We’ve compiled a list of our Top 10 Apps according to their applicability in the classroom, their ability to boost

student learning and growth, and their ease of use.

One basic assumption: we want apps to be free to students, but we are okay with apps that cost teachers to use or to even access a central web capability that tracks students’ progress.

A valuable lesson:Differentiation within apps is normally only available for apps that we buy. While the apps themselves may not be tailorable, teachers can use the app results to adjust their lesson emphasis for each student.

Middle School

Mathematics

Students in middle school are most easily engaged with games or lessons that include avatar/lively icons to encourage and/or instruct. Engaging the students and keeping them engaged is a high priority.

Applying is the highest order of thinking utilized, normally.

Page 11: There's an app for that 6

• At $5 /student, it is a worthwhile purchase • Smartboard compatible!• Focuses on Middle School CC Aligned material

w/variety of quizzes and infinite retries• Teachers receive progress reports that can be

used to tailor/differentiate student lessons• Website includes motivational icon/avatar that

will encourage the student as they develop and give immediate feedback

• Setting up the classroom with student app devices is the most technically difficult part; actual assignments are intuitive, authentic with reasons for real world math problems, and encourage the application of knowledge

• Reason in top ten: The app is strictly a classroom subscription app but ties together positive aspects for all rubric requirements

add/subtract/divide/multiply of number tables• Feedback is instantaneous through progress in

levels of space missions• Students are motivated with this very active

space mission app• The most difficult part is buying the cheap app

and installing for students to play• Teachers- note the app does not mix-match

number table operations to help differentiate• Supports CC standards, and building spaceships

requires some analysis thinking• Recommended this app because kids love the

space rocket theme + bell work is hard to find

• Free, FREE, FREE with apps for each grade level• The app is not flexible; it has set games with

set math operations to solve, so no central assignment creation other than selecting quizzes. No differentiation other than the teacher’s interaction

• Feedback is instantaneous while they apply math skills to solve math problems to help a little chimp travel from place to place

• Students love this animal game that is very much like popular arcade games!

• Supports CC standards by grade level though teachers have to do the work of marrying games to standards for lessons.

• Recommended this app because it supports each middle school grade level with a separate app

Duolingo• A free application that is VERY intuitive -

great for free time work!• The app is semi-flexible; it has set levels

with fixed problem sets • The app helps a teacher differentiate

instruction in the classroom by telling the student the areas where they need to focus and web page reporting can help

• Students receive immediate feedback through progress in the game to the next level, and summaries at the end of a game session tell the students about their weaknesses

• Difficulty of use varies since you can either use the app as a standalone tool (easy) or make it less private and post scores (technical)

• Very authentic because it uses normal conversations in the skill level instruction
