Think Canada: Global Business Summit welcomed ready-to-expand global business leaders to be a part of Canada’s

largest inbound foreign direct investment initiative held at the Ontario Investment and Trade Centre from October

21st to 22nd, 2015.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

Think Canada’s mission was to strategically target 100 *pre-qualifi ed companies from 10 different countries. Due to

time constraint and the limitations in hosting a fi rst-time, large scale event, the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance

(GTMA) and thinkCOMPASS were able to confi rm 58 pre-qualifi ed companies from

15 countries.

The primary objective for Think Canada was to secure a minimum of fi ve to ten prospects for global investment

closures. In order to hit this objective, the GTMA, in collaboration with the Province of Ontario

and thinkCOMPASS Inc., leveraged the network of established intermediaries and in-market representatives to

identify 100 investment-ready companies planning to expand their business to North America.

*Pre-qualifi ed companies are based on the following criteria:

• The company has been in business for at least 2 years,

• The company has a turnover of at least $1.5 million USD,

• The company has at least 10 employees, and

• The company has a clear objective to expand to North America.

COMPANY PROFILE AND INVESTMENT PROJECT OVERVIEW

BlaBlaCar is the world’s largest long-distance ridesharing community. Conceived in December 2003 by Frédéric Mazzella,

and founded in 2006, BlaBlaCar connects drivers and passengers willing to travel together between cities while sharing the

cost of the journey. BlaBlaCar has more than 20 million members across 19 countries.

Members must register and create a personal online profi le, which includes ratings and reviews by other members, social

network verifi cation, and rate of response. Profi les of members show how much experience they have of the service,

meaning those with more – known as “ambassadors” – attract more ride shares and, importantly, each user’s profi le includes

a “BlaBla” measurement, which indicates how much they are willing to chat during a trip.

As of April 2015, the company had raised $100 million USD from blue-chip venture-capital fi rms including ISAI, Index

and Accel, plus earlier rounds of ¤1.2 million from ISAI and ¤600,000 from founders, friends, and family. On September

17, BlaBlaCar announced it had raised another $200 million USD “primarily from US investors” in a round that valued the

company at $1.6 billion USD. The service is accessible via the web, mobile and also via apps for iOS and Android.

BlaBlaCar is inquiring a Greenfi eld project, following an in-depth industry analysis. They are nervous to commit to anything

besides a sales offi ce at this point due to the fact that a previous company with a similar service attempted to expand here

but was forced out due to legal issues.

I am pleased to write this recommendation for Think Compass regarding the recent Think Canada event they envisioned and co-ordinated.

As Canada’s ninth largest city, Brampton was proud to be a part of this innovative B2B international event. As a sponsor, we look forward to providing ongoing support for Think Canada in 2016 and the potential it has for positive economic impact in our city.

Sincerely,

The purpose of this e-mail is to provide you with my feedback on the recently completed Think Canada: Global Business Summit event. “When this event was fi rst proposed to me, I was skep cal. But as the event date approached it became evident that the event was going to be more successful than I originally thought.”

The City of Mississauga chose to sponsor this event, a er recognizing it could be in help us achieve our economic development objec ves. This two day summit was held at the Ontario Investment and Trade Centre, in Toronto on October 21-22nd, 2015. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of companies I met with on the fi rst day of the event. Clearly these companies had been properly qualifi ed as perspec ve investors into Canada. The quality of the program, including the presenta ons and then networking, was very good. B2B mee ngs strategically managed by Think Canada, connected us with the right interna onal businesses with the poten al to increase the FDI in Mississauga. As a result, it is likely that the City of Mississauga will sponsor this event again. Typical to new event and missions, Think Canada was not without its challenges. However, the commitment to excellence demonstrated by Think Compass staff and management leads me to beleive that Think Canada will only improve year over year. Without hesita on, I would recommend other levels of government and municipali es consider par cipa ng in this event next year. Thank you for taking this on Think Compass and absorbing the risk for this pilot project. If this past event is any indication of future success, I am sure that think Canada in 2016 will be continue to exceed expectations.

PETE KARAGEORGOS, INSURANCE BUREAU OF CANADA

“Insurance Bureau of Canada was invited to Think Canada to meet with representatives of the French Car-Pooling

App “Bla Bla Car” (BBC) and assist with insurance questions. The conversation between IBC and BBC continues

as we answer additional questions to assist them in their consideration to expand into the Canadian marketplace.

Opportunities such as this are defi nitely benefi cial for all involved, especially businesses looking to expand and

understand not only the local market but also to gather information on regulatory issues such as insurance.

We would welcome the opportunity to participate further.”

MARK STRAUB, CONSULTING FIRM

“It was my pleasure to attend this event. I found the agenda very well structured and the quality of attendees to be

high. The day’s events were well laid out and the format of the meetings to be good. I realize it may have been diffi cult

to pre-plan meetings, but it would have been nice to know in advance my meeting times and who I would be meeting.

This way I can structure my time accordingly and do some prep work on the companies I would be meeting. That

being said, the day was still a success from my point of view and I hope to be included in future events.”
