Using a wedding planner

It’s the biggest day of your life and you want it to be perfect and memorable.

At first glance hiring a wedding planner may seem a little extravagant but in the long term it will save you time, money and of course stress!

So what should you look for? What questions should you ask?

Firstly, do a little research and select the best 2 or 3 that appeal to you. Look at their website; does it have

testimonials and photographs?

Take a look at their ‘About Us’ tab, this should give you an idea of how long they’ve been a wedding planner

and what their previous experience has been. Once you’re happy with what you’ve seen, arrange to meet

them for coffee or invite them round to meet you and your fiancé at home. This is incredibly important,

as this person is planning the most important day of your life, so you have to get on and feel a synergy

between you.

The best wedding planners will listen to what you want your day to be and be able to advise you on a

timeline of what should be done and when. They’ll work within your budget and will have the best suppliers

already on board, giving you peace of mind that you are getting first class value for money.

Choosing a wedding venueSelecting the right venue for your wedding is probably one of the most important and time-consuming decisions you will be making. Think about the style of wedding you would like. City, country or coastal? Modern or traditional?

By answering these questions, it will help you in considering venues and help you to style and theme yourdream day.

When you have made a short list of venues or have selected one in particular, arrange to visit and meet withthe venue’s wedding coordinator. Ask them to show you around the venue and explain the various optionsavailable to you. Don’t be afraid to ask them as many questions as you feel necessary. Your assessment oftheir response will tell you how flexible and helpful they will be if you go ahead with a booking. You willneed to check the availability of dates with the venue, registrar and close family before making a bookingand paying your deposit. It is worth asking the wedding coordinator if your selected date can be put on hold for a few days whilst you make these arrangements. When confirming your provisional booking, alwaysask for a contract and check the terms carefully.

Top Tip: Staying a night at your shortlisted venue will allow you to see at first hand the level of service and the quality of the food before booking. This is a small price to pay in relation to the cost of the venueand will allow you to assess what you and your guests will experience on the day. Some venues may evenoffer this at a reduced rate.

Once your venue is booked, you can then begin to put the rest of your wedding plans in place.

Close liaison with your wedding coordinator throughout the planning process, especially during the weeksleading up to the wedding, is very important to ensure that everything is properly planned between youand the venue.

It is always advisable to take out wedding insurance to cover your costs in case of illness or other unforeseencircumstances.

Without a doubt, feeling comfortable with the venue’s team, and having confidence that they are prepared to go that extra mile, ensures that everything will run smoothly for your special day.

To check how many days you need to be in the country prior to your wedding.

Ensure you have all the necessary documentation; this can differ from country to country. Some may also request copies in advance of your arrival.

Plan your outfits to suit your destination, considering the temperature or whether you may get sandy or wet.

Take your dress on board a plane as hand luggage. Many airlines will allow this as an extra item.

What to look for in a wedding photographerYou have a gorgeous dress, a fabulous venue and the plans for a perfect wedding day, but are you still wondering whether you need a professional photographer?

These days anyone with a camera thinks they are a photographer, and with wedding photographyprices seeming to be getting ‘so expensive’, many couples are turning to friends and family to record their wedding day.

The talents of a true professional can be the difference between a set of snap shots and a portfolio of stunning images as a lasting keepsake of your most important day. A professional has the experience,equipment, and personality to ensure your photographs are not only beautiful, but those special momentsare captured and safeguarded.

If you don’t want photos of getting ready, or your budget does not allow hiring a professional for the whole day, rather than cutting costs and corners, consider spending a bit extra and hiring a professional for less time. Wedding photography is one field where you really do get what you pay for.

Professional stylist tips! Nina Wren is a bridal hair, make up and tiara design professional who specialises in 'hair up'styles. She has styled the hair of countless brides and is the front cover stylist for the 2010Bride Magazine.

The main objective with bridal hair is to find the balance between looking the most gorgeous ever on yourday and at the same time not making your wedding day photos date; they should stand the test of time (or at least a number of years!). Remember, just because you are getting married it doesn't mean you haveto have the ‘standard, scraped back with tight barrel curls on top of your head’ look!

Retro hair is still going strong again this year, but don't overdo it with too muchexaggerated over styling - big hair is still popular but try not to have too much going on at once. If you are going to go for retro hair up, then try a roll on top which looks very elegant.

Chignons are still very popular for both bride and bridesmaids and there are lots of variations of this style; neat and folded in and swept up at the sides or soft and flowing pinned up in sections. You can always have a chignon off centre and more to the side which looks really effective.

Another favourite is 'half up half down' with a softer flow to it. Add height at the crown for a glamorous look if you are wearing a tiara, or keep it simple with the design lower down at the back. Also, try dotting flowers in your hair for that fairytale look.

Before your trial, a good tip is to collect pictures of hair styles you don't think will suit you as well as styles that you like, as this really helps a stylist. We think there are three main points to consider when choosing your stationery. Design, colour scheme and of course, cost!

When it comes to design and colour, there are many current trends out there to choose from. At Inspired byLisa we would always advise you to go with what you both like and feel comfortable with and not what themagazines say you should be choosing! Choose a design and colour that can be carried through your day and coordinate with your bridesmaids, flowers, table decorations etc.

Invitations come in all shapes and sizes these days and can include as much information as you wish. Our favourites are the pocketfold styles which have a neat internal pocket perfect for your guests reply card. You can also add wedding gift list information, directions to your venue and hotel accommodation. Also available are wallet invitations which have a sophisticated, contemporary look and the more traditional stand up invitations which are perfect for your guest to display.

Well of course you need invitations, but what other wedding stationery do you need?If you are having a summer wedding, getting married abroad or perhaps you are having a Christmaswedding, then save the date cards will ensure your guests don’t miss out on your wedding. You may alsorequire orders of service (we would suggest one per couple), place names (this could be incorporated intoyour favours), menus, table plan and even thank you cards, to name but a few.
