I trust you had a good summer and early fall so far and look ahead at year winding down and closing successfully, both on a personal and commercial level.

We are just about to enter the fall and winter season, and for the few months left this year, we can hardly expect any big surprises in our market. Neither gloom nor doom, but “wheels in the sky keep on turning” as it goes in one of my all-time favorite songs of the classic-rock band “Journey”.

In fact 2016 was just another year for a troubled industry. And, it seems, that no matter where in the value chain we stand, we continue to be challenged on our quest for value in a globally weakening economic environment.

Find something you care for,

then care deeply.

BBC Chartering is about to turn 20 next year and as a rather young company we continue to grow and evolve in an industry which saw a tremendous development. In all that time we followed a simple strategy: to deliver efficiency and performance. Maybe it’s because of bespoke simplicity that even in a tough market we were able to stay so focused on our customers and continue to make a difference.

My father once said, find something you care for, then care deeply! Today, I can proudly say that BBC Chartering has deeply cultivated these “care genes”, and we simply can’t stop caring. In this sense it is also our responsibility which makes BBC Chartering one of the most trusted project carriers in the industry.

Now, although challenging fairways are ahead, we continue to make our network, resources and services even better tomorrow than they are today. Why? Because we care for business – and we care for your success which we will be pleased to support, at any port, for any cargo – today, tomorrow and for times to come.

Dear readers,

Welcome back to the second excellence issue in 2016. As you can see, excellence has moved on and is now released as e-paper version. I know this disappoints the paper fans, but I can assure you, it’s printable if you want ;-).

As usual, excellence features interesting content, looking back what has happened in BBC Chartering’s world of project shipping during the past half year.

Much has been going on and we are pleased to take you on a global journey to operations in the beautiful scenery of British Columbia, to Panama, to operation Phoenix Express in the Med, and eventually to an impressive loading in Shanghai.

We talk about high performance on track for Toyo’s Turkmengas project, about the amazing New York Wheel project, and a story about a lucky encounter in the North Pacific Ocean.

Of course we also give an update on the next generation workhorse, where the first was already delivered and some further insights into what

Wind energy integration is a key component of a stronger, cleaner and more affordable power system for BC families and businesses.

BC’s first wind farm started commercial operations in November 2009. Today, the province has almost 500 MW of installed wind energy capacity, ranking fifth in Canada and supplying nearly 2 per cent of the province’s domestic electricity demand.

BC’s energy demand is set to increase by the end of this decade with new mines, expanding natural gas extraction and liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities. The Government of BC has signaled its intention to ensure BC has the “cleanest LNG in the world” by taking advantage of clean energy to power new LNG plants. consumes about 9ltrs/ 100km; this translates in 324 ltrs/day, thie means about 0.3 mt / day, i.e. a 60-70 ltr tank easily suffices for the regular user who hardly operates the vehicle 24/7. But with a ship such as the BBC Rushmore which has an engine output power of around 8,500 bhp, and which normally operates 24/7, the consumption is

approximately around 24,000 - 25,000 ltrs / day. Now you can imagine the amount of oil required to be present on board in case the ship is on a month-long voyage or so. For the BBC Rushmore this means the vessel would consume 720mt of fuel oil on such a trip, an amount which can be easily accommodated on the BBC Rushmore

which has a bunker capacity of up to 850 cubic meters.

We hope you enjoyed this beautiful bird eye’s view on bunkering and of the BBC Rushmore just receiving fuel oil from bunker barge FENIX I outside Panama, another smooth operation delivered by KAMCA Trading.

The ship is also a vehicle which floats on water and requires fuel for its operation. But she has massive engines, which requires fuel to burn and to produce power. While the term used to describe the process of getting your vehicle filled is known as refueling, a similar operation performed for filling fuel oil into the

ship tanks from an outside source is known as bunkering. Bunkers are mostly supplied onboard the ship through a bunker barge.

Depending on the size of the ship and speed at which it is designed to cruise, the capacity and number of bunker tanks are decided. Typical capacities

of bunker tank onboard ships are varying from 150 cubic meters to as big as 3500 cubic meters. One might wonder why the ship’s bunker tank capacity is so big. The answer is that with increasing engine power, the fuel consumption also increases. For example a normal 2 ltr. Car with an engine of 175 bhp power output

What do you do when your car or bike runs out of fuel? Well the solution to this problem is pretty simple; you go to the nearest gas station and get your vehicle refueled.

New York is a city of superlatives with another highlight

in the making: The “New York Wheel”. It will be amongst

the largest ferris wheels in the world. BBC Chartering is

a proud mover of the big wheel.

BBC Chartering is pleased to announce it got awarded a 82,000 r/t contract by heavy lift expert Mammoet Logistics B.V. to provide the transatlantic transport services for the New York Wheel project. The scope of the agreement covers the transport of erection equipment, and all other components of the ferris wheel, i.e. legs, rim, spindle, spokes, and capsules. The project service commenced with the first shipment in June 2016 and extends well into 2017.

“We are proud to be involved in this gigantic project which sets out to become another iconic New York City landmark and world-class attraction,”

said Svend Andersen, CEO of BBC Chartering. The first two shipments were already executed successfully, and 10 more will follow matching the projects progress and procurement plan.

The project is a good example where cargo owners and contractors secure shipping capacity on a flexible yet reliable basis through BBC Chartering’s high performance service. The overall scope of this project covers 12 shipments ex Schiedam and Westdorpe, Netherlands; Ortona, Ravenna, and Porto Marghera, Italy; and Gemlik, Turkey. All are discharged at New York City’s SBMT Terminal and concern a wide range of heavy lift

cargo requirements, including the heaviest piece, the spindle, which features an impressive weight of 790mt.

“We work to understand the challenges and risk of our customers on such demanding projects,“ said Benjamin Nobel, Chartering Manager at BBC Chartering’s Genoa office, “after a diligent process of evaluating our capabilities, we are pleased to say that our fleet and service concept made all the difference and eventually helped us become the carrier of choice for Mammoet Logistics on this project.” For more information please read Mammoet and New York Wheel homepages.

As previously announced, BBC Chartering has been awarded a strategic volume contract by Toyo Engineering serving their multi-facetted project logistics needs for Petronas’ Refinery and Petrochemicals Integrated Development (RAPID) project in Pengerang, Malaysia; Sasol’s low density polyethylene (LDPE) plant in Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA; Shintech’s Ethane Cracker Project (SECP) in Plaquemine, Louisiana, USA; and Turkmengas’ petrochemical complex (TGPC) on the Caspian Sea shelf, Turkmenistan.

The execution of the project for Turkmengas has reached a major milestone and BBC Chartering completed the delivery of all mission critical items for the project from various locations in Far East to Constanta, Rumania. BBC Chartering’s responsibility was completed when the cargo was discharged onto river barges to travel up the Black Sea into the river system through Volgograd. The final leap was done by road transport, via SPMT.

In summary, for the Turkmengas project share only, BBC Chartering performed 12 voyages and consolidated more than 80,000 frt of project cargo from Kobe (Japan); Ulsan, Pyeong Taek, Pusan, Busan, Masan (Korea); Kuantan, Port Klang (Malaysia), and Chennai (India) to Constanta, Rumania.

The final shipments were performed on the heavy lifters Palabora and BBC Xingang, and marked a spectacular highlight of the project. With many large and oversized pieces, the heaviest cargo was reactor column measuring just over 100 meters in lengthand weighing 540mt, this represented the most critical item for the project. The other heavy lift units on these two shipments included depropanizer, deethanizer, propylene fractionator,

quench tower, wash tower, gasoline fractionator, and an ethylene cracker. The cargo operations for these heavy lift items were safely executed in line with the projects performance and flexibility requirements. Cargoes of this scale are easily exposed and impacted to circumstances which can quickly cause delays even under a most comprehensive assessment of potential risks.

At the end no one asks how cheap a project like this was done, if it does not work. It’s only about how well everything worked. Mr. Akira Takahashi, Toyo’s head of project logistics, complemented the BBC Chartering team:

“We thank BBC Chartering for their efforts and cooperation extended to these shipments ex Kuantan, Malaysia!”

BBC Chartering felt privileged to help, keeping in mind, that retaining the ability to perform is what really counts, and that a close relationship with customers is paramount to surmount any challenge cooperatively.

While the Turkmengas project share is completed, transports are continuing on the remaining three projects: the RAPID project which takes the largest share of the volumes into Malaysia; Sasol’s low density polyethylene (LDPE) plant in Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA; and, Shintech’s Ethane Cracker Project (SECP) in Plaquemine, Louisiana, USA, which is also at its peak for transporting cargo to site.

We would like to share with you an interesting story of human survival and compassion at sea. This extraordinary adventure happened last year when SV Pipe Dream was sailing in the North Pacific Ocean. Just as the BBC Seine in August 17, 2015.

Day after day, I have been quite concerned. Fuel is low, and from that, water, refrigerator, and autopilot are also low. We have been training the whole crew at the helm. Without autopilot we would need to hand steer the boat the rest of the way. Three shifts of two crew members, two hours on, four hours off. Four hours of rough sleep. And cooking and

cleaning and boat maintenance thrown in. Hand steering during the day is pretty cool, for a while. Surfing the boat 12 feet down the face of a wave like we are playing on quads at the dunes with salt water in the face instead of sand. Feeling the power of 1500 square feet of sail pulling us along.

But at night, when you‘re tired and cranky, it doesn‘t have the same draw. Right now, we have fuel to run the autopilot at night. Hand steering during the day to save Casper (that’s the name of the autopilot) for the night. Without power, we can‘t make water, and that is also kind of important.

We do have reserves, but they are lean. Third, the refrigerator. Keeping our precious food cold is staying out certain crew members. Like all of the crew members. Well, today we had a turn of events.

I was taking an early turn at the wheel. A glance back. A second glance to verify the first. Something behind us... I look one more and ….. FISH!I yell loudly to get the crew on action. Get in action they do! Bud brings in a 24“ dorado. The Captain gaffs it to get it onboard. I pour the vodka to stop the struggles. Lila and Kevin make fillets and clean up. I give thanks to the fish for its bounty and nourishment before his remains are returned to the sea.

A couple hours later... Toni and I are hungry. Fridge is not cooling because of the fuel situation so we decide we should eat from it first. Hmmmm. The bacon should keep. The sealed pork tenderloins should keep. The fish. We should make tacos. We wouldn‘t want it to spoil, would we? Chili lime powder in some mayo, more Chili and lime on the fish, and refried beans. Everyone devoured it. Nothing left. I guess that was a good sign.

Bud ate quickly since he was up to steer. Mine was next. I had a full half hour and enjoyed two huge fat fish

tacos. Even Katie, through her bouts of seasickness, ate two. We seven sailors then picked our watches. I took my usual. Kevin was on the wheel now.

For some reason, Kevin spots all the cool stuff. He saw the dolphins a couple weeks ago, the whales, the first to see the birds, and tonight, he saw a ship. We pulled it up on the AIS: The BBC Seine, heading to China. Over 600 feet long.

Someone says, let‘s ask if they have fuel they can give us! Johnny gets on the VHF and calls

A friendly Russian voice comes back. Our bold Captain explains our situation and then asks if they could spare some fuel. Stand by... That day they are changing course, and will come around to windward, throw us a line that will have fuel jugs attached. The excitement in the boat was now electric!

Everyone had a job. Lila and Kevin upfront, as lookouts and handling the jib. Katie and Toni getting lines ready, Bud and myself ready to haul in Jerry

cans. Captain Johnny on the helm and radio, coordinating position and us. We had rough seas, and the sun was on the horizon. This was going to be a challenge. John held our little boat steady while the BBC Seine came alongside.

Have no doubt, it is freaking scary being next to a ship of that size, and we were less than twenty feet away at times. Wind gusts sped us up, and we had to back down again. The ship had its own wind when we got close. The crew of the BBC Seine was amidships with a throwing line. Suddenly, I saw a black ball, and a line flying directly towards us. Right over the boom. As perfect a throw as could be hoped for. We got it secured to a winch, and those wonderful Russians then dropped five gallon jugs in the water for us. Thank you, BBC Seine!

After a bit of wrangling, we got those jugs on our boat. High fives all around. When it was all said and done, the Captain declared just how stressed he was. It was a tough job, and he handled it well. Thanks Captain.

New presence in Esbjerg

August 2016 - BBC Chartering announces the re-launch of its presence in Denmark with a new representative office in Esbjerg opening August 15, 2016.

“Global wind power saw an unprecedented growth recently, for the first time crossing 60 GW in new capacity installments in 2015. Consequently shipping volumes for the sector have increased significantly over the last two years“, observed Svend Andersen, CEO of BBC Chartering. “It’s imperative for us to support the industry in Denmark, which is a core market and home to decision makers supplying wind power components globally.”

As the carrier’s 33rd location, BBC Chartering in Esbjerg will directly cooperate with BBC Chartering in Bremen, Germany which is also focusing on wind power customers. Both entities are steered from the company’s European operating hub and global headquarter in Leer, Germany.

Mr. Mads Poulsen, who transferred from BBC Chartering Singapore, was appointed as regional Sales & Chartering Manager for the Esbjerg office.

Operation Phoenix Express, is sponsored by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and facilitated by U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet. The exercise is one of three regional exercises designed to improve regional cooperation, increase maritime domain awareness information-sharing practices, and operational capabilities to

enhance efforts to achieve safety and security in the Mediterranean Sea.

The annual operation is part of a comprehensive strategy to provide collaborative opportunities amongst African forces and international partners that addresses maritime security concerns. Participating nations in Phoenix Express 2016 include Algeria, Egypt, Greece, Italy,

Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and the United States.

The U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, joint, and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.

For exercise purposes the US Military Sealift Command also chartered the BBC Scotland to participate in the operation, delivering an interesting change – at least for the seven day charter period – to the lives of the sailors on board the multipurpose vessel.

The vessel and its crew were embedded in various scenarios staging the illegal trafficking issues the marine security forces have to

face at sea during their operational deployments nowadays. In many exercises the BBC Scotland was entered by each participating nation’s Navy forces and freed of the subversive elements who took control in the training scenario of vessel and crew. Not being the normal project shipping job, this was an interesting experience for the crew which also posed as pirates, terrorist or victims respectively. We say, well done and we’re glad to have you back in regular service.

BBC Scotland at center stage of

In a recent shipment the BBC Pearl was the assigned as heavy lifter to move an impressive amount of cargo on deck from Zhangijagang, Shanghai, China to the port of Manokwari, Indonesia. For the Wuhan based customer the vessel loaded four 350 mt heavy mobile harbor cranes, one big and one smaller ship-loader on deck, and some smaller additional cargo was loaded below deck.

“In total the vessel loaded a massive volume of 104,000 cubic meters and a total weight of over 2,300mt for this

project,” said David Calero, commercial manager of BBC Chartering in Shanghai.

The transport project on the BBC Pearl is a great display of how BBC Chartering performs on extremely bulky and oversized cargo. Also for short distances, such as this intra-Asia trading requirement, BBC Chartering’s portfolio of 170 vessels provides a great selection of suitable carriers for any port, any cargo service request.

miningequipment for panamaMining is one of the growing sectors in the Panamanian economy, and it is expected to expand further. Billions in mineral reserves are waiting to be mined in Panama and one of the main boosters to this growth has been the ongoing construction and development of the $6.2 billion copper, gold, silver, and molybdenum Cobre Panama mine, on the country‘s Atlantic coast, a large open-pit copper development project in Panama. The concession is located 120 kilometers west of Panama City and 20 kilometers from the Caribbean Sea coast. The concession consists of four zones totaling 13,600 hectares and is Panama‘s biggest source of exports.

Awarded by NMT projects, BBC Chartering moved a total volume 23.000 frt of mining equipment, trucks and other project cargo in 8 shipments from Houston, Montreal, Genoa, and Antwerp to Punta Rincon, Panama. On the largest shipment, BBC Chartering loaded over 12,000 frt of mining equipment. Arranged through TITAN Cargo in Antwerp, we are pleased to share a video of this loading operation onboard the BBC Elbe, a 2006 built 17,500 dwt multipurpose vessel with 3x 80mt cranes.

The MPV / HL future is now: together with long-term business partners Briese, Krey and Auerbach, BBC Chartering engages in the next MPV/HL generation, the 12,500 dwt Eco Trader MPV 500.

In past excellence issues we accompanied our next generation workhorse from the design phase until after launching and we reported about the tank tests, the “magic seven of optimization”, the new type of main engine and safe operation aspects.

Now, we like to focus on the cranes as the most important equipment on board a heavy lifter. “Customizing a standard product to make it an optimal fit for the ship and its cargo requirements is an art,” says Bernd Boening, newbulidng manager at Briese Schiffahrt. “Safe working load (SWL) capacity is not everything. Crane outreach, lifting heights, and making the interaction between the cranes and the hatch cover system a perfect match are major performance-enhancing features.” The Eco Trader

has two 250-ton Liebherr cranes capable of delivering their full 500-ton capacity in tandem operation with an outreach of 11 m from the ship’s side over the pier when using a lifting beam. The cranes can utilize half of their lifting capacity across the entire deck area. The remarkable combination of outreach and lifting height capability of cranes enables the transport of extremely bulky cargo items. The cranes are also approved for continuous bulk operation. “No other ship in our fleet offers better crane reach and lifting heights,” says Boening. “There is no need for a stabilization pontoon. “This allows us to utilize all of the available space for payload and save time otherwise needed for mobilization/de-mobilization.”

The advantageous crane design extends to the hatch cover system. A combined hatch cover system consisting of mainly folding covers and only two pontoon covers in the midship area between the cranes will avoid time-consuming cargo turnover. “The two-hatch system increases loading flexibility significantly,” says Boening.

“The new ships can easily stow long, large, bulky cargo such as wind turbine rotor blades no longer only on deck but also in the hold.” The main cargo hold measures 76.5 meters in length and 17.6 meters in width, and the tank top can bear loads of up to 25 tons per square meter. But also the deck offers more than comparable existing ships: The vessel is equipped with a bridge panel which closes the gap between hatch no.1 and hatch no.2.

This is indeed nothing entirely new but what is new is that this bridge panel does not have to be taken off before opening the adjacent folding covers. The superstructure between aft end of hatch no.2 and accommodation superstructure has the same height as the hatch covers and has a re-inforced deck head so it can bear the same load as the hatch covers. Due to these two features the usable stowage area extends from the fore end of hatch no.1 up to abt. 1 metre in front of the accommodation block – an area with a length of more than 107 metres being entirely flush. Furthermore, it will be possible to stow large cargo beyond the hatch cover edges to the sides as the vessel is equipped with a rigid cargo rail on either side.

Pictured here is the first Eco Trader, the BBC Birte H., owned by Krey Shipping. She commenced service in May 2016 and the performance data she collected on her maiden voyage was already exceeding many expectations. We now look forward to welcoming the other new units and will be pleased to keep you posted.

BBC Chartering has to deal with changes on an ongoing basis, e.g. with regards to fleet composition, vessel owners, and crews. Moreover, each transport project looks at a complex set of specific trading, cargo and service requirements; these in turn are exposed to a multitude of influencing factors that determine overall quality of service.

Next to the implemented International Safety Management (ISM) systems as a quality management on board of the chartered in vessels, BBC Chartering GmbH is certified under the standards of ISO 9001:2008 (quality management), ISO 14001:2004 (environmental management), and OHSAS 18001:2008 (occupational health and safety management).

However, having such systems certification may not be sufficient for customers as they need to assure themselves of BBC Chartering’s ability to meet their own high standards. We thus offer customers upon request to conduct customer-specific audits, which should help them to diligence our operations and assure them of our compliance as well as our preparedness to meet their standards.

This allows customers to examine the whole spectrum of HSEQ related processes. During past examinations external customer audits comprehensively looked at BBC Chartering’s quality, environmental, health and safety policies, the roles and responsibilities within BBC Chartering, the measured KPIs, objectives and associated follow-ups. They also focused on the management review and the continuous improvement process, the project management and execution structures, and the handling of customer project requirements and change requests. Auditors also examined the initiation and documentation of corrective and preventive actions, the evaluation and approval of suppliers and subcontractors, the process of vessel being vetted before being accepted for operations and, on the documentation side, the audit scrutinized the control of records, documents and versions, the managing of legal and other requirements and their follow-up.

The customers’ auditors also wanted to understand how BBC Chartering follows-up on internal audits and vessel audits, on incidents, non-conformities, and customer

complaints, how we handle and keep track of permissions, surveys, trainings, licenses and certificates.

Of course they also looked at the availability of comprehensive organizational charts, and how incident investigations are managed. Attention is also paid on the documentation of project specific equipment lists, including maintenance plans and certificates, and how project specific requirements and plans (e.g. stow, lifting, and lashing plans etc.) are dealt with.

Lastly, the audits covered the environmental management systems, including the control procedures for energy, waste, and emissions, and the safety management system, its organization, hazard identification, risk assessment / controls, safety rules, emergency preparedness, and personal protection policies.

“The great thing about such audits is, that customers really get a good understanding of our activities,” said Uwe Wunderlich Senior HSEQ officer of BBC Chartering. “Such audits are also an excellent tool to capture external feedback and drive improvement internally”. “Large multinationals, industrial customers or contractors appreciate this and our benefit is to be approved as preferred supplier for another period of time,” adds Thomas Helmig, HSEQ Officer.
