May 5, 2019 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 5, 2019 Before the moment of reconciliation, there is an uncomfortable moment of awkwardness and fear. We feel the full impact of our mistake, our sin or our social gaffe. In our uncertainty of forgiveness, we can be anxious and inse- cure. What a relief to hear the words of for- giveness, to experience the restoration of friendship, or to feel the embrace of a loved one! Peter denied Jesus—after bragging that he would die for the Lord! Jesus knew. Peter knew that Jesus knew. Yet in the question, “Do you love me?”, the breach is mended, and the relationship renewed. Jesus reaches out to Peter to affirm his love. Remember, it was the Disciple who Jesus loved that first believed at the tomb and then was first to rec- ognize Jesus on the shore. Love forgives, re- stores, saves, and redeems. Peter’s weakness is overcome by the power of God’s love. It is easy to judge ourselves as unworthy of love, or to be stubborn and not seek for- giveness from God or from others. We prefer to wallow in self-righteousness rather than face the moment of truth when we have to acknowledge our sin and our weakness. Don’t be foolish! Allow for the possibility of recon- ciliation, the power of grace and the strength of love. Make peace with God and with oth- ers. The only thing you lose is your guilt! THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 5, 2019

Before the moment of reconciliation, there is an

uncomfortable moment of awkwardness and fear. We feel the full impact of our mistake, our sin or our social gaffe. In our uncertainty of forgiveness, we can be anxious and inse-cure. What a relief to hear the words of for-giveness, to experience the restoration of friendship, or to feel the embrace of a loved one! Peter denied Jesus—after bragging that he would die for the Lord! Jesus knew. Peter knew that Jesus knew. Yet in the question, “Do you love me?”, the breach is mended, and the relationship renewed. Jesus reaches out to Peter to affirm his love. Remember, it was the Disciple who Jesus loved that first believed at the tomb and then was first to rec-ognize Jesus on the shore. Love forgives, re-stores, saves, and redeems. Peter’s weakness is overcome by the power of God’s love. It is easy to judge ourselves as unworthy of love, or to be stubborn and not seek for-giveness from God or from others. We prefer to wallow in self-righteousness rather than face the moment of truth when we have to acknowledge our sin and our weakness. Don’t be foolish! Allow for the possibility of recon-ciliation, the power of grace and the strength of love. Make peace with God and with oth-ers. The only thing you lose is your guilt!

FROM THE PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL – Are you looking to share your time, talent, and treas-ure? Serving your greater Parish community as a member of the Parish Pastoral Council is a wonderful way to do so! We are seeking a volunteer to fill an open seat which will be available in September. As we approach our 150th year there will be a great deal happening and a perfect time to join us! Your term would be 3 years, and our regular meetings are every 4th Monday of the month, excluding July (unless we have ongoing business to attend to). The criteria for membership are to be able to help accomplish the main task of the Council. Our scope in a nutshell is to investi-gate pastoral matters, to consider them thoroughly, and to propose practical conclusions about them. To be considered for membership one only need be a baptized and confirmed Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church, registered and supporting member of the parish, participate in parish life, in possession of an un-derstanding of and commitment to the Church in accord with the principles of Vatican II, committed to prayer, study, listening, and dialogue, committed to giving the time needed for participation, and noted for your faith, good morals, and prudence. Our membership drive takes place throughout April, but will extend into May, so that anyone interested may have the opportunity to attend a meeting to see what it is like and then decide. If we have multiple candidates inter-ested, we will draw names by lot at our August meeting, and then the term would begin at the September meeting. If you are interested please contact Brian McLaughlin, PPC Chair at [email protected] to submit your name or for any additional information.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS: Registration is happening NOW! Our 2019-2020 calendar for Faith For-mation* classes may be found on our website. Register now for classes in

September. You may register online or in person for our Religious Education programs now and continu-ing through Friday, May 31. Go to: www.stlukes-parish.org or call our office at 508-366-8509.

*FAQ: WHAT IS “FAITH FORMATION”? You may remember it as “Confraternity of Christian Doc-trine” (you know, “CCD”!) or “Sunday School”. Why the name change? The Church now has all volunteer cate-chists, mostly parents who serve as role models and facili-tators of faith once per week for an hour or so. Parents are the primary educators responsible for carrying on the faith traditions and sharing in daily prayers at home. Our clas-ses are held on Sundays and Tuesdays. We provide assis-tance and resources for them to continue with daily “Faith Formation” at home with family.

Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice, and brotherly love. Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace. Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee and defend the great gift of peace. May all peoples of the earth be-comes as brothers and sisters. SAINT LUKE'S ORGANIC GARDENS Would you and your family like to grow your own garden this year? Did you know that Saint Luke's parish has a community garden? It is located on Rte.

135 next to St. Luke's Cemetery. Members of St. Luke's Organic Garden (SLOG) agree to use only organic meth-ods/materials in an effort to improve the quality of soil and air as we grow delicious fresh food. Let Your Voice Be Heard! Say NO to Expanded Abortion Access The Massachusetts State Legislature will consider passing into law two deeply troubling bills this legislative ses-sion. They are identical in text but differ slightly in their titles. The first, (HB 3320) is “An Act removing obstacles and expanding access to women’s reproductive health”. The second, (SB 1209) is “An Act to remove obstacles and expand abortion access”. Combined they share the same acronym – ROE. These bills would: 1) Allow abortions during the nine months of pregnancy for virtually any reason. 2) Eliminate any requirements that abortions be performed in a hospital. 3) Eliminate the requirement that provides medical care to a child who survives an abortion attempt. 4) Eliminate the requirement that a minor under the age of 18 have the consent of a parent, guardian, or the courts. 5) Provide state funding for women who cannot afford the procedure.

How can your voice be heard? Contact your legislators, let them know you are a Massachusetts voter, and say NO on ROE! Log on to www.macatholic.org and follow the links to find contact information for: • Your individual State Senator and Representative via zip code link. • The members of the Joint Committee on Judiciary who will be considering HB 3320. • The member of the Joint Committee on Public Health who will be considering SB 1209. For individuals without internet access, please call the Massachusetts Catholic Conference at 617-746-5630 for legislative contact information. “We, the Roman Catholic Bishops of the four Dioceses of Massachusetts, call on our elected officials to carefully consider the consequences that these bills would bring to the lives of infants, parents, families and the citizens of the Commonwealth. We urge all people of good will, regardless of what faith they practice, to vigorously oppose these extreme measures.”1

collection each week, but that we help the needy first. Please adjust your donation to include both Sharing First and St. Luke’s. Thank you for your generous support.

APRIL 28 supports FR SYLVESTER’S PARISH IN GHANA in the amount of $1216 MAY 5 supports (TODAY) St Luke's Outreach...Spotlight on Prayer Shawl Ministry MAY 12 supports PASTORAL COUNSELING CENTERS OF MASSACHUSETTS

This organization, formerly known as the Assabet Valley Pastoral Counseling Center at Seven Church Street, was established in 1984 by the local churches in Westborough. Its mission is to provide counseling to all per-sons seeking wholeness and renewal from a spiritual perspective. The Board of Directors is made up of pas-tors and members from the local houses of faith. The Director of the Center is a member of the local Inter-faith Clergy Group. The Center provides therapeutic services for children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. Psychological testing and group psychotherapy are also offered. It accepts most forms of insurance and tries to help all seeking help during difficult life experiences regardless of their religious affiliation. The website is pccofma.org.

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER “Peter was distressed that Jesus had said to him a third time, ‘Do you love me?’ and he said to him, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.’” (John 21:17) All of us are challenged to show our love for Jesus and others. Discern how God is calling you to use your time in prayer, your talent in charitable works and your treasure to assist those who in need. Remember that giving is an act of worship and helps advance the mission of our parish and greater Church.

WOMEN'S RETREAT MAY 31, 2019 - JUNE 2, 2019

HOLY FAMILY RETREAT TEAM

God has called all of us to lives of holiness. No Ordi-nary Path will explore ways that we can be attentive, intentional, and cooperative with God’s grace in serv-ing the world. . The retreat begins with a buffet din-ner from 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Friday evening and con-cludes with the celebration of Sunday Eucharist at 10:45 a.m. followed by a hot brunch at noon. Families of retreatants are most welcome to attend the Sunday mass and brunch at no extra charge.

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD The MA Bishops recently released a statement op-posing the ROE Act (inserted in today’s bulletin). Noting that the Act would result in “abortion on de-mand for the full term of pregnancy,” they are urging us "to vigorously oppose these extreme measures.” Several Westborough-area legislators are co-sponsors of the ROE Act, and they need to hear from the con-cerned Catholics in their district. Be a voice for the unborn. For more information, see the Respect Life bulletin board in the vestibule or call Lee @ 508-887-1064.

PARTNERS IN CHARITY

A few weekends ago we had our parish commitment weekend for the 2019 Partners in Charity Appeal. Thank you for those who made a gift, and a special thank you for those who gave for the first time. To date, we have received nearly $80,000 toward our goal of $142,000. This represents just 195 gifts from our parish. To reach our goal we need the support of all 1900 families in the parish. If you have not made your gift or pledge, please prayerfully consider making your pledge and return it to the rectory or place it in the collection basket. If you have misplaced your pledge envelope, there are some in the back of th4e church. With your help we can reach our goal soon.

MEMORIAL MASS FOR SRI LANKA BOMBINGS

Jesus says in the Gospel of Mathew, “Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. ‘Please join us in the memorial service, for the victims of attacks in Sri Lanka, and all victims of religious persecutions. Jesus tells us, “I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” The service will take place at St. Luke the Evangelist Church on 70 West Main St in Westborough, on Friday May 17, 2019 at 7:30 PM. A Collection from this mass will be sent to Sri Lanka for relief efforts.
