Day One “2016 R & D Day”

Purpose: Be prepared for the think tank! 2013 MSAP schools will coach 2016 schools to research and develop the project design section. Your team will be challenged to develop creative ways of promoting student interaction, improving academic achievement for all students, and increasing parental decision making and involvement. Research golden thread reforms such as: AVID, The Leader in Me, InSCIed Out, Math Solutions, STEAM, CTE, and/or other scientific research based reform strategies. Research theme based schools for ideas under STEAM / STEM education. Create a “Theory of Change” logic model for your school’s design.  Bring: STEAM team, mobile devices, SIP, student data, and any information you have already researched (quotes, flyers, websites, etc) Exit Slip: At the end of the R&D day team members will complete a team exit slip in order to gather names and titles of district staff you need to assist / approve your plan, to answer additional questions, and to obtain feedback on how the facilitators can better assist 2016 teams.  Team Next Steps: Meet with faculty, Administrators, and other stakeholdersGet prepared for Day Two: INNOVATION DAY!

Team “Toxic School Factors” Engineering Design Activity

Situation: There has been a toxic invasion of factors that can take a school down! Your mission is to work as a team with only the materials provided to transfer the toxic factors from the container located in the contaminated area to the container located in the decontaminated area. The transfer must be made by a minimum of four team members carrying out the team plan. If any part of one of the team members body crosses into the contaminated area their position must be taken by another team member. Successful transfer is achieved when the toxic school factors are transferred out of the container in contaminated area into the container located in the decontaminated area.

Problem: Toxic school factors must be transferred from the contaminated area to the decontaminated area.

Brainstorm: Work as a team to discover possible ways to successfully make the transfer

Plan: Sketch out the plan and use the materials to design a method for the transfer

Create: Use the prototype your team created to make the transfer

Improve: Reflect on the execution of your plan and make suggestions for improvement.

A Closer Look At Toxic School Factors

● These are just a few of the many factors that have an adverse impact on schools.

● These factors, if left unaddressed, most likely will contribute to a toxic school environment.

● These are the factors that the Magnet School Assistance Program will address.

MSAP Quality of Project Design Re-Cap...

At the summer NIMSL training we

looked at the entire MSAP

application.

Today’s focus is on the Quality of

Project Design Section that is

worth 30 of the 100 points for the

application scoring.

(c) Quality of Project Design (30 Points)(i) Promote desegregation, including

how each proposed magnet school program will increase interaction among students of different social, economic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds;

(ii) Improve student academic achievement for all students attending each magnet school program, including the manner and extent to which each magnet school program will increase student academic achievement in the instructional area or areas offered by the school; and

(iii) Encourage greater parental decision-making and involvement.

Time for Research and DevelopmentOur Goal: To develop

programs, concepts, and

methods grounded in

research for a “Theory of

Change” designed to attract

students to the Magnet Program at your school!

The Logic Behind “Theory of Change”

Theory of Change is essentially a comprehensive description and illustration of how and why a desired change is expected to happen in a particular context. It is focused in particular on mapping out or “filling in” what has been described as the “missing middle” between what a program or change initiative does (its activities or interventions) and how these lead to desired goals being achieved. It does this by first identifying the desired long-term goals and then works back from these to identify all the conditions (outcomes) that must be in place for the goals to occur.

Seriously, no one remembers the
