Health Belief Model It attempts to explain and predict a
given health-related behavior from certain patterns of belief about the recommended health behavior and the health problems that the behavior was intended to prevent or control.
supports the theory that attaining and maintaining health depends on actions or behaviors undertaken by the individual threatened by real or potential illness.Belief
behavior
The model postulates that the following four conditions both explain and predict a health-related behavior:
A person believes that his or her health is in jeopardy.
The person perceives the "potential seriousness" of the condition in terms of pain or discomfort, time lost from work, economic difficulties, or other outcomes.
The model postulates that the following four conditions both explain and predict a health-related behavior:
On assessing the circumstances, the person believes that benefits stemming from the recommended behavior outweigh the costs and inconvenience and that they are indeed possible and within his or her grasp.
The model postulates that the following four conditions both explain and predict a health-related behavior:
The person receives a "cue to action" or a precipitating force that makes the person feel the need to take action.
Concept Definition
Perceived SusceptibilityOne's opinion of chances of getting a condition
Perceived SeverityOne's opinion of how serious a condition and its consequences are
Perceived BenefitsOne's belief in the efficacy of the advised action to reduce risk or seriousness of impact
Perceived BarriersOne's opinion of the tangible and psychological costs of the advised action
Cues to Action Strategies to activate "readiness"
Self-Efficacy Confidence in one's ability to take action
Pender’s Health Promotion model
Nola J. Pender
Pender’s Health Promotion model to be used as guide to explore
the biophysical processes that motivate individuals to engage in behaviors directed toward health enhancement(PENDER, 1996).
provided a theoretical framework which was used to investigate life-enhancing behaviors such as exercise and weight loss
Health Promoting Behavior?
"...continuing activities that must become an integral part of an individual's life style"
Bandura’s Self- efficacy theory
Self-Efficacy? one's belief in one's
ability to succeed in specific situations
ALBERT BANDURA
DIFFERENTATIONSELF- REGULATION- exercise of
influence over one’s own motivation, thought process emotional state and patterns of behavior.
Self-efficacy versus self-esteemSelf-efficacy versus confidence
Sources of self-efficacy
- Self efficacy is developed by four (4) main source of influence
4 main source of influence1. Mastery of Experience/performance
accomplishment2. Vicarious Experience provided by social
models3. Social persuasion (Support/Motivation from
significant others)4. Reduction of stress reactions and alter negative emotional proclivities and
interpretation of physical and emotional traits.
Efficacy- Activated processesThere are 4 major psychological processes through which self-belief of efficacy affect human functioning.
Thought patterns/ Cognitive Process thinking process, involve
acquisition, organization and use of information◦Most course of actions are initially organized in thought.
MotivationMotivational Process –
cognitive generated
RESPONSE
–affects how people respond to failure/ success
SELECTION PROCESS
– the choices the person makes that cultivate different competencies, interest and social network that determines life courses.
Health Behaviors
Self-efficacy influences the effort one puts forth to change risk behavior and the persistence to continue striving despite barriers and setbacks that may undermine motivation.
