There is nowhere else like Collingwood. Inspired by the authentic character of its surrounding streets and eclectic culture, The Workshop is a limited collection of 11 contemporary lofts.

From the existing façade on Harmsworth Street to the refined industrial interior spaces, the architectural and design team has ensured The Workshop acknowledges the form, history and present day character of this inner-urban area.

The result is something completely different to today’s apartment market, yet perfectly in tune with how Collingwood locals like to live.

The renowned architectural studio of DKO is known for its in-depth consideration of local context, character and community in its architecture. From the outside in, The Workshop is no exception.

“We chose to retain the existing façade on Harmsworth Street,” explains lead architect, Jesse Linardi. “This allowed us to acknowledge the history, previous use, and existing character of the streetscape.”

This approach established both a material palette and an architectural language to reference across the design. “The robust and industrial aesthetic of The Workshop informed many of our decisions, including the interior design response and the use of private outdoor spaces,” he adds.

This concept was embraced by Evan Dimitropoulos from the landscape architecture practice, Etched. “I wanted the landscape and garden elements to truly become embedded within the fabric of Collingwood,” he says. “To me those moments you find of plants climbing the walls of a brick façade signal the coming together of the natural environment and the built form.”

The Workshop celebrates the proud history of Collingwood as an address for artists and crafts-people. Each residence features bespoke elements created by local artisans, from individually designed and manufactured house numbers to unique street art to be commissioned by the residents. The result is a place as distinctive as the people who live here.

The Workshop presents a variety of loft floorplans to suit a range of lifestyles. Each residence is a two-storey home with soaring, double-height atrium areas which bring a rare sense of space to inner-city living. This generous expanse is matched by tall windows which allow more natural light to fill the generously-sized rooms.

The architectural respect given to Collingwood’s past continues from the external architecture to inside each loft residence, where the interior design team from SLAB have employed a light industrial aesthetic to the finishes.

As a local what I love most about Collingwood is the eclectic architecture, the vibrant street art and the sense of community. This isn’t a pretentious suburb, and yet I think it’s home to the best food scene in Melbourne. Plus, its proximity to the city makes it a very convenient place to live.

Unlike most modern property developments, The Workshop is created by people who live and work in the area. The architect lives two streets away from this location, while the engineers and designers work nearby. They all share a passion for the area and are committed to keeping the character of Collingwood alive.

“I personally love how authentic Collingwood is,” says developer Raghav Goel. “It’s also at the forefront of innovation, especially in terms of its built form, and that inspired us.”

“We could have built townhouses or apartments but we felt we should challenge ourselves to do something timeless and unique,” he adds. “The whole team was upfor the challenge – because it’s Collingwood.”

The cultural scene is defi nitely alive here. There is a strong design focus in the area and many, many creative practices, individuals and shared working spaces. We love how inclusive and independent the community is, and the vibrant culture of creativity. You don’t have to visit a gallery to see great art or take inspiration; just simply walk down one of the backstreets or alleyways.

Collingwood still has edge. I love that it has retained its sense of authenticity as it has evolved in recent years, and I wanted to infuse The Workshop with that independent spirit. It’s always changing, and it’s diverse inits varied culture. As a designer anda local, that’s very inspiring to me.

Collingwood epitomizes the changing face of Melbourne’s inner-city. The rich tapestry of former and current industrial buildings interwoven with an ever-expanding network of contemporary developments gives this place a unique balance not found inother suburbs.

For me personally, this juxtaposition resonates as I remember exploring Collingwood as a child withmy grandparents who both worked inthe area.

As designers, we love that Collingwood is the creative mecca of Melbourne. It’s very grassroots too,from the locals’ personal style and artisan furniture makers, to creative agencies and everything in between.

The double height loft residences of The Workshop offer a living experience not generally available in today’s apartments. Unlike split-level apartments, which are sometimes mistakenly described as lofts,these are true Brooklyn style homes with five-metre high ceilings in the living areas set against bedrooms in an upper level.

“We wanted to infuse the personality and spirit of Collingwood into the interior spaces while acknowledging the history of the site,” notes designer Seada Besic from SLAB. “That’s most notable in the kitchen’s feature workbench and refined industrial tapware, as well as the exposed concrete floors.”

SLAB is an emerging young design firm, who are working on a variety of projects from small extensions in Carlton to multi-res in Collingwood, with the capabilities and aspirations to expand into any form of architecture and design. The team is design driven and enthusiastic, with a rigorous approach to each individual project and client.

The boutique environment and closeness of the team encourages working together on a diverse scale of projects, connecting with the client on a personal level, ensuring high quality design and uniqueness for each project.

Consideration of the site and context drives each design, and a dedication to quality of space results in timelessness and simplicity.

SLAB encourages collaboration with other firms bringing varied processes and knowledge together. The young nature of the team provides an enthusiastic, driven approach, complementing the experience and knowledge of other firms.

Oz Property Group was established in 2007 in Melbourne, Australia with an aim to create modern and liveable spaces. Since 2007 the group has collaborated with some of Melbourne’s most talented designers and builders, to ensure they always deliver inspirational developments.

Recognising the local culture and heritage is a key part of Oz Property Group’s approach to develop inspirational spaces. The group’s track record is evidence of their underlying commitment to develop projects that make a positive contribution to the local community, without rejecting the history and integrating it in all project outcomes.

The Workshop is Oz Property Group and DKO’s sixth collaboration.

Having first opened its doors in 2000 DKO has grown from a small but dedicated team delivering medium density residential architecture, into a practice of over 140 design professionals working out of multiple offices in Australia, New Zealand and Asia. While the practice has expanded, so has the breadth of projects undertaken, from landmark mixed-use developments to bespoke residences, luxury resorts, retail interiors, community churches and large-scale masterplanning.

What remains consistent however, is the pursuit of high quality architecture driven by the needs of the client, the site’s opportunities and the dynamic process of translating design intent into built outcome. At the core of DKO’s design philosophy, admirably conveyed in the projects that follow, lies a commitment to an architecture that serves people, respects place and stands the test of time.

ETCHED is a landscape architectural studio based in Melbourne. With a boutique approach to the design process, ETCHED encourages collaboration and an on-going dialogue between clients and consultants. This process ensures that the initial vision can be achieved and the new landscape elements of a project can truly become embedded within the context of a site.

Having worked across a range of projects within the residential, multi-residential commercial and industrial sectors, ETCHED brings a multi-faceted knowledge in applying design to a range of landscape settings. Colour, form, texture, and scale are key design considerations as the team works to bring the natural and built environments together. With extensive experience in design, town planning and development, the team is well versed in all elements of landscape architecture.

With a youthful vibrancy, upbeat attitude and a modern approach to space and site, the ETCHED team builds on the architectural aspect of a site to create personalised, site responsive and experiential landscapes.
