My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

What happens to a young girl’s or woman’s heart when she is hurt by a man? Last week, we looked at how the early books of the Bible describe the ongoing progression of the sin of our first parents and how that rupture of their unity continued in their children, grandchildren, and all generations up to and including our own today. You see, this “Gender Wars” reality didn’t stop after Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Rachel, and finally Joseph and his brothers, — no, not too long ago, in 2011, you might remember a musician with the nickname Gotye (Wouter "Wally" De Backer, a Belgian-born Australian multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter) who recorded a song entitled “Somebody That I Used To Know” featuring another singer by the name of Kimbra, which won the Grammy Award, Record of the Year, in 2013. This haunting song captures the discord that exists at the heart of a breakup between a man and a woman.

Even more recently, just this past July (in the UK) and August (in the US), 2017, a new young singer by the name of Dua Lipa released her song entitled “New Rules.” Lipa describes her musical style as “dark pop,” and she also captures the heartache and the response a young woman feels when her heart has been broken in a relationship. And what is the response to the break up that she sings about? Yes, her response is the title of the song: New Rules (reminds me of the 10 commandments!). Both of these songs are easily searched and found on YouTube.

Here are some excerpts from the lyrics to Dua Lipa’s recent song, “New Rules:”

Talkin' in my sleep at night, Makin' myself crazy, Wrote it down and read it out, Hopin' it would save me. Oh, he makes me feel like nobody else, But my love, he doesn't love me, So I tell myself,

[REFRAIN:] One, don't pick up the phone, You know he's only calling 'cause he's drunk and alone. Two, don't let him in, You have to kick him out again. Three, don't be his friend, You know you're gonna wake up in his bed in the morning, And if you're under him, You ain't getting over him.

I've got new rules, I count 'em, I've gotta tell them to myself. I keep pushin' forwards, But he keeps pullin' me backwards. Now I'm standing back from it, I finally see the pattern (I never learn, I never learn). But my love, he doesn't love me, So I tell myself, I do, I do, I do [REFRAIN:] One, don't pick up the phone…

Practice makes perfect, I'm still tryna' learn it by heart. Eat, sleep, and breathe it, Rehearse and repeat it 'cause I … [REFRAIN]

I've got new rules, I count 'em, I've gotta tell them to myself. Don't let him in, don't let him in, Don't be his friend, don't be his friend. Don't let him in, don't let him in, Don't be his friend, don't be his friend. You ain't getting over him.

In these lyrics, Lipa states a list of rules to get over a former boyfriend, and many music critics positively labelling it as a break-up and female empowerment anthem. But you can hear the heartache behind these lyrics, her torn heart, wanting to separate but yet being drawn to him (“You ain’t getting over him”). “New Rules” are like walls to protect a broken, wounded heart. Why does such a song reach number one in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium (Flanders), Ireland, Israel and Romania, while peaking within the top ten in Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and several other countries? “New Rules” has also entered the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking so far at number 15, her first top 20 in this country. Why?

Why all of this “Pop Culture” stuff? Because our human relationships, especially between male and female, need healing, God’s healing — and this is true today just as much as it was in generations past, even all the way back to Adam and Eve. Heartache, longing, uniting, are sung about still today — and you know, our sexuality is so powerful that it would be inconceivable if God said nothing about such an essential part of human reality. It would also be inconceivable if God had not given us a way of healing.

The original sin of Adam and Eve seems constantly to be repeated. After Moses, the Israelites continue being unfaithful to God and to one another, the kingship established by God in King David is contaminated by David’s adultery with Bathsheba and murder of her husband, and Jesus’ genealogy in the Gospel of Matthew continues pointing out the way God’s plan is not thwarted by men and women who stray yet return to God.

Let us open our hearts to the light, for God does not wish anyone to walk, or live, in darkness! Lord Jesus, come, heal us! Marana-tha!

Simbang Gabi MASS DECEMBER 23, 2017 at 5:30pm

Simbang Gabi literally means “evening or night mass.” In practice, it refers to the Philippine Catholic tradition of celebrating a “novena”, a series of nine Advent evening masses from Dec. 15 through Dec. 23, leading to Christmas Day. (In the Philippines, the dates are from Dec. 16-24 since Simbang Gabi is held in the early morning.) The Simbang Gabi originated from the Missa Aurea (Golden mass or Angel’s mass) tradition, introduced to the Philippines by the Spanish friars at the start of the Catholic evangelization of the islands. In 1587, Friar Diego Soria petitioned Pope Sixtus V for permission to celebrate these Masses outdoors due to such massive crowds coming to worship. The request was granted through a rescript, and in the 17th century, the Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo or Misa de Aguinaldo - as the practice is variously referred to by the Catholic populace in the Philippines - became a permanent fixture in the Philippine Catholic religious traditions. Originally (and still observed in most places in the Philippines), the Simbang Gabi Masses were held at the

crack of dawn - at 4:00 or 5:00 am, when the roosters crowed to announce the dawn of a new day, hence the name, Misa de Gallo (gallo=rooster), and when families of farmers and fishermen began or ended their day. Farmers began working in their fields early to avoid the intense heat, while the fishermen who spent all night at sea came home early to sell their catch. So, at the first sound of dawn, the local bands started playing traditional carols all over town and church bells pealed to summon everyone for the Simbang Gabi. Families would walk to the church passing by homes with lighted parol or lanterns fashioned out of bamboo and colored paper. In the darkness of the night, we sing with joyful longing for the coming of the Savior, the Light of the world. In the deadly darkness of sin, we hope eagerly for the coming of the Savior, the Life of the world. In Simbang Gabi, we join Mary and Joseph, all other saints, prophets, and the Christian faithful throughout history in joyfully welcoming the Savior who is the Light and the Life of the world.

Family Connection

In family life, we learn to trust other people for pro-tection and care. This experience of trust within the family enables children to believe us when we testify about our faith in Jesus. John the Baptist was be-lieved by those who heard him because he helped them to recognize Jesus in their midst. In our family life, we hope and pray that we lead one another to recognize Jesus’ presence in our world.

As you gather as a family, recall that during the Ad-vent season we are invited to pay particular attention to the signs of Jesus’ presence in our world. Consider some of the signs of Jesus’ presence that you have experienced. During Advent, we remember how John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus. Read together today’s Gospel, John 1:6-8,19-28. Discuss the signs

of Jesus’ presence in our world that you named and explain what these signs tell us about God and God’s love for us. Pray together that your family will be led to recognize that Jesus is present among us. Read and pray together the psalm for today’s Mass, the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55).

Advent Family Prayer During Advent, we not only prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus, but we also check in to see if we are doing all the things that will keep us ready to receive Jesus when he comes again. Talk to your family about how you are doing in attending to your spiritual life as a family. Recommit yourselves to praying daily, reading Scripture, and staying faithful to God’s commandments. Pray together that through this Advent season your family will be more prepared to receive Jesus when he comes again.

God of Love,

Your son, Jesus, is your greatest gift to us. He is a sign of your love.

Help us walk in that love during the weeks of Advent, As we wait and prepare for his coming.

The State of Illinois recently passed the Invest in Kids Act to help provide families funding to attend the private school of their choice. The Tax Credit Scholarship Program begins in January 2018 and will automatically expire January 2023 unless it is extended by the legislature.

To participate in the program the parent/custodian and student: must select a qualified school and apply for admission comply with the qualified school’s published policies; and apply for a scholarship through the Scholarship Granting Organization authorize the Scholarship Granting Organization to access information needed for income eligibility

determinations.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN

We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION

Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT

MARRIAGE

Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.

Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.

SACRAMENTS OF HEALING

RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, Wednesday evening, 5:45-6:45pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.

ANOINTING

Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain. I would like to have my house blessed.

St. Andrew the Apostle We Care Food Pantry

The St. Andrew We Care Food Pantry is open every Wednesday from 10:00 am. until 12:30 p.m. for any eligible family in Romeoville in need of food assistance.

The requirements to receive food commodities from the Pantry is that a valid State of Illinois Driver's License or State of Illinois ID and a current utility bill with your Romeoville address must be presented at the time of sign-in. Due to the poor economy, loss of employment or housing, and if you are currently residing with a Romeoville family, you may bring your valid Illinois Driver’s License or State ID AND a current utility bill from the Romeoville residents you are living with. Some proof of residency must be established. This must be brought to the Pantry each time you come for food assistance.
