GOOD NEWSActs z::.4, zz-33 | t Peter r:r7-zr / Luke z4:r3-35
The story of the road to Emmaus is a favorite among retreat leaders because
they can pair off participants to talk about hopes, fears, and dreams while
they take a long walk or find a safe place to sit.
l've heard people tell dark secrets and expose long-hidden resentments on
such walks. lt seems the act of walking loosens the tongue and allows us to
look at scenery while we bring forth the courage to tell what is happening in
our lives.
So it doesn't surprise me at allthat Jesus makes his first post-resurrection
appearance in Luke to two people who are walking and talking. Believing
him to be a stranger, the disciples are free to tell everything about their fear,
their anger, their dashed hopes, and their confusion over the empty tomb.
They are able to be themselves, and Jesus does what they need him to do-he listens and hears them. Then something remarkable happens. He opens their minds and hearts to
the revelation of God in Scripture. He gives them a new way of seeing' They
are eager to know more. They beg him to stay and share a meal. And, finally,
they know him in the breaking of the bread and the breaking open of their
hearLs.
Maybe there's a lesson here for us. When we're weary or worried, perhaps
we can take a walk on our imaginary road and tell Jesus everything that has
happened, let him love us, and let him help us remember the Scriptures.
And, hearts lightened, we can know him again in the breaking of the bread.

d e ar PAD Rf,
4-\ My daughter is W0,AA0 in debt. On her la* payday, afriend\ol asked to bonow $500for hk h'ouse payment. A[y daugltter lent
him the mofiey because she heard a reading at Mass that f you
haue money and yourfriend needs it, you should lend it. Is that
what Jaus would haue my daugltter do in her current
situatian?
If your daughter had $600 she didn't need immediately
and was quite sure her friend would pay it back in a timely
fashion, then yes, it was good for your daughter to have lent
the money in that situation- It's a sign of your daughter's
generosiry and kindness. But there are a lot of "ifs" in the above scenario. If
someone had lent that money to your daughter and, because
she then lent it to her friend, the lender was denied /ler
pa)rynent in a timely fashion, your daughter shouldn't have
lent the money.Putting this idea in simpler terms, if I have trrvo chickens
and I need only one for supper, I can give a hungry person
the extra chicken. But I needn't glve away a1l that I have to
Ged the hungry, thus becoming hungry mysell If I have
only one chicken, I don't have to give it away.'We're called to be generous, but not at the expense of our
orrun well-being. Lending money is a different issue because
it seems everyone owes money. If your daughter is paying
her debts in a timely fashion, she's not obligated to pay
more, and she can continue to be generous.
