Sunday in Ordinary Time - A

Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle

January 25

One of the greatest moments in Church history and the all time ultimate ‘game-changer’ was the conversion of Paul: for one of the

Church’s worst enemies became one of her greatest teachers! And Paul’s hell-bent quest to destroy the infant Church led Jesus to fully identify Himself with His new Body, the Church; for from heaven the Risen Lord did not ask Saul, later known as Paul, why are you persecuting my disciples, my followers or my friends; Christ asked, “Why are you persecuting ME!” [Acts 9:4;

22:7] Let’s reflect on the orations for the Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle.

Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle - Collect

O God, who taught the whole world through the preaching of the blessed Apostle Paul, draw us, we pray, nearer to you through the example of him whose conversion we celebrate today, and so make us witnesses to your truth in the world.

Teacher Of The World. While scholars disagree on the actual numbers, most say Saint Paul wrote - or was the inspiration behind - 13 of the New Testament’s 27 books; that means almost 50% of all our biblical information about Jesus comes from Paul! However, what cannot be disputed or dismissed is the radical impact of Paul’s miraculous conversion which the Bible records three times, and his total, death-defying dedication to Christ and His Church! Saint Paul certainly earned the title ‘Teacher of the World!’

Paul was raised from birth as what we would call an Orthodox Jew, and became a learned

scholar of the law or Pharisee. But Paul could not accept that an itinerant preacher from the Galilean backwaters was the long-awaited Messiah and Israel’s Savior; nor could he even consider that Jesus was God’s Son or our God in human form! It took a divine revelation to convert Paul! We have no idea if Paul was literally knocked off his horse; all the Bible says is that he fell to the ground on the road to Damascus. Then Paul received the guidance, support and intercession of the Church to complete his conversion - and so do we!

Conversion of Saint Paul - Prayer over the Offerings

As we celebrate the divine mysteries, O Lord, we pray, may the Spirit fill us

with that light of faith with which he constantly enlightened the blessed Apostle Paul

for the spreading of your glory.

Enlightened By The Holy Spirit. Although the Holy Spirit is called down upon us so often, many people treat the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity as a second class citizen; some seem to even forget the Spirit exists, or is co-eternal with the Father and Son, one God! Even that great liturgical hymn, the Gloria, sung or recited at every Sunday except in Advent and Lent, and on special Solemnities and Feast days even during Advent and Lent, all the Holy Spirit gets is a four-word honorable mention, “with the Holy Spirit.” Yet without the Holy Spirit and His many gifts, about which Saint Paul wrote so eloquently in many of his Letters, our faith would be dead!

The Holy Spirit is called down upon us so often: at Baptism and Confirmation; in the Blessing at the end of Mass and at other times; in the Absolution in Penance and the Anointing of the Sick; in Holy Orders and Matrimony. The Holy Spirit is called down upon the offerings of bread and wine before they are consecrated. When was the last time you prayed to the Holy Spirit?

Conversion of Saint Paul - Prayer after Communion

May the Sacrament we have received, O Lord our God, stir up in us that fire of charity

with which the blessed Apostle Paul burned ardently as he bore his concern

for all the Churches.

Concern For All The Churches. As we suffer under the scandal of Christian DIS-unity, we wisely turn to Paul who ‘burned ardently’ with concern for the safety, wellbeing and unity of the Church. Through Letters, speeches, and one-on-one debates, even to correct Saint Peter, Saint Paul never backed down when someone was causing a split or any form of strife in the Church; Paul had harsh words for such agitators and church-wreckers; read it in Galatians 5:12, if you dare! How do you promote Christian unity?

With God’s love and my prayers,

Reverend Michael J. Kreder

ARCHBISHOP'S ANNUAL APPEAL

"When I called, you answered"

Next week, our parish will kick off the

2014 Archbishop's Annual Appeal. Before we

begin the new appeal, it's important that our

parishioners know that in 2013, we received a

PARISH REBATE in the amount of $42,414.15 all because of

your generosity!

Last year's theme, We Are One Body sought to unify us

all in the Catholic faith and to give back to those who are in

need. This year's theme of the AAA is "When I called, you

answered." This is a perfect opportunity for us to reflect on

God's generosity to us.

This year's AAA will continue to support the many good

works of the ministries throughout the Archdiocese. This

appeal is meant to instill in us all a heart and spirit of

gratitude, reminding us that God will always be there.

Through this campaign, we are called on to answer the cry of

the poor; to help those who are in need; to feed, shelter,

clothe, teach, and bring the Faith to those who are in need of

hearing the good news of the Gospel. Thousands of people

in the four counties served by the Archdiocese of Newark are

assisted each year through various programs and ministries

funded by the Appeal. Our parish also benefits by receiving a

rebate from the appeal if it exceeds its goal.

Please come prepared to make as generous of a pledge

as you are able. Thank you in advance for your support of the

Archbishop's Annual Appeal, which helps bring to reality the

experience of welcome and affirmation for individuals and

families living with disabilities in the Archdiocese of Newark.

Catholic Schools Week 2014

January 26 to February 1, 2014

Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service

Saint Mary High School Rutherford, New Jersey

“You too, dear young people, can be joyful witnesses of His love, courageous witnesses of His Gospel,

carrying to this world a ray of His light.” Pope Francis

The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2014 is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” The annual observance starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2014 is January 26 to February 1. Saint Mary High School will celebrate Catholic Schools Week with a Mass, motivational speakers, and other fun activities for students, families, parishioners, and the community at large.

The 2014 theme was developed with a long term focus in mind and will be used for at least three years. This consistency of a theme will allow students and faculty to engage in activities in an ongoing basis that really encompass the whole vision of Catholic Schools Week. It’s especially appropriate that this new brand will mark National Catholic Schools Week 2014 – the 40th anniversary of this annual event.

The theme encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of a Catholic education. First, Saint Mary is a community—small families in their own right, but also members of the larger community of home, church, city and nation. Faith, knowledge and service are three measures by which any Catholic school can and should be judged.

At St. Mary High School we instill in our students that the teachings of Jesus instruct us to

respect the dignity and sacredness of the individuals; direct us to accept stewardship by

developing our abilities; call us to serve the needs of others and invite us to build the kingdom

of God in our world.

Saint Mary’s is a small school. But, that can be a good thing; the teachers know their students

and can work with them on a personal level. Our school is like a second family to the students. This

family is very faith oriented. We go to Mass, have prayer services, and take theology courses, all of

which help students to strengthen their relationship with God.

Knowledge is very important here at Saint Mary. As a member of the Math Honor Society I,

along with other members, help students that are struggling in math. We each stay after school and help

tutor those who need it so that they do well in class. The same is also done for Spanish Honor Society.

Teachers are almost always available after school for extra help whenever it is needed so that students

can continue to do well in class and keep their grades up.

Service is a big part of our school culture. All students are required to complete service hours for

graduation but most go above and beyond as there are many ways to give to others. There has been an

alternative Spring Break trip organized for the past few years where students and teachers travel to

Kentucky for the Christian Appalachian Project; there they help build houses for those living in poverty. I

am excited to be going this year as I have heard what an eye-opening and humbling experience it has

been. We also participated in Habitat for Humanity last year. Two teachers and a group of students

including myself drove down to Paterson to help build and clean up houses for those less fortunate than

ourselves. The St. Joseph’s Club is a service club at our school. Members of the club help set up tables

for different events, decorate and paint the school, organize food drives, and pitch in anywhere we can.

Service is an outward expression of our faith and it also makes us, as well as those we serve, feel good;

which is why it’s such a cornerstone of a Saint Mary education.

Arianne Bohinek is a graduating senior who

aspires to continue her education in the field

of forensic psychology and pursue a career

helping others and society. She truly

exemplifies what Saint Mary High School

hopes to instill in each of their students.

What The Academy at Saint Mary means to me!

Having been a parishioner here for more than 35 years and a

catechist and teacher for more than 25, St. Mary parish has been

a comforting community for me. The Academy has been dear to

my heart and it is especially gratifying to see the dedication of

our Pastor, Fr. Michael Kreder, to our parish and schools. Fr.

Mike’s commitment to our schools is reflected by his focus on

continually upgrading our facilities, which are now safer, more

attractive and technologically advanced than ever before! And

all of this has been accomplished without putting our schools in

debt! Under his guidance, our liturgies have been meaningful

celebrations of our Catholic Tradition while including our children

at every opportunity. It has been a great honor to be a part of

this thriving community here at St. Mary! - B e t t y H a t l e r

I have been going to the Academy at Saint Mary since

Kindergarten. Since then, I’ve made many great friends that I

hope to keep in touch with as the years go by. Every year

academics have gotten harder but my teachers have always

made it easy to understand what we are working on. I feel that

St. Mary has given me a better understanding of my faith and

what it means to be a Christian. At St. Mary, it feels like home

because I know everyone and look forward to coming every day.

I think that St. Mary has given me a good academic foundation

which will help me in high school next year and in the future.

- Megan Dowden

My daughter has been attending the Academy at Saint Mary from

PreK-3 to her present Grade. She has absolutely loved every

teacher and every teacher has truly shown the same in return.

The faculty and administration provide a very caring, nurturing

and positive learning atmosphere that I can see and feel every

day. I have seen her grow in so many ways during her

attendance at The Academy at Saint Mary. The community,

educational and spiritual experience that the Academy at Saint

Mary provides is aligned with it’s mission of preparing young

people to contribute to the common good by becoming active

and caring members of the communities in which they live. I am

very grateful and would like to thank all of the teachers and

administration that make all this happen!

- Patrick Sullivan

For the past five years, The Academy at Saint Mary has been a

second home for my children. It has given them the foundation

to build a bright future, and it allows them to grow not only

intellectually but spiritually. In addition to the excellent

academics, my children and I have built friendships that will last

a lifetime. - Lisa DiDomenico

St. Mary for my children is like another mother. They are learning

not only book knowledge but how to become responsible and

good human beings. The school is helping them to build their

character and values which will take them far in their future.

Thanks for doing a great job!

- Veerraj Parmar and Shaktiraj Parmar

I have been attending the Academy at Saint Mary since

Kindergarten. I am now in 7 grade. I have created very friendlyth

relationships with my fellow students as well as the teachers I’ve

had through the years. Every day I come to school and learn

something new. I now think I am well prepared for high school

and, it is all thanks to the Academy and the excellent teachers

that have taught me throughout my elementary school career.

This is the place to be! - Nicholas DeGennaro

The Academy at Saint Mary means to me . . . pride, identity and

a genuine sense of belonging. It means family, friends and a

religious community. The Academy is an environment where the

teachers and staff truly care, support, love and enjoy being part

of the Academy. My children love and are excited about learning

and coming to school. And that is truly what The Academy at

Saint Mary means to me. - Annette Ramos

From the first day that our son Michael started kindergarten, we

knew we had made the right decision to have him attend The

Academy at Saint Mary. It was not too difficult as our daughter

Analy graduated here a few years back. Our children felt

comfortable and at home and we knew that they were getting a

great education, both with their studies as well as religious

education. - The Pugliese Family

Our children have been blessed with articulate, caring, and

talented teachers at The Academy at Saint Mary. We believe the

foundation they have received here will serve to complement our

efforts in their intellectual development and the formation of

their faith. - Elizabeth and Dennis Corwin

Family and tradition. For us, Saint Mary is family and for over 75

years our family has been a part of the Saint Mary tradition. The

school, while promoting spiritual growth, is grounded in the

highest educational standards. The teachers are consummate

professionals and the families are caring and committed. In this

day and age, it is great to say that we feel secure and at home

when we come to school and we’re proud that all of us have

grown through what we’ve learned and the family we’ve made

at Saint Mary. - Bobbi Weigel

The Academy at Saint Mary provides a caring, nurturing and

family like atmosphere for our children. Our children have

made lasting bonds here which will be with them forever.

- Kim and Virgil Minnick

As a parent the Academy of Saint Mary is a quality Catholic

education. The teachers and staff are extremely dedicated to

the children. If my child needs help teachers are staff are

available before and after school. To me, it is more than a

school, it’s a family. To m y son George, who is in the 4th

grade, the Academy is fun. He has lots friends and he likes

that he knows everyone. My son Thomas graduated from the

Academy in June. To him it got him ready for High School.

The Academy at Saint Mary left him with many great

friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

- Doreen Kasper

The Academy at Saint Mary is a close knit community of

students, teachers and administrators in an environment that

is conducive to learning and growing spiritually, emotionally

and socially. - Stacy Rushnak

I’m a third grader at the Academy at Saint Mary. I have been

here for three years. This school means everything to me! It

is the best school I have gone to! - James Greig

The Academy at Saint Mary is a place where you can have lots

of fun! You can meet so many friends. The teachers and

principal are super nice. You can learn so much here. The

Academy at Saint Mary is awesome! -Hannah Janiec

As a new member of the community, I must say our

experience has far exceeded any and all expectations. My

boys are not treated as just students in a school; they are

embraced as members of a family. A heartfelt thank you to all

who enrich my children’s lives on a daily basis!

- Dominique Policastro
