Thiel in OpenersThiel is 3-2 in its last five season-openers. Thiel’s last season-opening win was on the road against Allegheny on Sept. 3, 2016 (44-21).

By the NumbersThird-year head coach Dan Blume returns 23 letterwinners and 15 players with starting expe-rience in 2018. On offense, 11 letterwinners and seven starters return. On defense, eight letterwinners and four starters are back. Four letterwinners and four starters return on special teams.

Welcome to the TeamBlume’s 2018 roster includes 51 freshmen.

Last Year’s OpenerThe Thiel Tomcats lost their 2017 home open-er to the Allegheny Gators Thursday night at Alumni Stadium, 38-6.

After a failed onside kick by the Tomcats to open the game, the Gators answered with a 43-yard scoring drive capped off by a 25-yard touch-down pass from Logan Lee to Dwaine Barber. The score put Allegheny ahead 7-0 with 13:40 remaining in the first quarter. Lee would throw a total of four touchdowns on the night.

Thiel immediately answered with a nine-play, 80-yard drive that resulted in a 31-yard touch-down reception by Marcus Waddy from Ronald Brown for the Tomcats’ first points of the game.

Allegheny forced an early second quarter turn-over to give the Gators field position deep in Tomcat territory resulting in the first of two touch-down receptions for Ben Bachik on the night.

The Gators broke open the game in the second quarter scoring 24 points before the end of the first half to give them a sizeable 31-6 lead going into halftime.

Nick Barca ran 22 times for 128 yards on the night and averaged 5.8 yards per carry. Safety Dalton DuBrosky led the Tomcats with seven tackles.

All-PAC HonoreesThiel returns three All-PAC Honorabler Mention players from 2017 in Barca, linebacker Matt Crawford and cornerback Trou Johnson.

Barca set a new program record for rushing yards in a season (1,232) in 2017, topping Ryan Radke’s record (1,109) from 2016.

Barca ran for more than 100 yards six times last season, and his 215-yard effort against Geneva on Sept. 23, 2017 ranks sixth in single-game

history.

Crawford, a Greenville native, recorded 50 tack-les as a sophomore last season, 4.5 of which were behind the line of scrimmage. He also tal-lied a sack, forced a fumble and blocked a kick in 2017.

Johnson made 27 tackles last year. He broke up a pair of passes and recorded one interception.

Captains NamedJosh Zinsmeister, DuBrosky, Barca, Crawford and Johnson were recently named the team’s captains for the 2018 season.

Kicking GameJunior kicker Chris Rosales has recorded 62 career points, tying him for the fifth most in program history among kickers. Rosales made 13-of-15 extra points in 2017 and connected on two field goals for a total of 19 points.

Last GameThe Tomcats concluded the 2017 season with a 51-21 PAC loss to the Grove City Wolverines at Alumni Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 11.

With the win the Wolverines earned possession of the Mercer County Cup. Thiel had won three-straight Mercer County Cup games prior to the 2017 meeting.

Grove City jumped out to a quick 17-0 lead in the first quarter. Randall Labrie opened the game with a 1-yard touchdown run during the first possession of the game. Mitch Causer extended Grove City’s lead to 10-0 when he booted a 27-yard field goal on his team’s sec-ond possession of the game. On the ensuing drive, Wolverine linebacker Sam Henson picked off a Thiel pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown.

Labrie connected with Cody Gustafson on a 92-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter. Labrie also scored on an 18-yard run at the 11:23 mark of the second frame.

The Tomcats got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter when Brown threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jake Elk to cap off a 14-play, 75-yard drive. However, Labrie threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Matt Pennypacker to give the Wolverines a 38-7 lead at halftime.

Thiel cut into the lead in the third quarter when Brown threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Waddy, but Wesley Schools scored touchdowns on 3-yard and 16-yard runs to push Grove City’s lead to 51-14.

The Tomcats closed out scoring with 54 seconds

About the Presidents’ Athletic ConferenceThe Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on over sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence.

The league’s name clearly reflects its founding principle that operational control of all aspects of intercollegiate athletics is ultimately the responsibility of the presidents of each member institution, and thus active presidential leadership and oversight is paramount in conference administration.

Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a real-ization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. The PAC and its membership continue its original, defining mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.

Institutions involved understand that the key components to its progress lie in the foundation of faith in each member by each other member. It is the conviction of its member-ship that the PAC is the solution to the dilemma of inter-collegiate athletic competition, and they have staked their athletic future on this premise.

Currently comprised of nine select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy.

The PAC expanded its membership to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More College, formerly a NCAA Division III independent. Thomas More’s 12-year membership in the PAC ended with the conclusion of the 2017-18 academic year. Saint Vincent, a former National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) member, joined the conference in 2006 as it began its reclassifica-tion to Division III status. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play in 2007 as it started its Division III reclassifica-tion. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007.

In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council voted to add Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season. Franciscan University of Steubenville was accepted as an affiliate member in men’s and women’s lacrosse in December 2017 and will begin PAC play in 2019.

The PAC crowns league champions and awards all-conference honors in its 23 championship sports (12 men, 11 women). Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and golf, all-PAC accolades are based upon perfor-mances at the conference championships.

The PAC, which celebrated its 60th anniversary during the 2014-15 academic year, annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which per-form best across the board in PAC competition.

Staying true to its original mission of promoting intercol-legiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence, the PAC has seen nearly 300 of its participating student-athletes recognized as Academic All-Americans, while the league has also produced numerous NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the conference named a record 1,144 student-athletes to its PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.
