THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 15, 2020
THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
In our gospel today, Jesus defies convention and meets alone
with a woman at a well. She is not only a woman, but a Sa-
maritan and an outcast from her village, someone the towns-
people see as a sinner. Jesus asks her for a cup of water, but
in reality he offers her his own “living water”. In doing so he
draws his disciples into the deeper mission of reaching out to
all people, saints and sinners alike. He also teaches the
townspeople not to judge. If Jesus has not condemned this
woman why should those with whom she lives condemn her?
This gospel provides abundant lessons for us today. First,
Jesus never abandons anyone. He offers us his “living water”
every day. We only have to accept it. Second, as Jesus does
not judge, so we must not judge. To be disciples of Christ we
must treat everyone with humility, kindness, generosity, and
compassion.

Pastoral Planning Update for February 27, 2020
The trustees, pastors, retired priests and admin-
istrators of the parishes of the Herkimer County Vicari-
ate met Thursday 2/27/2020 to continue developing a
plan for submission to the Bishop. As we’ve stated be-
fore, the Bishop has asked the vicariate to present a
plan that addresses the sacramental needs of the pa-
rishioners of Herkimer County with limited priest re-
sources.
The committee welcomed the appointment of
new pastor Father Brian Slezak to Holy Family Church
in Little Falls and St. Josephs Church in Dolgeville.
The committee decided after lengthy discussion
to pause in development of a plan to allow the new pas-
tor a chance to settle into his new parishes and to meet
again in the future.

REFLECT AND RESPOND TO SCRIPTURE
First Reading
Early in their 40-year desert journey, the frustrat-ed Israelites tested God by grumbling to Moses, “Is the Lord in our midst or not?” How do you see
our contemporary society testing God today?
Second Reading
Paul speaks boldly of the “peace of God” and the “love of God” achieved through Jesus’ willingness to die for us. How has your
Lenten journey exposed you to the peace and love of God?
Gospel Reading
Jesus revealed himself as the Messiah to the Samaritan woman.
Why do you think Jesus chose her for this revelation?
