Welcome to the latest addition of The Script, The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy’s alumni publication. In 2016, the college had a number of successes that will advance our teaching, research and outreach efforts. A few of them include:

• We are now sixth among all pharmacy schools in the nation, as ranked by U.S. News and World Report.

• We launched a revised curriculum based on integrated learning. We also increased our practice lab experiences, which will now cross the first three years of the curriculum.

• Peixuan Guo, PhD, our Sylvan G. Frank Endowed Chair in Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery Systems has made great strides in identifying and optimizing RNA nanoparticles, which could lead to a new generation of promising treatments for a number of cancers.

• Mamuka Kvaratskhelia, PhD, a Kimberly Professor at the college, has uncovered a new mechanism for halting the spread of infectious viruses that could pave the way for therapies to combat emerging HIV-1 strains resistant to currently available treatments.

• Jennifer Rodis, PharmD, BCPS, FAPhA, our assistant dean for Outreach and Engagement, helped establish a statewide consortium that offers pharmacist-led medication therapy management services to low-income, high risk patients with diabetes or hypertension.

We also successfully completed our But for Ohio State campaign which resulted in significant increases in our research funding and our student scholarship support. As we look forward to 2017, we will be reaching out to our friends and alumni to support the renewal of our building, which is necessary for us to continue the long tradition of leadership and excellence at the college.

Here’s to a happy and prosperous 2017! Go Bucks!

The first year of our new society membership model was a success! We ended last year with 521 annual members; this year, we have 549 annual members as of December 15.

The society has invested the money from our previous membership dues and created a new scholarship endowment as part of the Ohio Scholarship Challenge. Three new scholarships will be awarded starting in January, for a total of five students supported by the alumni society.

As we changed our membership, the Alumni Association changed how they support alumni societies. We’re receiving more support from staff at the Alumni Association, and we achieved Scarlet Society status for 2015. This means that we are classified as an Outstanding Alumni Society and received $2,000 from the Alumni Association to use toward programming.

Because this has been a time of change for the alumni society, the board has undertaken a strategic planning process to set a trajectory for the future. The goals we’ve set for the next couple of years are shared in this issue. I hope you’ll take the opportunity to get involved and help us achieve those goals.

The college continues to take on new challenges and move forward. I’m proud of the work we’re doing as a society to move with the college. Thank you for being along for the ride. We appreciate your support.

Go Bucks!

Professionally,

Doc Lamberjack, BS '93 President, College of Pharmacy Alumni Society

Pharmacy Alumnus Making a Difference in the War on Drugs

The effect of drugs has reached crisis proportions in the United States. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, overdose deaths are the nation’s leading cause of death, ahead of those from motor vehicles and firearms. Across Ohio, someone died from a drug overdose every two hours and 52 minutes in 2015. In Pennsylvania, more than 3,500 people died from drug overdoses in 2015—a 30 percent increase from the previous year.

These facts did not escape College of Pharmacy alumnus (BS ’97) and Pennsylvania pharmacist Edward L. Christofano, RPh. In addition to managing his robust business as owner of Hayden’s Pharmacy, with locations throughout western Pennsylvania, Christofano has directed his focus on the education about prescription drug abuse and the heroin epidemic that faces the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He serves at the healthcare professional and educator for The Council of Substance Abuse and Youth Coalition and The Westmoreland Drug and Alcohol Commission.

Through his education series “The New Backyard Program – Drug Abuse Awareness and Overdose Prevention,” Christofano has held open forum events in local school districts, public town meetings, other organizations, which distributed more than 1600 narcotic drug lock boxes, and helped community first responders, teachers and parents receive certified training on the administration of Naloxone, a medication used to block the effects of opioids. He also provides education surrounding both the physiological and psychological effects of prescription drug use.

In addition to this education and training program for all audiences, Christofano has created the Narcan Registry Site, the first of its kind in entire country. This Narcan Registry

Site serves as an electronic monitoring system to address two issues that are extremely important to the issuing of Narcan (Naloxone) rescue kits to the public. First, the registry allows patients to register an email or a cell phone number for text messaging for reminders of when the Narcan rescue kit they possess expires and decrease in active drug potency. Secondly, it serves as a “real time” communication for urgent recalls or defects in the Narcan rescue kits. Two very important points to assist the public at large while they possess a life-saving medication. The information provided to the site is confidential and will communicate the reminder message only once.

“As president and CEO of Hayden’s Pharmacy, Ed Christofano has been integrally involved in the communities he serves” said Ken Hale, RPh, PhD, clinical professor, co-director of The Generation Rx Initiative and associate director of Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Drug Misuse Prevention and Recovery at Ohio State. “I am particularly impressed by his strong efforts to help prevent prescription drug misuse. His work improves patients’ lives and makes our communities safer.”

“Being a healthcare advocate for our patients is a great strength we have collectively as retail pharmacists. Controlling the epidemic of prescription drug abuse and the horrific heroin problem is a battle that we as retail pharmacist need to be leaders in the communities in which we serve. We all need to reach beyond the pharmacy retail counters and make the difference in our communities,” said Christofano. “It is through education and a better understanding of potential prescription drug abuse, we can educate all generations on how to recognize the signs and take steps or prevention starting in each and every medicine cabinet.”

After earning his pharmacy degree at Ohio State, Christofano started a career as a retail chain pharmacy manager. He soon grew into other regional management roles with corporate pharmacies.

In 2007, Christofano became an independent owner and operator of Hayden’s Pharmacy, which expanded to four locations serving the Pennsylvania’s Youngwood, Greensburg, Mount Pleasant and Donegal areas.

As an active practicing pharmacist and owner, Christofano provides immunization clinic services, disease state management, flu clinics, and blood pressure screenings through their clinic settings in each location. Outside of his retail pharmacy locations, he has a team of specialists that hold healthcare events at the local shopping malls, and free education series presentations within the community.

Additionally, Christofano has ventured into other community services by offering high-quality vital businesses in small town Pennsylvania: a local grocery store, Youngwood Corner Market in Youngwood and a local 1950s diner, Main Street Deli and Café, in Mt. Pleasant. Both not only serve a community niche, they also operate at the highest standards of customer service.

“The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy faculty and staff has definitely influenced my career as a retail pharmacist and owner—the pharmacy program provided an excellent foundation to build on. A solid foundation of knowledge to be an active community pharmacist and owner of a four store operation with future growth plans in 2017,” shared Christonfano. “We, as pharmacists, should pride ourselves on customer service, convenience, and dedication to the local residents that we serve; a pharmacist that always available to discuss medication and healthcare questions with patients is the tradition of personalized pharmacy.”

College Looks to Alumni to Help Improve, Expand Lab

In response to the tremendous growth and increased rigor of its Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program, The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy is in the process of expanding and improving its student Pharmacy Practice Lab (PPL). The school is reaching out to friends and alumni for the $2 million project, slated for completion in June 2018.

As one of the nation’s top-ten pharmacy schools, Ohio State’s College of Pharmacy continues to create first-class educational opportunities for its students. In 2016, the college launched a revised curriculum aimed at enhancing experiential learning. This course of study now includes two additional years of practice lab experiences, tripling the amount of time students spend in PPL.

To accommodate the program’s burgeoning needs, the expanded advanced practice and pre-clinical space will be outfitted with patient counseling rooms and amenities to encourage team-based learning. Workstations and equipment in the existing lab will be modernized. Video and audio recording equipment will be added throughout all areas.

“In order to maintain our national leadership in tuition affordability, we are looking to our alumni and friends to fund the creation of a Pharmacy Practice Lab fit for the needs of today, yet versatile enough for the growth of pharmacy practice,” said Tom Dauber, College of Pharmacy’s senior director of Advancement. “I am encouraging our alumni and friends to help us prepare future generations of pharmacists making a pledge of support to this vital project.”

The college recently completed a highly-successful fundraising campaign, raising $23 million for student scholarships, teaching and research. Now that this laudable achievement has been met, the college can focus on improving its physical plant.

The need for facility improvement remains great. “Often students end up in the hallways to practice their counseling skills with no opportunity to review their actual performance,” said Katherine A. Kelly, PhD, associate dean for Assessment and Strategic Initiatives. “Our new lab spaces will include counseling rooms equipped with technology allowing students to review recordings of their performance and self-assess progress toward course and program goals.”

PPL pledges can be paid off over a period as long as three years. Gifts toward this effort will receive credit toward football ticket seating points, President’s Club recognition and sustaining memberships in the Pharmacy Alumni Society and The Ohio State University Alumni Association. Donations of $1,000 or more will be permanently recognized. Area-specific sponsorship opportunities within the PPL (workstations, counseling rooms, etc.) start at $6,000.

For information on how you can get involved, visit give.osu.edu/ppl or contact Tom Dauber at [email protected].

Marie-Jo Nassar received the alumni scholarship in 2014 and graduated with her PharmD in 2016. As a student, she helped reboot the College of Pharmacy’s Bone Health and Fall Prevention Program. While in school, the scholarship allowed her to take a lower-paying job that focused on long-term career growth in her field rather than having to work more to make ends meet. She is

currently working as a staff pharmacist at Ohio Health and was recently engaged. “To me, an important part of philanthropy is realizing that no one gets very far without the help of others. And once we do achieve our goals, it behooves us to pay it forward and help future pharmacists,” said Nassar.

2015 Scholarship recipient Jason Anderson completed his PharmD and is currently working toward his PhD in Mamuka Kvaratskhelia’s lab on research for HIV drugs. Because of the support of the Alumni Society, Jason was able to complete an internship at the NIH. “I was given more than enough tools by Ohio State’s College of Pharmacy

to make the world a better place, one patient at a time,” said Anderson.

The College of Pharmacy Alumni Society is the 15th largest donor to the College of Pharmacy and one of the most generous alumni societies on campus. In honor of the recent gift of $158,438.70 to the new scholarship endowment, a summary of giving was created for the alumni society.
