TENTATIVE TITLE

Tentative title:-DETAILED INVESTIGATION AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF ROAD INTERSECTIONS OF DHAKA METROPOLITON CITY.

ROAD NETWORK.

The way on the earth surface to move from a point

to another is called a Road. The web of Road inside a city / system, is called

Road Network.

DEFINATION OF INTERSECTION

• An Intersection is the general area where two or more highways join or cross.


CHARECTERISTICS OF INTERSECTION

• Intersections are the modal points of a road network where vehicles are distributed and redirected towards desired destination.



• In Intersection, pedestrians are moved in a safe and systematic way.



It is not the wide roads that increase the roadway capacity ,rather it is the Intersection that :-

Reduces Congestion, Increases roadway Capacity and Promotes Safety for vehicles and pedestrians.



• In a road traffic system, intersections are one of the important bottlenecks.

• Which interrupt smooth flow of traffic and thereby cause delays.



• To avoid unnecessary delay or to get an efficient traffic flow movement, these intersections need to be planned and designed properly and carefully.

• Along with the appropriate road network and geometry, the necessary traffic control devices also need to be applied wisely.


INTERSECTIONS CLASSIFICATION

Intersection can be classified in following categories:-

1)3 Legged Intersection (T and Y type)

2)Staggered Intersection

3)Four Legged intersection/Cross Roads---• Rotary Intersection• Mini Round About• Uncontrolled intersection• Controlled Intersection---

Signalized intersection Priority Controlled Intersection

4)Multi-legged Intersection


DEVELOPED COUNTRIES TREND

To obtain orderly movement of vehicles through intersections----

a) They have strict traffic control rules, regulations and well established planning.

b) They have designing methodology for geometric design of road intersection and as well as standard guide lines for the application of traffic control devices.

c) Because of these practice, clear pattern in queue formation and discharging can be seen from road junctions of these countries.

PRESENT CONDITION OF DHAKA CITY

All major signalized intersections in Dhaka city have got the severe traffic congestion which produce---

a) Long delay and

b) Insurmountable sufferings of the road users.


PRESENT CONDITION OF DHAKA CITY

Main cause of these hazardous situation of Dhaka city---

a) Inappropriate / ill planned road network inside the Dhaka city.

b) Faulty layout of the intersections.

c) Inappropriate synchronization of traffic signals in road network.

d) Arbitrary setting of signal time / phase.

e) Poor policing activities in signal control.


FIELD OBSERVATION OF DHAKA CITY PROBLEM.

Main causes of traffic congestion in our intersections (Dhaka City) mainly because of---

a) Insufficient traffic data,

b) Ill planned / controlled traffic signal,

c) Inappropriate road network and

d) Mismanaged traffic control by police.


FIELD OBSERVATION REVEALED….

a) Faulty geometrical condition of the intersection is responsible for the delay and accidents in many cases.

b) Presence of illegal structures by the side of the road.

c) Unnecessary roundabouts.

d) Un important speed breakers.

e) Improper turning radius.

f) Absence of medians and sign.

g) Faulty control operation of police.

h) Absence of following the lane system.


PROBLEMS IN SIGNAL AT INTERSECTION

a) Manual operation by police.

b) Irrational distribution of signal phases time.

c) Increase delay and queue.

d) Decreases the Level of Service of intersection.


OBJECTIVE OF THIS THESIS

a) To identify the traffic operational problems within intersection area associated faulty geometric plan and design.

b) To determine the better, well planned, low cost traffic signal system under the supervision of police.

c) To identify the proper road network inside the Dhaka city, this can help the traffic operation system.

d) To increase the Level of Service of intersections inside the Dhaka city.


POSSIBLE OUTCOME OF THIS THESIS.

a) Identifications of types and nature of geometrical faults.

b) Identification of the better, well planned, low cost and adaptable traffic signal system.

c) Identifications of the inappropriateness of pattern in road network of Dhaka city, these cannot help the operation system.

d) Identify the techniques of increments of the Level of

Service of intersections in the Dhaka city.

METHODOLOGY.Observing, how junction is operated?a) Red violation

b) Long cycle time

c) Over ride by police


OUTLINED OF PROPOSED METHODOLOGY.

Identifying –a) Poor performance of signalized junction.

b) Faulty geometry.

c) Poor road net & hierarchy –Right turn restriction is not possible.

d) Exclusive left/right turn (left channel at Rangs intersection).

e) High number of phasing.

f) Closely spaced junction/non-uniform midblock hindrance for coordinated signal.

g) Pedestrian facilities & behavior.

h) Bus stoppages.

i) NMV (Non Motorized Vehicle).

j) Ineffective pre-timed signal (Why & identify events – vehicle conflict at junction; unpredicted arrival pattern due to VIP; procession, sudden change of demand).

k) Other side frictions.

l) Why police override signal?

m) SEE pre-requisite of signal design & observed v/c ratios.

n) Unpredictable arrival flow and unmatched green time.

o) Fluctuating Right turn demand.


REDUCE SIGNAL PHASING

Attempt would be taken to reduce signal phases by introducing---

• Improved circulation plan through road network.[ One way in Tikatoli, Shantinagar]
