgh/Corrimal and a maiden century to Keiren Richards 100no vs Gerringong providing individual highlights. Rain intervened during the weekend of the semi finals and our abandoned game against Gerringong saw us advance to the Final against Wests. We bowled first and appeared to be suffering from fatigue with not our most polished display in the field. Some tight bowling by openers Booth and J Murphy was complemented by outstanding spells by Oliver Dunn and Mustapher Elmir. Both bowlers took a wicket each and their relentless pressure also resulted in a run out. Wests then consolidated their innings and finally were bowled out for 180 (K Booth 3/39, K Richards 2/16). The following day saw us chase their total down in a controlled and dominant display. Openers Silcox and Llatse put on 17 until Silcox was caught in slips. Constable and Llatse then combined for a match winning 98 run partnership which nullified the Devils attack and swung the game in Keira’s favour. On a slow outfield both batsman showed patience and excellent running between wickets. Llatse was caught in slips for a fine 37 which rounded off a fine season for this talented player. D Murphy (11), Richards (4) and J Murphy (12) all contributed and when Toby Felvus strode confidently to the wicket we were within 10 runs of Wests score. Felvus 6 no struck consecutive cover drives nonchalantly through the field to leave us with two runs to win. Appropriately Constable 89no hit the winning runs with a lofted drive over mid on which sealed victory for the Lions.

This team would never have dreamt it would play in Berry, Maitland and the SCG but thanks to fine performances in the Weet Bix T20 Cup we soared to great heights. We won four consecutive matches to progress to the SCG. Firstly Wests B, then Wests A followed by a quarter final win against Berry in a 42 degree heatwave. The team then travelled to Maitland to play Camden Haven in the semi final. A dominant

display with bat and ball saw us crowned Regional Champions with only Engadine standing in our way of taking out the NSW Title. Although we didn’t win on the hallowed SCG turf, Sunday March 3 will live in the memories of all who played and/or witnessed the match. Each player is to be congratulated on the way they represented Keira Cricket Club throughout this innovative tournament.

I want to thank Niall Murphy who managed the side throughout the season and took over the reigns as coach in Maitland and at other times in my absence. Thanks to Terry Silcox as scorer for this team for 7 consecutive seasons and has assisted both Niall and myself with selections in that time. Thank you to Matt Felvus in his capacity as umpire, scorer and uploader of scores onto MyCricket. Thank you to Allan Dunn, another willing scorer this season and to Liza Booth who provided fruit for all the boys and spectators. A squad of 14 could have been my worst nightmare but with the co-operation and communication between players, parents and myself it has turned out to be an enjoyable season for all involved. Keira Under 16B – Annual Report 2012/13 Season

While I can’t say that coaching the U16B’s this season has been easy, it has been nothing but enjoyable. Every single player in the team brought something different, which not only kept me on my toes, but also made for a season that was far from dull and brought with it many instances that highlight why we play cricket. The team this season came with the complete spectrum of playing styles and attitudes to the game, along with talent and ability at a higher standard than our final placing on the ladder suggests. But at the end of that day, that’s just cricket I guess.

Page 35: THIRTY SECOND ANNUAL REPORT - Keira Cricket Clubkeiracc.nsw.cricket.com.au/files/1581/files/Annual Reports/2012-13... · Keira Annual Report 2012-2013 pg. 3/50 OFFICE BEARERS 2011-2012

Keira Annual Report 2012-2013 pg. 35/50

Where we let ourselves down was our regular inability to bat out the innings. This is by no means a lack of talent or ability, merely an unfortunately consistent series of rash shots. Understandably, this regularly put substantial pressure on our bowling and fielding. This, however, is where our real strength lay. Time and time again we were able to regain ground with tight fielding and aggressive bowling. Round 3 against Wests at Wiseman’s Park is a perfect example of this. After being bowled out for 73, we kept Wests to 41 to win the game, quite probably the best comeback I have been involved with in juniors cricket. In saying that though, there were instances where we dominated with the bat; first and foremost the 289 we compiled against Shellharbour with 3 half centuries including 91 by Nick Hill. While cricket is a team game, there have been a number of individual efforts throughout the season worth noting. Nick Hill batted in the difficult position as opener, and performed consistently well with the bat. He achieved his highest score of 91 against Shellharbour, but this wasn’t his best innings in my opinion. His chanceless 58 n.o., at close to a run a ball against Albion Park in the second innings took that honour. Another player who performed consistently well was Isaac Osborne. Taking the captaincy early in the season, Isaac dependably led from the front. His 63, also against Albion Park in the first innings, against an aggressive bowling attack took us to a defendable total where everyone else collapsed around him. Owen Christie bowled with pace and aggression, and regularly spearheaded our attack, and his statistics demonstrate his effectiveness. Sam Boatswain often opened the bowling, and like Owen, used attack as the best form of defence. While at times wayward, Sam tightened his line as the season progressed to become a very effective bowler. Throughout the season, a number of players have pushed themselves out of their comfort zone to develop as cricketers; and as a coach, this is exactly what I want to see. Towards the end of the season, Will Atkinson attempted the difficult role of wicketkeeper, and Michael McGhie really grew in confidence to attempt opening the batting, and there was definite potential demonstrated on both accounts. Hopefully they follow these roles into future seasons. Conor Kambouris as well really improved as a bowler, and had a safer pair of hands than a lot of people gave him credit for. Ryan Matthews, Sam Lilli, Connor O’Brien and Matt Webster all brought an upbeat enthusiasm and energy to the team which was absolutely appreciated during the rougher parts of the season. As for the rest of the team I haven’t mentioned, every one of you brought something positive to the team and contributed to make the 2012/13 season enjoyable. Of course, thank you to all the parents. This season wouldn’t have happened without the parents ferrying the kids everywhere around the Illawarra every Saturday morning. A special thank you to Rick Boatswain for scoring during the vast majority of games, and to Dave Atkinson for helping out by bowling during training sessions when everyone was a bit worn out. Both are greatly appreciated. So thank you to everyone, players, parents, officials and anyone I’ve missed for helping to make this season of cricket an exceptionally enjoyable one. I look forward to possibly coaching the younger of the players next season, and playing in the same team as the others. Enjoy your off-season, and see everyone for the start of 2013/14!

U14 “As” Annual Report 2012/2013 Minor Premiers (IDCA & South Coast Combined Comp) Weetbix Cup State Finalists WOW, what a fantastic season by this team. This new concept of 20/20 sudden death cricket was very popular. The boys accounted for local rivals Dapto and Thirroul. This put them through to a sudden death game against North Nowra (Southern Zone Winners). After keeping them to a modest score of 120, our guys batted with maturity, reaching the target with 8 balls to spare. Wiseman Park proved a happy hunting ground for Keira. This entitled the boys to play the regional finals at Maitland. I appreciated the dedication by players and parents in travelling to Maitland. The boys looked wonderful in their Keira Shirts and red trousers. It was this weekend in which the team played their best cricket. Daine, Wes and Josh dominated the batting, while all our young bowlers stepped up and bowled tight. Catching and fielding was excellent. We batted the opposition out of both games. For many of the boys it was their first time on turf wickets. Their deserved win earned the guys the right to play at the SCG. SCG Final Despite the loss, it was the highlight of our season and will be a life time memory for all the players and parents. Especially for those who managed to hit a boundary or take a catch or wicket. It was great to see the guys place their kit in the player’s dressing rooms and to look at the honour boards and imagine their names there. Despite the wet weather that weekend, the SCG was in superb condition. The lads enjoyed the experience and celebrated the journey with Powerades kindly provided by NSW Cricket. Minor Premiers It is astonishing how often it happens in many sports. A team can be undefeated all season and fall at the final hurdle. It wasn’t the same team that played our Grand Final. Perhaps we could not get ourselves back from the previous weeks final at the SCG. Perhaps the opposition was too good on the day. For many of our guys it was their first ever cricket Grand Final. I am sure that it will not be their last. It was especially pleasing to read that the Umpire had taken the time to write to the Club and acknowledge the good character of our team during the Grand Final. Sometimes that is more important than winning and I congratulate Parents on the sportsmanship of their children. Memorable Moments

This season was full of magic moments. Some of the more memorable this season included:

Daine Richards

Top score of 93 against Dapto. Six consecutive 50s retired in the Weetbix Cup games including 50 at the

SCG. 4 for 8 bowling during the Grand Final. Daine’s performances earned him the Batting and Bowling

awards.

Louis Whitehouse

A superb 103 not out against Jambergong. This was a reward for hard training and dedication to the

sport.

Caelan Smith

CJ bowled some beautiful off-spin this season. 4 for 37 against Corrimal was part of many good spells.

His stylish batting credited him 47 against Dapto.

Logan Brailey

Countless hours in the nets resulted in Logan bringing up his first 50 not out against Jambergong. Best

bowling of 3 for 3 against Kiama.

Josh Constable Josh was a terrific Captain. He had the respect of the players and shared the workload around the entire team. His 50s in the Weetbix cup suited his aggressive batting style.

Tane Nunn Top score of 72 not out against Kiama. This would have been a hundred but for a team declaration. Wes Van Kempen The Weetbix cup suited Wes’s cavalier approach. His highlight this season was a quick fire 50 in Maitland. Jacob Scard When Scardy or the Scardinator got it right, he knocked over some top batters. He took some wonderful catches especially on the boundary at the SCG. Grady Harland Grady was our most improved this season. He showed great character in preserving with training against older and fast guys. He will benefit in years to come. Johnathan Dale Johno is a great team player. He talked up the boys each and every game. His postive approach resulted in 3 wickets at Maitland. Kaden Horsley Kaden took catches with ease and terrorised batters with fast bowling. Top score of 38 not out in the Grand Final. John Roberts Bowled fast spells and displayed athletic fielding.

Manager Special thanks to our Manager Darren Smith. Darren was a reliable assistant at all training sessions and had plenty to do behind the scenes with organising Weetbix cup fixtures and Illawarra meetings. Many Thanks Daz. Parents Thank you to the parents Jeff Roberts, Leanne Brailey, Darren Smith, Sally and Brian Whitehouse who devoted their time to score for us this season. Team: Sam Bradbury, Joe Buckman, Samuel Cousins, Tom David, Matthew Hobbs, Ryan Neufeld, Sam Okely, Akash Rajpal, Jack Reid, Aiden Roodenrys, Thi Trinh, Kyle Whitton. In our team there were ten boys who were playing their first season of Under 14 cricket, so it was not surprising the opposition teams had a number of boys who were older, stronger and many with more advanced skills. This was particularly noticeable in the four of the seven clubs that did not enter an A team and that these clubs had a number of players who would be of 14A standard. Therefore it was a very creditable effort for the team to finish in fourth place and qualify for the semi finals but unfortunately very wet weather denied the team a chance of qualifying for the final which was won by Balgownie.

Firstly I would like to say a big thankyou to all the parents and children for another successful and thoroughly enjoyable season. In particular I would like to thank the team manager, Andrew Noakes, who worked tirelessly throughout the year and made the job of coaching a pleasure.

In terms of results, this year was almost a mirror of last season, finishing runners up in the DMW Gala Day and finishing 3rd overall on the competition ladder (unfortunately once again our semi-final opportunity was washed away by the rain). In addition, the team also made the semi-finals of the inaugural 20/20 competition, with many of the children getting their first opportunity to play on turf and represent their club against other teams across NSW. A fantastic effort.

All the team contributed throughout the season, with one of the most pleasing aspects being the mateship and support the children had for each other. The children improved greatly over the season and threatened every side they came up against. It was a shame that the weather once again robbed them of any chance in the finals series.

Our bowling was again solid, with line and length a feature. Scott Dowdell, Lachlan Dale and Edward Atkinson in particular worked hard at their bowling all year, improving greatly and coming up with some great personal performances. Aubrey Duncan, Tane Horsley, Sophie Heath and Brandon Silcox were our consistent performers with bat, with Aubrey leading the way and proving very difficult to dislodge. There were also some excellent all-round performances with Aiden Imber, Finn Packer, Joel Noakes and Alexander Baulch frequently contributing with both bat and ball, and in Joshua Debbes case, with the bat and behind the stumps. Joshua evolved over the season into a very competent wicket keeper, a tough job and one I hope he continues to work and excel at. Many of the children posted their top scores for Keira this year and with a little more concentration will score loads of runs in future seasons. Special thanks also to super sub Emily Imber for helping out whenever we found ourselves short.

Fielding improved over the year with all the boys and girls supporting some excellent captaincy from Aubrey Duncan, learning that fielding positions and ‘walking in with enthusiasm’ are aspects of the game that are just as important as batting and bowling. There was some noteworthy ground fielding and classic catches taken, with all the children grabbing half chances at different stages throughout the season and Aiden, Sophie, Scott and Finn leading by example.

The 2012-13 Season was a cracker, with the team really enjoying both their cricket and each others company week in week out. Thankyou again for listening, learning, always doing your best, always playing in the spirit of the game and most of all for the respect you showed the coaching staff, your team mates, your opposition and your parents. Thanks also to all the parents for your guidance and support. The game requires input from a great number of people each week to be successful; it is the engagement of you all, the scorers (thanks Steve, Terry, Phil etc), trainers (thanks Horse, Ian, Wouther), umpires (cheers Noakesy) and the cheer squad on the sideline that makes Keira such a great club to be involved with. Well done everyone and I look forward to seeing all your smiling faces back in Season 2013-14. All the very best for the future, Matt Imber U12 Reds Coach

Each player improved tremendously over the season. Our goal was for each player to try his/her best each game and for us to train like it was a match. Based on those goals, the season was a success. For four players, this was their first year of cricket. As such, there were many new skills to be learnt (such as running between the wickets and bowling on a

proper pitch). It was encouraging to see how much the team improved not only in these skills but also their batting, bowling, and fielding over the course of the season. The players are to be commended on how they played as a team and did not rely on any one player to score runs or take wickets. Each week a different player shone with the ball or bat and it was a real highlight the way they encouraged one another and the spirit in which they played the game. The team’s bowling was outstanding, especially during the latter part of the season. It was not unusual to have only a small number of no balls and wides per game and many bowlers worked hard on bowling a good line and length every ball they delivered. Liam Constable made it easy for others to bat with due to his excellent communication. He worked hard on all aspects of his game and was a great competitor. Becky Eager showed great glove work behind the stumps. She bowled some terrific overs and could trouble any batter with her excellent medium pace. Connor Farrugia had a fine first season. He is developing into a tidy left-handed batsman, with a strong array of leg side shots. Sam Gripton worked hard on his bowling all season and is developing into a fine leg spin bowler. Tate Harland is working hard on his bowling and troubled many batsmen with his pace and accuracy. Ethan Kohen worked hard on his bowling over the season and was able to bowl a tidy line and length on the off stump. He played some swashbuckling innings with the bat. Angus McGoldrick concentrated well in the field, taking some fine catches. His batting and running between the wickets was outstanding. Luke Morgan-Monk could hit the ball hard and long when he concentrated and a highlight of the season was his catching. Max Okely kept very tidily behind the stumps saving lots of extras. His batting improved tremendously over the season. David O’Shea is developing into consistent medium pace bowler and played some lovely hook shots. Zac Seymour took plenty of wickets with his consistent line and length bowling and troubled many batters. Dylan Sozio’s bowling and batting improved over the season. He worked really hard on his game and bowled some tidy overs and hit some lovely leg side shots. Max Taylor’s first season was one of great improvement. He listened well and took advice. His gained confidence in his batting and running between the wickets. Tom Upcroft has a great set of hands, as evidenced in the five catches he took in one game. He is developing into a solid left-handed batsman with sound technique. Thank you to all parents for their support throughout the season, especially Glen Seymour, Paul Constable, and Andrew Gripton for their help with coaching and Alfonsio Sozio, Matt O’Shea, Glen Seymour, and Andrew Gripton for their help with scoring. It was not unusual to see many parents at training helping their children and others. This was no doubt a major factor in the amount of improvement that occurred over the season and made coaching much easier. I look forward to another successful season in 2013-2014 and seeing the children continue to enjoy their cricket with the mighty Lions! Regards Tony Okely U11 Coach

Under 10’s ‘Lion Cubs’ Report

After the fun & games & outstanding form of last year’s cub’s, I was expecting a quieter, more relaxed & ‘routine’ experience from this year’s rookies. Following the first training session, I knew that my pre-season thoughts could not have been any further from the truth. Firstly, they were unquestionably, the loudest U 10 team in the comp . . . and if they were recording & awarding for decibal levels in the field, these cubs would hold a record which could never be broken!! Wow, could the guys yell, scream & appeal. I say the guys, by deliberately excluding ‘Lady Issabella’, along with a couple of other gentlemen, who along with me, were regularly ‘drowned out’ by the mob. Although I am writing this on April 1st, apparently a very unlucky batsman on the field 150m away in an U 12’s game, (Johanson Middle Oval) was given out due to the strength & ferocity of a random appeal generated by our loud speakers (namely Callum, Max & Ethan) along with our mega sub woofers (obviously Eddie & Ky) Not that Rhys, Clancy, Karim, Matty G, Matty R & Lady Issabella said nothing, just getting a word in edgeways on some days was like trying to climb Everest!! It was always loud, but it was always fun!

Secondly, it was never relaxing, because it was always exciting. When you group eleven enthusiastic, charismatic, energy charged individuals together, you create this party like atmosphere. It was never boring. Training was a buzz and a whole lot of fun. Finally, although we learnt many positive habits & routines, our performances throughout the year were well above ‘being routine.’ Everybody at different stages of the season excelled, as a result of the effort & hard work that each player delivered each week at training. My favourite ‘feeling’ during the entire season was during & at the end of the last couple of training sessions of the year, when it was obvious how much everybody had worked on ‘their weaknesses.’ There is nothing more rewarding than seeing players develop before your eyes . . . the progress that had occurred throughout the season was enormous. My only disappointment of the entire season was missing out on the ‘buzz’ of finals sport, not that we could control that. Anyhow there is always next year in the U 11 comp . . . I can hardly wait. Finally, a huge thank you to all your parents for your support & good company throughout the season. Everybody contributed which added to the enjoyment of the season. Specifically, a massive thank you to Andrew, whose effort, energy & enthusiasm was only surpassed by Eddie (sorry, I can’t lie!). Seriously, as we all know, Andrew was instrumental in the organisation & coaching of the team at both training & games. His generous & professional attitude was greatly appreciated by everybody & reflected by the team’s progress. Equally important was Mick Cecil’s effort in regularly submitting scores accurately through to the website . . . again greatly appreciated as it is not this coaches favourite task after being out in the field. Additionally, Pete, Dave, Tony, Paul, Adrian, Jim, Ian, Jamale & a number of wonderful mums (sorry I know this is terrible but I can’t remember all the names) contributed regularly at training (or at games) which in particular, turned Johanson Oval into a lovely place to be on a Thursday afternoon or a Saturday morning. Thank you for your time, support & friendship . . . enjoy the winter & I will hopefully see you next year in the 11’s. Cheers, Darren

PLAYER PROFILES/REPORTS Rhys Cattle: Fantastic first year of comp cricket highlighted by your outstanding all round skills, particularly your wonderful straight hitting after Christmas. Congratulations Rhys on an outstanding 2013 season! Callum Cecil: Sensational bowling all season & the coaches choice for the all important wicket keeping duties for the semi-final, as a result of your focus & skills with the gloves earlier in the season. Congratulations Callum on an outstanding 2013 season! Clancy Duncan: Superb late season form with the bat highlighted your excellent rate of progress. Your bowling was consistent & effective. Congratulations Clancy on an outstanding 2013 season! Karim Elmir: Punishing left handed batsman who developed attacking shots all round the wicket as the season progressed. Consistent bowling all year which was reflected by your excellent figures. Congratulations Karim on an outstanding 2013 season! Matthew Garnero: Repeated last year’s outstanding premiership form with some destructive hitting & fearsome pace bowling & clearly one of the dominant players of the entire competition. Congratulations Matthew on an outstanding 2013 season! Eddie Marning: A wonderful season from “Mr Energiser”, whose unlimited energy & enthusiasm for the game resulted in some magnificent performances with both bat & ball, in addition to his consistence excellence in the field. A pleasure to coach. Congratulations Eddie on an outstanding 2013 season!

Ky Nunn: Improved your batting significantly during the season, displaying a strong defensive technique & some effective legside strokemaking. With more hard work you will develop into a genuine allrounder. Congratulations Ky on an outstanding 2013 season! Max Riolo: The team’s “excitement machine”, who lead the entire competition in the challenging task of running between the wickets, which resulted in dozens of extra runs each week for the ‘Cubs’ total. Additionally, some great performances with both bat & ball…….next year will be massive! Congratulations Max on an outstanding 2013 season! Matt Roberts: Very pleasing progress with Matt’s batting throughout the entire season & his consistent, accurate bowling would have seen him open the bowling in the washed out semi! Congratulations Matt on an outstanding 2013 season! Issabella Savelli: Won the Most Improved Player trophy, in a team where everyone improved “out of sight.” This simply reflected Issabella’s wonderful attitude to the game & the huge progress that she has made with both bat & ball. Congratulations Issabella on an outstanding 2013 season! Ethan Sparks: Ethan’s consistent & accurate bowling during the last part of the year, was one of the team highlights for the season, & a wonderful reflection of his ability to listen & work towards a particular goal. Additionally displayed some good form with the bat. Congratulations Ethan on an outstanding 2013 season!

NOTE – Under 10s Statistics The policy of C I is not to award trophies for batting and bowling in this age group. Keira Cricket Club also adopts this policy as well as not to awarding other individual awards rather, that, at this learning age, our club’s emphasis is on participation and thus we give a trophy to each boy or girl for taking part. This is why there are no under 10 statistics shown in the body of this report.
