MINISTRY WITH THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND:

We are happy to bring the Eucharist or to provide the Anointing of the Sick to the homebound. Contact the parish office.

MINISTRIES TO YOUTH: Religious Education classes for grades Preschool–Gr. 8 are held on Sunday mornings from 9:20–10:40am (Sept.–early May) in the Education Center. High School Youth meets for MIC Nights on Sundays after the 5:30pm Mass from 6:30-8:30pm.

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS: Typically a Funeral Director will contact us to make arrangements. If a relative dies elsewhere, be sure to contact the parish office.

Dear Parishioners:

With all due respect to those who call themselves

“Night owls:” while some creatures naturally gravitate to

the darkness (nocturnal), human beings are fundamental-

ly created for the light (“You have been enlightened by

Christ and are destined to walk as a child of the light”—

Rite of Christian Baptism).

In that spirit, it was wonderful to witness parishioners

and other citizens of Wooster coming out to the panel

addressing the opioid crisis, which was held at our parish

this past Tuesday. The more we, as people of faith, can

help shed light on the multiple causes, symptoms and

long-term impacts of addiction—AND, conversely, of

recovery—on individuals, families and the community,

the further we progress in destigmatizing this scourge

and extending alternatives to those in addiction’s grip.

As November opens, we observe All Hallows Eve, All

Saints and All Souls Days. The Christian view of the

latter two is evident. So, how are we called to under-

stand October 31 from a Christian perspective? We of-

fer the following:

...the practice of masquerade has little to do with

honoring demonic influences, but is instead a form

of play, that pokes fun at fallen spiritual powers and

the excesses of human desire- showing these things

to be, not so much frightening, but silly. The distri-

bution of treats originate in the sharing of resources

at times of festivity, an act of charity through which

private stores of resources were given over to public

use on festival days so that all could enjoy the party.

The association of Halloween with the dead has to

do with the liturgical celebrations of All Saints and

All Souls Days. All Hallow’s Eve (Halloween) is the

festival that begins two great days of solemn, Chris-

tian celebration. Fr. Steve Grunow

All Saints Day, a holy day of obligation for Catholics,

gives us the opportunity to honor the canonical saints as

well as to recognize our own call to sanctity— to daily

holiness of life. Please note the schedule of holyday

Masses here at St. Mary.

All Souls Day is a solemn commemoration of the dead,

a theme that continues throughout the entire month. Lo-

cally, the placement of the Book of the Dead in church

and the presence of photographs of community members

who have died in the past twelve months, as well as the

solemn reading of the names (this year, at the Vigil

Mass on Saturday, November 4) are all intended to aid

us in framing death and mourning within the faith con-

viction: If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe

that we shall also live with him Romans 6:8. Peace,

Book of the Dead This weekend (October 28-29), the Book of the Dead will be placed in the south alcove of the church for the month of Novem-ber. This volume holds names of many of our deceased loved ones. We invite you to page through the book and prayerfully review those names, as well as to add names of additional loved ones who have died so that, as a community, we may carry out our call to remember those who have gone before us and entrust them to the mercy of God.

MINISTRY TO THE HOMEBOUND

Be the Hands of Christ to One Another… People of service are needed to minister to the homebound. Ideally, teams of two will visit parishioners who are unable to leave their homes to at-tend Mass. A commissioned Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist is necessary as the primary mission is to confer the sacrament. As a community founded in Christ, the second priority is to continue to build the relationship and extend Church beyond the walls of the parish.

Would you like to spend time in Adoration but cannot com-mit to a weekly time? We have openings available for a once a month First Friday Adoration. This would take place each First Friday of the month from 7:30pm-7:30am. Going into the winter months, we are looking for additional volunteers throughout the night and especially at 5:30am-6:30am.
