Thermo Scientific RadEye SPRD-GN is an all-in-one tool designed forrapid, accurate gamma and neutron detection

Security professionals seeking reliable radiat ion detection and identificat ion for remote locations can now use a pocket-sizesearch-and-find detector that is designed for high-sensit ivity and accuracy. Because the new detector combines gammaand neutron detection, first responders and strike teams can now quickly locate a wide range of radioactive materials with asingle device.

The Thermo Scientific RadEye SPRD-GN (spectroscopic personal radiat ion detector – gamma neutron) builds upon the familyof RadEye personal radiat ion detectors. It is designed for use in both dynamic monitoring and isolated sett ings, including ruralborders, on boats and on foot, that are not conducive to larger, fixed detection systems. The RadEye SPRD-GN incorporatesa highly sensit ive, dual sensing gamma and neutron detector. The advanced natural background reject ion (NBR) technologycontinuously analyzes the radiat ion field and easily differentiates between art ificial or natural radiat ion.

The RadEye SPRD-GN is the first handheld PRD to incorporate pulse shape discrimination (PSD), which separates real neutronsfrom high energy part icles in the background. PSD allows the RadEye SPRD-GN to meet the strict ANSI N42.32-2006 standardfor t ime to alarm, alarming within two seconds. Addit ionally, it is the first radiat ion detector to integrate a spectroscopic-capable CLYC (cesium lithium yttrium chloride) crystal. This technology allows for more reliable detection by measuring bothneutron pulse height and shape.

“We designed our newest handheld radiat ion detector with ease of use in mind, so that chemical, biological, radiological andnuclear defense (CBRN) specialists, border inspectors and other first responders can minimize the size and number of toolsrequired in the field,” said Scott Masiella, portables and applicat ions product manager, radiat ion measurement and securityinstruments, for Thermo Fisher Scientific. “The RadEye SPRD-GN complements our exist ing line of dependable personaldetectors. It is a compact device designed for rugged environments to ensure that security professionals and the publicremain safe from radiological threats.”

In addit ion to introducing the RadEye SPRD-GN, new features have also been added to the exist ing Thermo Scientific RadEyeSPRD. The RadEye SPRD, designed for mass deployment by police officers and other first responders in large events, nowincludes:

An intuit ive on-screen interface that guides users toward fast, accurate results; An automatic identificat ion mode designed to provide the isotope and class of art ificial radiat ion within seconds of analarm; andIntuit ive, audible tones and vibrat ion patterns that deliver the radiat ion location and type without the need to view thedisplay.
