CURATOR’S CORNERBy Erin Willis

It has been an honor and pleasure to be trusted with the care and curation of the Jane Pope Geske Heritage Room of Nebraska Authors. When I started this job more than 3 years ago, I was overwhelmed by the history and significance of this collection. My time in the Heritage Room has only deepened my regard for the community that works to honor, celebrate and preserve Nebraska’s literary heritage.

The collective energies of Lincoln City Libraries and the Nebraska Literary Heritage Association have made the Heritage Room an increasingly valuable resource in Nebraska and beyond. The programs established by LCL and NLHA, including Lunch at the Library, the John H. Ames Reading Series, the Spelling Bee, and the Annual Meeting, have cultivated a community of readers who are steeped in the history and culture of Nebraska.

Collaborative efforts with community organizations, including Nebraska 150 Books and the recent launch of NebraksaAuthors.org, have invigorated the Heritage Room and drawn widespread attention to the great books produced by our local authors. The legacy of the Nebraska authors is enhanced and strengthened by these efforts. I am proud to have been a part of these projects and I look forward to seeing future NLHA initiatives!

As I conclude my tenure in the Heritage Room, I can’t leave without sharing my appreciation for the time I have spent with this collection. I have enjoyed every opportunity to meet and know the fascinating people who make up Nebraska’s literary community. My professional and personal life has been enriched through the experience of working with NLHA Board Members, LCL staff and patrons who share a passion for our shared literary culture.

Thank you to all of my colleagues, friends and supporters who have made me feel welcome and appreciated in the Heritage Room. I look forward to returning often as a patron!

LIBRARIES = SERVICEWe can all sleep very soundly thanks to the men and women of the Nebraska Army & Air National Guard! Thanks to Captain Doug Carlson, the Friends of Lincoln City Libraries committee had a unique opportunity to tour the Nebraska National Guard base in Lincoln and were truly amazed with what we all learned. We owe a debt of gratitude to all who are serving and have served to ensure that Nebraskans are protected. Major General Daryl Bohac and Captain Carlson met with the group, answered all our questions, and showed us the state-of-the-art facility that serves as the control center for services such as those needed in natural disasters and for military training.

The Nebraska National Guard has a long history of being embedded in Nebraska communities. In fact, the Nebraska National Guard has been in 109 different communities and currently in 23 from Chadron to Omaha. If you see a Soldier or Airman in Lincoln, you are most likely looking at a Nebraska National Guard member.

This community-based force, made up of 4600 Soldiers, Airmen, and state employees, has a federal and state mission. The federal mission is to prepare and deliver combat ready forces for combatant commanders while the state mission is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of our state. The Nebraska National Guard has provided combat capabilities by deploying over 11,000 times since Sept 11th while conducting domestic operations such as hurricane support in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The Nebraska National Guard is ready and able to answer the call for Nebraska and the nation.

Nebraska’s military personnel have chosen a life of service on our behalf. Lincoln City Libraries’ Librarians and staff have also chosen a life of service to ensure that we are able to access the world through our Libraries. Our thanks go out to all these dedicated fellow Nebraskans!

COFFEE ON THE DOCK AT THE MILLThe weather was perfect! The coffee delicious! It was Memorial Day and the crowd was excited to hear the BIG NEWS…the three finalist titles of the 2018 One Book One Lincoln community reading program. The books included: Beartown by Fredrik Backman; Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann; and Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. Beartown explores the hopes that bring a small community together, the secrets that tear it apart, and the courage it takes for an individual to go against the grain. Killers of the Flower Moon is the historical account of the killing off of the Osage tribe and the beginnings of the FBI. Together with the Osage, the FBI agents began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history. Little Fires Everywhere is the fictional story of a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland and explores secrets and relationships in this perfectly planned community.

Readers have been busy this summer reading and submitting their choice for the winner, which will be announced in September. The fun continues this fall with activities surrounding the chosen books. Please mark your calendars and join the following discussion opportunities:

• September 16, 2 p.m., Bennett Martin Public Library, 14th & N for the Understanding Cross-Cultural and Cross- Racial Adoptions program. Program leader Catherine Howard is an adoption social worker with experience assisting families with cross-cultural and cross-racial adoptions. Learn about the adoption process and special counseling given to prospective parents in cross-cultural and cross-racial adoptions.

• September 23, 2 p.m., Gere Branch Library History of the Osage Nation. L. Kilan Jacobs is a Tribal Research Assistant at the Osage Nation Historic Preservation office in Oklahoma will discuss the history and culture of the Osage Nation.

If you’re interested in reading past winners, please visit Lincoln City Libraries’ One Book One Lincoln page for the complete list. NEW ELECTRONICS IN YOUR LIBRARYTechnology and Libraries! Both are becoming more important in today’s world. Thanks to many, the annual Foundation for Lincoln City Libraries Wine & E … supporting technology in Lincoln City Libraries will provide additional funding for enhancing technology in our Libraries. This fun event was held on Thursday, April 19 at the Country Club of Lincoln. FLCL Executive Director, Gail McNair, presented Pat Leach, Lincoln City Libraries’ Director, a check for over $209,000, which represented board activities of 2017, including the annual book sale, the Wine & E, Coffee on The Dock at the Mill, as well as through established endowments. The Foundation’s mission is to enhance the Libraries’ programs and services that are provided free-of-charge to every citizen with a library card — and those are free, too.

A highlight of the evening was the awarding of the first Library Star Award, newly created by the board to recognize an individual or organization who is committed to and has provided outstanding service to the Foundation and to our Libraries. Kathie Putensen, nominated by her fellow library volunteers, is the first recipient of this prestigious honor. Kathy received an etched crystal star and a check for $1,000 which she directed to the NLHA Endowment Fund in support of the Heritage Room and to the Library program, “Begin with Books,” which partners with Lincoln medical organizations to provide training to caregivers and books to children 0 to 5. This honor is a small token of our appreciation for all Kathie does through the year in support of our libraries.

Close to 200 guests enjoyed App-E Hour, where they had their photos taken in libraries throughout the world — through technology, of course. The event also included Artisan Pizza and, thanks to the generosity of many individuals and businesses throughout the area, a silent auction featuring many distinct and unique items. Proceeds will be used to purchase new electronic books, equipment, and materials.

Electronic gadgets are becoming the norm in our world — including the library world. People of all ages are accessing books through new formats — iPads, Kindles, and Nooks to only mention a few. These electronic options are creating much excitement in the library world, and are also “crunching” tight budgets as libraries struggle to meet the growing demands of library users. This new technology is enabling our libraries to connect with our citizens locally, as well as internationally. Thanks to strong community support, Lincoln City Libraries are able to meet the growing needs of our citizens and the community.
