THEWEEK@SAINTBENEDICT Dear Parents and Carers I hope you all had an enjoyable weekend, whether you were celebrating St.George’s day, working or spending time with the family. The weeks are flying by and we are already three weeks into a seven week half term. Exams are starting to take place and it is only four weeks now until the exams start in earnest. They tend to be over quite an intense period of a few weeks once they start. All students now have their exam timetables and should be in full swing with their revision programmes. They should be doing at least ten hours per week so we would be very grateful if you could keep providing them with encouragement. They also need to eat well, drink plenty of water and get plenty of rest as it is a stressful time. Our Year 9 students did themselves proud with a poster symposium last week. They produced wonderful displays based on their favourite authors which younger students were able to come and enjoy. Reading is such a vital skill so it's great to provide students with inspiration whenever possible to get them reading. Thanks to all of our English teachers who helped to put the event together. We have a published author coming to visit us soon. Sufiya Ahmed was born in India and arrived in the UK as a baby. She lived in Bolton, Lancashire, before moving to London where she still lives. Sufiya has worked in advertising and in the House of Commons, but is now a full-time author. In 2010 Sufiya set up the BIBI Foundation, a non-profit organisa- tion, to arrange visits to the Houses of Parliament for school children. She will be meeting students and talking about her experiences as a writer and signing books for them. Our Duke of Edinburgh students have been busy over the last few weeks with several groups having gone on, or preparing for their expeditions. We are proud of the fact that we have around 150 students following courses in either the Bronze, Silver or Gold award with our first group of Gold award winners off to Buckingham Palace to have their awards presented to them by Prince Edward. As I mentioned last week, I started the term speaking to all students, recapping our expectations of them around the school. It has been very encouraging to see how courteous and respectful students are towards one another and to- wards staff. Several staff and visitors have commented on how excellent their behaviour is moving around a busy site. I would be very grateful if you could help us in ensuring our uniform code is strictly adhered to by checking your children's shoes, shirts (tucked in) and ties before they leave. My message to students is that the way they behave towards one another should model Christ’s message on treating others the way you would wish to be treated and that school is a place of business so we dress smartly. We have lots coming up this term – Year 10 Parents Consultation evening, Year 6 taster day, Athletics Day, and Year 11 reports are due out during the course of the week. Thanks as always for your support and have a good week Kevin Gritton Headteacher ISSUE NO 10 25 APRIL 2016

After four months of writing we are now ready to send for the

draft copy of this year’s ‘We Are Writers’ book. With a

fantastic front cover (also designed by one of our students!)

the book is filled with stories, poetry and interesting insights

into the life of a teenager. We are really pleased to be able to

offer students and their families the opportunity to purchase

their very own copy of the book and we will writing to you in

the next few weeks with all the details.

A draft version of the book will be available for students to

view in the library from the 16 May 2016. This will coincide

with the Scholastic Book Fair which will also be running that

week (16-20 May). With only one print run, please make sure

you don’t miss out, and at same time help to raise funds for

the school library.

Dr Burrell

We are looking for interested Year 8 and 9 students to join our Carnegie Shadowing Group, giving you the opportunity to contribute to reading, discussing and reviewing the books short-listed for the 2016 award. The Carnegie award is the UK's oldest and most prestigious children's book awards, described by authors and illustrators as 'the one they want to win'. Reviews written by students will be uploaded to the Carnegie website and written on leaves and added to our ‘Carnegie tree’, located in the Library lobby. If you would like to join our group then we meet every

Thursday lunchtime in the library.

Dr Burrell and Mrs Peden
