The pay off comes with the natural single-track that you will often have mostly to yourself. We have numbered some of the key trails to make it easier to navigate the area. Where to start The trails can be accessed from many start points, either the centre of Church Stretton, Carding Mill Valley or the Shropshire Hills MTB centre where you will find shops and cafe’s for any trail supplies. Please avoid parking in passing places on country lanes or in the entrances to farmers’ fields. Share the trail We share these fantastic natural trails with walkers and horse riders so please be considerate to other trail users as we all share a common interest in enjoying the trails. Keep your speed under control and give way to walkers and horses. When on the road be aware of cars particularly on narrow steep single-track roads. Give friendly warning when approaching walkers from behind. Best practice for passing horses Slow down, give verbal warning. Pass downside where possible. Personal safety Always carry a mobile phone and some sort of identification Ride within your ability Ensure your bike is safe to ride and be prepared for all emergencies Always tell someone where you are going and when you will be back Reflective materials on your clothes or bike can save your life ALWAYS wear a helmet Particular care should be taken on unstable or wet surfaces Remember, have fun and enjoy! Should you ever become lost on the Long Mynd in bad weather the advice is to try and find a road and follow to civilisation. If you can’t find a road then descending will always lead you to the bottom of the Long Mynd and ultimately a road. Take a jacket The Long Mynd does not have many trees! Which means great views but when the weather turns and the wind and rain starts you will be pushed to find shelter. So bring a jacket; it can be a pleasant day on the square in Church Stretton but blowing a gale at Pole Cottage. Follow the trails Keep to the bridleways and permissive routes. We have listed and plotted some of the best legal routes on and around the Long Mynd, as you explore you will no doubt see plenty of enticing singletrack but please keep to the trails. If you’re not sure where you can ride just ask or check out the map. Gates Many of the trails have a gate at some point. It is important to always close them behind you to prevent livestock getting loose. Maintain the Long Mynd’s natural beauty Protect plants by not riding over them; be considerate to wildlife and livestock by slowing down when approaching animals. Take your litter home so it does not pose a threat to animals or spoil our countryside. Route information Because of the variety of the Long Mynd and the surrounding area you are faced with plenty of riding choices and we have highlighted some of the best trails that can be mixed and matched to create a route to suit your needs. All trails are either legal rights of way or permissive routes and you can travel in any direction you like. Beware live Airfield Always be alert and do not cross the airfield. Use waymarked trails.
