anyone they choose) alerting them to an alarm condition or updating thestatus. Leveraging the technology ofthe Internet, the engineer couldreceive a message from the iSeriescontroller on an Internet enabledpager or mobile phone. Mostremarkable is that all this can beaccomplished without a computer. The NEWPORTTM iSeries device(meter or controller) connects directlyto the ethernet network — not to theserial port of a computer functioningas a “server” and “master” to “slave”instruments connected through serialcommunications. The iSeries devices are also available with RS232,RS422, RS485 and MODBUS serialcommunications (specify the C24option). In fact, the iSeries are thefirst instruments of this type whichinclude all these serial protocols onone device, selectable from a menu.Internet AppliancesWith the EI option, these small 1⁄8 DIN and 1⁄16 DIN instruments arestand-alone Web servers. The ethernet and Web servercapability is actually embedded in the device. (The smallest 1⁄32 DIN size device must be connected to an external iServer.) The NEWPORTTM iSeries device isassigned an IP address on thenetwork and can also be assigned an easily remembered name such

Embedded InternetThe NEWPORTfi iSeries devices can connect directly to an ethernetnetwork with a standard RJ-45connector and can send and receivedata in standard TCP/IP packets.(Please specify EI or C4EI option.)The iSeries devices can serve Webpages over an ethernet LAN or evenover the Internet making it possibleto monitor and control a processthrough a web browser (such asMicrosoft Internet Explorer) fromanywhere in the facility or anywherein the world. Remote ControlFor example, using an iSeries 1⁄16 DINtemperature controller to control aheater, an engineer can monitor thetemperature, change set points oralarm points, turn the heater on andoff, or make other modifications fromanywhere on the local network, oranywhere on the Internet. The webpages are easily customised andsecure password protected access to the devices is easily controlled. And it requires absolutely no specialsoftware on the engineer's computerto view the data and “supervise” thecontroller—nothing other than a Web browser.Email and AlarmIn fact, the iSeries controller can evensend an email to the engineer (or

as “Heater1”. In fact, the devicecould be assigned an authorisedInternet IP address from an Internetservice provider and function as aWorld Wide Web server deliveringwhatever specific information iscalled for. (For an example, pleasesee www.omega.co.uk/iserver)The iSeries devices work well withconventional industrial automation, data acquisition and control programsas well as Microsoft Visual Basic andExcel. NEWPORTTM provides freesoftware and demos which makes itfast and easy to get up and runningwith many applications.

The “iServer” is a DIN raildevice which can be ahub connecting up to 32 instruments to theEthernet and Internet. The “iServer” is both aWeb Server and anEthernet-Serial bridge. To connect to theiServer, iSeries devicesmust feature the “C24”Serial Communicationsoption. The NEWPORTTM

iServer is also compatiblewith the NEWPORT INFINITYfamily of ultra high performance digital panel meters and theNEWPORTTM iDRX family of signal conditioners. The iServercan also connect almost any RS232 or RS485 serial device to Ethernet.

The iServer is an alternate way to connect iSeriesdevices to an Ethernet LAN or Internet. Instead ofconnecting each iSeries device directly to the Ethernetnetwork, with individual IP addresses for each device, the iServer can be a HUB/server for up to 32 devices.
