“There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book.”
― Frank Serafini
“What’s inside your book?”
Why are we here?• Connect to our Literacy goals• Continue to develop our stories• Share our stories with others who haven’t yet
had the pleasure to meet us• Model lifelong learning by reading (writing,
speaking, listening, etc.)• Share the books on our tables• To have a great day together!
“What’s inside your book?”
• Find someone you work with (or know well) and talk about what you’re reading; for work, or pleasure, and if you would recommend the book to them.
• Find someone you’ve never met before (or don’t know well) and share something about you that you’d like them to know about you and/or your work

Literacy
• 74% of our 3rd graders are proficient• By 2017 the 26%, or approximately
9399 students, will be retained • Average of 28 students for every district in Iowa
– Ex. If 30 of our districts hired another teacher, the cost would be approximately $1.2 million
• Think of the financial costs• Think of the long-term educational cost• Our goals, literacy coaches, ELI, FAST/IGDIES,
summer school project, core standards, etc.
Retention…can we “afford” it?
“The evidence gathered in the last 30 years on the practice of retention suggests that it is academically ineffective and is potentially detrimental to children’s social and emotional health. The seeds of failure may be sown early for students who are retained, as they are significantly more likely to drop out of high school. Furthermore, the trajectory of adverse outcomes appears to continue into young adulthood, when wages and postsecondary educational opportunities are depressed.”

Budget:
• SSA - 1.25% in House vs. 4.0% in Senate• Governor and Legislators still “taking” our $15 million
that Iowa Code says we’re supposed to get• We have made categorical requests but can’t count on
any of them:– $8 million for literacy coaches– $2.5 million for mental health pilots– $2 million for teacher leadership & compensation– $1 million for personalized learning
• Need everyone to advocate for adequate funding to fulfill our obligation to the children, families and educators we serve! Write, call, email, attend…
$2.5 Million Mental Health Pilots
$160,000
