1 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007 V With all the uncertainty surrounding the beginning of the season it is with great anticipation and relief that I welcome you all to the commencement of the 2007 season. No doubt you are all eagerly awaiting the start and can’t wait to get things started. Everybody involved with community football in Victoria have worked hard to ensure the grounds and facilities are in good order for the season and everyone needs to be congratulated on their efforts. We begin this season with two new clubs, South Mornington in D4 and St Francis Xavier in Club XVIII Section 1. South Mornington combined with Powerhouse last season to field an Under 19’s team and this year they stand alone as a senior club and we look forward to them fulfilling their goals in the future. St Francis Xavier is a newly formed old boys’ team from a co-educational school in Beaconsfield. As is evident from these two new teams, the growth areas of football are in the outer metropolitan areas. The Under 19’s continue to grow with two additional teams making 5 equal sections of 10. The Club XVIII competition is flourishing with eight new teams this season. Not everyone is suited to the two or three nights of training and match day and therefore Club XVIII plays a great role in meeting the needs of our clubs. Mt Lilydale, premiers in Section 2, has rejoined the seniors and will compete again in D4. The scheduling of this year’s matches has been very complicated due to issues regarding ground availability mostly stemming from the drought. All clubs have had their training severely restricted and ground usage for their Saturday games will be affected. As a result some Under 19 matches will be played on a Saturday morning at 9.20am, prior to the reserves, and other games will be played on venues not often used in the VAFA. We thank the clubs and the twenty-two councils who oversee these clubs, for their cooperation. The VAFA does not prioritise the competition and will endeavour to treat each match with equal importance. There will be no favourites with regard to the scheduling of matches and each query will be handled uniformly. During the off season, illicit drugs use and sledging by AFL players has taken up much of the football time. The VAFA have a responsibility to ensure that the games are played in a safe environment and are being enjoyed by all. The VAFA’s motto is Fostering Family Football. Illicit drug use does not foster family football. The VAFA is working closely with Vic Health and is reviewing its policies on the matter and we will advise the clubs of our position more formally in the future. Sledging is something that the VAFA does not condone in any form. I believe that we are the only competition that has a send off rule for audible obscenity. This rule creates a mental discipline to the players and this discipline transfers to other areas. In the VAFA we have great respect for our umpires and in part this rule assists with the implementation of our policies. Representative Football will again be of great importance this year. We are disappointed the A – D4 match against the SFL has been cancelled due to the drought as this game has been very competitive over the years. However the Under 19’s will be having two matches, against AFL Queensland and the VCFL, the Under 23’s will play the SAAFL and our senior team mix it against the VCFL as they play for the Brian Moloney Cup. We trust that these fixtures will provide extra motivation for our leading players. There are thousands of stories that will unfold over this season and to assist us to spread the Amateur message, I am pleased to welcome Russell Gould as the Communications Manager of the VAFA. Russell is currently a journalist/editor of mX newspaper and is a former Amateur Footballer scribe and VAFA player. Please contact him at [email protected] if you have any stories of interest. Good luck to the five thousand players and two hundred and thirty umpires who will actively participate in this weekends matches. It is the start of a six month journey which will hopefully be a rewarding experience for you and all your clubs’ supporters. With all the uncertaintysurrounding the beginningof the season it is with greatanticipation and relief that Iwelcome you all to thecommencement of the 2007season.

No doubt you are all eagerly awaiting the start and can’twait to get things started. Everybody involved withcommunity football in Victoria have worked hard to ensurethe grounds and facilities are in good order for the seasonand everyone needs to be congratulated on their efforts.

We begin this season with two new clubs, SouthMornington in D4 and St Francis Xavier in Club XVIIISection 1. South Mornington combined with Powerhouselast season to field an Under 19’s team and this year theystand alone as a senior club and we look forward to themfulfilling their goals in the future. Mt Lilydale, premiers inSection 2, has rejoined the seniors and will compete againin D4.

The scheduling of this year’s matches has been verycomplicated due to issues regarding ground availabilitymostly stemming from the drought. We thank the clubsand the twenty-two councils who oversee these clubs, fortheir cooperation.

The VAFA does not prioritise the competition and will

endeavour to treat each match with equal importance. There will be no favourites with regard to the scheduling ofmatches and each query will be handled uniformly.

During the off season, illicit drugs use and sledging by AFLplayers has taken up much of the football time. Illicit drug usedoes not foster family football. 5. St Bernards -Remember those StBernards teams wherethere were half a dozenblokes who could kickten on you and the rest ofthe side were complete nut-bags? Well the modern versionis a bit more low key but they’ll certainly be a factor thisyear. If anything, they’re definitely due for a change of luck.Jumping ship are Brett Cook (Kyneton) Jacob Spinella (OldEssendon) Andrew Gill and Liam Wilkinson (Point Coin).

6. Old Brighton - Pre-game solariums, a howling, soul-destroying Antarctic gale and an A Section record that is,quite honestly, an absolute rotter. Brighton have beendismissed as jokers but I reckon they may be OK – theylose Nick Perry (retirement) but have added some veryhandy recruits, including Mark Ainley (East Perth & NorthMelbourne) and Marcel Bruin (Springvale). A genuinewildcard.

7. Collegians - They may have lost their coach but theWesley club have done well to retain most of theirpremiership side, together with a few handy pick-ups inCraig Robbins (Maffra) and Daniel Strachen (Coburg).Apart from the fact that it takes half a day to find car parkat the Trott and the glut of De Grade celebrities in the theirlower ranks, it’s good to have the oldest Amateur club backin the mix.

8. Old Scotch - The Cardinals lost me in about five minutesafter witnessing their First Semi Final last year. They alsolost their skipper (Berenger) to Old Camberwell and theirbest utility (Wigney) to Old Carey. But they’re always cannyrecruiters (Adam Houilhan joins) and they’ll have a wholeheap of very good kids from a cracking 2006 APS side.Tempted to, but won’t write ‘em off.

9. Old Trinity - Trinity have lost Damien Buttler to the‘burbs – that’ll hurt. They also lose Fraser Cameron, whodragged a host of players over to Fitzroy, ala Kim Hugheson the South African rebel tour (only joking scribe). Alwayshard to get a handle on Trinity – Ramsden and Cultrerahave stayed loyal and Jack Healy and Scott Krakour return.Reserving judgement – the sort of team who can beatanyone on their day.

2 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007V

A fortnight ago, I hunked my way down to my local ground, hoping to catch a bit of A Section action. Alas, all Iencountered were a couple of old pervs and a bunch of kidsthrowing bricks at one another. Totally rattled, I switchedon to 96.5 Inner FM but all they could give me was an hour-long Finnish folk festival. It then dawned on me – droughtand cashed up suburban clubs are the scourge of amateurfootball but even they cannot detract from what looms asthe most even A Section in living memory.

1. Old Xavs - Even, that is, with the exception of theseguys. They’ve lost Ford, Mollard and Lethlean to retirementbut get back Matt McCarthy (Geelong), Cam Purss(Werribee) and Nick Serafini (from overseas). They alsopick up the very handy Nick Bye (North Ballarat) NickDimattina (Port Melbourne) and Dustin Lloyd (Rye). That,my friends, is good list management – Lock ‘em in,mortgage the house. Before anyone starts throwing wobblies, bear in mind thatI rate the next nine teams fairly evenly and thus, it is prettymuch a token gesture that I go….

2. Uni Blues - Plenty of people willing to write off the Bluesover summer but the tide is turning. Contrary to internetskulduggery, Patterson remains. They’ve also got a bevy ofyoung guys from the country, of which little is known. Notgoing very well am I? A shattering Preliminary loss will stilllinger in their minds but this will be a new look outfit andthey loom as very much a mystery side. Luke North isoverseas and Tom Wilcox has retired.

3. De La Salle - I’m not totally sold on De La. Lots of catsaround town reckon this is their year but the fact remains– a/ they can’t beat Xavs and b/ they can’t beat Uni. Theyregain Rob Bonnici from England and Viv Buckley from theVFL but lose Damien Rayson to Coburg, David Lowe tooverseas travel and my soon-to-be flat-mate Luke Seager, who did his knee in a Bikram Yoga class. The jury is stillout.

4. Old Ivanhoe - Amateur football is a young person’sgame these days – lots of quick, little blokes on their PPlates. As such, older, wiser heads and stronger bodies area something of a novelty and Ivanhoe has it in bucket-loads. Were going along very nicely until injury derailedtheir August so they’ll have a lot to prove. Luxon returnsfrom Queensland, Hope is fresh and firing and they’re inthis up to their ears.

10 - Old Haileybury - The Badlanders adjourned to DarrenSeccull’s farm to celebrate their stellar Premiership win lastyear. The way things are shaping up, I reckon most of ‘emare still in the barnyard. Corrigan’s gone to play in theGeelong league, Jenke is sitting out because of workcommitments, Martin, McIntyre and Brown are off to theVFL, Trollope and Steinfort have packed up and young gunTom Chisholm is an indefinite out with a back strain.Seccull and Stewie Loewe are fronting up again but they’repushing forty. Three years ago, I picked Nicholson’s StBernards to finish in the drop zone and I reckon I’m luckyhe didn’t burn down my house. This time around, I’mwilling to take the risk – goodbye Premiership Cup, hello BSection. Not even you could pull this off Nicko.

Round 1 TriviaCan you name six Amateur footballers who have featuredon that old chestnut, the Sunday Herald Sun weddingpage? First correct answer [email protected] wins a slab of amber.

Round 1 selectionsI’ll go Brighton, De La, Haileybury (yes), Xavs and Blues

welcome return asCoach. The loss ofChunky and we believePapaluca is not goingto help his cause but the improvement the youngones gained in A last year will be of great benefit. Tobe watched closely.Old Melburnians – Have had a disastrous last coupleof years almost losing their entire list. But I believeRussel Morris has generated tremendousenthusiasm around the place and they look forwardto a promising season. But one wonders whether theloss of Lacey and James Beaumont can be offset bya few games from Simon Beaumont, the first 4weeks will tell.St Bedes Mentone Tigers – Return very quickly aftera one year sojourn in C grade a tremendous effort byall concerned. A tough act to follow winning 3premierships in a season. But haven’t lost too many, have recruited a great player in Ben Phibbs, havesome walk up starts from the U19’s, a great coach inLuke Beveridge who keeps them on the straight andnarrow and the advantage of Brindisi Street. Expectthem to go well.Ajax – Fantastic year probably should have won theGame of the Century but was not to be. Will miss theexperience of Tim O’Shaunessy as the main man butthat is to taking nothing from new gun Stewie Powellwhose record at St Kevs is impeccable. Have pickedup a giant to play CHF which just adds to aformidable list. Sure to impress.

PREVIEWAlways terribly hard to tip winners in Round 1 asanything could happen and more so in this staggeredstart so I will be very staid in my initialprognostications and will go with all the home sides.OEG will repeat their practise match win overMHSOB. OM’S at the Junction will just give “The Fly”a first up win. Marcellin in their first test will finish tothe fore of Beauy. Blacks to get home at the Uniagainst a super competitive Jackers outfit, while theflag unfurling and a huge home crowd including mewill see the Tigers over the line.

B SECTIONby Tom Brain

Finally after months of uncertainty, the longest preseason imaginable we are away, we get a start and allour ambitions and hopes go on the line. I wish allparticipants well both players and officials in whatpromises to be yet another intriguing season ofAmateur Football.

SEASON AHEADOld Essendon – Finished third last year so obviouslywill be looking to maintain and improve on that. Thereturn of the Biggs Brothers plus the recruitment ofU19 State Rep Jake Spinella adds to a strong list.Darren Handley in his 2nd year will know his chargesbetter so a good season is again in the offing.Caulfield Grammarians – Next highest placed in2006 and a great performance in the first semi. Havekept nearly the entire list intact and with the influx ofsome young blood are sure to trouble every oneagain. A pretty tough pre season though.Uni Blacks – Stiff in the end in their first year back tomiss the finals. Will be smarter from that and be keento consolidate and improve. The addition of HuwLacey plus a few returns and a few new recruitscertainly makes Michael Rizio’s side one to watch.Beaumaris – Very good year last year to consolidate. But again for some incredible reason the travel bughas hit the Sharks and a few of them have venturedoff into the overseas skies. But a man would be a foolto write off a side coached by Russell Barnes.MHSOB – New coach Mark Murray took the youthpolicy last year and blooded some fine youngstersculminating in a top second half of the year. Aided bytheir excellent senior players has me thinking thisside will further improve and must be watched.St Kevin’s – Traumatic season but did enough tohang on. The loss of Paul Greenham and Ryan Chardtwo of the main reasons of survival will really hurt.New Coach Michael Duggan knows his footy has hadplenty of numbers on the track and is looking formuch improvement from the SKOB unit who back atRighetti have a base in which to work.Marcellin – Haven’t been here for a while and won’twant to be here long. Murray Browne makes a

about them, I’mgoing to put them inmy bottom two.Petty, yes, but if I’mnot hearing hype, Idon’t take it as agood sign. NOBs Michael Barker is as talented asany forward in the division, but needs the midfielddelivery for his side to benefit from his talents, whilst the signing of John Barker intrigues.

The lack of a cohesive preseason program for manyteams (and maybe some media 'black bans'?)makes these assessments somewhat difficult, so Iwouldn't be surprised if, at least early on,expectations are turned on their head. But it's the'sturm and drang' of this unpredictability that makesit exciting. Bring it on, I say!

ROUND ONE PREVIEWThe first game up for preview sees 2006 D1Premiers Old Carey travel to Gillon Oval to take onNorth Old Boys/St. Patrick’s, who were eighth lastyear. The Panthers as mentioned earlier have threerecruits from A Section clubs, as well as anassortment from other sections and local leaguesand are quite balanced in all parts of the ground.NOBs have also been active on the recruiting front, but I'm not expecting big things right away. ThePanthers will miss 'Dolly' Parton, but should still putout a good side with Steve Collins, Travis Bull, PeteTiras, et al. I'm gonna go Old Carey on this one.

Next up is Mazenod OC and Parkdale Vultures atCentral Reserve. The Nodders have lost Dom Dunneto VFL club Sandringham, but the return of theaforementioned trio from injury should more thanmake up for that. However, apart from the midfield, there are a lack of names that jump out and demandattention. For the Vultures, Tony MacGeorge is stilldoing the business, and along with O'Meara andwhichever Sullivans and Barrs are playing this year, but the loss of Stephens and Hecker tempers thissomewhat. Tricky to call, but I'll take Mazenodtoday.

C SECTIONby Peter Williamson

INTRODUCTIONHello readers and welcome to Season 2007! Thisyear’s C Section promises to be a tight affair, withall four new teams (Whitefriars and Mazenod fromB Section, and Old Carey and Rupertswood fromD1 Section) all promising to add a new dimensionto the competition.

In short, I am taking Old Camberwell as my earlyseason favourites, with the acquisition of many topline players strengthening Paul O’Shaughnessy’sarsenal, despite the loss of Brent Christie. Othercontenders must include Fitzroy Reds, withnewcomers Scott Dann, Anthony Kenna and MattDavies set for a big year; Ormond, who bloodedplenty of youngsters while playing finals football in2006; and newcomers Old Carey, who haveacquired former Old Scotch trio Tom Wigney,Robert Josephs and James Ross, and ex-OldTrinity man Jon Mai, are a good dark horse formine. Parkdale Vultures must also come intoconsideration, and it will be interesting to see whatinfluence new key defender Rochford will have.

Whitefriars, relegated from B Section, have nothad an ideal preseason in terms of availablepersonnel, and at this stage, pending anydevelopments in that regard, I’ll be keeping themsafe. But certainly the loss of Jordan and GrantHill, plus Rob Petracca will hurt. Mazenod, especially if the likes of returnees Jerome Dunn,Michael Chamberlain and Sam Reed can stay injuryfree and play to their full talent, should finishsomewhere in the middle.

D1 runners-up Rupertswood, who have enjoyed agreat run since joining the VAFA in 1999 areanother in this category. A strong running, skilfulside, they should match up against most teamsand will be particularly difficult to beat at home.Time will tell if they can adjust to this level as wellas they’ve done in the lower levels previously.

That leaves Monash Blues, and North Old Boys/St.Patrick’s, and as I’ve heard nothing from anybody

VAFA RNd 1 07.qxd 26/4/07 11:04 AM Page 14

Rupertswood made their C Section bow at E.E. GunnReserve up against Ormond with both sides full ofexciting youngsters. The home side can boast Bryceand Leigh Deledio, David Robbins and RobertChisholm, along with the veteran leadership of MattMcConvill. For Rupo, Dave Collins, Tom West andLeigh Brennan will provide the drive and momentum.Rupo will definitely be competitive and take it right upto the Monders, but I think the home side may be toopolished for the visitors today. Ormond to win.

Monash Blues host Fitzroy Reds at Frearson Oval in aclash of the primary colours. Word on the street (andin the chatrooms) is that the Reds are primed for abig season while the Blues will have, well, the blues, and struggle, especially with no 'Spider' Smith. ButRound One always produces a surprise or two, andMonash will be looking to catch the Reds short. Can'tsee it happening today, especially if Tim Davis andJeremy Rawlins are on song. The 'Bolsheviks' to win.

Finally, it’s Whitefriars versus Old Camberwell atWhitefriars College Oval. The Wells have recruitedstrongly, securing (deep breath) Tristan Berenger,Ryan Chard, Gabriel Deane-Johns, Rayden Tallis andTom Bayford, amongst others. In contrast, theFriars have lost some key personnel, and may stillbe in a period of adjustment. With the continuedfirepower of David Loats in the goalsquare, and theaerialism of Ryan Chard, I'm gonna take OldCamberwell on this one.

CONTACT Match reports, milestones, social events, andanything else can be sent to me via email [email protected] [email protected].

I am keen to hear from all clubs and establish adegree of parity as far as publicity goes. Pleasekeep your match summaries to 50-100 words ifpossible (due to space restrictions), but I amcertainly happy to take on board any othercomments, be it about the match or other things.Remember, this is about your club, so make themost of it. • Joke of the Week18 year-old Patrick goes to confession. "Bless me Father, for Ihave sinned. I have been with a loose woman!" he says...The priest asks, "Is that you, little Patrick?""Yes, Father, it is.""And who was the woman you were with?""Ah, I can't be telling you that, Father, I don't want to ruin herreputation now.""Well, Patrick, I'm sure to find out her name sooner or later, soyou may as well tell me now. Was it Bridie O'Shaunessy?""I can't say Father - honestly.""Was it Ginger Murphy?""I'll never tell.""Was it Rosie Brady?""I'm sorry, but I can't name her.""Was it Mary O'Callaghan?""My lips are absolutely sealed Father.""Well I'll bet it was Suzie O'Brien, then?""Please, Father, I can't tell you for it wouldn't be fair on her."The priest sighs in frustration. "You're very tight lipped, Patrickand I admire that. But you've sinned and have to atone. Youcan't be an altar boy now for 4 months. Now you go andbehave yourself and don't let me see you again for a whilenow."Patrick walks back to his pew, and his friend Murphy slidesover and whispers,"What'd you get?""Four months vacation and five good leads!"

• A Good Day’s Night! The Hampton Rovers AFC & the wider community werebrought together as one to support the fight againstdepression and to help out a great clubman in Joel Day.Saturday 28th April’s function was a huge success raising$20,000 for the Day Family while raising awareness ofdepression. 360 people passed through the doors at BossJames Reserve making it one the biggest Roversfunctions ever.

• NEW YEAR – NEW CLUBSWelcome to the 2007 season and finally we are underway.FTLOTG would like to welcome our 2 new clubs to theAssociation, St Francis Xavier OC and South Mornington.St Francis Xavier OC is a brand new club based atBeaconsfield and will compete in Club XVIII (2) in theirinaugural year. South Mornington joins us from theSouthern Football League and will compete in D4. SouthMornington was a partial member of the VAFA last seasonwhen they formed an U19 side with the assistance ofPower House in U19 (South). Their U19 side has gone intorecess for this season to ensure their Reserves side is viablebut will return next season with strong numbers from theirjunior club. South Mornington will be coached in theirinaugural year by local legend Sein Clearihan and StFrancis Xavier will be lead by former Pakenham playerand coach Justin Pearson. Good luck to these clubs andevery success as they begin their VAFA journey.

• Cystic Fibrosis Cup CancelledUnfortunately, due to the delayed start to the season, one ofthe regular highlights of the VAFA’s representativeschedule has been cancelled for this year. George Voyage’sA-D4 side which takes on the Southern League annuallyfor the Cystic Fibrosis Cup has been a victim of the needto play regular season matches over the June long-weekendin both competitions. George, who is undefeated againstthe Southern League, has offered is services to assistant theother representative teams in whichever way he can. Givenhis record and the results from other games last year, he issure to be a valuable asset.

• Representative MatchesEven with the cancellation of the Cystic Fibrosis Cup for2007, the VAFA has a very busy representative schedulethis season. The VAFA’s first representative match sees theU19 side take on Queensland U21 in their return matchfrom last season. The match will be played at SportscoverArena on Sunday June 10th commencing at 1pm. The U19side will again be coached by Justin Pickering who will behoping for much more favourable conditions than theyencountered last year in Brisbane. The VAFA U19 side willalso take on the VCFL U19 side on July 15th at eitherBallarat or Shepparton. The VAFA U23 side meets old foe South Australia in thefinal match of the AAFC Tri-Series on July 14th inAdelaide. The VAFA must rely on South Australia beatingWestern Australia on June 2nd, then defeat South Australiahandsomely to have any chance of retaining thechampionship. The side will be lead by former St Kildaand Melbourne Defender Jamie Shanahan, who will beassisted by former St Kilda team-mates Nathan Burke andJason Daniels, as well as former Old Haileybury Coach

$1,000 was also raised for Beyond Blue, the nationaldepression initiative, through the selling of bluewristbands.Highlights from the night also included Billy Brownlessand Tim Watson auctioning items including a morning withthe SEN Morning Glory crew, Billy telling the famous“kick after the siren” and “kick over the silo” stories, andmany more. The club would like to thank everyone involved: fromthose who volunteered theirservices in both organising thenight and helping out on the night,to those who donated andpurchased auction items anddonated on the night. Mick Dwyer who has been appointed Chairman ofSelectors. The Senior representative side meets the VCFL in their bi-annual clash for the Brian Molony Cup on July 15th ateither Ballarat or Shepparton. Having lost the last twomatches against the VCFL, the VAFA are very keen toensure the ledger returns to square (currently 5-4 in favourof the country). A coach for the VAFA side is yet to benamed, although several high profile candidates are beingconsidered for the role. An announcement will be madeshortly.

Vale – John WilsonJohn Wilson, VAFA Life member and formerrepresentative coach, passed away on Friday April 20.John had been battling illness for some time. John was an outstanding contributor to the Caulfield

Grammarians’ Football Club from the time he leftCaulfield Grammar in 1945 until he retired as a playerafter the 1955 season. John coached the senior teamfrom 1961 to 1971, winning the D Section flag in hisfirst season culminating in the outstanding win in the ASection premiership in 1970. Both John and Liz continued to support the clubthroughout the years in an outstanding manner. Inrecent times, JA would even mark the ground for us onFridays before taking up his seat on Saturdays to cheeron the Fields. His encouragement to all players andcoaches, up to and including the 2006 season, wasgreatly appreciated and acknowledged by all. He wouldfiercely defend CGFC whenever it was necessary. John was also recognised for his outstandingachievements within the amateur football code bybeing awarded VAFA life membership in 2003. Inaddition to serving on the permits and registrations areaand committee of VAFA football for many years Johnalso coached a VAFA representative team in 1971. Hehad an association with amateur football extendingover 62 years. One of the greats, John will be sorely missed but hasleft a lasting legacy of exceptional commitment to theVAFA and CGFC. Our thoughts are with Liz and thefamily at this sad time.

Maybe / Maybe NotOld Paradians – Itwould be a tough call totip the Bundoora boysfor a ‘double drop’, andI’m not about to suggestthat here. No doubt Mark Spinoso is taking charge of aclub which is ‘rebuilding’. Unfortunately, they can’tafford to ‘bottom out’ because that would mean only onething in VAFA footy….nup it won’t happen.

Prahran – With Paul Greenham taking over from Staff, the change at the top will bring new ideas and somefresh enthusiasm to the list. I understand some handyinclusions have arrived, and this may mean a bettershowing by the Two Blues in ’07.

Oakleigh – a bit of a smoky, they’re coming into D1boasting a very handy home ground advantage. Nodoubt they will play hard physical footy, and every sidewill be happy to leave Scammell Reserve with thepoints.

Peninsula – the longest journey in the VAFA? Well theywere until South Mornington joined the club XVIII!!! ThePirates will be keen to jump another rung in a hurry, given their solid junior program and the gains of lastyear.

BattlingBulleen Temp – controversial, maybe. However, they’velost several quality young players who were expected toplay major roles in their rebounding from last years’astounding round 18 debacle. Whilst their U19s won theflag last year, stepping into senior footy is a differentthing altogether. Will need to finish strongly.

Yarra Valley – apparently not as deep in their list as theywould want, and need to keep their best 22 on the parkas often as possible to be a chance for a finals’ repeat. The Bushrangers are known for fighting against theodds, and at this staged, they’re stacked against them.

Therry Penola – is this another amateur club sufferingfrom being surrounded by suburban clubs with cash?Methinks so and, despite the Herculean efforts of theirlong standing players and committee, I can’t help butthink something’s gotta give in 2007.

D1 SECTIONby Fraser Cameron

Welcome one and all for yet another season ofgrassroots VAFA family footy. Those who were keenreaders of last years’ Amateur Footballer will haverealized that “Willo” and myself have experienced apromotion / relegation of our own as scribes, with Peterstepping up to C section to replace myself. Restassured, my relegation was self-induced (due to an off-season change of clubs) but I’m sure Old Paradians andHampton Rovers will hope to give me plenty of goodthings to report during 2007!!!!

There’s been plenty of rumor mongering during theextended off-season, and with the inevitable 2 weekdelay to the season proper, it’s high time we found outwhat’s truth, and what’s fiction. At the start of theseason, every team’s hopes will be high, but there’s nodoubt some will be more hopeful or optimistic andgenuinely confident.

Unfortunately, access to facilities and grounds is likelyto play a big part in the early season form of mostteams. Those who have managed to train regularly (ongrassy grounds with Sherrins), rather than haphazardly(on basketball courts or on the beach), will have animmediate advantage.

So, with only a modicum of confidence, let’s have aquick rip through the teams which make up D1 and thenlook forward to these weekends’ clashes.

FlyingOld Geelong – with a couple of losses, but manyacquisitions, the Como Park boys will be keen to atonefor their surprise exit last season. They have good depthand will take a power of beating in 2007

Old Mentonians – I’ve seen the OMs first hand and it’sno surprise, given the quality of their home ground atthe moment, that they are way ahead in their preparationthan most sides should be. Ben McGee has introduceda greater level of hardness and discipline to the club, and this should see them thereabout at the right end ofthe season.

Hampton Rovers – just knocked off Monash by 12 goalsa fortnight ago, and have had a ‘feel good’ off seasonwith some fundraisers and a change of coaching staffgenerating many positive vibes at Boss Reserve. Shouldchallenge strongly.

26 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007V

Welcome all to the new season. 2007 promises to be anexciting year with plenty of surprises, and let’s hope thatmy tipping performance can improve on my woefulshowing in 2006.

Congratulations on winning promotion and a bigwelcome to D2 for South Melbourne Districts andBentleigh. To Emmaus St Leos and Banyule good luck intrying to get back up to D1 again.

My predicted ladder:1. Aquinas OC2. Emmaus St Leos OC3. Werribee AFC4. Salesian AFC5. South Melbourne Districts6. Glen Eira AFC7. Williamstown CYMS8. Banyule AFC9. St Johns OC10. Bentleigh AFC

To those teams I have picked to make the finals best ofluck, and to those who I have chosen to miss out, pleasetry and prove me wrong.

Emmaus St Leos OC AFC $1.40 v Bentleigh $2.70My spies have told me that Emmaus St Leos new coachBen Pilley has put his players through an arduous pre-season, and the goal for 2007 is to get straight back upto D1. Baranello, D’Amico and McKenzie are all classplayers and the Animals are sure to be thereaboutscome finals time. The success of Bentleigh this year willcome down to one man. Chris Sharp. The bald headedgoal kicking machine doesn’t really look like a footballer, but he has an excellent knack of finding the footy andkicking goals. If he gets injured the Demons willstruggle. Being unsure of how many or if anyDimmatina’s will be pulling on the red and blue thisseason and taking on a team that won four games in D1in 2006, I expect Emmaus St Leos to be too strong inthis one. Emmaus St Leos by 37 points.

Glen Eira AFC $1.70 v Williamstown CYMS $2.05Glen Eira look to have held on to the majority of their

better players for 2007,and with skipper AlexTsirogiannis goingaround once again theSaints should bepushing for a finals berth come September. My mail isthat Steve Vamvakis has been on fire during the pre-season, snagging a bag of eight goals in one practicematch, and the experienced forward could be a nicevalue bet for the sharp shooter award this year.Williamstown did extremely well to avoid relegation in2006 and after making an atrocious start to proceedingslast season the boys from Willy will surely be ready toput some early wins on the board. With Tim Wheeler,Ben Hynes and Shaun McGuiness all facing up for yetanother season there is enough class in the ranks fromthe side across the West Gate, but at Packer Park Iexpect Glen Eira to be too strong. Glen Eira by 12 points.

Werribee AFC $1.50 v Banyule AFC $2.40Werribee have always been hard to beat at SoldiersReserve and with an excellent junior program in theWestern Suburbs the Tigers are sure to play an exciting, fast paced type of football this season. The departuresof Nathan Addamo, Daniel Lee, Ben Stornebrink andDean Whitten are sure to be felt, but new coach KirkNorton is sure to have done his homework during thepre-season and will have his troops ready to fire first-up. Banyule impressed during the pre-season with a tengoal victory over the Monash Gryphons, but have had afew of senior players join Kew in the off season, andalthough a couple of handy acquisitions from McLeodare sure to fit in well, a trip to Werribee in the openinground is a stiff proposition. Expect the experiencedheads of Keogh, Kidd, Carson to get Werribee over theline by 31 points.

27THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2007V

Salesian AFC $1.33 v South Melbourne Districts $3.10Despite the retirements of Ivan Bobetic and MarkCanavan, Salesian should once again feature in thefinals race in 2007. With Mick Hazell arguably the mostpolished footballer in the division, Salesian have a guythat can win a game off his own boot with a bag ofgoals. Big ruckman Patty Dunne is probably the keyplayer for Salesian and new coach Robbie Mallet will behoping for an injury free season from his number onetall. Simon Ionnides and Dimitri Kalogiannis are theyoung players to keep an eye on for the team fromChadstone and with the possible signing of NickRutherford, Mallett should have plenty of talent at hisdisposal. South Melbourne are ready for the step up toD2 and as long as Paul Cheevers and Steve Aqulina canstay fit I expect them to perform admirably in thisdivision. Tough ask to travel to Bosco Street first uphowever. Salesian by 22 points.

St Johns OC $2.40 v Aquinas OC $1.50St Johns have done well to recruit Chris Cachia andRobbo from Syndal Tally Ho but will sorely miss theservices of John Ryan up forward this season. Aquinason the other hand were close to promotion during 2006and with veteran Glen Whitehead once again captainingthe club I expect the side from Ringwood to go well thisseason. All the early money for the premiership hascome for them. These are the type of games that theJocs failed to win last season, and unfortunately for theboys from Doveton I expect Aquinas to win this one by25 points.

tribute to the quality ofDon’s work.In perfect conditions, the Old Xavs unfurledthe 1998 A Section Flagat Toorak Park andthen proceeded topummel their opponents, St Bernards, unmercifullyin the first term kicking 10.2 to zero. As theafternoon wore on things did not get much better forSt Bernards as Xavs dominated all over the field butat least Xavs’ scoring was restricted to a degree.Dan Richardson booted 8 goals, Jones andBourke added 11 between them and DavidLandrigan and Tim Wood were outstandingthroughout the game. Jason Gollant was the onlymultiple goal score for St Bernards with 2 and wasjoined by Tim Dobson and Ben Chatfield amongthe hard to find best for the visitors. The final scoreof 26.10 to 7.2 suggested the Xavs would again bea power and the Bernies coach, Gary Foulds, would have much to think about.B Section scribe and St Kevins stalwart, TerryQuirk, reported on the Mazenod versus St KildaSouth Caulfield game and highlighted the fact thatMazenod had found a focal point up forward inChris Harrison who finished with 8 goals.Mazenod were in charge by half time and lookedvery sound with a comfortable 22.8 to 13.13 victory.Better players – Harrison, O’Hara, Schofield,Ballenger, Murray, Young (Mazenod) andD’Agostino, Gilmore, Diamond, Tkocz, Buck,Astapenko (St Kilda).

20 YEARS AGO – 1987VAFA President, Jim Hawkins, in his openingstatement in The Amateur Footballer spoke thus –‘In an era of disruption in football in general, theVAFA is pleased to be able to offer Member Clubsan optimistic future’. He reminded all VAFAfollowers that, unlike the professional footballbodies below the elite level, the VAFA wascontinuing to grow its ranks. The 1986 All Australian and Victorian Captain,Dominic Spillane (Old Paradians), adorned the

5 YEARS AGO - 2002CEO, Phil Stevens, reminded us that the busiesttime of the football year was over and we could now“get on with the games”. The coaching accreditationcourse had been completed as had the Coaches’Night, the Sponsors’ Night, the Season LaunchDinner for Presidents, Secretaries and Members andmany more gatherings. There was a new Umpires’Adviser, Brendan Carland and a newrepresentative contest for our C-D clubs against theSouthern Football League. And there was an exciting start to the season in ASection when the Old Xavs, as they had done forthe past seven years, watched the unfurling of the ASection flag, only this time they were at Marcellinand the home club were the proud ones exhibitingtheir spoils from the 2001 season. The game wasfast, full of great one on one battles and onlyMarcellin’s inaccurate kicking in front of goal mayhave stopped them from starting with a win. TheXavs were too good, 13.10 to 10.16 and the bestplayers were – Scanlon, Stoney, Brushfield,Mollard, Blood, Occleshaw (Xavs) and Hansen,Romanin, Cox, Thiesz, Jarred, Goodwin(Marcellin).A Section coaches were Paul Cooper (De La Salle),Simon Dalrymple (Marcellin), Luke Soulos(MHSOB), Paul Fahey (Old Ivanhoe), DaleTapping (Old Scotch), Leigh Carlson (Old Trinity),Tim O’Shaughnessy (Old Xavs), Peter Nicholson(St Bernards), Mike McArthur-Allen (SKOBS)and Michael Conlon (Uni Blues). A Section FieldUmpires were – Jamie Kvins, Graeme Hunichen,Rob Sneddon, Steve McCarthy, Anthony Damen,Albie Firley, Jason McNiece, Peter James, WayneHinton and Mark Gibson.

10 YEARS AGO – 1997The CEO, Phil Stevens, welcomed all amateurfootball followers to a new season and announced achange of Umpire Adviser. Michael Sneddon wasappointed to take over from Brian Bulluss, whohad held the job for the previous 5 seasons. JasonFrenkel was appointed A Section scribe replacingthe respected Don Blackwood and Jason paid

being Olympic Park No 2 Oval and the St KildaCricket Ground. Caulfield Grammarians and UniBlacks in A Section performed the opener at thenew headquarters but the Blacks prevailed easily inthe finish 10.18 to 7.11. Best players – Sinclair,Crouch, McGregor (3), Saunders, Shackleton,Costello (Blacks) and Herington, Barker, Ward,Chaffey, J Tootell, P Hore (Caulfield). In B Section it was a close tussle between Uni Bluesand Uni High School Old Boys with the Blueswinning 11.5 to 8.16. Best players – Wilson,Loftus-Hills, Rutherford, Rhoden, Church(Blues) and Prosser, A Hume, Kinnear, Heaton, GBoag, Nettleton (UHSOB).Old Melburnian’s Murray Peden played his 100thgame and having given his club great service bothon and off the field, received the plaudits of theOM’s supporters.

50 YEARS AGO – 1957During the summer preceding the commencementof the 1957 season, amateur players and amateurfootball generally received outstanding recognitionduring Melbourne’s Olympic Games. On Friday7th December, visiting sporting enthusiasts fromall over the world had the pleasure of observing ademonstration Australian Rules football match. Thegame was played at the main stadium and wasbetween a team selected from the VAFA and a teamof amateur players, currently playing in either theVFL or VFA. The VAFA team was victorious (12.9to 8.7) in modified conditions such as slightlysmaller playing space (by 5 yards in both length andwidth) and with less than the normal time betweenquarters. The spectacle met the requirements of theInternational Olympic Federation who alwaysasked the host nation to include in the games, ademonstration of a national sport. The HonorarySecretary of the VAFA, Jack Fullerton, asorganiser of the demonstration match, also sat withHRH, the Duke of Edinburgh, to explain the finerpoints of the game. One of the participants that day, boundary umpire,Jack Wilson, is still active in amateur footballtoday heading up the team of gatekeepers atElsternwick Park. Jack also played VAFA footballand was a premiership coach with OrmondUnder 19’s and continues to devote his time to thegreat traditions of amateur football.

cover of the Amateur Footballer and played in histeam’s first round win against the reigning ASection Premiers, Collegians. DespiteCollegians’ Richard Herman with 6 goals andexcellent games from their stalwarts Irvine,Lemon and Bickford, Paradians ran away toscore a huge win, 24.13 to 12.8. Skerrit,Woods,Grills and Gleeson (6) were outstanding forParadians. Having won the B Section pennant theprevious season, Paradians looked to have everyreason to believe they would be a power in ASection as well.Old Trinity and Fawkner, Grand Finalists in CSection the previous season, both started their BSection campaigns in fine form to win against StKilda CBC and Uni Blacks respectively.

30 YEARS AGO – 1977The 85th year of amateur football commenced withthe trial, for one season, of free interchange of the20 players in each team. There was somedisappointment expressed by the VAFA Executivein that the number of teams competing had droppedfrom 140 (1976) to 137. B Section grand finalistsfrom the previous season, Marcellin and CaulfieldGrammarians, began their season strongly withrespective wins. Marcellin received solid oppositionfrom Uni Blues but the comfortable margin of 19points at the final siren was due in the main toDillon, Crimmins, Carrucan, Butler (4), Mahonand Toniolo for Marcellin. Standish, Schauble,Church, Melville (3), Hindle and Hager wereBlues’ best. Caulfield ran away from Old Trinity19.16 to 10.14 with best players – Lester, Lean,Morphet, Clark, Griffiths, Long (Caulfield) andRobison, S Emerson, Jones, Williams, Beer,Cowley (Old Trinity).100 games to Old Brighton’s Club Captain, IanParoissien. Ian joined the old boys in 1969 andproved to be not only a close playing defender but avery attacking one with considerable skill. Ian wasbest and fairest in 1971 and also served as HonoraryTreasurer.

40 YEARS AGO – 1967George McTaggart, Editor of The AmateurFootballer, announced that the taking over ofElsternwick Park by the VAFA for the 1967 seasonmeant that it was the Association’s third “central”ground since inception, the previous central grounds

What a great off season – so many INS and OUTS tokeep us busy. David Hicks is finally out, Lara Binglewas in and out all summer, Shane Whitnall wants tobe in the media circus but he should stay out,Brendan Fevola is on the outer at home but in formagainst the Dons yet was he ever in with Lara Bingle? ? Damien Oliver has ended his run of outs in Group1 races, my old mate Aaron Baddeley is in with Godand winning tournaments again, crazy haircuts in theAFL are out, Borat is an outstanding comedy that weall should watch, house prices continue to be out ofthis world, Neale Daniher is in more strife than TonyMokbel to keep his job and holiday makers havefound that the rain fell mainly in Spain this EasterBreak.

PREVIEWS Our first game is between two historic members ofthe VAFA, where Elsternwick entertain Powerhouseat the postage stamp. The hosts played finals in 2006and desperately want another crack at that level. Theboys from Ross Gregory have some great playersand will find this transition to D3 well within theirgrasp. I am tipping Elsternwick due to the homefixture by just a gaggle of points. Two many younger clubs in the league, Swinburnetake on Hawthorn at Rathmines Road – our first andonly Derby for the year! Derek Theone is backcoaching at the Razorbacks and it was under hisguidance that they won their 2003 flag. The boysshould welcome him back with a win !Old Westbourne kick off their campaign at homeagainst Ivanhoe – a team boasting just one away winlast season. The visitors have to accept that somedays they will be the pigeon in this league, yet otherdays – like in round one – they will be the statue. The home team here by lots.Victoria Park in Kew is the venue for Dave Witchell’smen to tackle Latrobe. In the past, Kew have walkedthe ‘thousand steps’ for inspiration but that won’ttranslate into much come game day! The visitorsstarted 2006 in competitive fashion, but the wheelscame off in the second half and there were‘latrocious’. I’m giving the red and black army thebenefit of the doubt here by a few goals. Finally, West Brunswick who hope to be finals bound,

Field umpires coach for the VFLDevelopment Squad, AdamDavis, was full of praise for theyoung umpires recruited from the VAFA. He was particularlypleased with their skill development, fitness levels and maturity.“The time spent at the VAFA has given these umpires anexcellent foundation for the start of their VFL careers.” saidDavis. Davis also added “that the challenge now starts for all theumpires and they must look for consistent performances toprogress at the VFL.” Goodman’s attention will now turn to VAFA season 2007 and thedevelopment of the next crop of young umpires with VFLaspirations. But Goodman, like all members of the VAFAUmpires Association, will keenly follow the progress of all theseenthusiastic umpires.’

VAFAUA Office Bearers - 2007 President - Rob Mayston, Vice-President – Grant Joyner,Secretary – Alan Stubbs, Assistant Secretary – Craig Brajtberg,Treasurer – Paul Jones, Assistant Treasurer – Patrick Coulthard,Social Secretary – Albie Firley and Building Manager – VinVescovi.

Summer Social News & CongratulationsBack in November, goalie Kevin (Chilli) Segota wed long timepartner Jane in a beautiful wedding at Patterson Lakes withquite a VAFA flavour. As well as a large number of umpires pastand present in attendance, the celebrant was none other thanVAFA legend Ken Bremner who for once in his life was a littleintimidated to be in a room full of umpires. Not forgetting theirrepressible VAFA Executive and media megastar Tom Brain, who was best man. Well done to Rob and Kerryn Sneddon on the birth of Connor, and Grant and Lisa Wardrop on the birth of Mitchell.Anthony Simpson, who is currently the father of three boys issoon to become the father of twins. Well done Simmo, we lookforward to the arrival in May. Possibly Anne (Mrs Simmo) willbe sending you off for a little bit of “surgery” soon?

RecruitmentFor any players out there who may have found the pre-seasontoo long and painful (and you realise you just can’t do itanymore), it’s not too late for a career change. Yes, the legs willget a work-out, but you won’t suffer the physical body torture ofa footballer. If you wish to join our ranks call Brian Goodman atthe VAFA on 9531 8333.

UMPIRES CORNERby Steve McCarthy & Leah Gallagher

We’re back!!We all did the rain dances over summer but the heavens justwouldn’t open up. So after a two week delay due to groundclosures, we finally get to play “for real” today. We’re sure thatplayers and umpires alike will be that little bit fitter due to ourextended pre-season training. Here we go, bring it on!!

Web SiteWe encourage all umpires to constantly check our web site athttp://www.vafaua.asn.au/ Our Webmaster Tim Sutcliffe hasdone a fantastic job with this over the summer with a whole newlook to the site. All information is there if umpires are unable tomake it down to training, therefore missing out on all sorts ofnews. Well done Tim, and thanks for starting the season asLeah’s temporary replacement in Umpires Corner as she enjoysan extended trip to the US.

VFL – Here we come!!Congratulations to a few of our young umpires who have earnedpositions with the VFL after trialling with them over summer. Here’s a recent article compiled by Tim Sutcliffe for our website.‘In a major triumph for the VAFA Umpires Association, eightumpires have been promoted to the VFL for season 2007.Field umpires: Rob O’Gorman, Daniel Silfo and Tim Saunders.Boundary umpires: Adam Rogers and Matt Jenkinson. Goalumpires: Lucas Robson, Michael O’Donnell and DanielBrooks. All made the VFL list for 2007. And VaughanSidebottom was elevated to the VFL supplementary fieldumpires list. After a long and arduous pre-season campaign involvingtraining, fitness testing, coaching sessions and practicematches, they were informed of their success by the StateDirector of Umpiring at Victoria Park on Tuesday March 20th. Brian Goodman, VAFA Director of Umpiring Operations, isexcited by the promotions and believes this is a significantoccasion for the VAFAUA and its members. “This is a realfeather in the cap for the VAFA Umpires Association. Allmembers of the VAFAUA should be proud of their contributionto the development of these umpires. The encouragement onthe training track and the support in matches by fellow umpireshas made a significant contribution to the development of thesefield, boundary and goal umpires.” Goodman was also pleased that the umpire coaching anddevelopment programs in the VAFA were achieving results. Hebelieves that the programs in place give young umpires everyopportunity to succeed.

RESPECT THE UMPIRE – RESPECT THE GAME!!

like home sides early inthe season so Box Hill togive off to a great startwith a win.Two highly rated sidesmeet when Albert Parkjourney out to Eltham. The Turtles are keen to avenge fortheir quick departure last year whilst the Falcons wouldconsider this one a bonus. Eltham to start the surge.Local derby of sorts when Eley Park makes the short trip toBulleen. Both sides were mid table last year and desperateto push up. Again, home team for me as Bulleen shouldrecord a win.The cellar dwellers of 2006 meet when Richmond hostsNorth Brunswick. I felt North weren’t far of the mark earlylast year before the year started to go pear shape.Richmond made some improvements and looks likely tocontinue in 2007. Not ready to confirm the improvementjust yet so might stick with North Brunswick. Finally, St. Mary’s trek out to Mt Lilydale. No form line onMt Lilydale just yet however the Saints have the drumsbeating loudly. Saints for mine.

Top four, Eltham, St Mary’s, Uni High and Box Hill Northwith the Turtles my flag tip!

D4 SECTIONby Ed Sill

Finally, back into it! An extremely exciting D4 this year withthe usual supply of two sides relegated form D3, apromotion from the Clubbies and some new boys in town.It will be very difficult to get a form line on this one with atleast 4 rounds required before things started to settle.

Albert Park - One of the few sides for whom the droughtwon’t cause as much grief as to others. Very competitivelast year and will be aiming for finals action.Box Hill North - Last year’s big improvers and went closeto toppling the eventual premiers in the first semi. Expectto progress further this year.Bulleen - Slightly disappointing last year and will behoping for some of their veterans to have injury freeseasons. Will have their eyes on the finals but improvementis needed.Eley Park - Solid year after coming up from Clubbies.Depth was a problem last year and will need to work on thatin 2007. Eltham - Great home and away season before injuries andform saw them get bumped out of the finals in straightsets. Great coup in attracting Garrard as playing coach.Premiership favourites.Mt Lilydale - Back to D4 after a short recess in theclubbies. Will be looking to consolidate first year back.North Brunswick- Disappointing last year however somestrong rumours of recruiting coups over the summer. Willbe eyeing finals actions but a good start is a must.Richmond - Made some solid strides last year where theywere competitive for most of the season. Word is furtherimprovement can be expected in 2007.St Mary’s - By far the largest beating of drums areemanating from the Saints. Star recruits apparently aboundwith a goal kicking machine in the offing!! Will be aimingto make the D4 stay a short one.South Mornington - Welcome to the Ammo’s! Impossibleto get a form line through the Mornington boys so the firstfew weeks should be interesting. Simply not sure.Syndal Tally Ho – A tough off season for the Sinners as afew stars try their luck elsewhere. Great club spirit will nodoubt help.Uni High - Disappointing 2006 with the resultant dip to D4.Word is plenty of numbers on the track with hopes of astrong year. Strong finals contender.

To the games!Uni High host Syndal with both sides having extremelyinterrupted pre-seasons. Uni High for mine.Box Hill North welcome new boys South Mornington in agame that will give an early indicator to form lines. Always

The VAFA Blood Challenge is on again! The aim of the challenge is to collect 1,000 blood donations during the footyseason. Winter is a time when the usage of blood is increased, but many peopleare unable to donate due to colds and flu. That's why the donations of VAFAplayers, friends and families are so important during this time.

The results of the 2006 Challenge are below. The top 3 clubs (by percentage) for2006 were:1. Caulfield Grammarians 38.1% 2. Peninsula OB 33.8% 3. VAFA UA 25.2%

Caulfield Grammarians were also winners of the VAFA Blood Challenge in 2005.Can they make it 3 years in a row, or will Peninsula or VAFA UA beat them toit this year?

The Challenge runs from this Saturday 28th April - Saturday 1st September.Remember that if you donate before the start of June, you will be eligible to donateTWICE during the challenge - DOUBLING YOUR CHANCE OF WINNING!(Donors are eligible to donate blood every 12 weeks)

You have received some registration forms in your kit this year, so please distributethese to your players to encourage them to donate. Extra forms are available at thedonor centre, in the Refreshment area.

Please ensure that each player fills in a form when they donate in order toregister their donation for your club. These completed forms should be left atthe donor centre.

It will be fantastic to have some new Captain Bloods on board this year - welcome! And it's great to have many of you back again as Captain Bloods in 2007. Thankyou all for your commitment to help save lives (and maybe win some great prizesalong the way!)

If you have any questions about the challenge or would like to book in a group fromyour club to donate, please contact Natalie Reid on 9694 0265.Looking forward to working with you this year!

U19 SECTION 2It has been a long buildup to season 2007 withthe drought creating a 6month preseason. Formost U19’s this equates to four weeks rather than two. This may mean that the U19’s this season will be betterprepared for the season's start, particularly teams with alarge university constituent. Grounds will still be hardand will initially favor the quick running sides, whilst laterin the season, the sides with greater depth will come tothe fore.

Predicted Ladder after the Home and Away SeasonEach year large changes in personnel make predictionsexceptionally hard in U19’s. Early feedback on Section 2suggests that this could be a very even, competitivesection. Pre-season form has been mixed for most sides, and although player quality appears strong, numbersseem to be low across the board. Old Camberwell and StBedes Mentone, as premiers of their respective divisionslast year appear to be early favorites; however there isalso strong support for any number of other sides, withOld Brighton a regular smokie in early correspondence.Old Camberwell will be looking to premiership playersCaine Hillier (competition leading goal kicker), and ChrisWright to help them to consecutive flags.

Good luck to all this weekend, and I look forward to youproving me wrong. However with only three responsesfrom club contacts thus far, tipping is more guess workthan reason.

My selections this week are Old Brighton by 13pts,Caulfield at home in a 3pt thriller, Old Camberwell by 25pts, Collegians away, and Old Parade by three goals.

U19 SECTION 1Another season is upon us, lets be honest it’s going tobe hard to top last year, but we will give it a bash. Finallythe season looks set to start, and after months of warmwind and fine dust, ten U19 Premier Division teamsbegin the climb up Mount Vesuvius in search of theelusive and coveted U19 section 1 flag, the “JS McCanntrophy”As a famous DJ once said, “It’s a walk-off……..”

Who’s hotDe La La La – Great win last year over highly fanciedXavs. Word is they are just as big and strong. Look outfor a very consistent model of the La this year.OX – Always on top, I’d be ignorant not to mention the“Desert War” of the premier competition. Look for themto be grinding down the straight come seasons end.Scotchy – Bit of a steam train last year. 18 goal win infinal practice match and this year lead by the capableSean Lieth. Look out for marked improvement this yearwith plenty of direction by Coach Brendan “Buzz” Hart.Marcellin – Smashed Collegians in the latest practicematch and word has it that coach Stephen Layt isassembling a team fast enough to challenge this year.Blackers – stepped up to the plate and taking onPremier Division is a big step. I liken them to a youngracehorse that needs to be harnessed into the real deal. All the ability in the world but a bit green, now lets seewhat coach J Gray can do with it. Big chance fellas!

Who’s notGive me a couple of weeks but could be a tough year forthe SKOBS and with no news from the Blues, I can onlyassume they will be thereabouts again. Is that goodenough?Down to the serious business and selection time. Thisweek I will go for De La Salle, St Bernard’s, Old Scotch,Rupo and Xavs.

Its back, “the lock”. This week it will be Cats to beat theKangas – over 39.5. Get on it.

CORRESPONDENTSOn a brighter note, I will be relying heavily on feedbackthis year. Please contact me with any correspondence, best players and opinions. Until next week……happypunting. [email protected] (please note newemail address).

U19 NORTHThe stunning last quarter success of Bulleen-Templestowe last season shows how quickly U19 formcan change. With three new teams in the section mostsensible judges would wait until at least round fiveprior to making predictions. It is far more fun toprovide the coaches with some ammunition.

Predicted Ladder after Home and Away SeasonAll the early feedback suggests that last year’s finalistsFitzroy, Aquinas and Old Xaverians will be theyardsticks, whilst Rob Smith will again attempt toguide the ‘Golds’ into the finals. However, the pre-season form of the likes of Gareth Rees and DavidWalsh at Therry Penola suggests that this section maybe far less predictable.

Fitzroy RedsTherry PenolaAquinasOld XaveriansEmmaus St LeosSt BernardsOld WestbourneDe La SalleNorth Old Boys St PatsRupertswood

I truly hope you can all prove me wrong, though Iwould love to get one tip correct in my first round. Drygrounds will suit sides with on-ball depth, so thetraditionally quick Rupo may set this trend fromRound 1.

My selections this week are Old Xavs at home by 6points, Rupertswood by 2pts, Aquinas by 23, Reds ina one point thriller, and De La Salle by 17pts.

CORRESPONDENTSGood luck and please send match reports [email protected] [email protected]

U19 SECTION 3Here are all the early flag odds and ladder predictions.Bentleigh ($51) 9th – The boys down the NepeanHighway may have spent a bit too much time in PortPhilip Bay working on their tans and not enough on thetraining track. They have the ability to surprise but willneed to conjure some magic to play finals.Bulleen Templestowe ($101) 10th – The Ants had a

solid 2006 but a promotion to Section 3 will see itstruggle to get the runs on the board regularly enough.La Trobe University ($34) 8th – Cohesion, class and ahistory of success means I see the Uni boys not copingearly before rattling home with some respectable winsto lift it from the doldrums. MHSOB ($11) 6th – MHSOB can be moreunpredictable than the quality of my fathers roastdinners so they will be hot and cold all year andtherefore be a rollercoaster ride for all involved. Oakleigh ($4.50) 3rd – I like the form of Oakleigh, whoseem to find a big goalkicker each year, play consistentfootball which plagues several clubs (see MHSOB) andhave one of the best grounds in the competition.Old Essendon ($9) 4th – Bomberland like their seniorsshow much promise yet fail to deliver, maybe it’s theyear of the baby bombers but I don’t think it will be. Old Ivanhoe ($4.50) 2nd – The Hoes are normally apolished school unit who play a tempo brand offootball which will see them in the thick of it comeSeptember.Old Mentonians ($21) 7th – Freshly promotedPanthers are the new kids on the block and some earlyvictories wouldn’t surprise but when it all settles down, they will be on the receiving end more often than not.Old Trinity ($4) 1st – Strong club determined to erasememories of 2006 and with the lush trainingsurroundings of Bulleen, it should ensure the Eagleshad an un-interrupted pre-season and go into the yearas flag favourites.Ormond ($7) 4th – The Monds will fly the suburbanclub flag with Oakleigh and push the school clubs allyear long.

Round One PreviewOld Ivanhoe shape up against Bulleen Templestoweand should prevail down at Chelsworth. Ormond headout to Bundoora to meet La Trobe in a game that willbe a tight tussle with the visitors sneaking home twogoals. Bentleigh go to the postage stamp in the roundsclosest encounter where I think they will have a littleedge at the final siren over MHSOB and win by a goal. The Panthers will cause the upset of the round byrolling the Bombers. Finally in a possible grand finalpreview, Oakleigh host Old Trinity in an early treat thatwill establish some bragging rights with the hometeam to win by three goals.

U19 – SOUTHHere are all the early flag odds and ladder positions.Ajax ($7) 3rd – Proud club with an elite setup will seethe Jacka’s cutting the mustard in 2007 with a lot oftheir home games to be played on the vast expanses ofSportscover Arena. Hampton Rovers ($34) 6th – “We live by the seaside”brings smiles to the faces of all as some of the more

interesting theme song lines, but the Rovers will needto make Boss James a fortress as they look to lift ontheir mid-table finish from 2006.Mazenod ($5) 1st – The Nodders are my flag tip asthey have a strong mature-age senior team that won’trely on too many young guns allowing for a settledoutfit to push for the silverware. Monash Blues ($4) 4th – Recruiting will determinemuch of the Blues fortunes for the year and I think theClayton campus boys will sneak into the finals.Old Haileyburians ($2.75) 2nd – Would have to be theundeniable favourite after a 2006 where they lost nogames however with young Stefan Martin off to theVFL and all the young jets will be blooded in theseniors meaning instability may cost them poleposition in September. Parkdale Vultures ($34) 8th – Great jumper, evenbetter ground and facilities, Parkdale would win theflag on this alone but sadly four quarters need to beplayed and they will win some but not enough.Peninsula ($34) 7th – As close to interstate travel asyou an get in the VAFA, Peninsula need to snaffle a fewearly wins to play finals but depth problems may rob itof consistency and a birth in the top four.Prahran-Caulfield ($21) 5th – The two-blues enter anew Under 19 team that will take time to mature, muchlike a bottle of Penfolds Grange, and that will takemany years.Salesian ($251) 10th – Unlikely to field a team in2007.St Bedes Mentone Tigers ($51) 9th – The Tigers willbe a wait and watch in 2007. They do play thereBrindisi St Ground like champions much like the WestCoast play Subiaco, minus the drugs.

Round One PreviewThe merged outfit of Prahran-Caulfield head out toMazenod and in what will be a tough initiation,Mazenod will win by plenty. Monash Blues welcomeSBMT off Springvale Road to campus with a close firstthree quarters before the Blues kick clear after orangetime to record a seven goal win. Vultures and Ajax areboth teams that aren’t known for being up and runningearly so I flipped a coin, saw heads, Ajax to win. OldHaileyburians meet Salesian with the Purple andBlacks home comfortably. The bay boys face off herewith Hampton to ease the cost of the travel and returnwith the points over Peninsula.

Oval. St Bernards, who just missed thefour in 2006 may takethe points after aclose tussle with the Blacks, who may take time tosettle into a cohesive unit. The Caulfield Grammarians and Emmaus – St Leo’sgame should be a physical affair as neither side hasbeen noted for its pace over the years. At home Ilean to Caulfield, whose attention to training shouldhave been the more intense (B section as opposedto D2 Section)I select Fitzroy Reds to defeat Old Trinity at McHaleStadium as the reds should be the more settledside.St Bede’s – Mentone Tigers played well in Section 1last season and at home today they should defeatCollegians many of whom will be journeying tostrange surroundings..Two newcomers St Francis Xavier Beaconsfield andKew meet out at the S.F.X. College. The Kew teamhas come from the joining of the V.A.F.A. Club withNorth Kew. Given the long journey south east andthe fact the home players know each other fromschool days, I select St Francis Xavier.Old Brighton, keen to atone for a disappointing2006 season travel to play Old Scotch at St JamesPark. I suspect Old Brighton will be the more settledside and as such should win.

Section 3I select Beaumaris to open with a win over TherryPenola, who disappointed last season.Old Carey return after a season’s absence to playWhitefriars, who have lost many players. Despite

CLUB XVIII SECTIONby Norm Nugent

The long hot summer has passed at last and likeformer times the football season starts late in April.Nothing is new in football!!All is well with our competition, which is biggerthan ever before with thirty six teams vying for theright to participate on Sports Cover Arena. Formerteams return and new sides have entered for whatis hoped will be a season of fierce competition.

Section 1Old Scotch have often started slowly and for thisreason I am selecting St Kevin’s to open the seasonwith a win.Promoted Monash Blues host Mazenod, who didnot enjoy much success in 2006. Reports receivedindicate a rejuvenated Mazenod and I tip themtoday especially as University players are not notedfor their pre season dedication.Old Melburnians, under new Coach, DavidLandrigan, host De La Salle, who also have a newmentor. I favour De La Salle, who are always a forcein this competition.Prahran play Old Xaverians 2, whose player nucleuswill have benefited from last season’s experience inthe Section. The Prahran veterans, who can playgreat football, are not noted for their early seasonfitness and today Old Xaverians have a great chanceto start with a win. I will stay with Prahran and pickthem to win.Reigning premiers, Old Xaverians face theUniversity Blues, who will field a lot of new players. The Xaverians should win as the Students may taketime to learn each other’s strengths.Section 2University Blacks play St Bernards on the Crawford

their changed personnel, I select Whitefriars on thesmall Victoria Road, Reserve.Marcellin, who from reports have been trainingsolidly should win at home over newcomers, OldWestbourne.Fitzroy Reds play the returning BulleenTemplestowe, who have not played in Club XV111since Round 3 in1995. The “Bullants” will take timeto adjust to their new coach and so I select FitzroyReds. Two of last season’s disappointing teams, OldScotch and North Old Boys/ St Patricks play at StJames Park. I select Old Scotch purely becausethey will be playing at home. Two sides used to playing on a big ground, LaTrobeUniversity and Old Geelong play at Bundoora. Homeground advantage should enable La Trobe to openwith a victory.Another two newly formed sides in Oakleigh andBox Hill North play on the Scammell Reserve. Thehome ground advantage should enable Oakleigh toopen with a win.Team Managers. Please send me details of your game by noonMonday so as I can provide a more meaningfulresume each week.
