Research is a core activity of the College of Business. Our academic staff are dedicated to knowledge creation through research and knowledge dissemination through industry engagement and teaching.

We aim to provide high quality research outcomes, robust policy advice, and critical analyses on the challenges confronting business, government, and the community sector. Our research interests extend across the globe, with a particular focus on the Asia Pacific region.

The leading researchers in the College are internationally recognised and widely published in top-ranking journals. They bring expertise from the disciplines of management, law, accounting, information and communications technology, information management, logistics and supply chain management, marketing, economics, and finance. Part of our mission is to explore ways of connecting business and design.

The College of Business has a superb location in the heart of Melbourne which enables researchers to establish close links with business, government and the wider community. We invite you to join us in pursuing innovative and collaborative research.

RMIT’s College of Business ‘Research Showcase’ aims to publicise and celebrate high quality research in the College. This year’s showcase will be the first to promote Global Business Innovation, one of the University’s new Research Enabling Capability Platforms.

Under the theme of ‘Innovation’ the showcase will feature varied and exciting research from around the College of Business and beyond it. Drawing on new trends in university research and industry practice, the topics will cover crypto-currencies, co-working spaces, ethical hacking, and online privacy, to name just a few.

The Showcase concludes with the annual Research Excellence Awards ceremony and reception.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

Best wishes,

Geoff

Luke works for the Australian Government Department of Industry and Science under its Chief Economist Mark Cully.

He has been employed in the Department since 2007. Prior to that he was a research scientist working the field of plant eco-physiology and holds a PhD from Australian National University. Luke now leads the Australian Government’s innovation research program and is responsible for delivering the Government’s annual Australian Innovation System Report (www.industry.gov.au/innovationreport) which is now in its fifth year.

Luke’s general interests are in the areas of productivity and competitiveness and how the performance of the innovation system drives these outcomes across all sectors of the economy.

Luke also has a particular interest in the economics of complexity, behavioural- and evolutionary-economics and business eco-innovation.

Luke’s presentation will draw together a wealth of information from successive innovation system reports to outline a narrative about the importance of business-research collaboration in Australia.

Overview

Global Business Innovation

The current process of globalisation has increased the speed and scope of change in all aspects of business. New and more complex problems arising from both the integration and disruption of established business models and practices require innovative solutions. The search for innovation, however, cannot be confined within disciplinary boundaries or achieved without effective collaboration. This platform brings together interdisciplinary and applied researchers to address themes connecting supply chains, markets, entrepreneurship, governance, and people. It includes a specific focus on innovation, value creation, and sustainability informed by economic and socio-political perspectives. The goal of Global Business Innovation is to promote excellence across the diverse fields of business research as well as to use this expertise in the process of knowledge transfer for the benefit of the economy, society, and the public sector.

GBI comprises five sub-platforms that indicate the current research foci, existing and emerging strengths of the platform. All the sub-platforms are interdisciplinary; each one reaches across Schools; and each will involve relevant researchers from other Colleges.

Global logistics and supply chain managementThe members of this sub-platform undertake cutting edge research in global logistics operations, supply chain technologies, retail logistics, supply chain network design, as well as freight and transport. The focus is on applied multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research that uses information, modelling, and analytics to shape the future of internationally integrated logistics and sustainable supply chain networks domestically and globally. This research aims to develop innovative tools, programs, and policies for the supply chain industry.

Entrepreneurship and innovationThis sub-platform brings together researchers from a range of disciplines to conduct research on the incubation, growth, and sustainability of various forms of entrepreneurship (such as venture, social, digital, indigenous). These researchers investigate how government, businesses and communities design and manage innovations to succeed in the digital economy. A major focus is on the unprecedented convergence of people, business, digital technology and things that disrupt existing business models. The goal is to develop concepts, policies, strategies, and techniques to help stakeholders address the challenges of glocal businesses that blur the digital and physical worlds.

Sub-platforms

Governance, accountability, and the lawThe researchers in this field seek to improve knowledge and understanding of governance, accountability and the law in public and private organisations, both in profit and non-profit contexts. This research seeks not only to understand the state of governance and accountability in organisations, economy and society, but also evaluate the forms of regulation, and legal reforms that are required to enhance accountable governance globally. The overall objective is to improve sustainable governance practices and thereby help minimise financial losses and corporate failure.

Markets, culture, and behaviourThis sub-platform coordinates researchers from a range of disciplines that use a variety of methodologies to understand how markets evolve and work. Researchers consider the roles of market structure, as well as the behaviour (including the nature of decisions and decision processes) of market participants. Culture is interwoven throughout this research in terms of cultural groups and subcultures, as well as the impact of shared value systems on the functioning of markets. The aim is to investigate how markets could become more efficient and understand the drivers for and impediments to innovation.

People, organisations, and performanceThis sub-platform focuses on the leadership and management of people in the workplace, as well as the wider economic, political, social and cultural environment in which organisations operate. Researchers from a variety of disciplines explore such issues as diversity, skills and human resource development, and the links to effective performance. The latter include financial, operational, and organisational sustainability, employee commitment, as well as economic and employee wellbeing. A major goal is to formulate innovative policies and programs for business, government, and community.
