Brooklyn War Memorial Brooklyn NYSite Analysis

Brooklyn War Memorial No Man’s Land Urban Battleground

The site addresses demands for (geographic & programmatic) connectivity and visibility: Downtown Brooklyn is a vibrant urban center and a transportation hub for the New York City Metropolitan Area; the location of the Brooklyn War Memorial and the Korean War Veterans Plaza enable a micro-network of institutions to be established with nearby academic, judicial, medical, and military entities.

The Brooklyn War Memorial Park & Korean War Veterans Plaza are interpreted as an urban no man’s land, a disputed ground between two transited trenches. Its artificially turfed landscape provides no urban connectivity as it lacks a circulatory system and no programmatic vibrancy as it has insufficient spatial diversity. It frequently becomes, however, a political battleground for public demonstrations.

The site tactics aim to enable urban connectivity, programmatic vibrancy, and semantic friction: the park is conceived as an urban battleground where dialectic conflicts take place between the Brooklyn War Memorial & the rehabilitation center as well as between landscape & architecture; smooth and striated spaces are employed to create spatial relations between these contradictory forces.
