What We Use Propolis Tincture or Oil For

Propolis - Collecting

Propolis Cleaning

5. Repeat steps 2 and 3

until no more debris floats.

1. Smash frozen propolis into little pieces.

2. Put propolis in 5 gallon bucket.

3. With garden hose, fill the bucket

almost to top. Swish propolis around

to loosen debris – it will float.

4. Let propolis settle – it sinks. Skim off

floating wax and debris –by hand, wire

strainer or screen.

9. Once dried, put

propolis in freezer

bag and freeze.

in bucket.. 7. Put piece of screen on tarp, on solid

surface. Scoop out cleaned propolis with

wire strainer or just dump on screen.

Spread out propolis in thin layer.

top – mostly beeswax.

Working with Propolis Dedicated utensils

● Scale - % by weight

Processes

● Use as is - chew - orange teeth

● Freeze and grind - capsules

● Make tincture or infusion with various solvents (water, alcohol, vegetable oil, propoline

glycol, glyserine, acetone (see fao.org - Value Added Hive Products)

● Can mix and shake daily or heat- not above 120oF, stir

● Reuse propolis

● Propolis test for active - in milk

Making Propolis Tincture ● 1%- 50% , by weight

● ex. 5 % -1 part propolis, 19 parts alcohol

by weight (75 proof or higher)

● Weigh alcohol and propolis, put in

2 qt. mason jar with lid

● Shake and put in cool, dark place

● Shake every day for 2-3 weeks.

● Strain into another container.

● Store in a cool, dark place in dark bottle.

Making a Propolis Oil Infusion

• 1% to 10 % by weight

• 10% - 1 part propolis, 9 parts olive oil or coconut oil

• Put weighed oil and propolis (in voile bag)

in a double boiler -old, dedicated pot in a

larger one with about 2 - 4” of water

in it.

• Use a dedicated pot and

thermometer -they will never

come clean again!

• Heat and hold at 120o F for 20

minutes, stirring with a dedicated

spoon

• Pour through strainer or

cheesecloth, organza or

pantyhose to strain, into a storage

container (we use 2 qt. mason

jars). Store in cool dark place.

• Best stored in 1-4 oz. amber

bottles with dropper

Honey - Value Added Forms You can make and use!

● Creamed honey

● Infused, flavored honey

● Bee bread

● Chunk honey

● Ingredient in salves, skin

Making Creamed Honey ● Jar of liquid honey

● “Seed” creamed honey (buy from beekeeper or

market) controlled crystallization makes smooth oval crystals

● 1 tablespoon or more of “seed” into jar of honey

● Stir the crystals in thoroughly and screw lid on tight.

● Store in cool place or fridge for about two weeks.

Turn jar over every day to mix.

● In 2 weeks - smooth, non drip,

spreadable, creamed honey.

Making Infused / Flavored Honey

● 1-2 TBSP dried herbs, 1 cup honey

● Mix together in jar

● Store in tightly covered jar

● Turn over each day or so, for 1-6 weeks

● Refrigerate, if using fresh materials
