Fourth Sunday of Advent December 24th, 2017

PARISH NEWS

Dear Parishioners and Friends, On this last day of Advent, as we await the birth of our savior the Lord Jesus Christ, it is my prayer that this Christmas be a time of great blessing for you and your family and the coming New Year be a time of peace and justice. Throughout this past year I have asked myself what would Jesus say, how would Jesus respond to all that has been happening in the world? What do you think? I find Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words about this Feast so relevant today. This Christmas season finds us a rather bewildered human race. We have neither peace within or peace without. Everywhere paralyzing fears harrow people by day and haunt them by night. Our world is sick with war; everywhere we turn we see its ominous possibilities. And yet, my friends, the Christmas hope for peace and goodwill towards men can no longer be dismissed as a kind of pious dream of some utopia. If we don’t have good will towards men in this world, we will destroy ourselves by the misuse of our own instruments and our own power. This Christmas season extends through the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on January 8. The tree, flowers, and decorations remain until then. May each of us do the best we can to keep the spirit of Christmas alive in our homes through the 8th of January. The Feast of Christmas itself is an 8 day celebration, and during this week we commemorate some other very special Feasts. The 26th is the Feast of Stephen the first deacon and martyr, stoned to death by a mob which included Saul of Tarsus, who ultimately became Paul. During his trial and martyrdom, Stephen had a vision of heaven, a vision of God’s presence in the difficult but triumphant moment where, stripped of everything else, faith, hope, and charity remained. Thank you in a very special way to our Deacon here at Blessed Sacrament, Scott Reisinger. On the 27th we celebrate the Feast of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist, the disciple called the “beloved” because of his close relationship with Jesus. Throughout his Gospel, the son of Zebedee makes an appearance at significant moments in Jesus’ life; at the

Last Supper, in the Garden, at the foot of Cross, and in the Upper Room. His account of the Gospel is quite different from the accounts of Matthew, Mark, and Luke due to his divine emphasis which is proclaimed through symbolic language and poetic form. On Thursday, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Innocents. King Herod the Great, fearing for his throne after hearing of the birth of Jesus, ordered the killing of the first born sons of Israel. Think of these infants helpless, caught up in the power struggle of their time. Think and pray for those today helplessly caught between the powers of this world. Finally, next Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, a devotional Feast that places before us the unity and love so evident in the family of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. We pray that our families might become more and more places of love, learning, safety, encouragement, and embrace of God’s ways. I wish each of you a happy Christmas and a healthy New Year, and, as always, let us pray for peace, and act more faithfully according to its demands. Father Duffell

Fourth Sunday of Advent December 24th, 2017

Rev D’angelo J.
