The characteristics that this employee exhibits are the same traits that make for successful workers. Good employees obviously are important in any

business, but small businesses often feel the impact of employee behavior --- both good and bad --- more acutely than larger companies. One bad apple can have a much greater impact on morale in a small organization than in a large

one and, conversely, a good employee's attitude and work ethic can be infectious.

To say 2011 was just a good year for Teracore would be like calling Babe Ruth just another little league ball player! Not only did we hit the game winning “Home Run” in the season final game, we also won the World Series and then some!

The Teracore Business Development team seemed to pull out victories all season long with 8 new contracts/task orders in 2011. In short, they pitched a perfect game each and every time! Business Development Vice President Brian Kendrick emphasized game highlights by saying “that not only are we winning a lot more work, we are also winning bigger and more complex contracts”. Now I am sure all you inquiring minds would like to know just how they did that all season long? Well I have been authorized to release to you; the loyal Teracore employees, the secret game plan we’ve followed!

It all starts with a bullpen of talented and hard working business development team members that are experts at developing solutions that are specifically tailored to each and every client requirement. Sounds good, but there’s more…in addition to a great pitching staff, we have a battery of experienced delivery operations folks that not only assist with the solution designs, but knock the ball out of the park by walking the talk each and every day out in the field. This Teracore team is not just a one pitch pony, but a finely tuned delivery team of heavy hitters that produce results. Here is a brief rundown of this year’s season stats:

Kudos goes out to the Teracore BD and Delivery Operations teams for all their success

during the 2011 season. Is there anything else??? Well… yes there is…thank you for asking. In addition to the

successes we’ve had on the field, we also have a great group of players manning the back office! Although they may not be as well know as some of the stars on the field, just the same their contributions have resulted in a positive impact for the Teracore employees in 2011! Their contributions off the bench include:

• A new Teracore Acquisition Referral Program (TARP) created in May to reward employee referrals for Teracore positions

• A new Teracore Commuter Benefits Program that allows employees to spend pre-tax dollars for commuting expenses

• A new Teracore Workplace Giving Program that allows employees to give back to the charities of their choosing through convenient payroll deductions

There was a lot to be thankful for in 2011 with more to look forward to in 2012. Teracore is now beginning to accelerate into the New Year with an all-star cast of consultants, a healthy financial base of support and a focused strategy to move to the next level of competition. If 2012 is anything like the past year, the next Teracore stop will have us headed directly to the big leagues!

Development team received and responded to this RFP in

less than 14 days while simultaneously responding to many other opportunities this summer. Please join me in

thanking Joe Jamison, Derrick Chacon, and Brian Kendrick

for developing a winning response in such a short time

frame. The Business Development Team asked that

I also recognize Charlene Gatewood for her assistance with the Grants Management aspect of this opportunity.

Companies spend large amounts of energy and money on time management training for employees. But you can improve your performance at work by following these simple steps to organize your work life.

1.Create a task list. There's no way you can tell if you've been productive or not if you don't know what you're supposed to be working on. A task list will keep you on track to meet your goals. This is also a tool that your business can use to track performance management.

2.Prioritize your task list. While everything on the list needs to be completed, some items will be more time critical than others. Focus on the urgent tasks first and tackle the easier items on your list.

3.Don't start new projects until you clear your urgent tasks. Once you're able to complete your tasks you've created time in your day to take on new projects. By continually adding items to your task list you'll soon become overwhelmed by everything you have to accomplish. Besides, you'll learn to love crossing items off your list.

4.Be flexible. There will be some days where all the time management training in the world won't help you get all your tasks accomplished. Stuff happens and you can't get everything done that you want or need to. As long as you recognize this will happen on occasion, you can always go back to your prioritized task list when your time frees up again.

5.Set deadlines for yourself. If you have a set quitting time, even if it's one you made yourself, you'll find that you're more motivated to get your work done. If you don't have a deadline, you can never be late which means motivation may be hard to come by.

6.Lastly, plan your next day at the end of each work day. Take time to review your task list and move incomplete items to the next day. Add new items and prioritize. You'll be amazed at how this simple step will make your work easier to manage.

Teracore employees showed their true compassionate spirit as the inaugural Workplace Giving Program was a great success. The Teracore

family will be giving almost $6000.00 to a variety of charities in the coming year. A 25% participation rate is an excellent start for a first year

program according to our partner-sponsor organization “Americas Charites”. Our plan as we grow is to continue this tradition of giving back to the communities we serve as well as launching a second phase of giving by donating our volunteer time and talents to specific organizations in the

year ahead. Stay tuned…

The easiest way for me to describe “corporate culture” would be to visualize it as an “energy field” that determines how people think, act, and view the world around them. I see it most clearly when I compare culture to electricity. Culture is powerful and invisible and its effects are far reaching. Culture is an energy force that becomes woven through the thinking, behavior, and identity of those within the group.

Corporate culture is created naturally and automatically. Every time people come together with a shared purpose, culture is created. This group of people at work could be a project team, a branch or a company. Culture is automatically created out of the combined thoughts, energies, and attitudes of the people in the group.

The corporate culture “energy field” determines a company's dress code, work environment, work hours, rules for getting ahead and getting promoted, how the business world is viewed, what is valued, who is valued, and much more.

Even now as Teracore has its own corporate culture; there are numerous others that we as

that culture to others? I wonder if we ask every team member of Teracore to define our culture…would it be vaguely consistent. I am not going to try to answer these questions today because I don’t have those answers, but what I will do is ask each of you to think about what your part is in creating a corporate culture and how you influence that culture? Is it positive or negative? Does a corporate culture even matter to an organization? My answer to the last question would be a resounding YES!

As important as it is to recognize the aspects that make up Teracores and our clients culture, it is far more important to recognize that corporate culture is actually just the container for the vision, mission and values of the organization. Ultimately it is you, the Teracore team member; that actually holds the ultimate responsibility for creating the kind of organizations that Teracore and our clients will become. You hold the power to create a thriving, engaging forward thinking organization that leads business in the next decade. It’s your choice. Help us make it amazing!

consultants must operate in to be effective at what we do. For example, the Department of Labor and FEMA may have very different corporate cultures which may be totally different from the culture at Teracore. At times these cultures may even clash which consultants must manage and work in to be effective.

Culture shows up in organizations in both visible and invisible ways. Some expressions of corporate culture are easy to observe. You can see the dress code, work environment, perks, and job titles at Teracore and our clients. This is the surface layer of culture.

The far more powerful aspects of corporate culture are invisible. The cultural core is composed of the beliefs, values, standards, paradigms and private conversations of the people that are part of the group. This is the foundation for all actions and decisions within a team, department, or organization.

Do you have a few questions??? I did as I thought about the culture here at Teracore. Here are some of them. Do we have an existing culture at Teracore? What is it? What do we want it to be? Is it important to be able to articulate

Dear Steve,

What's the number one skill or practice that has contributed to your success in the consulting world?

This column is design for those “in the know” to share with those of us “out of the know." There's no such thing as a stupid question…you

want to know and we’ve got the answer!

Wow….that’s a tough one! That’s like asking the Detroit Tigers what is the one skill that has made them the most dominating team in Major League baseball...tough to name just one thing. But let me answer in a different way using the title of one of my favorite management books: “From the Saloon to the Boardroom: Success Secrets from your Local Bar”. The premise is, success in any business is

more than 50% about exceptional human interaction skills. Business consulting is even more dependent on communications and relationship skills than most businesses. We are unique in that the value of both our product (people providing services) AND the delivery mechanism (people

interacting with human clients) are as dependent on perception as they are on reality. Many times I’ve seen the smartest, most knowledgeable consultant in the room become marginalized on a project simply because he can’t “connect” with his client. One of the toughest parts of consulting is that it can be a very subjective business and you are often only as good as the quality of the relationship

you forge. PS – You still have to be smart and have competencies….it's just that people forget that subject matter competency is not always the main cog in the machine.

Sincerely, Seeking Wisdom

Dear Steve,

What's the biggest challenge (or opportunity) our organization faces and how are we prepared to face this challenge (or take advantage of this opportunity)?

Running a business can be as complex or as simple as you want to make it! All of the challenges we see (and believe me, we have laundry lists of them…both small and large) tend to fall into one of three buckets:

Our biggest challenge currently bounces between maintaining high quality delivery and managing our business

growth. As you have seen and heard, Teracore has been experiencing tremendous sales growth over the last year. This poses a natural challenge to the senior management team to put in place a structure that will provide our

consultants the tools needed to deliver quality consulting services to our growing base of clients. As a small business, our reputation is everything, so we simply can’t afford to blow one project! A complimentary challenge is managing

costs within the business. When you are growing fast, it is tricky to walk the tightrope of spending too much vs. spending too little. For example, we constantly evaluate scenarios for hiring new overhead employees, opening office space and purchasing new technology. If we spend too much, we eat away profit margins from our projects….but if we spend too little, we may limit the ability of our field consultants to deliver what has been promised. The toughest

part is there really isn’t a perfectly correct answer – there is always a gut feel element to the decision.

Sincerely, Future Planning
