PARISH NEWS Dear Parishioners and Friends, Of course the crisis in the Church, the sexual crisis, continues to be on the minds of everyone, and I hope that every day there will be prayer for the Church, the People of God that will continue to struggle to follow Jesus. Here in the parish, again, I would urge everyone to try to sit in on one of the meetings that will be held after each of the English Masses on Saturday 9/29 (5:30pm) and Sunday 9/30. Jay Pinkerton, a Psychotherapist, will lead each one of the sessions, and together we will decide what more we might want to do. I urge all of the women of the parish to try to attend the special Woman’s Meeting on Tuesday 9/18 from 7-9 pm in the Rectory. I will not be there because it is a woman’s meeting, and I am hoping that God’s spirit will move the women of the parish to make the Church of New York and Blessed Sacrament even better. This week of course is a very special week. Tuesday, September 11th marks the 17th Anniversary of that horrible morning, when the skies were beautifully clear and the weather perhaps the best that one could ask for on a September day, when two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers, another into the Pentagon in Washington, and another bound, some thought for the White House, but brought down in Pennsylvania. And suddenly our Nation, but especially our City, felt the terrors and horrors of war. At the Masses on September 11th we will remember all those whose lives were suddenly taken, those families suddenly changed, our Nation challenged. That day, this city was so alive with love, people caring one for the other, and nations throughout the world came to our aid. Let us pray for peace in our world. I urge you, if you can, to attend the Eucharist. Masses here in the parish will be offered at 7:30, 12:10 and 5:30pm. I myself will celebrate the 7:30am Mass, but as many of you know, my nephew, my Godson, was killed in the Towers. I, therefore, will be with my sister and other members of our family at the Memorial and then together we will celebrate a Mass for my nephew at Epiphany Parish at 5:30 in the evening. Again, let us pray for and work towards greater peace. Our citizenship is challenged on Thursday September 13th as it is Primary Day here in New York- every vote counts, as the 2016 election has shown. It takes some time, it costs, but please don’t forget to vote. On Wednesday September

12th, we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary. God the Father is glorified by the Mary’s exalted role in salvation, and thus her name is a name of honor, a holy name, a maternal, name, and a name responsive to the needs of the Church. On Thursday the 13th not only is it primary day, but it is also the Feast of St. John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. John was an outstanding preacher, he defended the poor, he sought the reform of the clergy, he offered many great works, he is one of the 4 great Doctors of the Eastern Church, but he suffered greatly. Twice he was exiled because of royal opposition. On Friday the 14th we celebrate the Fast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which commemorates the finding of the True Cross by St. Helen in 320. Perhaps this could be a day for us to pray in a special way for the Church, suffering so much these days. On Sunday the 16th at the 10AM Mass, the Catechists of the parish will receive a very special blessing- pray with them and pray for our success with Religious Education in our Sunday school program and in our parish school. I am unable to attend this special blessing, as two members of our parish, a Lector and Eucharistic Minister, John Fox and, a choir member, Ricci Poorman, will join themselves in Marriage in Tulsa, Oklahama. About a year ago they asked me to witness their Marriage. Tulsa is not an easy place from which to return, so I will celebrate just the 5:30pm Mass on the 16th. Again, we are a church in pain – let us pray that we will all learn to be Christian – remember those meetings on the 29th and 30th – please make every effort to attend- it is my hope that we can provide child care during those times. Father Duffell

Padre Duffell.
