President’s Message
A new year has begun. After the frenetic social whirl of the Christmas season, a new year offers the oppor-tunity to reflect on the year past and contemplate the year to be. The challenge, to you and to me, is to identify what may need to be tweaked in our habits, to
ensure that we continue to live longer, happier and purposeful lives. “We improve the lives of our members and seniors.” A simple yet effective Mission statement. RTO/ERO promotes healthy active living in retirement by connecting its members to numerous resources both in print and on-line. With over 75,000 members in Ontario, RTO/ERO is a vibrant and strong
organization that offers its members an excellent health care plan. The Provincial Health Services and Insurance Committee is vigilant in ensuring that its members are provided with the best plan for the least cost. Presently, an open-enrolment window is in effect until April 30, 2017 to allow those wishing to transfer to do so without the medical questionnaire require-ment. As well, effective January 2017 all members will receive Venngo MemberPerks®, as part of the Extended Health Care Plan.
MemberPerks® is a world-class group discount program that includes savings on everything from health and wellness to entertainment, restaurants, travel and more. Check your email or the Winter edition of Renaissance for instructions on accessing these perks.
District 13 Executive Members are dedicated in their efforts to promote the RTO/ERO Mission Statement. Plans are underway in 2017, for providing our members with opportunities to attend meaningful workshops, and recreational and social activities, to enhance a healthy purpose-driven lifestyle.
Help us, help you! We need to hear from you, how we can better serve you. Call, email or drop us a note and give us your suggestions. Give of your time and contribute your talents. Studies have shown that one of the few things as strongly linked to lasting happiness as exercise, is volunteering.

Join our Executive or serve as a member on one of our many committees.
The Ad Hoc Marketing Committee is looking for new
members. This committee was established last year to promote our organization and to encourage the participation of current members, as well as entice potential members. The process has begun, but it is still a work in progress, and we need members with creative ideas to achieve our goals.
For fun-loving and energetic people who enjoy generating and executing innovative projects, I have just the committee for you to join. In 2018, RTO/ERO is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. We are in the process of setting up a committee whose goal is to provide recognition of RTO/ERO within the membership and the community.
The Recreation Committee hosts annual Golf Tournaments and a Curling Bonspiel, which are well organized and attend-ed. What we need now are new members who are interested in offering opportunities for a variety of activities to promote healthy lifestyles.
Join us at one of our activities or help us plan them. Singer Lee Ann Womack belts out, “If you get the chance to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance!” Come dance with us at
District 13.
Carpe Diem.

Ad Hoc Marketing Report
A very successful Toonie Chit Chat event was held at the Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club. We were able to enjoy the gorgeous fall golf course scenery while listening to a very entertaining guest speaker. Ron Archer shared many stories of his retirement journeys, events and interests. These
included everything from hickory sticks golf clubs to
motorcycle riding.
The Marketing Committee will continue to plan other events that may be of interest to our members and their guests. If you have a particular idea for a Toonie Chit Chat activity please be in touch with Paul Freeman. The committee is also investigating assorted promotional materials and designing a District 13 brochure. Please watch for dates of upcoming meetings and join us for a planning session.
Next Meeting: Feb. 13, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Blessed Sacrament School Paul Freeman, Chair
Political Advocacy Committee (PAC) Report
One of the top priorities of the PAC initiative for this year, is to investigate the impact of the various transportation plans for the city of Hamilton and surrounding communities, on seniors and the disabled. The committee will begin by researching studies already done by the Hamilton Council on Aging (HCoA), the Hamilton Spectator’s series (Code Red), and McMaster University. Possible solutions will then be
addressed. It is the hope of the committee that a highly-focused public discussion on transportation issues, specifically for the aging and disabled, will prompt positive action in
addressing the issues.
The HCoA and members of PAC met on Jan. 9th to explore
ways in which we can advance this initiative, resulting in a commitment by both to continue our dialogue. The next meeting is on Feb. 7
th at Blessed Sacrament School (BSS) at
9:30 AM. Members who are interested in joining the discus-sions are most welcome.
Co-Chairs Paul Freeman and Dave Curto

Project Service-to-Others
District 13’s application for the Provincial Service-to-Others Grant was awarded $3000 by the Provincial Committee for the project “Wonderfully Wild Places - An Experience for those on the Margins”. As the title suggests, this grant will be used to work with marginalized families and children (including newcomers, refugees, the poor, aboriginals and people with mental disabilities) to provide them with educational and environmental programming. This will take place at Cedar Haven Farm, owned by Bill and Lyndia
Hendry, (both RTO/ERO members) who have donated its use to A Rocha Canada, a charitable environmental stewardship organization.
The grant funds will be used to bus approximately 300
children living in the city of Hamilton core, Beasley neighbour-hood area, to the Cedar Haven Farm. Here, the
children will engage in growing vegetables, preparing food and eating together as part of the earth to table program.
Included will be outdoor education, wildlife and food
workshops and classroom style programs. Also a portion of these funds will be used to provide snacks and consumables to those taking part in the nine events for 2017.
We congratulate A Rocha Canada and the Hendrys on the success of their project application and wish them well in all their future endeavours.
An application for a 2017 Project Service-to-Others 2016 grant can be found on the RTO/ERO website at
https://district13.rto-ero.org
Applications must be received before April 1, 2017.
If you require assistance to complete the application please contact:

RTO/ERO OPEN WINDOW
ENROLMENT OPPORTUNITY
At the December 6-7, 2016 meeting of the Health
Services and Insurance Committee (HSIC), it was determined that RTO/ERO will waive the medical evidence requirement and implement an open-enrollment window for any individual insurance plan policyholders wishing to transfer their existing coverage into the RTO/ERO Group Insurance Plans, subject to RTO/ERO membership eligibility. Coverage can commence as early as February 1, 2017.
From now until April 30, 2017, those wishing to transfer from any individual insurance plan will be treated as if they were coming from a group insurance plan and therefore will waive the medical questionnaire requirement. Coverage with RTO/ERO will commence the day following the termination date of their prior insurance.
Please direct insurance enquiries to our administrator,
Johnson Inc., at 1 877 406 9007, and membership enquiries to RTO/ERO at 1 800 361 9888.

Whether we are downsizing or not we all accumulate stuff over
the years. But how much is too much? What is valuable,
heritage or for resale? Does anybody really want your
collection of vintage baby food jars?
Join Fiona Hill (of Fiona Hill Downsizing) to learn effective ways
to reduce clutter, sell the excess and decide what to keep.
GOODWILL COMMITTEE
For several years, the RTO/ERO members of the Goodwill list for the South Mountain have received a Christmas cactus from their Reps. This year the West Mountain representatives joined in the Christmas cactus blitz. This meant 117 seniors members received a plant from RTO/ERO. The organization of this cactus delivery involved many phone calls, and hours in cars doing the drop-offs. The reps managed to recruit some elves to help do this work at this busy season. I’m sure these elves felt rewarded every time they rang a door bell, and the seniors were happy to be remembered by their fellow teachers, each time they looked at the plant.
Those in other areas know that their reps think of them through-out the year with contacts, cards and remembrances on special occasions.
Thank you Goodwill Representatives for keeping in touch and being the “Heart of RTO/ERO”.
The Goodwill Committee is in constant need of new members. If you would like to find out more or become involved in this work, please contact

FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES $150,000 IN NEW GRANTS
The RTO/ERO Foundation is pleased to announce the funding
of its first project addressing the challenges of social isolation in
older adults.
This inaugural grant of $50,000 is awarded to the Hamilton
Council on Aging to support the Hamilton Seniors’ Social
Isolation Project, a collaboration between seven community
organizations. The project aims to measurably reduce the rates
of seniors’ social isolation, where risk factors for isolation – such
as living alone, disability, poor health, language barriers,
poverty, and lack of access to services and supports – are most
prevalent.
Jackie Aird, District Foundation Representative 12
Did you know…? That the Vision care benefit maximum applies every two consecutive calendar years and not every 24 consecutive months? For example, if you purchased new eye glasses in September 2015, you can purchase and claim new glasses any time after January 1, 2017. You do not have to wait until September 2017.
Gayle Manley, Chair, Health Services Insurance Committee

ONE CHANGE: We now require one cheque for each tour. The RTO-ERO revised policy now allows our Tours Commit-tee to book the transportation, lunch and theatre tickets.
You must order seats for each tour separately as orders may be pro-
cessed by a different committee member for each tour. The cost
includes GST, HST and all gratuities. Complete the forms and
send in as soon as the Tour Brochure is received.
Enclose the order form for each tour for which you wish to partici-
pate along with one cheque for that tour. Indicate any dietary
and/or accommodation needs.
Cheques for bus transportation, tickets and lunch/dinner are to be
made payable to “District 13 Tours Committee”. Send your
cheque and application form to the Tour Committee member
four to six weeks before the event. This lead time ensures we
have enough tickets for everyone who wishes to attend and pre-
vents losing deposits or receiving penalties. Applications/
cheques may no longer be received on the day of the trip.
When tickets are involved, they will be distributed on the day of the
trip.
a) Acceptance of your cheque by the Treasurer is confirmation of
your reservation. Cheques will be deposited one month in ad-
vance of the trip.
b) You will be contacted if your application is on a waiting list.
c) Record on your calendar the date and times for each tour in which
you wish to participate.
For most tours we will continue to use Badder Bus Lines in
Binbrook. Pre-boarding at the Binbrook yard may be arranged
by phoning Badder Bus at 905 692-4423.
Please leave the front seat across from the driver for the Tour Or-
ganizer.
If fewer than 45 persons sign up for a tour, the tour may be can-
celled. Exception: Blue Jays game when 40 tickets are ordered.
All applicants will be contacted by the Tour Organizer.
We will consider refunds for cancellations on an individual basis.
Some costs are fixed and cannot be recovered.
THANK YOU!
Looking forward to seeing you on a trip!

Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan
Important Notice: There are 69,000
Pension Plan members who have not received a pension, commuted value payout or refund. Recent Federal legislation requires that they receive a payout at age 71. Approximately 46,920 stopped working and contributing prior to 2000. There are 17,720 inactive members who are 71 or older. The total estimated value of pension is $17 million. The major problem in locating older previous members is a result of name changes, missing addresses and lack of Social Insurance Numbers. (SINs began in 1964). Inactive members who were not employed in education since 1964 do not have a SIN on file. Your help is needed in relaying this information to these members. If you know of anyone who may qualify please have them contact the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan: 1 800 668 0105.

Citizenship Celebrations Who was Sir Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine? If you have recently become a Canadian Citizen, you needed to know the answer to this question, in order to pass the current Citizenship test. As co-chairs of the Citizenship Celebration committee, we have been motivated to dig deeper into the steps a candidate requires to become a Canadian citizen. Each applicant has to reside in Canada as a landed immigrant for 5 years and pass a test designed by the Federal Government. Only then can a successful candidate be sworn in and presented with a certificate of Canadian Citizenship. The court experience is an awe-inspiring experience. If you would like to be a part of this wonderful occasion, consider volunteering. Incidentally, Sir Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine was the first Canadian to become Premier of the United Province of Canada in 1841, and the first head of a responsible government in Canada. This enhancement is not possible, but they could look into the reduced rates available through the MemberPerks® website. I'm sure you’ve heard this before.....
An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to his doctor who was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor who said, 'Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.' The gentleman replied, 'Oh, I haven't told my family yet; I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!'

Retirement Planning Workshop
The RTO/ERO District 13 Retirement Planning Workshop was held on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Winterberry Heights Church with over 180 potential members in attendance.
This workshop was intended for people in the field of education who are considering retirement within the next 5 years. It is open to teachers, office administrators, caretaking and maintenance staff, educational assistants, speech and language pathologists, supervisory staff, principals and vice-principals, college and university faculty as well as private school educators.
Representatives from RTO/ERO Provincial, Johnson Insurance and RTO/ERO District 13 members were responsi-ble for providing information to potential retirees.
The evaluations by those in attendance were positive and complimentary. Special thanks to a very hard-working committee who were instrumental to the success of this workshop: Jackie Aird, Grace Billone, Robert D’Alessandro, Errin Dawson, Paul Freeman, Diana Furry, Lee Hondronicols, and Joanne Weeks.
The Retirement Planning Workshop for 2017 is scheduled for Saturday, November 4, at Winterberry Heights Church. Information is posted on the Provincial Website with registrations currently accepted. Informational flyers will be delivered to schools, colleges, institutions and workplaces in the spring, and again in early fall to reach out to all of our potential members.
Be ambassadors for RTO/ERO and please let your non-retired friends, relatives and acquaintances know of this retirement workshop opportunity. We particularly need you to spread the word that educational support staff are welcome to join RTO.

Celebrating Canada’s Sesquicentennial
Do you have information about a famous, infamous or unknown Canadian hero that you would like to share in the Thirteenth World? If so, submit an article (250 words or less) about this person to editor, Graham Boyce, for inclusion in later newsletter editions. Fun facts and Canadiana will be celebrated throughout 2017!
RWTO/OERO HALDIMAND We’ve had a wonderful start to our new year. With a focus on increasing the “fun factor” and membership, we had our first luncheon on Oct. 3, 2016. Entertainment
was provided by Dr. J (Jeff Ewing), who was a huge success. Our Provincial President, Peggy Stock, presented a short background of RWTO as it related to her own story and the teaching career of her grandmother in the early 1900’s.
Dec. 12, 2016 was the date of our Christmas luncheon, where members were treated to a full turkey dinner, Christmas car-ols and a gift raffle. Supplies were collected for the Women’s Shelter. Attending from RWTO/OERO Hamilton were Hope Leon, President and Linda Sargeant, First Vice-President.
To date, we have had six new retirees attend.
Upcoming events for RWTO/Haldimand are as follows:
Feb. 6, 2017 - Creative Hands Friendship—Mix, Mingle and
Creative Exchange
May 1, 2017 - Summer Reading Book Exchange Program and
Luncheon
June 6-8, 2017 - Annual General Meeting and Conference in Ajax
Oct. 2, 2017 - Autumn Luncheon
Dec. 4, 2017 - Christmas Luncheon
Evelyn Martin, President, RWTO/Haldimand
